In the spring issue of Spreading Good News, we shared with you that David Webb was retiring at the end of February 2016 as Western Area Manager for Trust and Endowment Development. He is now enjoying retirement and reports are that he is busier than ever doing all kinds of ministry work and spending time with family.

We are pleased to announce that we have hired a new Western Area Manager, but there will be a new twist. This position will be split between the NC Baptist Foundation and NC Baptist Financial Services, with a second title of Associate Managing Director. Give a warm welcome to Rev. Dr. D. Allen Schuyler of Charlotte.

Allen has been senior pastor at Candlewyck Baptist Church in Charlotte since 1995 and previously served at FBC in Petersburg, VA; Bogue Banks Baptist Church in Atlantic Beach; FBC of Carthage and Buies Creek FBC. Allen has served in various leadership capacities at both the state and association levels in NC and VA. He received his Doctorate of Ministry

and Master of Divinity at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Religion at Campbell University.

We look forward to telling you more about Allen, his wife Becky and the rest of the family in the next edition of our newsletter. Allen will work out of his home in Charlotte and will serve

in the western area of the state as the Western Area Manager for development. For NC Baptist Financial Services, our church loan ministry, he will assist Managing Director Russell Jones, throughout the state.

While we say hello to Allen, we will need to say a tearful goodbye to Carol Starling, the Foundation’s A d m i n i s t r a t i v e Assistant for Development for the last ten years. While her duties involve her in many areas of Foundation ministry, Carol has been my right hand person assisting in preparing our many planned giving documents, and in the detailed planning of our Noel Inspirational Retreat, the NC Baptist Development Officers Conference, and our Baptist Heritage Event. One of our annual objectives as Foundation development staff is to schedule opportunities when we can speak to groups of Baptist people. Most often these opportunities come in the form of local church gatherings (Sunday School, worship, Wednesday night, senior adult events, or special occasions like a Sunday

afternoon event) and associational events. More and more, we are finding churches scheduling a seminar for adults during the Sunday School hour followed by a stewardship message in worship. The purpose is to continue our 96-year-old ministry of “financially undergirding Baptist churches, institutions and mission endeavors on a permanent basis.”

So we encourage NC Baptists to be good stewards of ALL God’s gifts, including assets they have accumulated across the years. These assets include retirement accounts, savings accounts, insurance policies, residences and other physical properties, and are customarily distributed at death through a Last Will and Testament and by beneficiary designation. What a blessing we all could be to ministry if we would direct a portion of our accumulated assets to our church and other ministries we have loved and supported throughout our lifetime.

At a recent event where the Foundation was invited to have a presence in an exhibit area, a good NC Baptist lay person said in passing, “I already have a Last Will and Testament and I’m leaving everything to my niece.” This person went on to say, “She’s going to be well off when I die.” It certainly seems that this niece is held in high regard and very likely should be remembered at the passing of her aunt, but how unfortunate that no apparent consideration had been given to leaving a portion of that estate to support her local church and other important ministries.

As Baptist stewards, we are missing a great opportunity to be a blessing long after we’re gone if we do not include the support of Kingdom work through our estate plan. I often say to Baptist congregations, “Just imagine where your church would be today financially if every member who died in the last 20 years had just left a tithe of their estate to support the ongoing ministry of your church.” Then I add, “Even better, why not leave that gift to an endowment you set up with the Baptist Foundation that will go on providing support for your church until the Lord returns.”

Don’t miss your opportunity to make your stewardship last forever. Invite your Foundation area manager to your church and into your home and allow us to show you ways to meet the needs of family and ministry through a Christian estate plan. It is a free service provided by the NC Baptist Foundation as an agency of the Baptist State Convention.

Since 2009, NC Baptist Financial Services has been making loans to Baptist churches for ministry expansion in the way of new sanctuaries, multi-purpose facilities and acquiring land. Over the past 7 years, we have made over 110 loans totaling $60 million. It has been a joy to partner with these churches and learn what

God is doing through their ministries. To know that these loans are funding projects that will enhance their Great Commission strategy is a real blessing.

These loans are made possible by the Baptist State Convention, NC Baptist churches, Baptist-affiliated o r g a n i z a t i o n s and members of Baptist churches who have invested in Certificates of Participation, our primary funding tool. It allows the investor to be a part of these expanding church ministries. It’s exciting to think about a church in western NC, for example, investing in our ministry through a Certificate of Participation, knowing those funds could be used to fund a ministry project in eastern NC. While these two churches may not know each other, they have a common bond

t h r o u g h NC Baptist F i n a n c i a l S e r v i c e s . Baptists are partnering

with other Baptists for Kingdom growth. Participants in Certificates of Participation earn a

competitive return on their investment and have various terms from which to choose. Something new for 2016 is our IRA! We offer Traditional and Roth IRA options administered by Goldstar Trust Services. Certificates of Participation are a great alternative for reserve funds such as building funds, mission accounts or operating reserve accounts. If you are interested in partnering with us by investing in Certificates of Participation, please contact us or visit us online at:

Every community has needs. I live in a wonderful community in southeastern NC, and you don’t have to live here long to recognize its beauty and its needs. While we have a wonderful community, social vices and injustices also co-habit our

community. We are like everyone else – a town with needs. Recently, I

learned about some of the needs in our communities. Every year in September, the F o u n d a t i o n is privileged to be able to award grants to Baptist

ministries and causes, many of which are seeking to meet the needs of their communities. One of the things I get to see is the applications that come from eastern NC. As I read these applications and visit applicants, I learn about needs and the initiatives helping to meet those needs. The Burnt Swamp Association is seeking to face head-on the problem of hunger among a group of college students at U NC-Pembroke. Also, I saw first-hand how a little house in Erwin had been transformed into a safe sanctuary for those needing counseling and much needed mental health resources through the CareNet ministry. Two of our associations

recognize the need to reach children and are providing block party trailers which allow local churches to reach out with a shared resource. One church is looking at their vast acreage along Hwy 17 and d r e a m i n g a b o u t transforming it into recreational space as a way to provide its residents the blessings of community and doing life together. There are needs everywhere and it is exciting to see God use His church to answer these needs.

I heard a preacher say, “With expanded vision, comes the need for expanded resources.” As the ministries mentioned above caught God’s vision of meeting the needs of their communities, there also came a need for resources. The grants that have been awarded this year

allow for “expanded resources.” Many of the endowments that provided the $128,000-plus grant money this year were established by folks who trusted that God would continue to call His church to meet needs. I am fascinated by the way needs, resources and God’s people collide with eternal synergy.

Consider this article your invitation to be a part of this collision. Maybe God has called your church to one of His dreams – be sure to apply next year if you meet the qualifications. Maybe you can help provide expanded resources for years to come. Either way, God is at work and we get to be a part.

My wife Kathryn and I recently visited the Lancaster, PA area. Frequently we go to the “Amish country” to see plays at the Sight & Sound Theater in Ronks, PA. This year’s new production is “Samson.” I always look forward to learning more about featured Biblical characters from these plays

and how the story of their lives points us to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Some of the parallels between the life of Samson and Jesus are: 1) his miraculous birth was foretold by an angel; 2) he was betrayed by someone he loved for a few pieces of silver; and 3) he was beaten and mocked and accomplished more in death than in life. Unlike Samson who died to bring judgment, Jesus died to take our judgment on Himself. Jesus conquered sin and defeated death. A feat that even the mighty Samson could not do.

As I considered the life of Samson, I was drawn to read his story in Judges 13 - 17. Samson is also mentioned in the “Hall of Fame” in the 11th chapter of Hebrews. Samson struggled mightily with his faith and the purpose that God had for his life. Hebrew 11:6 says that, “Without faith it is

impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.” Living to please God is a wise investment

- not only for the rewards in heaven but also for daily pleasures on earth. God is meant to be the center of our existence. As long as we keep Him at our center, we stay “on course.” When we live in a self-centered way, we can go “off course.”

At the NC Baptist Foundation, we believe that part of staying “on course” with God is following His stewardship commands. 1 John 2:15 & 17 says ... “15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 17The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.”

For ideas on how you can do “mighty” works with the resources that God has blessed you with, give us a call at the NC Baptist Foundation.

2017 Estate Planning Emphasis: “Above and Beyond”There is something almost magical about watching a hot

air balloon rise higher and higher in the perfectly blue sky, soaring so high it is soon out of sight. Where will this trip take the occupants, whose lives will they touch, what impact will their visit have? As Christians, we have the opportunity to soar far beyond our wildest dreams in impacting Kingdom work, not just for the immediate future, but for as long as our Lord tarries. We have the capacity to touch lives and impact our world far beyond our lifetimes by simply having a thoughtful estate plan in place.

Promoting the concept of Christian estate planning in our churches and associations brings positive results in several ways. First, individuals find a sense of satisfaction by remembering the Lord’s

work through their Last Will and Testament and other planning documents. Second, surviving family members can be better cared for when a plan is in place; it is the

loving thing to do. Third, the lives of people in our churches, communities, country

and around the world will be impacted by the Gospel as Christian ministries receive

on-going financial support far beyond our lifetimes.

The Baptist Foundation provides free promotional materials and speakers to help in this effort, and sample packets are mailed to

every church and association in late October. January is “Make Your Will” month in Baptist

life, so make sure your church gets 2017 off to a great start by leading your members to soar “Above and Beyond” in supporting in perpetuity

cherished ministries.

The NC Baptist Foundation administers three scholarship funds to assist students with their college education. All students applying for the Foundation’s

scholarships are required to be residents of NC for at least one

year prior to submitting an application. Also, it is important to note that all students are required to submit a FAFSA Electronic Student Aid Report (SAR) with their application.

Our committee specifically considers the applicant’s GPA, church and community activities, expected scholarships and financial need. The personal essay is also important in the decision making process. Approximately 300 applications were reviewed by the committee in 2016 and 121 scholarships were awarded.

Scholarship awards for the 2017-2018 school year will vary in amounts, though not to exceed $2,500. Students may only apply for one of the scholarships listed below. If more than one application is submitted, only the first submission will be reviewed and the others will be disregarded.

The Bullard Family Scholarship is for students accepted for full-time enrollment in an accredited college, university

or seminary who are preparing for full-time Christian ministry and are members, or whose parents are members, of churches affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina (BSCNC).

The Luther H. Butler Scholarship for NC Baptists is for full-time students attending one of the following Baptist schools: Campbell University, Chowan University, Gardner-Webb University, Mars Hill University, Meredith College or Wingate University. Students should also be members of a church affiliated with the BSCNC.

The Martha Watson Scholarship Fund provides assistance to full-time students attending any institution of higher learning. These include seminaries, Baptist and non-Baptist colleges and universities and technical schools. Students should also be members of a church affiliated with the BSCNC.

The scholarship applications will open up online on January 1. Applications must be submitted by the close of business (5 p.m.) on February 15. No exceptions will be made. Notifications regarding scholarship awards will be made on or before April 15 of each year.

If you or someone you know would be eligible for one of these scholarships, please go online at www.ncbaptistfoundation.org to read more details on the requirements and guidelines for each scholarship.
