Originally the VJH Foundation Light a Bulb campaign allowed community members to purchase an actual bulb on a tree adjacent to the highway outside the hospital. However, the actual tree is no longer there. Now, each year, strings are lit on the top of Polson Tower to recognize generous donations that help make health care better in our community. On November 15, the iconic red tree will once again be fully lit to mark the beginning of the annual Light a Bulb campaign. Last year alone, more than 9,300 surgical procedures were performed at VJH. This constant usage means there is an ongoing need to upgrade and replace state-of- the-art equipment. “Having access to the most up-to- date tools helps ensure we can focus on innovative surgical procedures to make patients better, and get our loved ones home faster,” says Dr. Peter Bosma, VJH Chief of Staff. “The Light a Bulb campaign is a holiday tradition for many, with donations coming from people who give annually in memory of loved ones or to acknowledge the wonderful care they received at VJH. Each $35 tax deductible gift will light one bulb on the tree of lights and $500 will light an entire string,” states Kevin Arbuckle – Foundation President and Light a Bulb Chairperson. There are a number of ways that you can help the Foundation light the tree: cut out the donation form in this edition of the Heart Beat and mail it to, or drop it by, the Foundation office mail your cheque to VJH Foundation, 2101-32nd Street, Vernon B.C. V1T 5L2 make a secure donation online at vjhfoundation.org call us at 250.558.1362 The Light a Bulb brochures will be delivered to mailboxes throughout the North Okanagan in the coming weeks. The lighting of a red tree at Vernon Jubilee Hospital is regarded by many in the North Okanagan as the indication that the holiday season is not far off. Originally the VJH Foundation Light a Bulb campaign allowed community members to purchase an actual bulb on a tree adjacent to the highway outside the hospital. However, the actual tree is no longer there. Now, each year, strings are lit on the top of Polson Tower to recognize generous donations that help make health care better in our community.

RBC GRANT YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH

North Okanagan youth will gain access to mental health support services by way of life skills development, group therapy, and peer engagement opportunities, thanks to RBC Foundation granting $50,000 over two years to the development of these essential programs.

TB VETS GRANT GLIDESCOPEThousands of people in the North Okanagan who are impacted annually by respiratory related issues will now be breathing easier thanks to TB Vets Charitable Foundation, who generously purchased a new state-of-the-art Glidescope Video Laryngoscope for the respiratory therapy team at the hospital.

SMOOTH OPERATIONS GALA

This stunning and elegant event saw a sold-out crowd enjoy a gourmet dinner, live and silent auctions, unforgettable entertainment, and a fabulous VIP room. Overwhelming community support resulted in more than $100,000 being raised for the Operation: Surgical Care for Life campaign.

PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY ROOM OPENING

Children facing cancer now have a dedicated space at Vernon Jubilee Hospital to receive chemotherapy treatment thanks to the Sun FM Have a Heart Radiothon and the incredible generosity of our community.

Supported by a specialized team of health care professionals, the room is a child-friendly environment

within the McMurtry-Baerg Cancer Centre where patients and families can feel comfortable as they receive the care they need.

IN REVIEW MAY-OCTOBER 2019Donations, grants, events and community support all make a significant impact to healthcare in the North Okanagan. We are grateful for the incredible support the Foundation receives so that we can improve lives in our community.

ARMSTRONG SPALLUMCHEEN HEALTHCARE AUXILIARY The Freedom of the City Award was bestowed to the Armstrong Spallumcheen Healthcare Auxiliary in June, in recognition of the significant support they give to the community and surrounding region. This support includes having raised over $1 million for the VJH Foundation.

CHARITY CLASSIC GOLF TOURNAMENTDue to the ongoing tremendous support of the participants in the Charity Classic golf tournament, the 10th Anniversary event netted over $300,000 for the second year in a row. This brought the total raised over the past ten years to over $2,000,000!

P.A. WOODWARD’S FOUNDATION GRANT

COLONOSCOPESColon screening services are being supported at VJH, thanks to a grant from the Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Woodward’s Foundation to purchase new colonoscopes. These scopes can help prevent cancer by removing polyps before they turn into cancer, resulting in more treatment options and better outcomes for patients.

MRI MACHINEInterior health has provided Vernon Jubilee Hospital with a new state-of-the-art, high-speed MRI scanner, meaning patients throughout the North Okanagan can now obtain an MRI scan locally.

NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR THE VJH FOUNDATIONA now familiar face is leading the way in supporting improved health care services in the North Okanagan. Kate McBrearty was announced as the new Executive Director of the Foundation in October.

PAST EVENTSThank you to each individual, business, organization, and community group that held a fundraising event for the VJH Foundation in support of better healthcare for North Okanagan residents.

SUPPORT YOUR HOSPITALVJH Foundation will be hosting the 50/50 draw at the Vernon Vipers vs. Langley Rivermen game on November 23.

The Miracle Bucket Society’s 5th Annual Power of the Purse raised $55,000 in 2019, with 1/3 of the proceeds going towards healthcare in our community.

From 2011 through 2019, the Annual Vernon Dragon Boat Festival has raised a total of $43,770 for mammography equipment at VJH.

Car seats are a vital safety measure for children, but not all families have room for a new one in their budget. VJHF co-funded the purchase of child car seats that will be distributed to families in need as part of the 2019 Child Safety Initiative by United Way.

To recognize the over 500 hardworking staff, physicians, and volunteers at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, the Foundation hosted a complimentary barbecue lunch as a thank you for their continual efforts and passionate care in our community.

The annual Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign ran from September 16-22, 2019. $18,774 was raised through cookie sales and the ongoing generous support from owners Dan & Jamie Currie.

For 13 years the Girls Gone Wild crew, led by Linda Donhauser, has held private bus tours and silent auction event fundraisers with proceeds going to local charities. This year, the GGW crew donated $1,000 to the hospital.

During the fall of 2019, all three Shopper’s Drug Marts in Vernon join together to raise funds for the LOVE YOU by Shoppers Drug Mart™ fall fundraising program. All funds raised through this campaign support women’s cancer care at VJH’s McMurtry-Baerg Cancer Centre.

The Longhorn Pub held the 8th Annual Rock for Care fundraiser, where a different B.C. band hit the stage every hour for 12 hours. $5,170 was raised for VJH Foundation.

Shoppers Drug Mart hosted a burger and beer night in support of women’s health at Alexander’s Beach Pub on November 3rd. All funds raised went towards the McMurtry-Baerg Cancer Centre at VJH.

Created and donated by the generous women in the Silver Star Quilters Guild, the raffling of this quilt raised $630 towards cancer care equipment. Come and support your local hockey

team and your hospital foundation.
