Hello and Welcome
Year 6 Staff

Literacy
Literacy is taught both as discrete lessons and as part of our topic work, where we look to apply the discrete skills that have been taught.
Within Literacy lessons key skills are taught:
Grammar and punctuation
Handwriting and presentation
Composition
Speaking and listening
We teach reading and spelling as discrete lessons.
MathsMaths is taught as discrete lessons and applied in some topic based lessons.
Within maths key skills are taught:
Number, place value and roundingAddition, subtraction, multiplication and divisionPercentages, decimals and fractionsRatio and proportionAlgebraMeasuresGeometry: properties of shapesGeometry: position, direction, motionData
In year 6 we teach maths in two groups matched to the needs of the children.
Creative CurriculumSubjects are taught through ‘topics’ rather than individual subjects.
Our first topic is entitled ‘Positive Mental Attitude’
For this we will be looking at World War 1 and famous historical people who have achieved a ‘first’ e.g. first moon landing, first man to step foot on the North Pole
We will have a main focus on history and art for the autumn term but will also incorporate other aspects of the curriculum.
RE and Science will be taught as separate lessons but will link as much as possible to our topic.
Assessment
Children are assessed in reading, writing and maths each half term. The levels teachers give are based on what children do within lessons and on tests results.
By the end of Year 6 the national expectation is that children achieve a level 4B.
However, the children are given a prediction based on their year 2 results and it is this that we strive to reach.
We appreciate that all children have different needs and know that not all children will achieve this and some will exceed it.
All we ask is that children always try their best.
Assessment continued…
At the end of year 6 all children will sit a reading, maths and SPaG SATs test.
These are externally marked and levels are sent back to school.
This year will be the last year that levels are awarded.
The new national curriculum is moving away from levels as of 2016.
HomeworkWe will be setting 4 pieces of homework per week
Maths – this may be linked to work in class, revision of a key skill, a practical task or a problem solving activity (Given Monday to be back on Friday)
English – this will be a short task linked to the grammar skill being taught that week (Given Monday to be back on Friday)
Spellings – lists of words to learn for a dictation (Given on Monday for test following Monday)
Talk homework - a talk task to discuss what the children will be writing during their free write time (Given on a Wednesday in preparation for writing on Friday)
We do not envisage homework taking any longer than 1 hour which can be split over the week.
Homework continued…Each child will be given a homework book to complete their maths and English tasks. The same level of presentation and work that they produce in class will be expected in their homework books.
Children can always ask for help if they do not understand a task as long as it is not the day the work is due in.
Tasks for the week will be stuck in their book with instructions.
All tasks will be marked so that you can see how your child is doing.
We ask that you show how tasks are completed by indicating whether children have had support or worked independently. This will be explained further in the front of the homework book.
This year we are also offering a homework club on a Wednesday lunchtime.
Any child who does not hand homework in on time will be asked to complete
it at lunchtime.
We will be using the children’s homework diaries to correspond to parents and ask that you use it too, to send in any messages.
We will also stick spelling lists in here.
We also ask that parents / guardians sign these weekly.
We also use this to record reading both in and out of school. Reading for enjoyment at home should continue in year 6 and we still expect parents to sign to say that their child has done this.
Extra Support
Small Group Intervention
In class and out of class support
Trained TAs to give children intensive support during the afternoon
Targeted intervention to meet the needs of all children
Short/Long term

Children may be chosen for intervention to give them a boost, improve confidence, secure basic skills, because they have special needs or because they benefit from working within a small group.
ExtrasSwimming – year 6 will be swimming in the Autumn term. Swimming is part of the PE curriculum and all children are required to attend these sessions. They take place on a Monday morning at a cost of £2 per session. These do not commence until the September 15th and a letter containing all details will be sent out in the first week back.
Little Canada – all Year 5 children have received their initial letter and deposits were due by 11th July.
We aim to give our pupils a rich and varied learning experience and will aim to use as much of the local area to do this to keep trip costs to a minimum.
Expectations
In year 6 we have high expectations of all pupils
We will be adhering to school uniform guidelines rigidly
We will treat every child fairly
We will listen to every child and be supportive to all their needs
We will expect work to be completed with pride and presented neatly
We will expect year 6 children to lead by example and be ambassadors to the rest of the school
We will provide roles within school for the children to take responsibility for
Buddying
Each year 6 child has been paired with one of our new reception children as their buddy. They have written a letter to introduce themselves.
Each week we will spend around 30 minutes with buddies to work together on a variety of tasks
