Family Caregiver Month - November
With November being Family Caregiver Month, it is
important for us to recognize those who selflessly give of
themselves day after day, caring for their loved one. They are
often up way too early, go to bed late, and have little to no
time for themselves.
The staff at the Adult Day center recognizes the importance
of time away, whether to get things done, take a nap, or enjoy
fun hobbies that there is usually no time for. If you care for a
loved one and find yourself longing for any of these, the
Adult Day Center can help ease your burden! We provide
respite care for those with Dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease,
and other disabilities that includes fun activities, a wonderful
home cooked meal provided by volunteers, as well as
friendships that last a lifetime!
If you are interested in learning more on how the Adult Day
Center can help provide respite care for your loved one,
please contact Bonita Jackson, Program Director at the Hands

Recently we sent our end of year capital campaign letter. Hands of
Grace and the beneficiaries of services greatly appreciate the
generosity of so many community members, churches and
businesses. Thank you!
Hands of Grace has been buzzing with activity. Many prayers and
hard work allowed us to receive a grant from ODOT to purchase a
new Handicapped Accessible Van. Also, the Fulton County Health
Center has graciously offered to donate required matching funds for
the van. What an amazing gift!
We have also been blessed with new additions to the Hands of Grace
team. As you will read in this Grace Notes, Bea Kovacs has
volunteered to coordinate efforts for our volunteers. Caroline
Lammers has joined Bonita in the office and Michelle McGarrity has
joined Alicia at the ADC. We welcome all the new roles and faces!
As cold temperatures continue to enter the area, I wish you warm
homes and the comfort of friends and family. May the very busy
holiday season be filled with many joyous memories!

On November 5, the participants of the Adult
Day Center were able to enjoy a fun day trip to
the Spangler Candy Company, home of the
famous Dum Dum suckers. They enjoyed
walking through the museum and seeing how
the Dum Dum has changed through the years.

also saw where Circus Peanuts and Candy
Canes were made! It was definitely very
interesting and fun to see. They loved
sampling the suckers as well ☺
VOLUNTEER COORIDINATOR New Position filled for Hands of Grace
Recently the idea of developing a “Volunteer Coordinator” for Hands of Grace was presented to a longtime volunteer, Beatrice (Bea) Kovacs, and she accepted the challenge. Through Recruitment, Retention, and Recognition of Volunteers, Hands of Grace Faith in Action hopes to acknowledge how very important Volunteers are to this ministry of helping the elderly and/or disabled residents of Fulton County. Eleven years ago Hands of Grace Faith in Action became Bea’s choice of Volunteerism and since that time many service opportunities have enriched her life and confirmed her belief that “we all have something to offer others”, she says. “And that in giving, we receive much more than we give”. Bea’s first task will be to contact as many present volunteers as possible. During the contact she will be asking for updates to your information seeking your feedback and requesting any suggestions. It is always a pleasure to show appreciation to you, Volunteers, and to hear from you as well. Your message left at the office will be forwarded to her.

Volunteer Coordinator
The United Way of Fulton County has once again kicked off the
annual fundraising campaign. Funds raised will provide programs to
Fulton County residents by assisting 22 agencies (including Hands
of Grace). The United Way “Pack” to School Program provided
back packs, school supplies and hygiene kits to over 1,000 Fulton
County children to help them start school prepared for success!
United Way serves all of Fulton County. Donations are allocated to
programs and agencies within five focus areas: Education, Income,
Health, Essential Services, and Community Building. Our Board of
Directors, made up of local volunteers, determines which programs
are funded. Based upon donors' wishes, contributions may also be
designated to a local partner agency. Contributions can be sent
to: United Way of Fulton County, 604 S. Shoop Ave, Suite 122;
Wauseon, OH 43567. You can choose to give to the United Way as
a whole, or you can designate your gift to Hands of Grace.

It was a beautiful sunny Saturday morning, June 28th , when some 70 plus walkers and runners gathered together at Highway 109 to registered and participate in the North Star BlueScope Steel 5K Run . Runners and Walkers from all over the County, and of all
ages, came out to support 3 charitable organizations, Great Lakes
Collaborative for Autism, Wabash Cannonball Trail & Hands
of Grace Faith in Action all receiving a portion of the proceeds raised that day. Alzheimer’s Awareness Month
When we hear the words Alzheimer’s Disease we most often think of older folks being affected with it. But that is not always the case. Researchers are now finding that there are more and more younger adults who are being diagnosed with this disease to the tune of approximately 200,000 people in their 40s and 50s.
There are many myths, misconceptions and stereotypes about the disease largely due to the lack
of public awareness. The more one talks about their diagnosis (the effects, what they are experiencing) the more receptive the public will become and the research and support for finding a cure can be reached more quickly. The people diagnosed with this disease just need to come out and not be ashamed of their diagnosis.
When first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s many will question the diagnosis or even dismiss it altogether. Then some may even withdraw from society and become isolated. Many people with Alzheimer’s continue to do quite well on their own during the early stage of this disease.
As the disease progresses, however, those diagnosed are at risk of wandering, which can be very dangerous, due to increased confusion and agitation. This added pressure takes a toll on the family dynamics especially on those caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s 24/7. For this reason it is beneficial to all parties involved to seek support in some form of an outlet, whether it would be a support group, an Adult Day Care or having extended family intervene. Support is crucial to the caregiver’s own health.
The wife of one of Hands of Grace Adult Day Center’s participants was told this first hand by her doctor. She was told, “If you don’t get some help with your husband, you’ll be in the grave before he will!” He then encouraged her to contact Hands of Grace and check out their Adult Day Center. She took his advice, a little difficult at first because she then had to deal with her own feelings of guilt ~ not being able to take care of him on her own. In time, after coming to grips with her own feelings, and seeking help in caring for her husband, she took that 1st step ~ paying a visit along with her husband to our Adult Day Center. She decided to give it a try and at first her husband was not too happy but she stayed in the background and extended the time a little longer each day til he was there a full day and by then he began looking forward to coming.
Today, her husband asks, “Do I go to the ADC today?” He actually looks forward to coming and he is a delight to the staff, volunteers and the other participants. While he looks forward to Monday, Wednesday and Friday coming to the ADC, his wife also says, “I have my life back and we actually enjoy each other’s company more, now that I have a break.” She is now an advocate for Hands of Grace Adult Day Center to reach out to others who have contacted Hands of Grace for help. She knows first-hand
the range of emotions a loved one goes through and is able to encourage them to take their first step in getting A Break for Love’s Sake.
If you are caring for a loved one being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or know of someone who is in that situation, we encourage you/them to seek help in your/their journey of finding someone to help ease the burden and not going it alone. The Hands of Grace Adult Day Center is such a place to meet that need.
