LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

A little over three years ago, the former president of the Mammoth Hayden Softball League stepped down and Albert Mendibles took over the league. One of the first things Mendibles did was to take away the structure. There was no longer to be a structure for complaints or decision making. Mendibles spread very nasty and slanderous rumors about the leagues former president and told numerous people that money had gone missing to get more in donations. As a parent I stepped up and offered what help I could. I drafted and submitted many letters to different organizations asking for help. When all the rules had gone away the league was left with no order and many upset parents as rules changed from one day to the next. Many frustrated parents made the call to move their children to other towns in order for them to grow, learn, and succeed in their quest to conquer softball. Fast forward to January of this year. I was once again approached at a town council meeting by Mendibles and asked to coach a team. I advised him that with the current structure I would help out as I could but would not coach a team. Earlier this month Mendibles advised that he did not have enough girls to make a 10 and under team. That registrations had been extremely slow and did I have any ideas. I advised him my daughter was already registered and would be playing Little League, but that if he needed girls she had stated she would love to do both. The concern for me as a parent was that even though softball season usually doesn’t get fully underway until the middle of May, if she missed a softball practice for a little league game that she would be benched. I was advised by Mendibles that he didn’t foresee it to be a problem since it looked like he would be the one coaching, and if he got someone else he would explain the situation to the new coach and it wouldn’t be a problem. My daughter is a T.A.G. (talented and gifted) student and they meet on Thursdays. I let Mendibles know on Tuesday that my daughter would not be at practice on Thursday due to T.A.G. I received a call from him Thursday night. According to Mr. Mendibles the new coach of the 10 and under Mammoth Softball team was a “Junior Bejarano”, the coach for the Mammoth San Manuel Unified School District. I was also told that after speaking with this new coach, a decision had to be

Dissatisfaction with the Mammoth Softball Leaguemade. My daughter would not be allowed to play softball if she was playing in little league. I was extremely upset. My daughter had already been practicing with the team, had not missed any practices, and was looking forward to playing in both leagues. We of course made the choice of a well-run league and kept her in little league. I want to take a moment to clarify a few things, for those that may not know, in Mammoth we value our baseball/softball season. During the late spring and early summer months the areas surrounding the ball fields are filled with players, families

and citizens all to support our youth. If you took a trip to the softball field last year during softball season you didn’t have to fight to find a place to park. Even now during practices the street is extremely empty compared to what it once was. Parents have pulled their children and are sending them as far away as Tucson to play ball rather than subject them to the leadership under Mendibles. On April 16, 2015 the Pinal County Sheriff drove all the way to Mammoth and made another large donation to the league.

The funds are supposed to go to help teach our young girls the value of team work, the pride that can come from accomplishing something they set out to do and to help them develop a sense of belonging to something bigger (If the same language was used in this letter as in the letter that I wrote back in 2013). How does a San Manuel resident get to shoot that down for a 7-year-old who only agreed because others would not get the chance to play? Mr. Bejarano is NOT a resident of Mammoth. I was told that he “did not want to speak with me” and that was just how he coaches. Meanwhile his granddaughter who resides in San Manuel and has missed every practive this season will not be sitting out any games. In fact her and her mother who did not show up for practice on the 16th of April did make sure to make an appearance for the photo opportunity with the sheriff. Mendibles is not a resident of Mammoth. In fact he resides in Oracle and has for many years. Why is his daughter not playing for the league in Oracle? Is it because Mendibles is against following the rules of anyone else? After all, in 2013 in front of a packed stand he stated that all the coaches would be A.S.A certified for the 2014 season and yet there have been no changes. This discrimination is something truly evil and goes against everything the league was set up to accomplish. A child was hurt after trying to do some good, and all for what? The residents of Mammoth need to put a stop to this type of behavior. Mendibles needs to turn the league back over to a Mammoth resident or at the very least someone who is about all children, not his own child. If we don’t stop taking our children to other towns, there will be no more softball here. I want to spend a moment to sincerely thank Ralph Valencia and his team. When I was young there were hardly any girls in Little League and now there are just as many girls on the teams as boys. They have provided parents in Mammoth area with another option (and a very good one) for our girls. My daughter has learned more about good sportsmanship from Little League than she ever did in softball under Albert. So again THANK YOU Mammoth Little League. And to parents and local businesses, please let the Mammoth Softball League know that discrimination of a child is wrong and should not be tolerated. Thank you, /s/ Annie Martinez

Esmeralda was born on June 24,1945 in Tiger to Gilbert and Irene Valdez. The younger of two children, Esmeralda grew up with her sister Margaret in Tiger until its closing. The family then relocated to Mammoth, where she attended elementary school and, later, high school in San Manuel. Esmeralda was fiercely independent, had an infectious personality, and loved to make people laugh. After finishing high school, in her adventurous spirit, she moved to San Francisco where she married and started her family. In 1979, Esmeralda’s roaming eventually led her to settle and raise her children in Carson City, NV. There she worked for the State of Nevada Department of Taxation until 1992. She was lovingly remembered as “Ez, enjoyed cooking, painting classes, traveling to Hawaii and memorable summer trips to the family cabin in Bridgeport, CA. complex located at 411 East American Avenue, Suite 7 in Oracle. They reported an individual would come and go every day to the building, he would only stay for a short time period, the windows were painted black, the air conditioning was never on and the electric meter was running all the time. A deputy was sent to investigate and could immediately smell the strong odor of marijuana coming from

inside of the building. The Pinal County Sheriff’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force was called and then took over the investigation. Probable cause was developed by detectives that inside of the building was a hydroponic marijuana grow. A search warrant was obtained and at 8:30 p.m. detectives made entry into the building and discovered 60 mature marijuana plants, several industrial

grow lights, over 50 harvested marijuana plants and a high tech hydro system to grow plants. Detectives conducted surveillance at the business

and arrested Jarod Corley (age 46 of San Manuel). He was booked into the Pinal County Sheriff’s Jail for Possession of Marijuana, Possession

of Marijuana for Sale, Production of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. A search warrant was

The citizens of Oracle are very concerned about marijuana grow facilities popping up in their town and this Neighborhood Block Watch ensured Jarod Corley will not be growing marijuana ever again in their community.”

Alec Newman

Troop 822 takes great pride in announcing the Troop’s first Eagle Scout, Wm. Alec Newman. Alec has been active in scouting for 10 years, starting when he became a Bobcat Scout at age seven. He completed the Cub Scout program earning the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouts highest achievement in 2009.

Alec and his fellow scout Martin Parra attended Boy Scout summer camp just 3 weeks after crossing over from their Cub Scout Pack. Neither of the boys had been away from home for a week without their families until that summer camp. Alec and Martin both had a great time other than the basketry merit badge class, but more about that later.

San Manuel at that time did not have a community Boy Scout troop and it wasn’t until October of 2009 that Troop 822 was formed with the Knights of Columbus Council #5542 as the Troop’s chartered organization. Alec would like to thank Bill Romero for not giving up and working with his fellow Knights to help get the Troop formed. Many others have supported the Scouts in San Manuel over the years: Larry Ramirez, Liz Garcia, Michelle Gonzales-Castro, Kyle and Cindy Sweeney, Grant and Denise Fisher, Tom Miller, Jane Newman, Doug and Joanie Rivard, Alex Gort, John and Claire Eckert, Cheryl Hexum, John Ryan, Bill Romero, Steven Davis and many others. Without all of the public and private support, Alec would not now be the newest Eagle Scout in San Manuel.

Alec Newman achieves Eagle Scout rankIn addition to Boy Scouts, Alec is a varsity swimmer

for the San Manuel Miners swim team, a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the Sea Lions the local swim club for the summer league. Alec is planning on attending college once he graduates

from SMSUSD High School and pursuing a robotics engineering degree. He is also deeply interested in becoming a novelist and is currently working on a number of writing projects.

Alec is one of the founding members of Troop 822; on June 25, 2010 he achieved the scout ranks of Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class Scout and later that year in December he achieved the rank of Star Scout.

In February 2011 Alec was elected into Scouting Honor Society, the Order of the Arrow. In June of 2011 Alec completed the National Youth Leadership Training course and on July 19, 2011 he achieved the rank of Life Scout.

Alec was invited to join the NYLT staff in 2012, completing The Trainers EDGE course and all of the staff development training, however just before the 2012 course began Alec came down with pneumonia, being unable to staff the course, and he also became a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.

In July of 2013 Alec attended the National Scout Jamboree held for the first time at the new national Scout high adventure camp, The Summit. In November of 2013

After a one-run loss at sixth-ranked Superior on Apr. 17, the fourth-ranked Miners returned to form last week, winning consecutive home games against Globe and Benson. In the 10 – 7 win last Wednesday versus the Bobcats, sophomore Dionne Ruiz went

4-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Felicia Medina and Nikki Baldenegro each had two hits with every other hitter in the Miners’ lineup having one hit, including Mariah McBride, who had two RBI in the game. Junior Nicole Encinas pitched a complete game and earned the victory, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and six walks. She struck out two Benson hitters in what

was her second win of the season. The Miners closed out their regular season at third-ranked Ray on Tuesday. The back-to-back state champions will look for a three-peat beginning this weekend in the upcoming state tournament. Check the AIA website (www.azpreps365.com) for playoff matchups, times, and locations, which will be released later this week.

It was a terrific weekend for outdoor adventures! The St. Bartholomew Catholic Church held its annual Fiesta on Saturday. There were a great abundance of activities, games for the youth, dancing, musicians, horse-shoe tournaments and concessions. Music included the Cardells, Genaro Moreno, mariachis and a dance in the evening. The aroma of food that filled the air was delightful to the smell and taste. The Knights of Columbus had a

large presence at the fiesta and helped out tremendously. The fiesta falls in line with the social teachings of the Catholic Church which include a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of devotion along with the modern society challenges. The atmosphere at the fiesta was full of happiness, enjoyment and pure delight. It’s a wonderful feeling to see so many people join together for a fun-filled day and evening where there is something for everyone. The horseshoe tournaments

St. Bartholomew Church hosts annual Fiestawere well attended and the camaraderie between opponents was uplifting. There were people from all over the Tri-Community in attendance it was nice to see everyone come together. Be sure to

look for information on next year’s St. Bartholomew Church Fiesta to find out the date and events. Thank you for everyone that participated in making this another triumphant event!

The Central Arizona College (CAC) Aravaipa campus hosted another successful car show with food and fun for all to enjoy. The CAC Science Club sold Eegee’s and the San Manuel Rotary cooked hamburgers, hot dogs and several other items. There were several amazing vehicles to look at while listening to great music and visiting with several people out enjoying the day. Thank you to the sponsors for their support: Aaron Franco, State Farm, Michelle Castro, State Farm, La Casita Mexican Restaurant, Mammoth, Maria’s Mexican Restaurant, Hayden, Merle’s Automotive, Globe, Oracle Inn Steakhouse, RR Jake, Romo’s Mexican Restaurant and Salt and Pepper. The contributions from these sponsors help make events like these possible. Antiques, hot rods, motorcycles were all at the CAC Car Show for enjoyment.

Central Arizona College hosts 4th annual car showIt doesn’t matter what type of car you might be interested in there are many to choose from that will peak your interest. All the hard work and time that goes into the restored vehicles are just amazing! If you have any interest in learning about the cars there are many educational opportunities. Most of the vehicle owners are happy to talk about

their vehicles and explain what they have done and what they plan to continue to do. After speaking with some of the attendee’s they found it to be inspiring to work on their own vehicles. This can certainly be a great hobby and also a great investment if the owner decides to sell at some point. One of the motorcycle

owners that had a side cart even gave rides around the parking lot to different people who asked. It was certainly a fun atmosphere and enjoyable day for all in attendance. Thank you again for the sponsors and for Central Arizona College for allowing the Car Show to be held at their Aravaipa facility.

Aravaipa’s car show was small but the vehicles were impressive. Nina Crowder | Miner

Alec submitted his Eagle Scout project proposal which was approved.

Alec has served the Troop as a Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader and Troop Guide. Alec has attended summer camp with the Troop every summer attending summer camp at Catalina Council’s Camp Lawton and Grand Canyon’s Camp Raymond in northern Arizona. Alec continues to work on his merit badges earning 57 merit badges to date.

Now seems like a good time to finish the story of the Basketry Merit Badge. The Merit Badge Instructor at Alec’s

first summer camp provided incomplete instructions twice and Alec and Martin were unable to weave two baskets, thus not completing the merit badge. For many years Alec refused to weave the two baskets needed to complete the Merit Badge, until finally at summer camp in 2014 Alec wove the two baskets and finished the Merit Badge (much to the relief of his parents).

In November of 2014 Alec began his Eagle project, a solar water heating system for the community pool, completing it in December. On Jan. 15, 2015 Alec passed his Eagle board of review and has recently

received final approval from National Scout Headquarters for the rank of Eagle Scout.

Alec has had a wonderful journey thus far and continues to participate in scouting in Troop 822 and Crew 822. He is currently working on completing his requirements for the National Medal for Outdoor Achievement, is attending the 100th anniversary celebration for the Order of the Arrow at the University of Michigan in August and is considering attending the 2017 National Scout Jamboree with the Crew contingent.

In talking with longtime residents of San

Manuel who have been involved in the Scouting in San Manuel, it is has been 16 years since any young man last achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in San Manuel.

Congratulations to Alec on his achievement of Eagle Scout, the highest attainable rank in Boy Scouts of America’s Scouting program. The whole Tri-Community is proud of you!

Currently Michael Sanchez, Michael Garcia and Robert Sweeney are working to complete their Eagle Scout rank. If any of you know these young men please encourage them to complete their journey to Eagle.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints completed a new Family History Center that will serve members and the public in the Tri-Community and surrounding communities. According to Sharon Evans, Family History director, the new center will

be a tremendous asset to members and the public who have a desire to research, seek out, and learn more about their ancestors. Hands-on experience will be provided to those who attend. The open house is scheduled for

Saturday, May 2, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 1001 South McNab Parkway, San Manuel, Ariz., 85631. Members of the church believe that the family is the primary eternal unit on earth. With that in mind, it

is important to members to know who their ancestors are. People gain great strength from knowing who their ancestors are, how they lived, what trials they faced, etc. The Family History Center will allow the public to search out their ancestors as well.
