Just Some Thoughts from Your......
Potentate and First LadyHAPPY 2021 to all the Nobility and Ladies at Hella Shrine Temple! Hopefully 2021 will be a better year and we can (to copy Illustrious Sir Jim Smith, Imperial Poten-tate) “Have fun in ’21!”
Thank you all for having the confidence to elect me as your Leader of Hella Temple. My Lady Dianne and I will do our best to make 2021 a good year at Hella. We have numerous, fun events planned and hope you all will attend if you feel comfortable. Health and safety are our number one concern for everyone, and we will do our best to make everything safe.
Thank you to John and Patty Krodel for the wonderful job they did in leading Hella in 2020. I know it was not the year they had planned, but they did a great job with what they had to work with. Divan Mid-Winter and their Ball in February were a huge success with several Imperial Of-ficers and their Ladies present. Thank you, John and Patty, for a great year!
Please join Lady Dianne and me at our Ball, “A Night to Remember”, on Saturday, February 13, 2021. This will be a fun night for all with good food and dancing to The Blandelles. Do not forget to buy your tickets and RSVP with the Hella Shrine Office, 972-240-6624.

Chief Rabban As we start the new year, I have mixed emotions. Like many of you, I am happy to see 2020 end, but at the same time many of the issues from last year are still with us. The Corona virus did not magically disappear after the election as some predicted. Washington is still embroiled in partisan politics and the economy is struggling. Despite what is happening in the world around us, we need to remind ourselves that the Shrine was founded on the concept of fun and fellowship. We can still have fun while social distancing. We can support a fellow noble on the phone if not in person. You see, fellowship is more than a handshake and an arm around you shoulder. Fellowship is that comfort and support that we get from
being in the company of our equals. And in the Shrine, we are all equals regardless of what office we hold or how many years we have been a member. We have many activities planned for the year trying to bring fun and fellowship back to Hella. Like last year, some of these plans may change, but we must continue to try. At the February Stated Meeting, we will be presenting the Temple budget for approval It has been a challenge to put together a balanced realistic budget. As a result of the pandemic rental income is still falling behind historic levels. To make up for the loss in income your Divan has tried to cut costs where possible. We are taking a hard look at the way things have always been done and looking for a way to move forward. I look forward to seeing each of you at the Shrine in the near future, but until it is safe to do so, I ask that you keep up your guard and keep yourself safe. We are trying to have some virtual committee meetings to allow more people to participate. This way you can take part in some of the planning for our fundraisers and Charitable events without having to drive to Hella. In addition, we are working on improving communication. We understand that you want to be informed of what is going on at the Temple and we are trying bring back frequent communications.

Here’s wishing you all the utmost safety and good health. The Membership committee meet-ing will continue! The meeting interval has now changed to the 4th Wednesday, at 6:30 pm. Dinner WILL be served at each meeting…..
As we all know, the Covid Vaccine is on the horizon and being distributed, hopefully some level of normalcy will prevail as a result during this year, and allow Hella to get back to the
business at hand. I hope to see you at the meeting!
It’s with great honor and humility that I accepted and was installed in January to represent Hella as Assistant Rabban. I’ll perform the duties of my office to the best of my ability. Please step forward when asked to participate in our ef-forts of encouraging new members, and welcoming them and their families to their Hella Shrine family!
We continue to encourage each of you to be safe and adhere to social distancing when possible. If you are in a high-risk category, I strongly urge you to wear the protection during any meetings at the Temple and remain safe.
If you don’t feel comfortable within a group of 10+, certainly stay home and stay safe.
Upcoming Meetings and Events:

We currently have 4 petitions in hand with their payment, and we have at least 3 more in the works.
My plan is to visit as many lodges as possible, encouraging Master Masons to become Nobles of the Shrine, by en-lightening them of our activities and Fun and Fellowship that awaits them and their families!
There are 130 Masonic Lodges within our jurisdiction and 66 within a 40-mile radius of the Temple. These 66 will be my primary focus this year, though all 130 Lodge Secretary will receive a letter to be read at their Stated meetings about Hella and encouraging all who are interested to contact me. I will need assistance! I’ll speak to the overall plan during the first Membership meeting… please come and participate!!
All Nobles must continue to exhibit an Ambassador role when communicating our purpose and activities to all Master Masons within the appendant bodies that we attend. This is VERY important!
We are HELLA, and we serve the greatest purpose in support of our Shriners Hospitals for Children and your Temple.
Please stand up and be counted when called upon to lead or participate.

High Priest and ProphetGreeting Nobles,
In talking with the rest of the Divan and, in my just looking into what we can do to strength-en both the Hospital Committee and the Fundraising Committee, the decision has been made to combine the two into one. Going forward it will be known as Hella Shriners Fundraising. We will meet the last Monday of each month. This was done to help accommodate those that attend meetings on Tues, Wed, Thurs, and Fri of the week we have our Stated Meetings. This will give a night off in that week for some folks. We will meet for the first time on Feb 22nd, with dinner at 6:30 and the meeting at 7:00. As always, our ladies are more than welcome to attend!
I think this will help us garner more members for the committee and also help us streamline the committee pro-cess and work on both aspects of fundraising as a group instead of two different bodies. We have the following events already set up: ∙ Hospital Bucket Drive in May ∙ Cornhole - 2 tournaments in March and September ∙ IBCA - BBQ Cook-Off in September ∙ Trade Days - Various Dates
We have some other things that we are just trying to finalize before we actually post them as events. We need your help, and your ideas, on what we can do for both Hella and the hospitals. I want Hella to be back on top of the lists for donations, awards and simply for what we do for the hospitals. NOT for any kind of recognition, but so we KNOW that we did all we could for the kids at our hospitals! The money we raise for the hospitals obviously goes straight to them. The money we raise for Hella makes sure we have the ability to raise that money for the hospitals, so they are both equally important. Come be part of the committee! I will get emails out to the Nobility and I want us as a committee to talk to the Nobility in person to invite them to be part of our committee. I told the ones at the stated meeting last Thursday that we would be getting with them on the committee and their opportunity to become part of it with us. My motto to the nobility this year is going to be “We will get with you! We hope you’ll get with us!” I hope to see you all Feb 22nd at 6:30 !

Hella Clowns The Hella Clowns are hitting the ground running for 21. The Texas Clown Mid-Winter is March 4th - 6th in Wichita Falls. We need everyone’s support as we can’t wait to compete and represent Hella. We also have Impe-rial in Houston and TSA coming up. We will cotinue to represent Hella as we bring home awards as usual. We stand ready to help with the plans for a very exciting year to come.

Oriental GuideGreetings Nobles!
As a child I remember my Grandmother, Alline Dove, taking me to play Bingo at Hel-la Shrine. I remember the Easter Egg Hunts, Bazaars, Circuses, Clowns, scimitar belt buck-les, Egyptian car emblems, and rhinestone-studded fuzzy hats. I knew my Grandfather and his friend, Bill Dove and J.W. Nelson, were improving their community while having fun – I just didn’t know what they were doing. After becoming a Mason I started understanding more of what they did and WHY they did
it. Shriners help kids; what a mission statement! In my mind Hella Shrine is not just a large building, it is an activity and an identity. It is not a millionaire’s club, nor is it a halfway house, it is a vehicle we can use to radically alter the trajectory of a child’s life. I likely have not told you anything you didn’t already know, but I wanted to echo how important Hella Shrine is and what an impact it made on my life. Seeing these events and emblems, and being reminded of the mission of this Mystic Order has left a strong impression on me, “I want to be a part of this”. I would like to thank everyone for their support and confidence in my new role. As your Oriental Guide. I’ve been tasked with absorbing all the knowledge I can this year and I am up to that challenge. I look forward to serving Hella Shrine in any way I can. Never hesitate to reach out to me, I’d love to help.

Chaplin’s CornerA wise king named Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”
Our Potentate emphasized the need for teamwork in his message at the recent Leadership Seminar. It’s essential for the success of Hella that we unite as a group of Nobel’s working together as a team. Casey Stengel made a comment about the challenge of managing a professional baseball team. His observation applies to life in general. He said, “It’s easy to get good players. Getting’ em to play together, that’s the hard part.”
Each of us faces that issue. How do I blend my abilities and talents with those of other people? How do I cooperate with others so we can reach our goal? That question applies to Hella, to family life and certainly to our walk with God. The key to success is working with others. Pride and selfishness hinder a team from being successful. We need to all put pride and selfishness behind us this year.
Due to many reasons membership at Hella has been declining over the past several years. With fewer members it’s even more important, for the success of Hella, that we all work together as one successful team. Mother Teresa once said “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.’ My prayer is that Hella will work together and do great things this year.
Please inform the Hella office staff if you, or anyone you know becomes ill or injured. As Chaplin I would like to visit our fellow Nobels who may be in distress, even if it is only with a phone call. We are a team!

From the Treasurer’s Chest
The motto this year of our Imperial Sir is “Have fun in 2021”! We are cur-rently crafting the budget this year to hopefully to do just that. All of the of-ficers are installed and are in their stations with nice shining faces. When I submitted the article last month, the plan was to present Hella’s 2021 Budget to the Nobility for approval at the January Stated Meeting. We now have the final pieces to finish out the budget and will present it at the Febru-
ary Stated Meeting as we have in the past. As stated to the Nobility, there are no current plans for asking the Nobility to draw additional monies from reserves in the budget. It is imperative that we work our budget to fund ourselves without dipping into the reserves. One of the big changes for Hella this year is that we are out of the private catering business. We will focus our energies to concentrate on leasing out the ballroom, terrace room, Rooms A and B for private events at a higher but more competitive rate. We realized we were spending too much to operate catering and not realizing a profit. The Holiday Santa Magical Show was our surprise Temple fundraising event this year. We prof-ited about $30,000.00 just for the one event. In December 2021 we’ll two of these Holiday Santa Magical Shows. We plan on two other Magic Show events in June, one in Sherman and the other in Texarkana. Look for more info as the shows develope. The bulletin board outside the double doors in the middle of the ballroom is the place to go to get an overview of our present financial position. It will remain up until the next meeting. As a reminder, 2021 dues are due. Please let us know if we can assist if you’re experiencing problems in paying. It is that time of year again and the Clubs and Unit Financial Reports are due. Please complete them ASAP and forward them to Hella. It is more important than ever that we remain in compli-ance with the IRS requirements for non-profits. At Hella we strive to see to your safety at our meetings and our events. Sometimes that requires having to ask Shrines to make difficult decisions in terms of attendance. We will all get together soon enough and be the fun Shriners that we know we are. Until next month, may brotherly love prevail, and peace and harmony be our chief strength and support.

FUNDRAISING-FUNDRAISING-FUNDRAISINGWELCOME TO 2021!!
I am ALL ABOUT Fundraising this year! We’re going to do our absolute best to collect all we can for the Hospitals and for Hella! And, before I go too far….WE NEED YOU ON THE FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE!! We will meet the last Monday of each month. We are looking into possibly holding some Zoom meetings, or making it so some folks can Zoom into an in-person meeting. We want to do whatever we can to help accommodate those that would like to attend but may have scheduling issues, or may be a 45 minute or hour drive into Hella. If you want to be part of the committee we will do all we can to accommodate you! In our meetings, we’ll go over all the different fundraising events we will work and support from the Bucket Drive to IHOP day to the events we’ll hold for the benefit of Hella. We are looking into other ideas for us to be able to raise some more money for the hospitals as well. We just need to think outside the box and become creative in what we do to raise the money! Illustrious Sir Bob Moore talked about Temples, Shrine Clubs, Units and all the other groups coming down to present checks to the hospital board. I want Hella to wear out a path from Garland to Galveston to present checks to the board! I want our folks on first name basis with the board. I know we are all still waiting to see what is going to happen as far as shutdowns or restrictions go, but we also need to just get back to as much normality as we can. Get back to coming to the events at Hella, to helping like we all did in 2019. Let’s just get back to doing what we do…because we do that better than anyone else! I want Hella back in it’s rightful place at the top of the lists for donations, for awards, and for the other accolades that show NOT how great WE are…but how PROUD we are for the things we do for the kids of our hospitals! That is ALL that matters! The Fundraising Committee will be getting out some emails to the Nobility as well as talking to you personally. We need YOU to help us accomplish the goals we have set out for our committee. We need YOU to be a part of the team. As I said at the Stated Meeting….We’ll get with you, we hope you’ll get with us! Dear Fellow Nobles, Being a Shriner has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I love our Fraternity and all the opportunities it affords me: To be part of a selfless, compassionate brotherhood; to improve the world and our home communities; and to make incredible differences in the lives of children. And through it all, to have fun! Sharing these experiences with other good men is why we work so hard to increase our membership numbers. So I’m especially pleased to let you know that the all-new, revamped BeAShrinerNow.com website has launched, making it easier than ever for all of us to bring new members into our fraternity.Our Shriners International marketing and membership teams have worked hard to make this tool attractive, ef-fective and very easy to use. In addition, we’ve aimed to train at least one Noble from each Temple on the ins and outs of the new website, so if you have questions, there should be someone in your Temple who can help. Together as brothers, we improve lives and communities, and we enjoy having fun together all the while. I can’t wait to start using this amazing new website to help us spread the word and bring even more men of good character into our Fraternity.

Hella Flying FezzesThe Flying Fezzes are looking to blue and calm skies for 2021. We plan to resume our meetings in February but have not found a permanent home. If you’re interested in joining us, contact the Agitated Adjutant Steve Eason at the number and email listed below and we’ll put you on our flight schedule. The Flying Fezzes were formed with the sole purpose of providing air transportation for burned or crippled children to Shrine Hospitals. Our flights have stopped, but our mission as Flying Fezzes has evolved to promot-ing the Shrine Hospitals. We perform that mission by participating in local parades and all Hella Shrine events. All Nobles who would like to be in any Parade where Shriners participate, come join us with a Hella shirt of any kind and your fez to ride the plane float. In late 2019, we shared with you our plans for a combined Texas facility that would showcase multiple major care disciplines. Today we are pleased to announce that Shriners Hospitals for Children — Houston and Shriners Hospitals for Children — Galveston, have now consolidated their world-renowned specialty pediatric health care services on the Galveston campus and will now be known as Shriners Children’s Texas.
Our dedication to the children and their families remains the same – transforming children’s lives with exceptional health care in a patient- and family-centered environment. Operating on the same campus will position us well to achieve our strategic goals for the future. This change provides us with a modernized and integrated approach to meet-ing our patients’ needs. The main reason for the decision was to improve the system’s efficiency without sacrificing access to the same outstanding care Shriners Hospitals has been able to provide children for almost 100 years.
Merging the two hospitals together into one location not only demonstrates good stewardship for a hospital system that provides care regardless of the family’s ability to pay, but also brings together a team of highly-skilled clinical provid-ers that will deliver “Texas-sized” care for all Shriners Children’s patients.
This strategic vision marks a commitment to transforming how our health care is delivered, while maintaining our mis-sion of providing the highest quality care to children with orthopedic conditions, burn injuries, cleft lip and palate, and plastic surgery. This is an energizing journey – to grow and to treat more children as we look toward the future. While we anticipate a more formal opening sometime this summer, we wanted to share this tremendous news as we celebrate the furthering of our incredible mission.

Membership Committee The Membership Committee meets the first Wednesday of the month and we hope we will have our next meeting on August 5, 2020. We are always looking for motivated Nobles and their Ladies to promote Hella Shrine. The purpose of the Membership Committee is to promote the Shrine and there are many opportunities to help. We need Ambassadors to promote the Shrine in the Blue Lodges. We also are trying to put together a phone committee to reach out to Nobles to invite them to come down and enjoy the fun and fellowship that is the Shrine. We also need people to help with some of the membership events that are coming up. If you have an idea on how we can promote the Shrine, we would love to hear them. So come on down to the Shrine and join us on the Membership Committee. We will not have a light meal at 6:30 as in the past, the meeting starts at 7:00 pm on the first Wednesday of each month.

Dear Noble Sirs, At the Imperial Session, we saw the unveiling of new Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder’s “Just One” campaign to increase Shriner membership. A simple but powerful idea drives this initiative: If every current Shriner commits to recruiting or restoring “just one” noble to his temple, the ranks of our brotherhood will swell tremendously. In order to build enthusiasm for the Just One initiative and keep it going, we are instituting a multi-level program for recognizing and rewarding top-line signers in the creation/restoration process for their successful efforts bringing in new members or restoring suspended members. These are:• Level 1 – Upon creation or restoration of one member, the top-line signer will receive a postcard and Just One pin from Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder.• Level 2 – Upon bringing in two members, the top-line signer will be listed in the Shriner Magazine.• Level 3 – With three new creations or restorations, the top-line signer will receive a certificate of appreciation and a letter of commendation from Imperial Sir Sowder.• Level 4 – After five creations or restorations, the top-line signer will receive a personal phone call from the Imperial Potentate.• Level 5 – Top-line signers responsible for 10 additional Shriner brothers will receive a special invitation to attend a Just One VIP reception with the Imperial Divan at the 2020 Imperial Session. Along with these points of recognition, your temple will probably also want to honor your brothers who embrace the challenge of helping grow local membership. As a record-keeping aid, “Just One” prospect cards were presented at Imperial Session, and will be made available to temples to share with their members.
