Pipe is generally divided into two cat-egories: rigid and flexible. A pipe isrigid when it will not accept anydeflection without structural distress.Examples are concrete, clay, andcast iron. Flexible pipe will accept atleast 2 percent deflection withoutstructural distress. Steel, aluminum, and thermoplastics fall into this cate-gory. We can further divide flexiblepipe into elastic materials, which arethe metal pipes, and viscoelastic, represented by thermoplastic materials.

While rigid pipe can be traced backto the Roman Empire, high densitypolyethylene drainage pipe has onlybeen in use since the 1950s. In thisrelatively brief period, HDPE hasbeen the subject of exhaustive labo-ratory tests and field experiments. Inreal-world installations, the producthas built an impressively successfulrecord of trouble-free performance.

Today, we see an accelerating trendamong construction engineers toreplace steel and concrete pipingwith polyethylene because of itssuperior mechanical and chemicalproperties and cost-effective han-dling characteristics.

1. Structural strength. HDPE'stoughness and flexibility enable itto withstand fill heights of 100feet or more. Tests at Utah StateUniversity show that heavy soilloads will fracture the wall of rigidpipe, but under identical condi-tions, will produce only moderatedeflection in flexible polyethylenepipe. HDPE will not crack orbreak during proper installation, and maintains its impact strengthat sub-zero temperatures.

2. Abrasion resistance. The fol-lowing chart indicates that the

material loss rate of HDPE isonly 15 to 25% that of reinforcedconcrete under controlled experi-

ments. And decades of in-situtesting and real-world installa-tions have demonstrated polyeth-yleneʼs interior toughness. It isused successfully with harsh min-ing and dredging slurries, and isvirtually immune to damage from

even the most aggressive sewercleaning tools.

3. Light weight. Polyethyleneweighs 50 to 75% less than com-parable steel pipe, and is aboutone-tenth the weight of concrete. This translates into easier han-dling, smaller work crews, reduced heavy equipmentrequirements, and improvedsafety.

4. Chemically inert. HDPE is high-ly resistant to corrosion, and is

immune to galvanic and electro-mechanical reaction. As seen inthe diagram, polyethylene cansafely be used with soils or efflu-ents with a pH range of 1 to 14.

HDPE pipeʼs durability is dramatically demonstrated by this highway cross draininstalled in 1981 near anabandoned strip mine. Themetal pipe used prior to thistime had to be replaced everyfew years due to the highlyacidic (an average pH of 2.1)and abrasive run-off from themine. To this day, the poly-ethylene cross drain shows nosign of needing replacement.

N-12 pipe has built an impressiveservice record in storm water andother drainage applications wherehydraulics are important and durabili-ty is critical. The pipe is offered indiameters from 4" through 60", in 6m(19' 8") lengths and also in 13'lengths for smaller trench boxes.

Corrugated exterior addsstrengthThe natural toughness of HDPE isenhanced by the corrugated exteriorwhich increases the structuralstrength of N-12 pipe. It is designedfor use under both H25 and E80 liveloads, or with fill heights of 50 feet ormore. In fact, field research showsthe pipe performing well at depthsexceeding 100 feet. Even underharsh backfill conditions and shiftingsoils, N-12 pipe has continued togive outstanding performance.

Smooth interior providessuperior flowIn order to meet the most demandinghydraulic requirements, N-12 pipe ismanufactured with a smooth innerwall. This design insures maximumflow capacity, and PE's resistance toabrasion and corrosion will sustainthis capacity for years into the future.

With a recommended 0.012 rating, the pipe is ideal for applicationsrequiring low Mannings “n” values.

Convenience on the jobsiteN-12 pipe's light weight leads to anumber of job site economies: morepipe per delivery truck, easier han-dling, smaller crews, less heavyequipment, less pipe damage, andbetter safety. The pipe cuts easilyand requires no beveling for joining.

Water-tight and soil-tight systemsContinuing its commitment to invest-ment in new technologies, ADS hasdeveloped polyethylene pipe joiningsystems unparalleled in the corrugat-ed pipe industry. Todayʼs N-12 pipeprovides unsurpassed joint integrity, with built-in bell joints and fast push-together installation.

Soil-tight pipe.

N-12 ST IB pipe, delivered with anintegral bell-and-spigot joint, meetsthe most stringent soil-tight require-ments. The reinforced bell resistsdistortion, chipping or cracking, andspans three corrugations, exceedingAASHTO M294 recommendations. The in-line bell design eliminates theneed to dig bell holes in the trench.Joints are sealed by a factory-installed rubber O-ring gasket thatmeets all requirements of ASTMF477.

Water-tight pipe.

In the early 1990s, ADS pioneeredthe watertight joint for corrugatedpolyethylene pipe. Continuing devel-opment has resulted in todayʼs N-12 WT IB pipe, incorporatingpatented technology developed inthe aerospace industry. The designis based on the flared bell andtapered spigot of N-12 ST IB pipe, with two important differences. Thesealing area of the bell is reinforcedwith a proprietary 2" ceramic/polymercomposite collar which improves thejointʼs integrity and tolerance control.Secondly, a patented omni-direction-al gasket meeting ASTM F477 is fac-tory-installed into the spigot, increas-ing its sealing force as hydrostaticpressure increases. The designmeets or exceeds ASTM D3212 labtest and ASTM F1417 water-tightfield test requirements, and fills anessential role in complying with thestricter demands of new EPA waterquality guidelines.

Years of field and laboratory evaluationshave made N-12 the most tested pipe inthe industry.

StormTech underground chamberscan function as storm water deten-tion, retention, “first flush” storagesystems, or a combination of these. They can be installed in commercial, municipal, industrial and residentialprojects. They are engineered toexceed AASHTOʼs LRFD recom-mended design factors for EarthLoads and HS-20 live loads.

The chambers convey water laterallythrough their sidewall openings, aswell as through the angular stonefoundation and backfill, to maintain aconstant elevation in a bed. Theyallow for the storage of large stormwater volumes at minimum depths.

The durable, chemical-resistantpolypropylene chambers are offeredin two sizes: (1) the SC-740 chamberprovides a minimum of 2.2 ft3/ft2 ofstorage, and (2) the SC-310 low pro-file unit allows 1.3 ft3/ft2 minimum ofstorage. Chambers can be cut at 6.5"intervals, providing excellent designflexibility for nearly all sites. They canbe centralized or decentralized, con-figured into beds or trenches of vary-ing sizes and shapes, and installedeasily around utilities or otherobstructions. Two people can safelyand efficiently form rows of cham-bers without complicated connectors, special tools or heavy equipment.

StormTech Isolator™ RowThe Isolator Row is a patent-pendingstructure that acts as an extended

subsurface detention basin, allowingwater to exit through its surroundingfilter fabric while sediment is trappedwithin. The Isolator Row inexpen-sively enhances TSS removal, andcan be equipped with inspectionports for fast and easy maintenanceand cleaning.

The geotextile covering prevents themigration of fines out of the row whilemaintaining adequate hydraulicflows. Several geotextiles can bespecified for use with the IsolatorRow, depending on soil and site con-ditions. A list of suitable geotextiles isavailable from ADS.

Water Quality Units

ADS is profoundly aware of theimpact that EPA Phase II stormwa-ter management regulations willhave on property owners and devel-opers, and has been active in creat-ing innovative products andprocesses to aid in runoff controland improved water quality.

Water Quality Units are designed tomanage the quality of water dis-charged during a storm by removingsediments and hydrocarbons. Atypical design involves an under-ground pipe assembly using weirplates and velocity control devicesto separate out suspended pollu-tants. The system features accessrisers for easy cleaning and mainte-nance, and a bypass system to prevent re-suspension of capturedpollutants by storms greater thanthe first flush. Design variationsinclude filtering mechanisms toremove difficult particulates such asheavy metals and mercury.

Proven effectivenessField and laboratory tests have consistently verified the excellentperformance of ADS Water QualityUnits.• Installed units in Davidson County,

Tennessee, showed a mean TSS removal efficiency of 91.4%.

• Sediment removal lab tests inMassachusetts at varying flow rates yielded efficiencies from81.9% to 90.3%.

• Oil capture was measured by anindependent laboratory under a range of flow volumes. The meancapture rate was 79.8%.

Complete test reports are availablefrom ADS.

The primary bene-fit of its panel design is quickdrainage response after introductionof water, making it ideal for time-criti-cal applications such as high-trafficroad and track beds. Other popularuses include building foundationdrainage, golf courses, athletic fields, airport runways, railroad track bal-last, and perimeter “curtain” drainagefor landfills and leaching fields.

Designed with a differenceCompetitive panel shape productsdepend on the tensile modulus of ageotextile wrap to maintain an openflow channel. When this low-modu-lus fabric collapses, the waterway isobstructed, reducing its hydraulicefficiency. AdvanEDGE pipe does not rely onthe geotextile for structural support. Its strength is derived from a corru-gated cylinder maintained by pillarslocated strategically throughout thecore. The result is a series of oval-shaped sections with all-directionstrength. This completely enclosedwaterway with fewer projectionsallows AdvanEDGE to function as apipe, discharging more water to theoutlet.

Stronger materialHDPE has an unbeatable combina-tion of mechanical and chemicalproperties for drainage pipe applica-tions. Many competitive geocompos-ite cores are made from less desirable materials such as low den-sity PE or styrene.

Superior flowThe chart below shows Advan-EDGE's hydraulic capacity vs. slope.AdvanEDGE has more than twicethe hydraulic flow of competitivepipe.

Economical installationThe slim-line profile of AdvanEDGEpipe allows for installation in a nar-row trench, easily dug with high-speed trenching equipment. Itrequires no gravel or select backfill, and can be installed directly againsta wall or structural member. Advan-EDGE can also be installed horizon-tally directly on the subgradebeneath playing turf and golf greens. This orientation accelerates waterremoval and cuts labor costsbecause no trenches are required.

Small DiameterN-12 FittingsADS offers a full com-plement of injectionmolded fittings in 4"through 12" sizes. These fittings areavailable in bothwater-tight modelswhich include an F477gasket for attaching tothe spigot end of thepipe, and soil-tightstyles with cleats inthe bells of the fittings.Item selectionincludes couplers, reducing couplers, tees, wyes, tee-wyes, 45° elbows, and 90° elbows.

The addition of these fittings resultsin an all-HDPE water- or soil-tightpiping system from 4" through 60"diameters. There is no need toswitch to SDR-35 PVC pipe in sizesunder 15", particularly since polyeth-ylene offers several significant bene-fits over PVC: better impact

strength, no edge beveling, andsuperior resistance to chemicals andabrasion.

UNI-T™ Tapping TeeThe UNI-T (“Uni-tee”) is a versatilepolyurethane tapping tee that pro-vides significant savings in installa-tion time and inventory costs. It isavailable in 4", 6" and 8" diametersand features a patented spacer ringsystem that assures a snug, soil-tightconnection into 12" through 60" cor-rugated HDPE pipe.

The spacer rings can be individuallyremoved or left in place to accommo-date varying corrugation heights onthe main line pipe. Each UNI-Tcomes with a Nyloplast adapter cou-

pling for connecting 4", 6" or 8" N-12service pipe.

This innovative concept offers sever-al benefits for suppliers andinstallers:

• Reduced inventory. Stock justthree items for 4", 6" and 8" service connections to 12" through 60" corru-gated pipe. Replaces 15 items thatwould normally be stocked.

• One-piece fitting. Competitorshave multiple components.

• Minimal extension into main line.5% or less obstruction of flow.

• Simple, fast installation. No toolsrequired. No clamps or mechanicaldevices. No special alignment necessary.
