Each month we receive a list of people(s) applying for a new busi-ness license in the County, as I have
reached out to the various new business owner I have found several interesting items worth mentioning. 1. Th ey are always excited to talk about their new adventure or involvement that they have taken on. 2. Th ey are nervous about the “Th e big move”, but without a doubt the excitement outweighs the apprehension that they are feeling about this new stage in their lives. 3. Th ey are full of questions, all the way from who to go through when hiring new
employees, to who would I use if I were in the same situation to build.
With many of these very valid and note-worthy questions, I wanted to share with you an article that I read from Scott Gerber called “10 tips for the fi rst-time business owner”. I found this to be a very informa-tive and helpful article no matter what stage you are in with your business.
I write Entrepreneur.com’s Young Entre-preneur column because I believe there are far too few resources directly addressing the nonacademic trials and tribulations young entrepreneurs face along their jour-ney. Whenever possible, I encourage up-and-comers and established entrepreneurs to mentor the next generation of dream-
seekers; for it is this insight and insider education that will provide the foundation for the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. With that, here are 10 pieces of advice that I wish someone had given to me before I launched my fi rst venture.1. Focus. Focus. Focus.
Many fi rst-time entrepreneurs feel the need to jump at every “opportunity” they come across. Opportunities are oft en wolves in sheep’s clothing. Avoid getting side-tracked. Juggling multiple ventures will spread you thin and limit both your eff ectiveness and productivi-ty. Do one thing perfectly, not 10 things poorly. If you feel the need to jump onto

Founded by best friends and business partners Amy Millward and Cathy Maxfield, Wise Choice Real Estate
first opened their office in 2013. Back then they were known as ‘Who’s Your Agent? Real Estate’ or “you know the company with the purple owl.” They started the business on a wing and a prayer with only the two of them as agents. Now 2 years later they can boast 20 agents (and count-ing) and even a branch office in Grants-ville. They have officially changed their name to Wise Choice Real Estate and kept Who’s Your Agent? as their slogan’.
What makes them a Wise Choice when it comes to the real estate business? We could give you a lot of snappy lines and throw adjectives at you that would sound impressive, but really it’s all about heart. Cathy and Amy had a dream to build a better real estate company not another corporate cookie-cutter brokerage. They both sank their dreams and hearts into
the company and are now on their way to becoming one of the biggest local broker-ages in Tooele County.
Agents are flocking to make their nest with Amy and Cathy because they can see that Wise Choice is different. Training and marketing their agents, not just their company, is a top priority. This is a family, not just a business. When you nurture and encourage your family, you all grow stronger.
As a client with Wise Choice you won’t find a better brokerage to work with. The majority of the agents live and work in Tooele County. They know the area, they know the market and they know how to help you buy, sell or invest here. Of course they cover Salt Lake, Davis and Utah Counties as well, but Tooele County is their home.
So the only thing left to say is “Who’s Your Agent?”

Head Quarters Salon has been in Stansbury Park for almost 8 years, Brenda Hatch opened
the salon as an entrepreneurial effort to provide a need to the community. Late Last summer I had been working on a business plan for a salon, at the time it was ideas for some unknown date in the future, but as I worked on it, Head Quarters Salon kept coming to mind and I finally called Brendan to see if he had any interest in selling it to me. I thought it was a little crazy, but I had nothing to lose by inquiring. The fall came and Brendan and I had made arrangement and plans for the purchase, everything was ready except me. My mother was losing her battle with cancer and I knew I couldn’t take over the salon and spend the time with my mom. I knew asking Brendan to wait could result
in a loss of the whole deal, but I couldn’t do both. Brendan was gracious and said he would call in January to see how things were going. I was so grateful. The day after my mother’s passing I received a text from Brendan asking if I was ready, I heard my mother’s voice in my head saying “ you’ve wasted enough time now go and do it!”. My mother’s strength and beauty inspire me, and I hope to bring that energy in to the community, by providing a positive at-mosphere, friendly environment, and great service to our community. I love my job, I love helping people feel and look their best. The logo on our wall says “Be your own kind of Beautiful” I hope to encour-age and influence our community with this salon and great staff to do this. Thank you Tooele County and community. – Laura Kleinman

to play 18 holes. On the course, golfers were met at each hole by Tooele busi-nesses, and were able to network and learn more about beneficial opportuni-ties within Tooele County. Following play, golfers returned to the clubhouse for lunch sponsored by Stericycle and Mountain America Credit Union. Golf-ers also participated in a prize drawing for over 20 prizes including an iPad, and 60” HDTV, and XBOX One, two firearms, and many other wonderful donated prizes. Tournament winners for the day were: 1st Place team, Tooele City with Randy Sant, Kasey Dunlavy, Jim Bolser and Kyle Fielding. Following the tournament, Steve Laird’s name was drawn for a chance to tee off on Hole #9 and win One Million Dollars sponsored by Tooele Title Company. With wit-nesses in place, Laird took the shot from 165 yards, and narrowly missed, landing it on the green just short of the hole. The Chamber would like to thank all those who participated in making our golf tournament, the Chamber’s largest fun-draiser of the year, a huge success! We hope to see you on the course next year!

another project, that might mean something about your original concept.
2. Know what you do. Do what you know. Don’t start a business simply because it seems sexy or boasts large hypothetical profit margins and returns. Do what you love. Businesses built around your strengths and talents will have a greater chance of success. It’s not only important to create a profit-able business, it’s also important that you’re happy managing and growing it day in and day out. If your heart isn’t in it, you will not be successful.
3. Say it in 30 seconds or don’t say it at all. From a chance encounter with an investor to a curi-ous customer, always be ready to pitch your busi-ness. State your mission, service and goals in a clear and concise manner. Fit the pitch to the person. Less is always more.
4. Know what you know, what you don’t know and who knows what you don’t. No one knows everything, so don’t come off as a know-it-all. Surround yourself with advisors and mentors who will nurture you to become a better leader and businessman. Find successful, knowl-edgeable individuals with whom you share common interests and mutual business goals that see value in working with you for the long-term.
5. Act like a startup. Forget about fancy offices, fast cars and fat expense accounts. Your wallet is your company’s life-blood. Practice and perfect the art of being frugal. Watch every dollar and triple-check every expense. Main-tain a low overhead and manage your cash flow effectively.
6. Learn under fire. No business book or business plan can predict the future or fully prepare you to become a successful entrepreneur. There is no such thing as the perfect plan. There is no perfect road or one less traveled.
Never jump right into a new business without any thought or planning, but don’t spend months or years waiting to execute. You will become a well-rounded entrepreneur when tested under fire. The most important thing you can do is learn from your mistakes--and never make the same mistake twice.
7. No one will give you money. There, I said it. No one will invest in you. If you need large sums of capital to launch your venture, go back to the drawing board. Find a starting point instead of an end point. Scale down pricey plans and grandiose expenditures. Simplify the idea until it’s manageable as an early stage venture. Find ways to prove your business model on a shoestring budget. Demonstrate your worth before seeking investment. If your concept is successful, your chances of raising capital from investors will dramatically improve.
8. Be healthy. No, I’m not your mother. However, I promise that you will be much more productive when you take better care of yourself. Entrepreneurship is a life-style, not a 9-to-5 profession. Working to the point of exhaustion will burn you out and make you less productive. Don’t make excuses. Eat right, exercise and find time for yourself.
9. Don’t fall victim to your own B.S. Don’t talk the talk unless you can walk the walk. Impress with action not conversation. Endorse your business enthusiastically, yet tastefully. Avoid exaggerating truths and touting far reaching goals as certainties. In short, put up or shut up.
10. Know when to call it quits. Contrary to popular belief, a smart captain does not go down with the ship. Don’t go on a fool’s errand for the sake of ego. Know when it’s time to walk away. If your idea doesn’t pan out, reflect on what went wrong and the mistakes that were made. Assess what you would have done differently. Determine how you will utilize these hard-learned lessons to better yourself and your future entrepreneurial en-deavors. Failure is inevita-ble, but a true entrepreneur will prevail over adversity.

Willow Creek Lending has been helping people refinance, consolidate debt and apply for
mortgage loans since 2006. Todd opened his first office in Grants-
ville, and although he’s moved office loca-tions a couple of times in the past 9 years he always felt it was important to keep an office close to his roots. He just celebrated grand opening of his new office in Tooele and now divides his time between the two locations to accommodate his clients.
Willow Creek currently has five loan officers and they all work hard to help their clients find the best loan to fit their individual needs. They know how scary
applying for a mortgage can be and they will take the time to walk their clients through the whole process. Willow Creek also recently adopted ‘Cash’ the frog as their mascot. He helps with marketing and is an honorary loan officer.
Throughout the years Willow Creek has participated and donated in many chari-table events because Todd feels strongly about supporting his local community. That being said, Willow Creek Lending is one of the only locally owned and operat-ed mortgage lenders in Tooele County. So as Cash would say, “hop on over to Willow Creek Lending and let us help you finance your pad.” 435-228-6684
