Brief Overview: Brief Overview: While sometimes overshadowed

by its neighbors (Russia and Sweden), Finland has a

Scandinavian charm all its own. Its undisturbed lakes and

forests are a legacy of its late industrialization and agrarian

history. Yet in Helsinki and other urban centers, you’ll find a

bustling social democracy and world famous companies –

including Nokia Corporation. The Finnish enjoy top rates of

education, economic competitiveness, civil liberties, quality of

life, and human development compared to the rest of the world.

Finland is truly a winter wonderland, as most of the country is

covered in snow. Santa’s official residence is located in Lapland,

the northernmost province in Finland. The police even have an

official reindeer mascot to advocate for traffic safety! Finland’s

climate has led to the development of a number of winter

sports and outdoor activities. In summer, Finns pursue

hunting, fishing, mushroom gathering and other outdoor

pursuits in their summer homes in the countryside.

Visitors to Finland will notice a hallmark of Finnish culture:

silence. In Finland, it is agreed that if one does not have

something worth saying, it is better to be silent. Words are

chosen carefully and taken at face value. It is an introvert’s

paradise! Don’t worry though – most Finns speak English

and will help foreigners most hospitably!

HEL 100-101 BEST OF HELSINKI Half Day

This program provides an overview

of Finland's capital starting at the

harbor and following along the

coastal road. You will see Embassy

Park, an open-air market, and

expansive Senate Square,

dominated by an elegant Lutheran

Cathedral whos steep steps were

used in scenes for the film "Reds,"

which substitutes Helsinki for St. Petersburg.

The drive continues down the chic Esplanadi, a boulevard lined with

designer shops, and along Mannerheim Street, Helsinki's main

thoroughfare. Its landmarks include the imposing Parliament building, the National Museum, and Finlandia Hall, a

concert hall designed by renowned Finnish architect, Alvar Aalto. Further along, you will see the stadium that

hosted the 1952 Olympics, the new Opera House on Töölönlahti Bay, and the highly unusual Rock Church, an

underground house of worship blasted out of

native granite and capped with a copper

dome.

Finally, at Sibelius Park, you will stop at the

amazing, stainless steel-tube monument to

the great Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius. At

the end of the tour, you may return to the ship

or remain downtown to explore on your own.

Please Note: The Rock Church may be closed due to religious services. The order of sites visited may vary. Due to new traffic

restrictions, guests will have a 10 minute walk each way to reach the Rock Church.

golden icons and mosaics. From there, walk

along Tallinn’s medieval cobblestone streets to view the Gothic Dome

Church, known as St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Descend Long Leg Street to the Lower Town to visit Great Guild Hall, one of the most distinguished public buildings

of medieval Tallinn. The Gothic-style building, completed in 1410, was built on what was then the main street, near

the Town Hall. The next stop is Town Hall Square, to view the exterior of the Gothic Town Hall and charming 15th

century Apothecary. Opened as far back as 1422, it is the oldest continuously running pharmacy in Europe. Your

lunch will be served at one of Tallinn’s typical Old Town restaurants accompanied by a concert of medieval music.
