Re: heater hose leak at norma connector

I had a leak at the same connection in my 2000 MY xk8. I went tothe norma fitting web site with no help. My fitting was quite looseand profusely leaking. I looked at the job of removing the octopushose and basically panicked. I began to focus on the fitting. The fittingwould rotate freely but could not pull it out from around the metalpipe. I then cut the hose flush to the leaking fitting and with a shortsection of hacksaw blade destroyed and removed the offendingfitting. At this point the hose was not long enough to connect to thepipe so I used a short section of heater hose a brass hose splice and3 normal not norma hose clips and connected everything. It's been21k miles since the repair no leaks yet. I'd be most curious how andhow long it would take to remove and replace that heateroctopus/spaghetti of hoses. Please advise

| From another user in private message (my response in next post):

Hello. I saw your post (great octopus hose pic!) and too have leak inmine. With a pressure test, the plastic piece in the center of all thehoses has a pin hole leak and the hoses all seem ok. JTIS calls this aplastic piece a one way bypass valve?

My question is.. can I just replace this plastic piece with a hose spliceor is there some kind of one way valve inside of it? I didn't want todisable the car's heater and not having to touch those norma(whatever) connectors would be great.

I should add if I do have to replace the entire hose, how did you getthose connectors off? I've read others that did more damage to theother hoses and taking the blower off the engine really scares me.

Thanks again!

| My response to private message in preceding post below was asfollows:

Re: heater hoseI haven't analyzed the one-way valve, but I would guess that youwould not want to remove it. It probably acts like a backflowpreventor. With so many different things being serviced from thathose you do not want backpressure from one of the octopus endsfeeding back into the whatever is on the other side of the one-wayvalve. In other words, it is probably there for a reason. It reallywasn't that bad once I figured it out (removing the hose). First, I didnot have to take the blower off. (though I can't remember if I did thisrepair on my XK8 or my XKR (I have both). Either way, I don't thinkthe blower would be in the way. You do have to remove the throttlebody, but that is easy. The way I got the Norma connector off was byusing the piece that came on the new hose. It has a ring that youremove once the new hose is clicked into place. I just took that pieceoff and used it to unlock the norma connection on the old hose, thenput it back on the new hose. I just got done doing the fuel pump inmy XK8 and now believe you could use something like the fuel lineremoval tool (Autozone sells a pack of them of different sizes for$10) to "unlock" the norma connector, or something similar. Basicallyit just slides in there and pushes the locking clips out so you candisconnect it. The other "must have" tool for this job is a special pairof pliers to remove the hose clamps. It has plier handles with a cablethat leads to a device that you put on the clamp tabs. Then you

squeeze down and it opens the clamps so you can slide the clamp upon the pipe so you can remove the hose(s). Many of those clamps arehard if not impossible to get to with pliers, so the removal tool isinvaluable. There may be a way to patch the pin hole leak, but it'sprobably not worth the energy trying when you can replace the lineand be done with it in as much time. The leak signals that it's time toreplace the hose anyway, so you would only be prolonging theinevitable. Let me know if you need any additional info.

| 2001 xk8 61k miles. I think mine has a slight leak too, as I smellcoolant when I park in my garage. Other hoses are new. Dealerquoted me about $1150, and local mechanic was $900-1100,including gaskets etc.. I gather it is labor intensive, about 6 hrs. Iassume my extended warranty will not cover this as it's wear andtear. I'll wait for it to get a little worse before I invest that much in an11 year old car.
