PART ONE: DESIGN - STREET TRADInG AnD HAwkInG:

Street trading and hawking within Asia consits of both legal and illegal goods, items such as DVDs, clothing, bags, electrical can be found in department stores and these items are all le-gal, but most people travel to Asia to buy illegal and fake goods. Most of these goods might be fake but the quality is so good and it makes it really hard to tell if these items are real or fake. These street hawkers are hurting the depart-ment stores because they are selling more then the real goods. The government might say they are trying to control these hawkers but I don’t believe this is true because you can find fake items anywhere in Asia. The value in this is that both hawkers and tourist as well as the police are all getting something out of it. Other street traders within Asia are people that are selling foods from small stands that move around, al-lowing the tourist and locals to buy traditional food that may not be customary to us.

FOOTSCRAY MARkET:

On 31st of July, we visited our nominated unfamiliar territory of Footscray. we walked around reviewing and observing the informal urban practices of Footscray market, Footscray station and then drove around the streets of Footscray. we docu-mented by taking random photo’s of peo-ple in these environments.

This suburb felt like being in another coun-try and not in Australia. The smells, the site and the people around this area played a major role in this. But taking a closer look at the photographs that we took, shows that it is a typical city in Australia as they go about their day to day living such as waiting to cross to road whilst doing some shopping, getting around or going home by public transport and parents taking their children to the local park to play at the swings.

The intervention action was to get the public involved in our game of hop scotch. we set the game up in Bourke Street on Saturday 7th of August. The weather was perfect for the general public to go shopping in the most popular street of Melbourne.

The types of people who wanted to join in this game were mostly tourist, who didn’t know how to play but were willing to learn and have fun. Overall everyone enjoyed themselves, allowing us to meet new people and keep this day as a happy memory. It was a pleasure to see people enjoying themselves in a simple game of hop scotch.

SOUTH yARRA FASHION PARADe:The direction that we were going in was to generate conversation tactics by asking the public various questions which are directed towards fashion as South yarra is known as the fashion street. We put together three boards all showing celebraties in fabulous and glamorous outfits.

The first was “Who got it right?” there were four pairs wearing same or similar outfits. The choice was from Gwyneth or Amanda, Miley or Jessica, Jessica Marais or Jennifer Hawkins and Sofia or Julianne Moore. The winner was Jessica Marais and Sofia Vergara with three points each then followed by one point each for Amanda, Miley and Gwyneth and no points to Julianne Moore and Jennifer Hawkins. This was very entertaining to hear why each wore it better and who got it wrong.Another conversation tactic was to spot five differences within an image everyone seemed to find them all easily.The last board was showing five celebraties, dressed in different outfits and they had to choose who looked the nicest. The two popular ones were kim kardashian and katy Perry. They all seemed to based their answers with who looked sexier, stylish and also personal-ity. when looking back we achieved what we set out do and made the day fun and enjoyable.

Throughout the first half of the semester we were given verious tasks that explores different Informal Urban Practices within different locations and

situations.

The first project was looking at street trading and hawking within Asia. The second project was working in pairs, so Ivan and I went to Footscray to report and document the Informal Urban Practices within the market setting, the train

station and the local park. The third project was to play hop scotch in Bourke Street, we wanted the public to come and join us and have a bit of fun. The fourth

project was going down to South yarra in a group, asking questions and documenting peoples answers and responses.

with all these mini projects this gave me an understanding of what an Informal Urban Practice is, which then lead to the informal trading market which

we traded our post cards with members from the class and also exchanged gifts to go along, I made honey joys.

From that we formed groups, Raluh and I are worked together we both want to

explore the idea of surreal, absurd and the silly.

Urban Treasure Hunt

Over the next 3 pages are some ideas of what the major project may consist of, from a urban treasure hunt, swap shop,installations that provoke thought or graffiti vs. art. For all these ideas I’ve selected some images to help me decide which direction we are wanting to go in.

The direction that we are wanting to experience is the surreal, absurd and the silly, investigating the informal urban practice within these elements will give us a better

understanding of how to appoarch this project.

We have looked into the above fctors such as testing and looking at installations that provoke thought, graffiti vs. art, swap shop and an Urban Treasure Hunt.

We are liking the idea of having an Urban Treasure Hunt within the city, we will experiement on riddles, clues and destination maps, all these areas will express the final

outcome for the project.

The projects will be conducted within the city centre, as we will experience all types of people that will be beneficial to our final results.

DESIGN STATEMENT

The Urban Treasure Hunt final presentation documents the practices taken place within the CBD.

This is an urban game that guides the users along a path to experience the various informal urban practices and locations along the way.

The users pick up different treasures at each location i.e. the treasure is the experience. This game took place along 3 pathways, which were predeter-mined by us.

each pathway takes the users on a journey to different locations with the help of instructions by either a booklet or audio tour, whichever they may

wish to choose to complete the Urban Treasure Hunt.

Martine chose to go down Pathway One with the help of the booklet tour. where she was given a camera to document and explored the informal urban practices she comes to within the urban treasure hunt. Along the way she came across many informal urban practices, but the one that she was interested in the the Pink Ribbon Day stand at Federation Square.Where she had a conversation about this foundation and purchased a wrist band. She joined the mailing list to get more information about the foundation.

lois chose to go down Pathway Two with the help of the audio tour. where she explored the informal urban practices within the treasure hunt. where she was given a camera to document and explored the informal urban practices the urban treasure hunt. Along the way she came across three informal urban practices, the first one is at the Flagstuff Gardens where she took in the the informal practice of Ti Chi. The second was a youth homeless food bus where she offered to help serve food for the homeless and the final informal practice was lighting a candle and making a preyer at St. Patricks Cathedral.

PART TWO: TechnologyInspiration:

Modular piece of furniture is made from card. This design takes on the human body as the curves on the lounge chair takes the form of the contours on the body. when the Rhino drawing was completed we then took the material to the laser cutter, so it will cut it down so then we can construct it by following the number and then glueing it together.

I traded my honey joys and post cards with other members of the class, collecting a range of post cards and other goods such as

chocolat, biscuits and lollies.

Here is a selection of cards which have

different riddles. All these cards where done at

different stages of the design process. All using different

forms and methods which will help them complet the

journey. The cards where easy to print on with the home printer and then I cut them down to size

and placed them in an envolpe.

These are the final design of the cards before we changed the outline of the

treasure hunt from cards to a booklet form or audio tour.

These cards are double sided one with a riddle and the other side with a clue which has a circled letter which would will help

solve the final destination.

The technology part of the urban treasure hunt as a booklet form looks at the various pathways which

are created. The treasure is the experiences collected along the way.

This booklet is A5 portrait format which splits the information into two parts on the page, one being

pathway one which begins at A location and he other is pathway two which begins with B location.

The audio verious has the same information as the booklet but is recorded as an MP3 and placed on an

Ipod.
