About Lawrence Weston Lawrence Weston is a post war housing estate in north west Bristol between Henbury and Shirehampton. The estate was originally a hamlet until the 1950’s when it was transformed, absorbing its original features and that of the neighbouring hamlet Kingsweston. The estate is now widely also known as L-Dub. It is known locally for its vibrant facilities for young people, having two youth centres, a regional competition standard BMX track, a popular community farm and lots of groups and activities throughout the estate. If you’d like to know more, Judy Helme’s book In The Footsteps of Giants, gives a history of Lawrence Weston and is available from Ambition Lawrence Weston.

The Big Local

Lawrence Weston is one of 150 areas that’s been awarded £1 million from Big Local. Its an exciting opportunity for residents to make a massive and lasting positive difference to their communities. It’s about bringing together all the local talent, ambitions, skills and energy from individuals, groups and organisations who want to make their area an even better place to live. Some ways in which residents have spent this money to date include:

Debt advice sessions Modernisation of the

Baptist Church Funding for LW farm Set up a job club

Manage a local grant pot Saved the youth centre from

closure Held community events Funded the community shop

Ambition Lawrence Weston Ambition Lawrence Weston is a resident led and driven organisation striving to make Lawrence Weston a good place to live, work and play. We are here to support local residents and deliver a community plan The Way Forward 2018-2023 Our website gives you much more information on local services, what's on, community projects and how to get involved.

The Lawrence Weston Neighbourhood Planning Group Come along to discuss different issues in Lawrence Weston and have a voice about how you would like the area to be developed, including community buildings, new homes, private developments, green spaces and verges and anything else to do with the built environment and public realm. You can get in touch with the planning group by calling Mark on 0117 9235112 or come along to a meeting on the last Thursday of the month at Lawrence Weston Youth Centre at 7pm.

Astry Close Community- led Housing Ambition Lawrence Weston have set up a community-led housing project in order to help meet the needs of local residents and offer them a wider choice of housing than they currently have. Bristol City Council have offered them the option to purchase a cleared site at Astry Close and plans are underway to build approximately 40 homes by 2021. The scheme is for mainly 2 and 3 bedroom houses, built to a high design and environmental standards, and with a focus on encouraging social interaction and community engagement in the long term. There will be a mixture of affordable homes to rent and buy. Local residents

are at the core of the scheme and are fully involved in the Steering Group, design process and long term plans for management and maintenance. The project hopes to have planning permission secured by the summer of 2019 and to be on site by the end of that year.

Welcome to Lawrence Weston

“I was elected to run the council and represent the

whole city in 2016, but I have particularly special

memories of growing up in Lawrence Weston before my

family moved to Easton. I can remember playing in the

fields behind Blaise Castle estate and exploring the

estate, especially the lanes around my mums house.

Lawrence Weston is a strong community with a great

spirit which will make you welcome to this area. I want

the area to feel better connected and included in

Bristol’s success so that everyone has the opportunity to

fulfil their potential and flourish. We have been working

hard to make sure we’re supporting communities across

the city with various projects affecting Lawrence

Weston”.— Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol.

Welcome to Lawrence Weston

“As your local Member of

Parliament (MP), it’s my job to

be your voice in the House of

Commons in London. And it’s also

my job to champion the great work being done in Law-

rence Weston, which is part of the area I represent

(called Bristol North West). I am proud to be from Law-

rence Weston, which will always have a special place

in my heart. I was born at Southmead Hospital and

grew up in Lawrence Weston in the 1980s and 90’s.I

attended Avon Primary School (now Nova) and

Portway Community School (now Oasis). Many of my

family and friends still live in the area and I’m sure I’m

not the first to tell you that you’ve moved into a strong,

well organised community that you can be proud of.” —

Darren Jones MP, Bristol North West.
