Cricket plague ‘a harmless nuisance,’ say expertsDALEEN FOUCHÉ
A plague of crickets descended onthe Helderberg this week andcaused an uproar among residents.
Cricket infestations were report-ed from across the Helderberg andthe DistcitMail offices were no ex-ception. Last Monday, DistrictMailstaff were met by a carpet of crick-ets in- and outside the office andfirst had to rid the office of insectsbefore continuing with the day’sduties.
Responding to queries fromacross the city, Mayoral CommitteeMember for Health, LungiswaJames labelled the plague as a
“harmless nuisance”.James says the City of Cape Town
has consulted with scientists atStellenbosch University and theUniversity of Cape Town who saidthe cricket plague is likely as a re-sult of climatic conditions. “In par-ticular, the mild winter experi-enced last year coupled with theslightly wet summer, which fa-vours the hatching of cricket eggs, resulted in this population boom. The nymphs and crickets feed ex-clusively on grass roots.”
A local, retired entomologist, DrLeonard Mcleod, says he has neverseen anything like this plague.
He agrees that the recent rains
created favourable breeding condi-tions for the crickets and explainedthat in the study of animals manysuch phenomena have been record-ed.
Andrew Small, greenskeeper atthe Strand golf course, says fortu-nately there was no cricket problemat the golf course because insecti-cides are used on the fairway, add-ing that the crickets rather targetedgardens for food, where these chem-icals are not used.
Facebook was abuzz with reportsabout infestations. Commenting onthe DistrictMail Facebook Page,Sandra van der Walt said althoughcrickets have been visible in the
Strand for the past two months, thecrickets only became a seriousproblem last Monday.
Many complained about a lack ofsleep because of the insects’ con-stant chirping while others specu-lated that the plague was a sign ofheavy rains and a cold winter forthe Western Cape.
James says the City has been as-sured that the cricket numbers arelikely to dwindle with the onset ofwinter, when temperatures drop.
In the interim, residents areurged to block any gaps in theirhomes through which cricketsmight enter. Outside, experts ad-vise using a hose to flush them out.
A cricket plague erupted in the city thisweek and some were even spotted on thebeach!
