Nepalese cuisine refers to the food eat-en in Nepal. The country’s cultural and geographic diversity provides ample

space for a variety of cuisines based on ethnic-ity and on soil and climate. Nevertheless dal-bhat-tarkari is eaten throughout the country. Dal is a soup made of lentils and spices. This is served over boiled grain, bhat – usually rice but sometimes another grain – with vegeta-ble curry, tarkari. Condiments are usually small amounts of extremely spicy chutney or pickle (achaar) which can be fresh or fermented. The variety of these is staggering, said to number in the thousands. Other accompaniments may be sliced lemon (nibuwa) or lime (kagati) with fresh green chili (hariyo khursani). Dhindo is a traditional food of Nepal.

Much of the cuisine is variation on Asian themes. Other foods have hybrid Tibetan, In-dian and Thai origins.

Helsinki nightlife on a budget!Wallet-friendly bars

As you can probably guess, the cheapest bars are not in the city centre. There

are exceptions, but on the whole the most aff ordable bars near the city centre can be found in the Kallio district. Suitable alternatives can be found along Vaasankatu street, which begins from the Sörnäinen metro station, or along Porthaninkatu and Kolmas Linja in the southern parts of Kallio. The bohemian bar culture has recently begun to spread from there towards the district of Vallila.

Any exploration into the public saunas in Helsinki should begin with the last remain-

ing wood-heated sauna in the city. The Koti-harju sauna, situated in the Kallio district, has served sauna-goers for over 80 years.

Kotiharju has separate saunas for men and women. For hardened heat enthusiasts, a “pipe rack” has been installed in the men’s sauna, above the oth-er bench lev-els, allowing the amount of heat to be reg-ulated from the pipe rack level. If the temperature goes too high, you can cool down by taking in the view of the streets of Kallio.

Those who enjoy swimming to round off the sauna experience go to the Rastila camp-ing area. The sauna, located next to the sea, has separate times for men and women. There is a unisex time where sauna-goers are required to wear a swimsuit. The Rastila beach sauna will be renovated in May, but will be open to visitors in June.

You can also combine sauna and swim-ming at the Yrjönkatu swimming hall, which is built in the Classical style. You can dip into the water naked if you like.

There are separate times for men and women, either with or without swimsuit. The entrance fee includes swimming and electric sauna. For an additional fee, you get to visit the steam and wood sauna on the second fl oor. During the summer the swim-ming hall is closed. And don´t forget the fa-mous Swimming Stadion near Olympic sta-dion in centre.
