Hendricks County Master Gardeners

Association

I love the summer months that give me so much more daylight to get things accomplished, but August is upon us, and shorter days. Garden harvests are in full swing and the tomatoes are the best tasting that I have had in years. The County Fair is behind us and we had a great gathering at Nancy Rice’s home in Jamestown. The weather was perfect, the camaraderie great and those receiving awards were filled with joy at their accomplishments. August brings us the State Fair and a Field Trip to the IMA for a guided tour of the gardens which will be a wonderful event. So much to see! Make sure that you take your cameras and take some great photos. Our Annual Photography contest takes place at the September meeting, and this would be a great time to get those shots. I hope to see increased participation this year. We have fewer cate-gories (see page 7), and I am sure that you have some awesome photos to share! Don’t forget to register early for “Adventures In Gardening”. The dead-line for early registration is August 7th. It will be a great educational experience. This years topic is very timely and we have great speakers. There are many opportunities to be a part of this event as a volunteer, as well. Enjoy today because tomorrow is only hours away! Debbie

The HCMG August meeting will be Saturday, August 24th, for a Free Guided Tour of the gardens surrounding the home and estate of the former J.K. Lilly, Jr. We will meet at 9:45 AM at the Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion of the Indianapolis Museum of Art on 4000 Michigan Road in Indianapolis. The tour will be given between 10:00 and 11:00 AM, and you are welcome to bring guests. Directions from the Westside: Take I-465 north to the 38th Street exit. Go east on 38th Street about 5 miles to Michi-gan Road. Turn left onto Michigan Road and left again at the traffic light at 4000 Michigan Road, into the IMA grounds. You can also exit left directly from 38th Street to the Museum entrance. Free parking for all is available on a first come first serve basis at the Greenhouse Shop, the exteri-or lots, and the loop off of 38th Street near 100 Acres. There is a $5 fee for non-members to park in the un-derground garage or large surface lot closest to the Museum. Visitors who purchase more than $50 worth of merchandise at the Museum Store, Gallery Shop or the Greenhouse Shop will receive parking valida-tion. Validation is only available on the day of visit at the shop registers. The staff at the Garden and Museum would like to be given an approximate head count so that they can prepare for our visit. Please contact Jackie Rosales at [email protected] by August 15, and state if you plan to go to the IMA gardens and also, how many guests you will bring. We hope to see you there!

Please Note: There will be NO Tuesday night meeting for HCMG in August

THOUGHTS FROM THE EDITOR...

The Intern Class of 2013 came to an end on May 28th. They are a very diverse and interest-ing group of people. Now, we have a new "crop" of Master Gardeners. Hooray!! The last class was special. Not only was it their last class of the term, but a pizza party had been planned. It has been my pleasure to be the Hostess for the Intern Classes for the past four years. The class presented me with a gift certificate to Cox’s Plant Farm, for which I thank them, one and all. I look forward to seeing each and every one of them at future Master Gardener meetings. Thank you all, Pat Harmon

HENDRICKS COUNTY MASTER GARDENER JULY MEETING

The summer sun was shining down on our Master Gardeners during the July meeting at the home of Nancy Rice, in Jamestown. While the hot temps of the day were waning, members enjoyed the early evening sun slowly descending as they sat under the large shade tree in the back yard waiting patiently for the meet-ing to begin. As at our usual meetings, members chatted about their summer happenings and discussed how really nice this summer has been compared to how blistering hot last year had been. Of course, that line of thinking also brought up how incredibly, and overwhelmingly,

the weeds have taken over our garden landscapes. It has certainly been a challenge. The serving table began to fill up as members arrived...Brats and Burgers cooking on the grill filled the air with mouth-watering scents which made us yearn for the meeting to begin. The meeting

began with an announcement about our “Adventures In Gardening” event which will take place September 28th, after which the long antici-pated awards presentation began. While several members who were to receive awards were not present, they were still acknowledged. Those pre-sent received their certificates and new badges with an enthusiastic congratulations. Following the awards presentation, like most organizations which include “Fellowship”, the picnic ensued. The table was adorned with freshly made salads

from our own garden produce, and fresh fruits in a great array with desserts of all kinds. All of it was simp-ly wonderful! After our picnic, Nancy took the group on a tour of her gardens where she has carefully placed plants that have really done well. While the yard and garden are small, she has maximized the yard to include apple trees which were loaded with beautiful fruit, to a well-tended garden. Of interest was the use of newspaper as a weed barrier which was covered with the leftovers of her ornamental grasses used as mulch. It works great! No weeds to be found. The borders of her yard are full of many small shrubs which in time, will create a wonderful sense of privacy as well as beautiful blooms to enjoy.

Five Hendricks County MGs went on this fascinating tour led by Jim Trocha, to Grand Rapids, Michi-gan, home of Meijer Gardens, which also included , Melissa Pearman, Colletta Kosiba, Linda Rogers, and

Jackie Rosales. We left at noon on July 21st and arrived in Douglas, Michigan, several hours later. We went to an out-standing restaurant, “Everyday People Café,” where we enjoyed a tasty supper. We completed the evening by spending some time at the beach on Lake Michi-gan and touring the quaint shop-ping area at nearby Saugatuck. Early the next morning we toured the Conservatory at Meijer Gar-dens, a massive glass house with a unique sculptured floor and

rooms featuring ecosystems such as desert and rainforest along with a carnivo-rous plant room and Victorian Garden Parlor. Other highlights included sculp-tures by Chihuly and Rodin as well as an exhibit of ash paintings by Zhang Huan. We went on a tram ride through a number of gardens with sculptures by well-known artists throughout. A favorite of mine was “Leonardo’s Horse,” a massive sculpture created by Nina Akamu based on the original design by Leonardo DaVinci . We walked

through a woodland shade garden, and viewed “Michigan’s Farm Garden,“ near the Lena Rader farmhouse. The gardens in this Park as a whole were packed with annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees that seemed to be peaking out in beau-ty and color. We had the pleasure of having a very sweet and knowl-edgeable guide, Maxine, show us through parts of the Park and Con-servatory. Before leaving Grand

Rapids, we visited the Grand Ideas Garden created by the Kent County, MI Master Gardeners. This was an exceptionally beautiful garden, prob-

ably close to an acre in size, and was a landscaper’s dream. The MG’s there have been heavily sponsored by local businesses and organizations and they have made great use of the funding. The ride home was a whirl-wind of stops including the Fenn Val-ley Winery, Bluestar Farms (blueberry) Nursery, the Oink Ice Cream Shop, and the area around Indiana Dunes. I managed to fair well during this journey, but the re-

maining four were exhausted.

“How to Feed a Planet ‘

How do you feed a world of hungry people while maintaining a healthy natural environ-ment? This year’s one-day seminar focuses on the complex issues of food production.

The basics of growing food to feed a planet are far from basic; whether industrial, natural, organic or genetically modified, our food comes from many sources near and far,

simple and complex. This year’s speakers will each discuss a piece of this complex puzzle of food production. The day ends with a panel where our speakers will discuss common issues and concerns around

food production, conflicts and controversies, and how various methods of food production can be balanced to feed the world while maintaining a healthy planet.

Seminar Guess Speakers:

Ken Meter: Crossroads Resource Center-Emerging Food Systems in Indiana

Cris G. Hochwender, Ph.D.: Environmental Science, Evolutionary Ecology, Assistant Professor, University of Evansville–Restoration of native seeds and plant diversity

David Wyeth: District 5 Director of Indiana Farm Bureau. A local fourth-generation farmer; his family has owned land in Hendricks County since 1919.
