2010 Salutatorian

Valedictorian ~ Nicole Johnson Nicole Johnson, daughter of Gary and Sheri Johnson has been named Valedictorian for the Class of 2016. Nicole is a member of the National Honor Society, was the Secretary of Key Club, was involved in the musical South Pacific, was the Writing Editor of the Yearbook as well as a member of Student Council, I-Club, and the BABES program (beginning awareness basic education studies). Nicole also received several honors and awards including Excellence in Education, Honor Roll, Student of the Week, Excellence in English Award, and the Top Government and Economics Award. Nicole plans to attend Northern Michigan University to major in Business Computer Information Sys-tems. Following her baccalaureate program, she plans to obtain a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science. Nicole’s ultimate goal is to be a Young Adult Services Librarian.

Salutatorian ~ Lorissa Juntti Our Salutatorian, Lorissa Juntti, daughter of Loretta Roncaglione and Steve Juntti, was involved in Student Council as class president for three years, was the Editor in Chief for the Yearbook, was a member of Key Club, National Honor Society Secretary and participated on the golf and dance teams. Lorissa was named Student of the Week and participated in Excellence in Education. Her future plans include at-tending Northern Michigan University to study psychology.

Bye Bye Birdie Invades Peterson Auditorium, Ishpeming & The Congress

In May 2016, the Ishpeming High School presented the musical Bye Bye Birdie to incredibly appreciative audiences for three performances. Director Denise Clark put a spin on the show by cleverly changing the setting to Ishpeming, Michigan from Sweet Apple, Ohio. Incorporated into the show were landmarks the Water Tower, Peterson Auditorium and of course, The Congress. Junior Griffin Pepin and sophomore Lyndsey Dobson played the lead characters; Albert Peterson and Rose Alvarez. Also in major roles were sophomore Jordan Christian (Kim Maki), senior Rachael Loman (Mrs. Mae Peterson), sophomore Isaac Lazenby (Conrad Birdie), sophomore Nicholas Conroy (Mr. Maki), senior Lindsay Corkin (Mrs. Maki), freshman Sam Kutchie (Randolph Maki), junior Matt Ferrett as Hugo Peabody and junior Ethan

Laitinen (Harvey Johnson, Ed Sullivan). Filling out the cast, were 30 students from 7th - 12th grade, and included six middle and high school teachers for the reprise of ―Kids!‖.

Some memorable moments include the chorus Harvey Johnson in ―The Tele-phone Hour‖, Albert Peterson in ―Put on a Happy Face‖, Conrad Birdie in ―One Last Kiss‖, Kim Maki singing How Lovely to Be a Woman, Mae Peterson sing-ing ―A Mother Doesn’t Matter Anymore‖ and the Maki family singing ―Kids!‖, Mr. Erl Langness and Mr. Jeff Olson’s dialog referring to C.C. Watson’s State Basketball Championship and how hard it would be to win more than one state championship brought cheers from the crowd.

The show was produced by Ishpeming High School choral director Mrs. Sheila Grazulis. With such a young cast, Clark and Grazulis look forward to watching these kids on stage in the future!

Excellence in Education Week Participants

Mrs. Swanson received the Phylllis and Max Reynolds Foundation Professional Development Award. She will use the award for a Mackinac Island Trip with the peer-to-peer student mentors to reinforce their participation in the program and also learn more about local history. Mr. Corey Stiles was presented with the Peninsula Medi-cal Professional Development Award. He will use the award to purchase books, film and supplementary re-sources to establish an interdisciplinary social studies and English curriculum.

Industry Tours & Local Days of Excellence During the week, outstanding students (grades 8 — 12) from each local school district are hosted by Excellence in Education Business Partners at local Days of Excellence designed to honor students for their academic success. Following the Excellence in Education Breakfast, the stu-dents are each assigned to a tour. Students have the opportunity to tour Cliffs NR, RTI, Eagle Mills, or N.M.U. The Day of Excellence concludes with a luncheon at the N.M.U. Great Lakes Rooms for honored students and community leaders.

Excellence in Education Excellence in Education Week is designed to publicly recognize the outstanding academic achievement of students and excellent performance of educators in Marquette and Alger Counties. Celebrated on an annual basis, Excellence in Education Week joins top businesses from our community with our local schools to celebrate educational excellence and quality schools.

Professional Development Awards Area educators are also honored at the banquet and receive $500 professional development awards. The educators utilize the awards to further their education, enhance their classroom activities, or develop unique school projects. On Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. at Negaunee High School, 19 area adults received their high school diplomas from the Ishpeming-Negaunee-NICE Adult Education Program. During the 48 years of service, the program has graduated 1620 adults according to Community Schools Director, Bill Hartman. Graduate speaker for the class of 2016 was Samantha Croschere of the Ishpeming School District and guest speaker was Eric Mason, probation and parole agent. Superintendents Bryan DeAugustine of NICE, Carrie Meyer of Ishpeming, and Dan Skewis of Negaunee, along with their board presidents, Principal Jason Houle, and Community Schools Director Bill Hartman, presented diplomas. Father Larry VanDamme of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming gave the invocation and benedic-tion, and Kitty Kososki, Teacher with the Ishpeming-Negaunee-NICE Community Schools, served as Master of Ceremonies.

Dear Parents/Guardians: As the 2015-2016 school year has come to a close, we must reflect on how far we have come and where we are head-ed. The dedication and drive of the staff and students at the Ishpeming Public School District, is impressive to say the least. Together everyone is making a visible difference for our students, families, and community. Everyone should be proud of the significant gains in the area of both academics and athletics. For the state standard-ized M-Step assessments, Ishpeming is above the state average for the number of students scoring proficient in all test-ed areas. Our student NWEA scores indicate significant growth in all the areas of Math and English Language Arts, for kindergarten through grade 12. The data suggests that Ishpeming Public Schools are working hard to advance learning for all students. We are able to achieve such results due to the intense interventions for the students in need. As the staff continually works on School Improvement, they also focus on creating a learning environment conducive for maximum academic results. The climate and culture of our buildings are shaped directly from implementation of the P.O.W.E.R program, Peer-To-Peer, Safe and Civil Schools, and a positive behavioral intervention program. All of these efforts are designed to improve the academic and social environment of our school system and community. Moving forward, Ishpeming will continue its tradition of educational excellence. We will do this by offering an all-inclusive education, providing unique experiences, and creating exceptional athletes. All of these accomplishments highlighted will continue, with a balanced budget for the 2016-2017 school year. There will continue to be financial chal-lenges for all Michigan School Districts over the next couple years, and Ishpeming will not be immune to those challeng-es. With sound financial and operational management, we will continue to make decisions to keep expenditures in line with revenues. The success of the Ishpeming District is also influenced by the support of parents and community. The support received from all is an integral part to creating a great school district. Only together can we create such excellence. As we say good-bye to the graduating class of 2016, we wish you a healthy and happy future. May you all find success in your own eyes. We say ―good-bye‖, as we also say ―welcome‖ to our new kindergarten class. Welcome to the Hema-tite Family! We look forward to working with the new families. Have a safe and fun summer.
