Chapter 3: The Spirit of Tatsuo Shimabuku. “One Heart One Way”

3.1 Brief History of Isshin Ryu KarateTatsuo Shimabuku was born on September 19th, 1908, in Chun Village, Okinawa. At the age of eight, he began training with his uncle in Shuri-Te. He later studied under Kyan Chotoku, a Shorin-Ryu master. (Appendix a) Shimabuku adapted the following katas from Kyan and used them in the Isshin-Ryu style. (Seisan, Naihanchi, Wansu, Chinto, Kusnaku, and Tokumine No Kun (Bo#1)) The second grandmaster that he studied under was Miyagi Chojun a grand master in the art of Goju-Ryu. (Appendix a) Shimabuku learned from Miyagi the following katas (Seiuchin, and Sanchin). The third Master that Tatsuo studied under was Motobu Choki a master of the makiwara and kumite. (Appendix a) Tatsuo learned from Motobu’s Naihnchi kata, fighting techniques and how to properly train with the makiwara. In order to preserve their memories forever Tatsuo designed his emblem with three stars each star representing his early masters.

Figure one. (Tatsuo Shimabuku) In addition to the great masters listed above Tatsuo also trained under Master Shinken Taira. (Appendix a) He learned the following weapons kata from Shinken: (Chantanyara No Sai, Urashi Bo (Bo #2), Shishi NoKun (Bo#3), Mi Yoshi bo, Tsu Yoi Bo, Hamahiga No Tuifa (tonfa) Takusan no Ki (nunchaku), Kiken No Ki (nunchaku), and a kama kata. Shimabuku later incorporated additional kata into his style: Sunsu, and Kusanku Sai. Sunsu Kata was a combination of the other seven Isshin-Ryu empty hand kata as well as many of Master Shimabuku’s favorite fighting techniques.

On January 15, 1956, Tatsuo Shimabuku officially announced the formation of a new style of karate, Isshin-Ryu, meaning “One-Heart-Method” / “One Heart Way”. He chose this name because, according to Shimabuku, “all things begin with one.”

Beginning in 1955, Shimabuku began to instruct a number of U.S. Marines in his front yard in Kyan Village. In February 1956, Don Nagle became the first American of note to train with Master Shimabuku at his original dojo. In 1957, Harold Long also began training with Master Shimabuku in Kyan Village. In 1958, the dojo was moved to Agena in order to be closer to the military bases and Master Shimabuku secured a contract with the US Special Services to teach Karate to the US Marines for $250 each month. In March 1958, Harold Mitchum began training at the Agena Dojo and he soon became Master Shimabuku’s number one American student. Other Americans of note who trained with Master Shimabuku while serving with the Marine

Corps in the early 1960’s include Aresenio J. Advincula, Don Bohan, Ed Johnson, Steve Armstrong, john Bartusevics, Ralph Bove, Tom Lewis, and Sherman Harrill.

On May 30, 1975, Master Tatsuo Shimabuku passed away at his home in Agena Okinawa, after suffering a stroke. His eldest son, Kichiro Shimabuku, inherited the reigns of Isshin-Ryu Karate, the rank of 10thDan, and title of Soke. After master Shimabuku’s death, Isshin-Ryu splintered with a number of associations and independent dojos. Steve Armstrong continued the operation of the American-Okinawan Karate Association (AOKA), along with Lou Lizitte and Willie Adams. In March 1977, Harold Mitchum, Ed Johnson, AJ Avincula, and Milledge Murphy formed the United Isshin-Ryu Karate Association (UIKA), and Don Nagle formed the United Isshin-Ryu Karate Federation (UIKF). In 1980, Harold Long created the Isshin-Ryu Hall of Fame, with Master Tatsuo Shimabuku as the first inductee and Harold Long as the First American inductee in 1981. Other notable inductees in the Hall of Fame include Stave Armstrong, Don Nagle, Harold Mitchum, Joel Buchholtz, Toby Cooling, Joel Chandler, and Ed McGrath. In 1989, Angi Uezu left the IWKA and formed the Okinawa Isshin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo Association (OIKKA). He soon became one of the chief proponents of Isshin-Ryu karate on Okinawa.

3.2 Isshin Ryu Insignia

The Insignia of the Isshin-Ryu style of karate (figure 2) composed of various mythological and spiritual icons. The primary display of the emblem is the Image of the water goddess Magami. (Magami- the water goddess; half female, half dragon. The female represents a quiet character while the dragon represents strength.) The water in the emblem represents that both calm and violence exist in the world. The three stars represent the three primary teachers (Sensei Motobu, Sensei Miyagi, and Sensei Kiyan) that Tatsuo Shimabuku studied under before founding Isshin-Ryu Karate. The stars with

the gray background are indicators the calm and quietness of night as a metaphor that karate is to be used as a defense only. Magami’s left hand is open and symbolizes the search for peace. While the right hand shows) strength exists. Finally, the orange border may represent flames form the attacking dragon.

Chapter 4: Isshin RYU Kata

4.1 Kata Origins Black Diamond Karate teaches two basic forms called Penan I and Penan II. These forms are used to help beginners learn body awareness, and move while transitioning from stance to stance using kicking, blocking and striking techniques based on our upper body basics.

The eight formal empty hand katas that are taught in the Isshin-Ryu style are a collection of katas that Master Shimabuku brought together to focus on breathing, stances, and the realization of hard and soft techniques.

Table 1(Kata Origin) describes origin and developer of the forms / kata in question.

8 Empty Hand Descriptions

1) Seisan: Emphasizes the seisan stance (heel to toe), equal weight distribution, and straight forward fighting technique. Fighting multiple attackers in four directions. It is a repetitive kata, practicing moves in groups of three

2) Seiuchen: Emphasizes a strong stance, contains reinforced blocks and punches, and introduces some advanced breathing. Seiuchen is performed as an isometric kata for strength. Fighting multiple attackers on the letter “Y”

3) Naihanchi: Is known for its Iron stance and fake kicks. Designed for fighting side to side as if backed to a wall, and for close-in fighting. Also instructs against angle and frontal assaults.

4) Wansu: Contains general fighting techniques and a throwing technique. Wansu stresses blocking followed by an immediate counter

5) Chinto: Is over 500 years old and was created by master Chinto. One legend tells of chinto, the hermit from China, who lived in a cave on the coast of Okinawa. Because he kept to himself, the nearby villagers became fearful of him. They asked a karate expert to get rid of Chinto. The karate expert challenged him and used his best techniques, to no avail. Chinto never countered the attacks of the expert, but used pivoting and evading techniques to keep the attacks at bay. Chinto won the respect of the karate expert and they later became friends. The expert asked to learn the techniques that Chinto used, and would study every morning what Chinto taught. This was the origin of Chinto kata. This kata emphasizes advanced pivoting form and narrow angle fighting.

6) Kusanku: Is named after the Master who brought “te” from China and assisted in developing “Te” in Okinawa. The kata contains parts, which were designed for fighting in the dark. It literally translates as “major shy observation form”. Many Japanese styles have similar kata called “Kan Ku Dai”. Kusanku stresses fighting in many directions.

7) Suansu: Created by Master Shimabuku this kata contains the essence of both hard and strong, having a mixture of strong stance techniques and quick, fast movements. It is reflective of blending of Shorin-Ryu and Gojo-Ryu.

8) Sanchin: Emphasizes the correct use of eyes, breathing and posture. Proceeding form Sanchin daci, in which the toes and knees are bent inward, the practitioner’s eyes never leave the opponent. Breathing is slow and natural as if “smelling the air”. Inhalation follows a rising body action as well as the withdrawing of arms or legs, exhalation follow lowering actions of the body, as well as extensions of the arms or legs. Sanchin teaches the trainee to develop a “soft-hard” type of movement to develop maximum speed and power. The body acts as a whole, unified by concentrated efforts. The Sanchin step is circular, giving protection to the groin when closing with an n opponent.

Chapter 6: Isshin RYU Ranks and terminologyBlack Diamond Karate uses the following rank structure. This rank holds true for both Children and Adults. Black Diamond Karate does not offer a children’s ranking system. Both Adults and Children follow the same curriculum and develop the same skills. See the illustration below on the ranking systems.

Adults that train two or more days a week will be able to earn their black belts in 3-5 years. Children who train two or more days a week will generally be able to earn the black belts at roughly the same rate as adults providing they reach the age of 13 in their testing year for Black Belt.

One thing to note is that Black Diamond Karate does not promote Children under the age of 13 to Black Belt. Black Diamond Karate believes that part of being a Black Belt requires that the person also have the mental capacity to make right and wrong decisions.

Black Belt is the GOALBlack Belt is the start of your journey
