Snowboarding was born in the Kaçkar Mountains!"My first time heliskiing in this region was mindblowing! After a couple of days riding perfect powder in these great mountains we had the good fortune of meeting the local Lazboarders. Immediately I realized that the history of snowboarding had to be rewritten!

For years the Laz-tribe have been riding these simple wooden boards without bindings, a rope held in thefront hand and stick in the back hand. Nowadays the Lazboards are used mainly for fun but back in oldentimes these boards were used as a means of transport in wintertime, either for supplies or bringing a sickperson down to the valley...

Each of my three visits created unforgettable moments, sharing the common love for riding some of the worlds-best freeride terrain with the locals. Now it is your turn to discover and experience this hidden treasure in the Turkish Kaçkar Mountains. Join me in March for an unforgettable week of heli-boarding and a chance to meet and ride with the Lazboarders.

A few years later, US Freeride legend Jeremy Jones came to the Kaçkar mountains to film. Convinced thatsnowboarding was born in the USA, discovering the Lazboarders was a huge surprise! He asked 72 yearsold Lazboarder Selim Kara how long people had been riding these boards.

"I started riding in 1946. My dad and grandfather taught me and told me that even my great great-grandfather had ridden these boards!"
