Kosair Shriners Building Dedication Address

Nobles & Guests,

Thank you all for attending this historic occasion during which we will dedicate the new Kosair Shriners headquarters. Before dedicating our new facility, I will

briefly recount some of our history which has brought us to this place.

On November 3, 1884, Grand Potentate Walter Fleming issued a dispensation to Charles H. Fisk of Covington, Kentucky, a member of Syrian Temple in Cincinnati, to organize Kosair Temple. KOSAIR KOLUMS DEADLINE

IS SUNDAY,

NOVEMBER 30, 2014

FOR THE JANUARY ISSUEDeadlines are subject to change. Notices will be sent as early as

possible.

Golf ClubBy C.L. Lane

A quote from Billy Graham: “The only time my prayers are never answered is playing golf.” Well, our season is over without any major accidents on the courses. No reports of broken windows or damage to personal property. We could improve on attendance to our meetings and participation in our overnight outings. However, the club has had a great season of golf. The weather has been tolerable with enough rain to keep the grass green and favorable.

Our thanks to Noble Jack Nevin for his leadership as President and to all the committeemen and officers who served during the year. A special thanks to Noble Howard Goldberg for his marvelous job as handicapper.

League Winners are: Gold Flight- Paul Layman and Jim Solley, first place; Bill Jenks and Rodger McAllister, second place; third place, Jeff Butcher and Matt Rogers. Green Flight winners are: Wayne Linville and Tom Cissell, first place; second place Don Kissling and C.L. Lane; third place Tom O’Bryan and Rick Talbott. Red Flight winners are: Edwin Burke and Willie Delph; second place Dan West and Rich Weiss; third place Ernie Sanders and Mike Pawul.

Elected Officers for 2015 are: President - Richard Weiss; Vice President - Paul Pfeiffer; Secretary - C.L. Lane; Treasurer - Don Kissling. We are excited about the new format of play for the 2015 season. We will be playing The Crossings Golf Course on the second Monday of each month from May through September and playing Long Run Golf Course the fourth Monday of each month from May through September. We will have a shotgun start at both courses starting at 9:00am. So mark your calendars now and reserve these dates for league play. This new format will provide a better opportunity for fellowship and allow the same conditions for play for each team.

We are anxiously looking forward to a new season of golf and moving into our new Shrine Center on Bardstown Road. We hope that a new location will bring new enthusiasm to our Temple and fraternity.

The Gospel according to St. Titleist “ The more you practice the luckier you get.”

Oriental BandBy, Chuck Strothman

My thanks to the person who supplied the pictures for the last article. I haven’t learned yet how to send pictures; previous attempts sent pictures to digital limbo. Maybe someday I’ll get it right. I hope all Bandsmen get out to the Kosair Stated Meeting on Dec. 12. We will be electing our 2015 Elective Kosair Divan on that evening. These will be the men who will be leading us through our first year at our new home in Buechel. Please attend the meeting and exercise your right to vote. At our November 3rd business meeting, the Bandsmen present elected our Officers for 2015: Estill Jackson--President, Gil Puckett--1st VP, Al Dixon--2nd VP, and Joe Graves--Sec/Treas. These officers will be symbolically installed at our Christmas party Dec.5, awaiting their official installation by our new 2015 Potentate.

The Oriental Band has 2 new members; Pat Roseberry comes from Sunset Lodge, and Dave Brooks hails from Shawnee Lodge. Be sure to introduce yourselves to these men and welcome them to the Band.

Bandsmen and Ladies, there are a lot of plans and

an ancient seaport on the African coast of the Red Sea and it was selected because of our situation on the Ohio River. Since the time our charter, the name “Kosair” has become well recognized in our community and represents different things to many people.

•“Kosair” is: The men in sparkly red hats who bring smiles to the faces of our neighbors and children as we participate in community parades.•“Kosair” is: The organization that has brought high quality Circus entertainment to Louisville for 90 years, pleasing “children of all ages.”•“Kosair” is: The organization whose clowns bring joy and laughter to thousands of children, many of whom are suffering.•“Kosair” is: The organization that contributes millions of dollars to local children’s charities and agencies each year.•“Kosair” is: THE greatest advocate of children in our community.•“Kosair” is: A helping hand.•“Kosair” is: Healing to thousands of families.

We covet this name “Kosair” as it is has been associated with goodness in our community for 130 years. From this new location, Kosair will continue to build on our traditions, honor our fraternal heritage and be a blessing to this great city.

As we gather today, let us not forget those Nobles who paved the way and laid the foundation upon which we continue to build. Their memories we hold sacred in our hearts as we continue to fulfill the mission of the Shrine.

Join me now in dedicating this building…

In the name of and by the authority of Shriners International, I hereby dedicate this building to the purposes of Kosair Shriners and pray the Great Architect’s blessing on all who enter its portals. With “Strength and Fury” may it become a house where fraternal brotherhood flourishes and God’s designs will be served above our own.

Funsters

How is everything going on out there in Shriner land ? I hope all is well and just a friendly reminder that Thanksgiving is right around the corner and us Funsters would like to wish all our fellow Shriners and their families a Happy Thanksgiving.

Remember, don’t stuff yourselves with too much food because there’s another holiday coming up soon so, you need to save some room for those treats.

I really don’t know where to start, we have been in all directions entertaining people of all ages. I guess we could start at the Harvest Homecoming Parade. If you got there early, you could have had a real good breakfast that the Director Staff had served up. It was all good and delicious. Thank you guys for the good breakfast. Then we visited the children at the zoo for Kosair Charities at the zoo. It rained but it didn’t stop the children from coming out in their costumes and walking through the zoo for candy and looking at all of the animals and getting their pictures taken with the clowns and the characters throughout the zoo.

Our next stop was serving deserts with the King of Rock and Roll. Yes! The King was in the building that night. Had a good turnout of Funsters and other fellow Shriners. We all had a great time. And then our next stop was, Glendale Kentucky for the parade. Of what I heard there was a nice turn out. We also had a hospital visit by a couple of Funsters to entertain the kids and I’m sure

they enjoyed that because they always do.

There was the Ceremonial at Ham Days which several went through. I spoke with a new Noble the other night and he said he might be interested in becoming a Funster, I informed him when, where and time we meet. I hope he shows up.

For you new Nobles, we meet in the basement of the Temple following the Unit Directors Meeting. We start as close to 7:30 PM as possible. If by some chance, that you feel like you don’t know how to apply the make-up or dress out, there are enough Funsters to assist you in applying and dress out. If any of you just want to come down and see what we are all about feel free to. It doesn’t cost anything to come down to see what we are all about.

By the way, to you new Nobles, Congratulations on joining one of the oldest fraternities in the world.

Well! We hope to see you around the Temple at the old one or at the new one. It’s time for this Funster to go and do something productive.

Have a great day. Dennis (GABBY) HardinKEEPEMLAUGHING

Street MachinesBy, Edd Fisher

Well, the year 2014 has come to the end of her run. Wow what a year it has been. The Street Machines members are looking forward to another busy year in 2015.

The new Kosair building has been dedicated. It was a very major event in the calendar of events for 2014. The new Temple will be occupied soon and we all will be on one floor. The ease of access is going to be great for everyone.

I know that change is difficult, but sometimes rewarding. We will need to get acquainted with our new surroundings. The new Ball Room and the new meeting rooms will finish out great. Many tanks

to the Potentate and the building committee members for keeping it on track.

The Street Machines members are looking for Spring. We have our annual car show scheduled for April 19, 2015 to be held at the Bullitt County Shrine Club located just outside Shepherdsville, Ky. off of Highway 44 east. We have had great participation from clubs, units and Nobles everywhere. I hope to see you there.

The Kosair Street Machines meet on the fourth Monday of each month (except for December because of the Holidays) at Kosair just after the Unit Directors meeting.

The Street Machines club is open to any Noble that has a street legal vehicle that is insured. If you wish to participate in the Kosair parades and functions and you have a car with 4 wheels and wish to bring along family members with you, we are your club. Your car or truck does not have to be a candidate for “Best of Show”. Any ride is worthy. You will not get a better feeling when you are moving down the lane and people on the sidelines are applauding and thanking you for what we do. Most of them are truly thankful for the Shrine and for what it stands.

Ceremonial Director’s StaffJon S. Dawson, Secretary

Well, we started November with the Building Dedication of our NEW Temple (11/1/2014) and wrapped up November with The Shockers Ball (11/29/14) where everyone had a Great Time!

Our Roadblock team finished their year in November and did us proud once again – Thanks go out Nobles David Ruff and Mike Bryan for chairing the committees and to everyone who helped on the roads or on the Buck-a-Line and/or sold an ad or banner. You guys are the BEST – THANKS to all for supporting YOUR Kosair Shrine Circus.

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving holiday and is getting in the Christmas spirit. According to the retailers you should have started your Christmas shopping back in July. I figure mine will start and end on, or about, December 24.

Mark your calendars for the December Stated Meeting (12/12/2014). This will include the election of officers for 2015. The slate will include Temple Officers, Representatives to the Imperial Council, Representatives to the South-eastern Shrine Association, Representatives to the South Atlantic Shrine Association, Elective Finance Committee, Elective Board of Trustees, and One Member to the Planning committee will be elected. Any other Temple business that properly comes before the Temple may be acted

upon. A 2014 dues card is necessary for admittance. The Recorder’s Office will be open to receive dues. A Fez is required for admittance. Dress appropriately.

Nobles, as the year comes to a close let’s think about the new Nobles created in 2014 as well as the Nobles we have not seen around the Temple or at our events for a while. Are we doing everything we can to make them and their families feel welcome? A smile and a handshake to a new Noble or a call to a Noble we have not seen for a while might be all it takes. Our future depends on our members, are you up to the challenge? Smile, stretch out you hand or make the call. Let’s make Kosair Shrine the best Temple around.

With that in mind, here is an invitation to any of our Nobles, if you want to get more involved, we invite you to attend a Director’s Staff meeting. We meet the first Thursday each month, unless there is a conflict such as the Shrine Circus, Pegasus Parade or a holiday. Our meetings start at 7:30 PM with social time before and after the meeting. Our next meeting will be on December 4, 2014, we hope to see you there.

Transportation UnitRoger Hines, Transportation Unit Secretary

Last September the Transportation Unit acquired a new patient from the Jefferson County area who is a patient with the Shrine Cincinnati Burn Hospital. This child was born with a cleft lip/ cleft palate condition. This use to be called hare lip but this term is now considered to be offensive. Not that many years ago this defect was treatable but left the patient with highly visible scars. With today’s surgical techniques it can be repaired so that scars are barely visible and doctors at the CSBH have the ability to do this.

Me, being the curious type, used Goggle and found some interesting facts via Wikipedia on the above: This conditions affects about 1 out of 700 new born. It is not only genetic but can be caused by the mother smoking, or using alcohol or using ill-legal drugs. It causes other problems, such as feeding, ear, speech and socialization. It can be surgically corrected, especially so if surgery is performed soon after birth or early childhood. And some notable people who were born with this condition include Tad Lincoln(son of President Lincoln), old west gunfighter and gambler “Doc” Holliday and actor Cheech Marin.

When I was a student at Louisville’s J. B. Atkinson elementary school we had several classmates who were born with this problem. Being in a lower income neighborhood and not having an organization, such as the Shrine to provide help as needed, I have often wondered what additional problems they encountered as they grew older.

As to the numbers on the trips we had between September 16th and October 20th, 2014; we had 14 trips and drove 4399 miles for an average trip length of 314 miles.

And finally; Question: If a cat spits at you, what do you do?

Answer: Turn the grill down.

Until next month: Roger Hines, Secretary, Transportation Unit

Ladies Oriental ClubBy, Carol Grant

The Ladies Oriental Club November was a dinner meeting and a time to be “Thankful for our many Blessings”, that we have in our everyday lives, everyone went around the room saying what they had to be thankful for and most of all it reminded us to develop an attitude of gratitude as a way of life. The Style Show is history, it was well attended and made about $1,500. Seng Jewelry was given away and the nominating committee gave us a slate of officers to vote on, in December. Officers and jewelry winner will be announced in the January Kolumns.

December meeting will be Bruce Lott from the Masonic Homes of Kentucky, he will pick up the Ways and Means check, as well as the jewelry we have collected, for the ladies of the home.

Again, a reminder that our Christmas Party will be held on Tuesday, December 9th, with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. and entertainment to follow. Monday, December 1st is the last day to make reservations. This will be a fun and festive evening for everyone. If you so choose,

you may bring a $15.00 gift to exchange. If you have questions call Sandy Weiss.

Remember: Christmas waves its magic wand and everything is softer and more beautiful. Don’t put this spirit away, when you put the decorations away – keep it all year long!!
