What does Joburg mean to you.As big as the city is, more than ever before it’s more connected and accessible, with its streets so diverse and full of life. When people tell me there is nothing to do in Joburg, I used to sit there astounded at such comments but now I know that that’s my cue to start sharing my passion and open their minds up to the possibly of embracing all it has to offer.

What inspired you to start your own blog?My blog, WriteStyle, came to life out of me wanting to share my thoughts, using my words, in my style. What started as a hobby has turned into something that is now one of my identifying marks, and has presented me with more fantastic opportunities than I could have ever imagined.

Joburg style is…Whatever you want it to be. It’s where the hipsters meet the urbanites, where the foodies meet the sports fans, where the shopping enthusiasts meet the music lovers. Anything goes,

and you can make up the rules as you go along. Your favourite restaurant to chow down in Jozi?I’m a coffee shop fan. The chilled, laid back settings provide me with the perfect spot to catch up with friends or work. My favourites include The Whippet Coffee in Linden, Wolves in Illovo, Vovo Telo at 44 Stanley and Naked Coffee in Melrose Arch.

Where can we follow you on social media?

5:00 As I photographer I start my Saturday off by chasing light, literally. So I am up at 5 to get ready with a charged camera and gear to be out the house at 5:30 to catch one of Jozi’s beautiful sunrises

6:00 A short trip with my likeminded Instagrammer friends to a location we choose during the week, gets us there just before the sunrise to experience South Africa and capture the moments through our lenses.

9:00 It’s been a while since we have been up so it’s time for a pit stop and some good local coffee. When in town, we stop at Joburg’s finest and best java brewery, Father Coffee.

9:30 I’m hungry, so it’s only a matter of steps before we I head to Neighbourgoods Market to grab a delicious breakfast.

15:00 It’s time now to head out to either Melville or Greenside for drinks with friends. This is where I love spending my time, with my friends talking nonsense and catching up after the hectic week.

18:30 It’s time to catch up with some important people in my life, and what a better place to do it than the legendary 4th avenue Parkhurst. My favourite place to dine is a beautiful place called Coobs, an eclectic contemporary bistro that serves delicious food.

20:00 It’s off to Sandton City where after dinner a good movie with my friends can be seen. It will either be a blockbuster Marvel or DC movie we have been waiting for, or a random group decision based on the movie posters first impression.

22:30 The nights activities are not over, and like the majority of my friends, we like to maximize spending time together so it’s off to the nearest restaurant open to have a laugh and some coffee, and talk about the day we just had. We usually only leave when the waitrons kick us out at closing time!

00:00 Bed time, after a very soul satisfying day of picture taking and friend time.

With local and international awards streaming in, chef Luke Dale-Roberts of The

Test Kitchen fame is now on his way to Joburg.

British-born chef Luke Dale-Roberts has worked across the globe… but he chose South Africa as his home. After completing his culinary studies in England and Switzerland, he travelled to the Far East for five years. His experiences in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and the Philippines instilled a love of Asian flavours that can be seen in his dishes today.

Heading to Cape Town with his South African wife in 2006, Dale-Roberts joined the team at La Colombe in Constantia, where he raked in a string of awards for the restaurant. But it was in November 2010, when Dale-Roberts opened The Test Kitchen in Cape Town’s gritty Woodstock, that South African culinary history started being made.

It is at this venue in The Old Biscuit Mill, a trendy spot on the outskirts of central Cape Town, that Dale-Roberts has made his mark. Constant culinary innovation is the benchmark here, and dishes are created by Dale-Roberts and his team constantly pushing the boundaries of flavour, technique and presentation. The multi-course gourmand dinner menu takes diners on a global tour, with a strong nod to the restaurant’s South African setting too. Bespoke crockery, soft furnishings by Dale-Roberts’s designer wife,

Sandalene, and art installations by Mark Rautenbach create the perfect platform to showcase the gastronomic mastery created in the open kitchen.

The acccolades and awards that The Test Kitchen has won since its opening are remarkable. This year, it was awarded no.28 spot in the World’s Best Restaurant Awards as well as named winner of its Continental Restaurant Awards: Best Restaurant in Africa. The Test Kitchen placed 44th in the Elite Traveler Top 100 Restaurants 2015, ranked number 22 in TripAdvisor’s 2015 Traveller’s Choice Awards on the list of its 25 Best Fine Dining Restaurants. On home ground, The Test Kitchen won the coveted Restaurant of the Year Award for the fourth year running in the 2015 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards. Dale-Roberts remains steadfast in his approach. “We have been working hard at The Test Kitchen over the past year, experimenting with new techniques, focussing on getting everything perfect while still keeping our playful edge,” he says.

The Test Kitchen is not the only venue where foodies can indulge in food created by Dale-Roberts and his team. On top of the Silo Building at The Old Biscuit Mill is The Pot Luck Club, a hip spot that oozes style and serves up tapas-style fare in stellar surrounds. City and harbour views are not the only talking point at this venue, which was voted number 9 in the Top 10 2015 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards.

Most recently, Dale-Roberts has opened Naturalis, also located at The Old Biscuit Mill,

which he calls his “incubation hub”. This space, which is constructed from upcycled containers and fitted with a development kitchen, is where the chef will experiment with curing, fermenting and drying. A roof garden will complete the picture. Diners can sample the results of the week’s culinary play with exclusive dinners around an oak table.

Exciting news for Joburgers is that Dale-Roberts will open a pop-up restaurant at The Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa in January 2016. Dale-Roberts is understandably thrilled by this new pop-up project, he says: “I’m excited to venture into the Joburg market and see how diners there react to The Test Kitchen style of food.”

‘Luke Dale-Roberts at the Saxon’ opens on January 21st and will run until end March ’16. Avail-able for dinner only from a Tues-day through to Saturdays. Expect a 7-course Tasting Menu offered with or without wine pairing. There is also an innova-tive Tea pairing option. H

PASTA CAFE,

Since the first Remo’s opened its doors in Mount Edgecombe, KwaZulu-Natal in 2007, this much-loved family-owned

eatery has grown in leaps and bounds – not only in size, but in reputation, too. The Remo’s brand captures the pure essence of what it means to live and eat Italian and has become renowned for its décor, ambience, outstanding service and authentic Italian menu. Simply put, Remo’s has become a must on every avid foodie’s itinerary.

Born out of a relentless love and passion for good food and great experiences, and with three thriving establishments in Umhlanga, Mt Edgecombe and Waterfall Estate, Remo’s Libertà will proudly open its doors in the newly revamped Nelson Mandela Square, making it even easier to get a slice of Italy and a taste of the Remo’s lifestyle. H

If homemade style cooking, organic, fresh, free-range and authentic gastronomy

is music to your ears, then we have good news. Now don’t judge a book by its cover, tucked inside the Appleton’s Village in Randburg, lies this gem of a restaurant. It appears as a casual takeaway spot but don’t be fooled Hello Joburgers, just like the food, this restaurant packs one helluva punch. Pasta Café offers a fresh and exciting twist to the fast food experience.Imagine being enveloped by aromas of fried garlic, chopped chilly and fresh herbs, (hand picked in front of your eyes). AND… queue the tingling taste buds. What we love most about this restaurant is the chef ’s obsession with only the finest, garden-fresh ingredients. The food is gingerly prepared and created and with exquisite touches like pistachio nuts and wild mushrooms, you’ll feel

spoiled. Even the gluten-free pasta, which they have perfected over a yearlong process and was well worth the wait, is delicious!

To begin your Italian adventure and perfect your dish, you have the opportunity to select any pasta type of your liking (all homemade and there is also a gluten-free/egg-free option), pick your veggies and herbs and finally your protein. Not forgetting to add your choice of cheese. We love the fact that its all in your hands, its your own culinary creation. Walla.

Inspired by bold flavors, interesting textures and cleverly combining passion and fine finesse, the dishes are generous and full of flavor. Each dish leaves you with a captivating satisfaction!

This restaurant is sure to meet the highest expectations. Joburgers it only makes sense to visit this charming spot. Bon Appetit. H

The tasteful transformation of one of South Africa’s iconic Centre’s is evident as Nelson Mandela Square now boasts cross vaulted ceilings, double volume glass facades, skylights, marble floors and numerous other luxurious finishes. An investment of just over R300 million has seen the Centre being entirely renovated in line with international style and standards. Brand new fashion brands are now available to shoppers and include Luminance, Thomas Pink, La Martina and Forever 21, which have seen the fashion-forward flocking to try on the trends since their opening. In addition, Hamley’s – the world renowned, heritage rich toy store, will now call the new Nelson Mandela Square home. H

VIP guests enjoyed a lavish three course “platter to table” dinner under the stars. The decadent platters provided guests with an opportunity to discover a sneak taste of the Square’s restaurants as each was prepared and provided by some of the Centre’s key restaurant tenants; Butcher Shop & Grill, Hard Rock Café, Pappas, Wangthai, Tasha’s Café and Remo’s showcased their signature dishes while guests were serenaded by local musicians.

TUMI Spring/Summer 2016 Men’s Collection

Multi-functional Magic! After the excesses of the festive season, with too much shopping and overindulging, it’s time to put your wardrobe on a diet. From a global perspective, people are shopping less due to the recession; this has impacted shopping trends worldwide. Thus, it’s important to find those items that can be used in a variety of ways and be worn over and over (and over) again without people thinking you have a limited wardrobe. The #TrendMen are experts on getting maximum use out of a minimal number of items and styling them in varied ways. 2016 is all about cleaning out our closets and replacing the superfluous with items that are truly multi-functional and adaptive. Here are some ideas…

The Spring/Summer 2016 Men’s Collection represents an entirely new level of sophistication in engineering

and structural design. A clean, contemporary aesthetic and refined detailing set the standard for the Global Citizen’s premium travel experience.

The Arrivé collection, re-designed for Spring/Summer 2016, exemplifies TUMI’s spirit of innovation—revitalizing silhouettes and increasing functionality. All styles feature the highly durable HTLS Polyester® and include elevated leather trim and chrome hardware detailing, plus TUMI ID LockTM for added security against identity theft. Additionally, the Add-A-Bag strap will allow all brief and backpack styles to be easily and securely stacked on top of wheeled travel pieces. The Hamilton Slim Brief, offered in classic Black and new addition Pewter, features an abundance of pockets for a laptop and tablet with extra space for documents and files. With polished chrome retractable handles, the user can access the bag without interference or carry the brief as a portfolio. Detachable shoulder straps also allow the user the versatility to wear the Hamilton over one shoulder. Chrome die-cut telescoping handles optimize strength without added excess weight on the Julius International Expandable 4-Wheel Carry-On and Rockford Wheeled Duffel. H
