Over a 30 year career he has won multiple craft awards for his cinematography world wide . SHOOTING THE TURKISH STARS

I n 2000 Laurie K Gilbert was invited by Flight Command of Turk Ylidizlari (Turkish Air Force ) to travel to Konya and spend almost 8 weeks shooting in-cockpit air to air video of the legendary

supersonic aerobatics team, The Turkish Stars. After designing and custom building specialist camera mounts to fit inside the Northolt F4b camera ship, he flew innumerable sorties with the 7 aircraft team all over Turkey, operating the Canon video cameras in a supersonic G force environment. Several of the final films won awards for the craft of cinematography from prestigious film festivals and professional associations in both New York and in Asia.

Olympic Sailing Regatta - Cineflex Camera Operator

D uring the 2012 London Olympic Games Laurie, who was working on his 3rd Olympic Sailing assignment for Olympic Broadcast Services, displayed his knowledge of competitive sailing and excellence with the Cineflex Camera

System. Operating offshore from an AS355 helicopter at 500-1000 feet for 5 hrs a day for 14 days Laurie’s expertise and coverage of our event did not go unnoticed. O n November 2012, the IOC in Lausanne announced that the Olympic Sailing Television Team had been awarded the prestigious Golden Rings Gold Award for the Best Sports Coverage of the 2012

London Olympic Games, exactly the same award the team won previously at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Laurie K Gilbert operated as a helicopter aerial cameraman for both teams at both events.

SHOOTING THE 2008 BEIJING OLYMPICS Olympic Sailing Regatta - Scorpio Aerial Camera Operator

T he 2008 Beijing Olympic Games was the second Olympic Sailing Regatta after 1988 in Korea, that Laurie operated as one of three specialist, sailing helicopter cameraman alongside Bruce Sabin and Adam Brown. This aerial team operated a helicopter

mounted Cineflex and Scorpio camera systems from an operational base inside the Qing Dao Olympic compound. The camera ships were Chinese Air Force Dauphin helicopters flown by military pilots and flight crew. The camera team’s live, gyro-stabilised imagery was combined with the water and land based cameras to become the world feed from Qing Dao. This coverage was ultimately awarded the IOC Golden Rings Gold Award for “ Best Sports Coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.”

THE ROY E. DISNEY CONNECTION

F or 17 years between 1990 - 2007 Laurie operated worldwide as a specialist marine cinematographer shooting sailing projects with Executive Producer Roy E Disney and his talented associates at Channel Sea Television. These

projects included feature films and multiple documentaries for ESPN on the TRANSPAC Race, the Kenwood Cup Regatta, the Rolex Series in Europe and the Key West Regatta in Florida. In 2007 he operated as an aerial cameraman with Roy as director, as they filmed Hawaii offshore sequences for the Walt Disney film Morning Light.

RECENT INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

O n Monday March 31st 2015 a specialist aerial cinematography team took to the air over Kuala Lumpur to shoot critical pick-ups for the new feature film for Paramount Pictures, Mission Impossible Five - Rogue Nation. The camera

team had previously shot test imagery of the city skyline which had then been sent to London for approval and a visual story board was then supplied with exact imagery requirements for the final film. A Red Dragon motion picture camera and 25mm - 250mm lens was mounted on a gyro stabilised Continental Side Mount and this was all installed inside the Solaire Helicopters AS355 camera ship based at Subang Sky-

park. The aerial director was Bill Donovan of Biscuit Films and Chief pilot from Solaire Helicopters was Cliff Fournier

construction and development of three new international ports in Togo West Africa, Saudi Arabia and Turkey for Terminal Investment Ltd. Extensive coverage of each location as well as executive interviews and country cultural imagery for NY based production company Lifestyle International.

CLIENT: Airbus Helicopters France LOCATION: Kuala Lumpur Malaysia PROJECT: Helicopter aerial air to air photography and cinematography of the Asia Roadshow

demonstration of the EC175 and EC145T2 aircraft to potential clients in Malaysia. Aerial Marine Media worked side by side with aviation experts from France to document

flights of both aircraft and client reaction to the Airbus Helicopters product.

CLIENT: Airbus Helicopters France LOCATION: Hua Hin, Thailand PROJECT: Extensive video coverage of the programme

designed to train pilots and flight crews of the Royal Thai Police Air Wing in the SAR operation of a fleet of new Dauphin helicopters purchased for in Thailand. Captain Frederick Hatton led a French aviation team instructing their Thai counterparts in all aspects of the operation of the aircraft

hour ESPN Asia documentary of the 2009 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge - shooting from two Search & Rescue aircraft operated by the Olive Group. Six cameramen and a production support team spent five days and nights operating from the Moreeb Hill bivouac camp in the southern deserts of the UAE

CLIENT: Mediterranean Shipping Company - Geneva LOCATION: Port Of Antwerp, Belgium Nov 2011 PROJECT: Extensive aerial sequences of the surrounding

infrastructure of the Home Port of Antwerp in Belgium for a global corporate communications film to market the the facilities and shipping capabilities of the largest privately owned shipping company in the world. Format was HD 4:4:4 shot with a V14 Cineflex Camera mounted on an EC355

CLIENT: Channel Sea Television Los Angeles USA LOCATION: Honolulu, Hawaii PROJECT: A dramatic twenty minute documentary on the

challenges of the 2007 Trans Pacific Yacht Race from Long Beach in California to Diamond Head in Waikiki. The DOP worked as far as 30 miles offshore in a helicopter with E.P. Roy E Disney, to capture the excitement and the drama of one of the most spectacular historic offshore yachting events in the world.

CLIENT: World Race Productions USA LOCATION: Penang, Sabah & Singapore PROJECT: The Amazing Race: Specialist helicopter

aerial cinematographer over Penang, Sabah and Singapore during the visit of the contestants competing in two different series of the USA version of The Amazing Race. The aerial camera team was flown by Weststar Aviation in Penang and Singapore and Sabah Air in Sabah.

CLIENT: Grand Banks Yachts Seattle USA LOCATION: China Sea - Malaysia PROJECT: Extensive helicopter aerial photography and

video coverage of the GB41 and GB53 yachts which were shot off the east coast of Malaysia. The material is designed be used globally for magazine release and sales and marketing purposes.

CLIENT: FBC Media / CNBC World Business Report LOCATION: The rainforests of Sarawak, Malaysia PROJECT: A helicopter aerial expedition over the vast rain

forest habitat of the Orang Utan population indigenous to Sarawak in East Malaysia. The flight was to document the reality of the conservation efforts practiced by the Malaysian Government and the very dedicated team of forest rangers in the region. The helicopter was supplied by Hornbill Airways of Kuching.

CLIENT: Chris Lloyd Helicopters Singapore LOCATION: Kuala Lumpur Malaysia PROJECT: Helicopter Air To Air Photography Helicopter air to air photography of the maiden

flight of the first R66 jet turbine helicopter to be flown in S.E. Asia . The helicopter is owned by Lloyd Helicopters in Singapore and was flown by both Chris Lloyd and also by Cliff Fournier of Solaire Helicopters, Malaysia.

CLIENT: Freemantle Media Asia LOCATION: Kuala lumpur, Malaysia PROJECT: Cineflex helicopter aerials of the Kuala

Lumpur CBD and skyline for the opening sequence of the Apprentice Asia television series. The camera ship was an AS355 supplied by Solaire helicopters and the

sequences were directed by Zena Chooi

CLIENT: Suncraft International Inc LOCATION: Penang Malaysia PROJECT: Navy Fast Patrol Boat Extensive HD Video and photographic stills

coverage of a Malaysian built Fast Patrol Boat for global export. The client was Suncraft International in Singapore and the aerial camera ship was an EC120 from Kuala Lumpur based company Integrated Special Services flown by Capt. Sabri.

CLIENT: Softbank Teleco Japan LOCATION: Marina Sands Casino Singapore PROJECT: A cinema commercial designed to market

Softbank Telecom products to a younger audience in Japan. The aerial camera crew spent two hours shooting the Marina Bay Sands Casino from the air at sunset from an AS355 helicopter provided by MHS Helicopters in Kuala Lumpur. Prod House was Pop Films Malaysia.

CLIENT: Hyde Park Entertainment Hollywood LOCATION: Bangkok Thailand PROJECT: The Street Fighter - Legend of Chun Li

A series of 35mm helicopter aerial sequences shot over the Thai city and river locations of Bangkok, for inclusion in the Hollywood feature film The Street Fighter - Legend of Chun Li released globally in March 2009. The film was directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak and the BK117 aerial camera ship was provided by theThai company Sai - Chang Flying Services.

CLIENT: Airbus Helicopters Malaysia LOCATION: Bukit Tinggi Malaysia PROJECT: 100 Ferraris from Indonesia, Singapore

and Malaysia spent a week driving, socializing and promoting the Leaping Horse in Asia. Airbus Helicopters hired Aerial Marine Media to shoot helicopter aerial imagery of various track and cross country driving events which could then be used by Ferrari for their global publicity and branding requirements.

CLIENT: Beijing Olympic Broadcasters China LOCATION: Qing Dao, China PROJECT: One of three specialist cameramen responsible

to the Chinese host broadcaster for shooting the global aerial television coverage of the 2008 Olympic Sailing Regatta in the city of Qingdao. On 16th Dec 2008, the I.O.C. awarded the entire sailing television team the Golden Rings Award for the “Best Sports Coverage of The Olympic Games” in competition to the producers of 37 other Olympic sports.

CLIENT: BBC/Discovery Television Europe LOCATION: Pedang in Sumatra, Indonesia. PROJECT: “Voyage To The Heart Of The Tsunami”

Helicopter aerial sequences of the city of Pedang in West Sumatra, for a documentary film on the analysis of the active undersea geological features of the Indonesian coastline and their relationship to potential volcanic activity.

CLIENT: Port Of Tanjung Pelepas LOCATION: Johor Bahru, Malaysia PROJECT: Extensive aerial sequences of the surrounding

infrastructure of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia for an international corporate communications film to market the location of the facilities in competition to PSA in Singapore . Format was HD 4:4:4 shot with an Arri Alexa mounted on a Continental Magnum mount flown by an EC350 from Helistar

Documentary film of the classic sail boat race Les Voiles De San Tropez in the Mediterranean off the south of France. This annual competition attracts some of the most significant vintage racing boats in the world.

CLIENT: Rolex, Geneva Switzerland LOCATION: Costa Smeralda Yacht Club, Sardinia PROJECT: 2004 Rolex Maxi Worlds Regatta

Documentary coverage of the final event of the 2004 Rolex Maxi Worlds series which was held offshore from the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club, on the Italian island of Sardinia. The event attracts the cream of the worlds’ maxi racing yacht skippers and crews.

CLIENT: Mediterranean Shipping Company - Geneva LOCATION: Port Of Santos Brazil Jan 2012 PROJECT: Extensive aerial sequences of the surrounding

infrastructure of the Port of Santos in Brazil . Format was HD shot with a Sony EX3 Camera operating from an EC355 off the roof top helipad of MSC Santos.

CLIENT: Republic Of Singapore Navy LOCATION: 100 miles offshore from Singapore PROJECT: Complex Cineflex helicopter aerials involving

battle formations of the Singapore Navy for a 2013 domestic cinema and television advertising campaign. The project was directed by Desmond Tan, produced by Salt Films and the AS355 aerial camera ship was flown by Capt Lim of Weststar Aviation in Subang, Malaysia.

CLIENT: Cicada Films London/Discovery UK LOCATION Mount Tambora - Indonesia PROJECT: The Year Without Summer

Helicopter aerial sequences of a team of European vulcanologists investigating the geology of the caldera of Mt Tambora on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa. The material was for a for a UK commissioned documentary production on global effects of the volcano's eruption in 1815.

CLIENT: Exxon Mobile Singapore LOCATION: Singapore PROJECT: Jurong Facility Imagery

Extensive helicopter aerial photographic coverage of the ExxonMobile facility and processing operation at Jurong Island in Singapore.

CLIENT: DBS Bank Singapore LOCATION: Sydney Harbour PROJECT: Horizon Investment Television Campaign

A television advertising campaign commissioned by DBS Bank in Singapore with the creative theme of “Horizon”. The series of four 35mm film commercials were shot in locations that included Sydney harbour and the Blue Mountains.

Extensive helicopter aerial 16mm motion picture coverage of the port facilities of the city of Singapore, as part of a global PSA corporate communications project.

CLIENT: Royal Shell Petroleum, London UK LOCATION: Royal Sultanate of Brunei PROJECT: A series of 35mm film commercials for a

global branding campaign for Royal Dutch Shell Petroleum. Advertising agency was J Walter Thompson, production company was Serious Pictures London and Director was Ivan Bird. A Tyler Gyro mount was mounted into a Sikorski S61 Sea King Helicopter to shoot offshore images of a Brunei based oil rig.

CLIENT: Roy E Disney, Hollywood USA LOCATION: Los Angeles, Hawaii & the Pacific Ocean PROJECT: 2005 Centennial Trans Pacific Yacht Race

Production of an 18 minute and a 60 minute television documentary of the 2005 Centennial Trans Pacific Yacht Race from Long Beach in California to Honolulu, Hawaii. L’Image Cinematography was responsible for the offshore helicopter aerial, motion picture imagery.

the Key West Regatta in Florida, USA for the ESPN11 television network as part of their commitment to world class television coverage of international sailing.

Aerial cinematography for a film on the skill and showmanship of the Top Gun pilots of the Turkish Air Force aerobatic team, the Turkish Stars. The film won multiple awards around the world for its radical in cockpit cinematography

CLIENT: National Environment Agency Singapore LOCATION: Jurong, Singapore PROJECT: Semakau Wild Life Island Photographic and video coverage of a new

man - made wild life reserve which has been created from incinerator ash, offshore from Jurong Island, in Singapore. Video was used in a National Geographic documentary and photographic imagery was used by the Singapore Straits Times.

CLIENT: Sands Casino, USA LOCATION: Singapore Waterfront PROJECT: Singapore IR Development Extensive helicopter aerial coverage of the

URA Singapore Land Bank area which has been chosen for the future development of an International Resort and Casino complex.

CLIENT: Universal Marine Holland LOCATION: Horsburgh Lighthouse, Pedra Branca, PROJECT: Papuan Gulf Photographic Imagery Extensive photographic coverage of a new

container ship build for Universal Marine in Holland by a Chinese shipyard. The ship was on its maiden voyage when it was photographed off the coast of Malaysia and Indonesia, in the Pedra Branca area of waterway approach to Singapore.

Helicopter aerial cinematographer working directly with Roy E. Disney on the Hawaii offshore sequences for his Hollywood feature film “Morning Light” . DOP Laurie K. Gilbert also did many of the offshore marine equipment trials in preproduction and shot the specialist Mako Head and Tyler Mount footage used in the final film.

S ince 1997, cinematographer Laurie K. Gilbert has successfully completed five international

BOSIET & H.U.E.T training courses in Australia, Vietnam and Malaysia. He is the only specialist marine cinematographer operating world wide from Asia who is accredited by OPITO internationally until Aug. 2018.
