AN EVENING WITH GAZZA

Whenever I’m in the city centre I seem to be able to shoehorn in a trip to Zapatista Burrito Bar. The service and food

are excellent, and the Burrito Belly Buster Challenge is on my to do list!

I recently paid my first visit to the Bridge Tavern - and fell in love with it. With great drinks, a fantastic outside

space, and a superb location under the Tyne Bridge, I recommend a visit.

I’m looking forward to seeing Bill Bailey at the City Hall. As a comedy venue, I think it’s one of the best in town.

I’ll also be heading to the new END clothing store on Grainger Street, although I’ll probably spend an unhealthy

amount of time (and money) in there!

I’ve also got my first visit to Lane 7 for this year’s Christmas party. I’ve been practising to make sure I have the bragging

rights come Monday morning!thetynesider.wordpress.com

HE’S ALL GROWED UPGeordie comic Chris Ramsey’s been a busy bee this year; if he’s not guesting on panel shows like Celebrity Juice, he’s hitting the road on tour.

Now, he’s bringing his new show, All Growed Up, to his home audience, celebrating getting older and all the trappings that modern adulthood brings with it, for better or worse.Newcastle City Hall, December 4, £17.50 newcastlecityhall.org

MUSIC

HIT THE HIGH NOTESThere’s nothing like a mega-gig to get the pulse racing, and from the floor-shaking sound to international star-worthy stage, there’s nowhere better than Metro Radio Arena.

Kicking things off in incendiary style are fire-starters The Prodigy (Nov 26) whose latest album has been cited as their angriest yet, with support from equally miffed US hip hoppers Public Enemy.

On a slightly smoother note, Simply Red (Dec 4) bring their Big Love tour to the city; expect top hits like Money’s Too Tight To Mention and Something Got Me Started.

1980s synth heroes Duran Duran (Dec 5) tour their 14th studio album, Paper Gods, which mixes hard-edged pop with

experimental sounds. As long as they play Rio, we’re happy.

Stereophonics (Dec 6) add some indie cool to proceedings with their upbeat melodies and inimitable vocals, while rock icons Def Leppard (Dec 9) are in Newcastle alongside best buddies and co-headliners Whitesnake.

Metro Radio and TFM present a Christmas pop extravaganza on Dec 7, with a line-up which will elicit squeals from any pop fan worth their salt. Perky popster Olly Murs heads the bill alongside hip hop icon Lunchmoney Lewis, N-Dubz rapper Dappy, house and garage duo Blonde, X Factor winner Ben Haenow, producer Sigala and songwriter Nathan Sykes.

MONSTER HITS

All set to bring a measure of Sheffield spirit to Newcastle’s Quayside, Reverend & The Makers flex their substantial indie muscles on their new album tour.

Mirrors, which careens from psychedelic love-in to glam stomp, fuses forthright indie sensibilities with electronic-tinged rhythms and a danceable energy. The Rev and his cohorts also put on a wild live show, so say your prayers and get ready to worship! Riverside, November 25, £14 riversidenewcastle.co.uk

Proving that Iceland’s not all about posh yoghurt and volcanoes, Keflavik’s foremost indie folk band Of Monsters & Men bring their warm indie pop soundscapes and melodic hooks to O2 Academy. Having found fame thanks to their rollicking hit Little Talks, the band have soundtracked numerous successful TV shows and films, including The Walking Dead and The Hunger Games. O2 Academy, November 29 £22.50, o2academynewcastle.co.uk

Carving a niche as one of the most respected jazz singers on the circuit, Amsterdam-born Caro Emerald’s innate ability to blend pop sensibilities with jazz smoothness ensures she remains effortlessly cool.

The multi-platinum selling artist has a retro-tinged style and stunning stage presence, guaranteeing that her appearance at Newcastle City Hall will be an evening of splendid sounds and contemporary chic. Newcastle City Hall, November 27 from £24.50, newcastlecityhall.org

PANTOS PANTOS

OH YES THEY ARE!Newcastle abounds with a range of wonderful pantos this festive season, with traditional pantomimes and even some adult-orientated silliness on offer. Here are our recommendations

Get your fill of glitz and glamour thanks to the Theatre Royal’s production of Dick Whittington. Local star Charlie Hardwick (Emmerdale) appears as Spirit of the Tyne alongside comedy favourites Danny Adams, Clive Webb and veteran dame Chris Hayward.Theatre Royal, until January 17 from £12, theatreroyal.co.uk

Heroes and heroines are the theme at Northern Stage, as William Russell Sprout Jr enjoys rambunctious festive fun in Up & Out Christmas Sprout; while for older children, Dorothy and her cohorts journey to defeat the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.Northern Stage, until January 2 from £9.50, northernstage.co.uk

Swap a chilly Newcastle evening for an Arabian night, as Aladdin pursues his love for Princess Jasmine, genie in tow! Now in its 13th consecutive year, the Tyne Theatre panto is a Christmas tradition. Tyne Theatre & Opera House, December 4-30, from £15 theatreroyalandoperahouse.uk

Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story, the Little Match Girl is beautifully told through dance, song and music. Dance City, December 1-5, £6 dancecity.co.uk

Cute adventures abound at Seven Stories, as Maisy Mouse (Dec5-13) chooses a Christmas tree with the help of songs and games. Plus, silly Santa’s short on elves - cue festive hilarity at magical theatre performance Elves Wanted! (Dec 5-23).Seven Stories, from £6 +, admission to centre, sevenstories.org.uk

For some adult-orientated Chrimbo fun, let Silly Billies Comedy Club (Dec 20) celebrate the anarchic surrealist in you, as they introduce strange characters and absurd happenings; while Live Lab (Dec 21) professes to be the theatrical highlight of your advent calendar, with a night of spoken word, theatre, music and comedy. Live Theatre, from £5, liveorg.uk

Contemporary theatre gets in on the Chrimbo act, as Carols & Cocktails follows a pair of hapless office IT gurus as they attempt to woo the same woman at their Christmas party. Cocktails and a sing-along - the perfect recipe for festive fun!Alphabetti Theatre, December 8-23, £8 alphabettitheatre.co.ukThe Little Match Girl, Dance City

21 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK20 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK

TOP OF THE BILLOne of the biggest brains in comedy, Bill Bailey is heading to Newcastle with his new show, Limboland, accompanied by a plethora of musical instruments with which he will collide on stage between jokes, playing all of them faultlessly, because, apart from being a brain box, he’s also a musical genius.

Mind, brains don’t necessarily buy happiness, and Bailey is afflicted with a chronic disappointment in life, his new show being based on the theory of why life never lives up to our expectations, no matter how hard we try. Here’s more:

“We have a vaulted idea of what we imagine we’ll achieve and then we realise the reality is somewhat different,” he told us, which made our interviewer feel a bit sad.

Mind, we cheered up when we heard that Bill named his son Dax after the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Character. Then Bill told us the boy was actually named after a friend, which was a bit disappointing (see point above).

Bill is very right on - a socialist and a feminist, he’s also into bikram yoga and an expert in bird and wildlife, presenting a telly show called Bill Bailey’s Birdwatching Bonanza. As one does.

His rich musical history includes a stint in a punk band called Beergut. He was also

AS BRITAIN’S BRAINIEST COMIC BILL BAILEY HEADS TO TOON WE FIND OUT WHAT MAKES THIS MUSICAL FUNNYMAN TICK

Newcastle City Hall, November 28-29, £25, newcastlecityhall.org

once in a group called The Famous Five – an unsuccessful band with only four members. He’s also worked variously as a lounge pianist and a keyboard player in a jazz trio. He told us: “I love playing different instruments. Acts where everything comes together can be transcendent. They are greater than the sum of their parts. Music can take things to a higher level.” Thanks, Bill. We like that.

He also much prefers live work to telly. “I always get a surge of adrenaline before a show. TV producers say, ‘We’ll cut that bit out.’ You can’t do that with stand-up.”

He still gets nervous though, telling us that live gigs are “like stepping off a diving board. But it’s a tremendous thrill that I still get at every gig. I love the fact that every gig is different because every audience is different. I get great energy off the audience. It’s like catching a wave when you’re surfing.”

Bill likes to think the rest of us are as clever as him, so he aims to make his audience think. “If you challenge them, they’ll respond,” he told us. “If you’re a half-decent comedian, you should be able to get laughs every time. But if at the same time you can slip in a bit of something else – a historical appraisal of how different musical modes reflect different cultures, say.” Which is exactly what we were thinking.
