#304 ii Hendrie and Bolthoff

Introduction to the Collection

The scene was Colorado in the 1860s. The discovery of gold in 1859 brought an influx of fortune seekers looking for dreams in the form of precious metals.

Charles Hendrie surveyed the mining camps dotting the mountains near Central City in search of his own dream. He was there looking for an opportunity to generate business for his manufacturing company, Hendrie Iron Works of Burlington, Iowa .

Mining machinery was needed in Colorado; however, Hendrie lacked experience in its manufacture. Such equipment was available in California where it had developed in the years since the gold rush of 1849. Hendrie acquired plans from California and returned to Iowa to begin machinery production. He developed a market in Colorado delivering products to mining communities by way of mule train, thus becoming the first manufacturer of mining machinery east of the Rocky Mountains.

Hendrie established the Bureka Foundry and Machine Shop in Central City during 1861. Production in Central City eventually overshadowed that of the Burlington plant, so Hendrie called his sons, Charles and William, to assist with Colorado operations. As business expanded, he sent for the Burlington plant manager, Henry Bolthoff. Together these men, along with Hendrie's third son Bdwin, built a company that operated for over 100 years.

In 1876, Hendrie Bros. and Bolthoff, opened a branch office in Denver in order to provide better service to customers and expand business opportunities. The move was successful, and three years later, the company relocated its headquarters to Denver.

As the mining industry grew throughout the West, so did the problems and challenges of meeting industry demands for products and services. Hendrie and Bolthoff responded by producing not only heavy mining machinery, but also support equipment, tools, and supplies for mining operations . In addition, company designers solved the problem of transporting heavy machinery through rugged mountain areas by developing sectionalized equipment which could be safely carried by mule train to remote mining camps.

1304 iii Hendrie and Boltboff

The advent of the automobile and the introduction of electric power on a large scale into the West lead Hendrie and Bolthoff to develop new markets such as automotive repair, parts and supplies. They expanded their enterprise to include the design and construction of electric power plants, two of which were built for the towns of Longmont and Loveland in Colorado. The expansion also included the distribution of products by well known manufacturers like RCA, Yale and Towne, Stanley works, and others. With these changes, the company became the Hendrie and Bolthoff Manufacturing and Supply Company .

In 1932 the organization opened branch stores throughout Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, and South Dakota. By 1961 there were Hendrie and Bolthoff locations in eighteen cities across five states, employing 525 persons, and averaging 16 million dollars a year in sales. During the same year, the firm merged with Gulf and Western Industries of Houston, Texas, becoming a unit of its American Parts Company.

Throughout its history, the Hendrie and Bolthoff Manufacturing and Supply Company developed numerous business interests and relationships, either as an organizational entity, or through the activities of one or more of its corporate officers. Not only did the company manufacture mining machinery, several of its corporate officers were involved in mining operations. For example, Edwin B. Hendrie and several partners formed the Wolftone Mining and Milling Company of Leadville, Colorado. They were involved with the mining concern for nearly 30 years between 1890 and 1917.

The Colorado Historical Society holds the records of the Hendrie and Bolthoff Manufacturing and Supply Company. Records of the Wolftone Mining and Milling Company are part of the collection~ In addition there are product catalogs, technical drawings and blueprints, and photographs of Hendrie and Bolthoff building properties and the Wolftone Mine . The photographs are located in the Society's Photography Department.

Other known repositories of Hendrie and Bolthoff are: the Department of Special Collections at the University of California, santa Barbara; the Colorado School of Mines; and the Western History collection of the Denver Public Library. The Denver Public Library also holds the Hendrie Family Papers (1898-1963), centering around Charles F . Hendrie, his wife and daughters .

Scope and Contents

The Hendrie and Bolthoff Collection is divided into nine series containing historical , business, financial, and legal documents, as well as correspondence and personnel records. The collection also contains records from subsidiary business interests and miscellaneous materials. In addition to these materials, there are product catalogs dating 1915-1957, and vast number of blueprints for machinery and work projects.

The first series, Historical, 1912-1975, includes annual reports, company names changes, a Diamond Jubilee booklet commemorating the organization's 75th anniversary, and photocopies of the organization's articles of incorporation .

Correspondence, 1891-1938, 1944-1949, is divided into three subseries around general business (1891-1900 , 1907-1938, 1944-1949); correspondence to individuals and businesses (1912-1938, 1944-1949); and financial (1900-1934), which includes correspondence to individuals, businesses, and government agencies. Correspondence is designated financial when it specifically relates to monetary transactions or some money matter.

The third series, Internal business, 1901, 1917-1938, contains documents related to the purchase and remodelling of business properties by Hendrie and Bolthoff between 1901 and 1938. There are client work estimates and shipping orders for Loveland, Colorado (1924); and notices of directors and stockholders meetings for Sugar City Electric Company (1917), a business enterprise in which some Hendrie and Bolthoff personnel owned stock or held office.

Legal, 1885, 1893-1931, 1937, includes job and sales contracts, distributor franchise agreements, deeds, and litigation notices.

The series, Financial and tax, 1888-1908, 1915, 1923-1924, consists of certificates, assessments, tax schedules and a financial ledger dating 1892-1908 . There are several gaps within the series; therefore, an accurate financial picture of the company may be difficult to develop.
