The Ford Focus has notched up the enviable title of world’s best-selling car, according to HIS Automotive.

The announcement comes as Ford celebrated the 350 millionth Ford ever made. The landmark car was a Ford Focus built at the company’s Rayong factory in Thailand. “Consider, for a moment, the enormity of 350 million vehicles,” said John Fleming, Ford executive vice president of global manufacturing. “It’s equivalent to producing one vehicle every 10 seconds for 109 years; and, if placed end to end, would stretch to the moon and back, twice.”

The current, third generation of the mid-size car, launched in 2011, was designed on an unprecedented global scale, helping to make more technologies and features economically viable than ever before for cars in this segment. Key innovations in the new Focus include Active City Stop low-speed safety system, Active Park Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Aid, Traffic Sign Recognition, Auto High Beam, Driver Alert and Adaptive Cruise Control.

Last year, Ford launched the 250PS Focus ST, Ford’s first global performance car, and began offering the Focus with the new 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine, which was named the 2012 “International Engine of the Year” in June. A zero emissions Focus Electric, Ford’s first ever all-electric passenger car, will be available later this year.

Stephen Hendy told Autoblog, “It’s no great surprise that the Focus is so popular, Ford has produced an amazing product which appeals to such a wide audience. At our dealerships we are finding that customers love the stunning new look, they are impressed with the class-leading technology and have really embraced innovations such as parking assist. The affordable price brings all of these features within the reach of so many car buyers who never thought they could afford such a great package.”

Bitterne Park School became a School of Dreams on 6th and 7th December when Honda’s team visited the Southampton school to provide a free two-day ‘thinking skills’ workshop for 9-13 year-old pupils and educators (and a few Hendy staff too).

The Honda School of Dreams programme helps young people to understand the importance of pursuing their dreams,

Hendy Kia are sponsoring local Olympic rowing talent James Foad with a brand new silver Kia Sportage. The 25-year old Southampton-born rowing champion won a bronze medal in the men’s eight at the 2012 Games.

James has always been known as a talent at Hendy Kia; Group Sales Director Andy Stevenson used to row with James’s father and is keen to see him reach great heights.

“James is going for gold in Rio and will be at the World Championships in South Korea later this year. We’re only too happy to lend our support in his training,” said

R & W Traffic Management

When R & W Traffic Management purchased 11 Iveco Daily Dropside vehicles they made sure that Hendy vehicles will soon be helping to look after the roads

everybody drives on. The company looks after local major and minor roads, including motorways, making sure that they are kept in good condition, safe and secure.

Iveco Scaffolding

When 1st Scaffolding needed a pair of Iveco trucks, they talked to Bryan Clapp at Hendy IVECO Exeter. He sorted them out with a Stralis and Eurocargo, each with scaffold bodies built by Exeter Coachworks.

These were the first new Iveco vehicles in the customer’s fleet, and they were very pleased with their purchase, saying

“Hendy IVECO have supplied us with two fantastic new vehicles both with on board axle weighing equipment as this is very important to us in our industry. They will be maintained by Hendy workshops at Exeter on a fully maintained contract hire and we look forward to building our business and relationship with the Hendy Group.”

J&A Transporters Ltd.

J & A Transporters of Bridgwater, Somerset needed two new Iveco Stralis trucks, but this was no ordinary order. The stock vehicles had to go through extensive changes to suit the customer’s requirements, including fitment of dash-mounted air conditioning, chassis and fuel tank shortening and fitment of car transporter bodies originally built for a different chassis. Peter Swinnerton of Hendy Iveco took care of the arrangements, handing over the new trucks at the customer’s premises in Bridgwater.

Frank Greenslades Limited

When Frank Greenslades Ltd. found their existing vehicles weren’t getting the fuel economy they were led to expect, they ditched the poor performers after just one year and made their way to Hendy. After receiving quotes from DAF, Mercedes and Isuzu, Greenslades selected a 10-ton Iveco Eurocargo with a refrigerated body, which

returns a steady 17.5 mpg. Greenslades say that in the current climate of increasing fuel costs, they’ll benefit financially.

St. Austell Brewery, Cornwall

St. Austell Brewery has purchased commercial vehicles from Ian Grant for 20 years, and have always been pleased with the service and support from Hendy. Most recently, they ordered eight Eurocargo 16-tonne Curtainsiders for delivery in April. This will be one of the most high-profile Hendy fleets in the South West when the vehicles arrive, painted and ready for work.

It’s not the Honda dealership you might expect. Hendy Honda Southampton’s West Quay location doesn’t only sell cars in the Honda range – the showroom also has a new nautical theme.

The Honda car dealership now stocks and services Honda Marine equipment, and has been servicing and selling engines even before it opened. Now that the site has officially launched, customers are welcome to look around to find out more about Honda’s outstanding marine products.

Staff ProfilePaul Aburrow - Power ProductsI started in 1986 at Hendy Industrial Engines, now known as Hendy Power, straight out of school.

What’s your role?

I’m a Parts Sales Accounts Manager. I help the company find parts for all kinds of applications. Clients are looking for components for all kinds of machinery; I get involved in finding uses for Ford parts anywhere they will fit.

What does your job entail?

I go all over the country, presenting OEM parts to people building vehicles. I look at the product they’re trying to produce, and turn up with sample bits that could work. We’ve done ice-cream machines, fitted Ford parts to Mercedes Benz vans, Sunseeker boats, Lamborghinis, security desks, dentists’ chairs, Ford GT40 and AC Cobra replicas and even rollercoasters for Universal Studios.

We’re doing a project with the MOD that will have all Ford Ranger running gear and powertrain components. I just go in with an open mind and see what we can apply from the Ford or Iveco range. It’s not a normal parts department.

What do you find most challenging about it?

The challenge is racking your brain to see what might fit the customer’s application. It’s a brain teaser to fit something in. All the parts are part car, part question mark. They can go anywhere.

Worst thing that’s happened to you at work?

Being left high and dry in a forklift cherrypicker while everyone went to lunch! Nothing catastrophic has ever happened, I suppose. Being let down by the supplier is the worst one, but you get round it.

What do you like best about your role?

Each phone call is completely different. It could be about a marine engine on the other side of the world or a road sweeper or a minesweeper. Today I’ve got to find new air vents for a hovercraft.

Any advice for someone starting out in the industry?

Listen. Each day is a challenge. You’ve got to learn that you don’t get given things. Don’t expect things to be handed on a plate to you – if you really want to understand the industry, you’ve got to do it yourself!

Hendy Power to the rescue!

When a ferry in India got in trouble on 8th January and 180 lives were at risk, the Indian Coast Guard rushed to the rescue, saving everyone on board.

Of course, the Coast Guard couldn’t have left the harbour without power – Hendy Power – who supplied engines to the Hovercraft FPT Vector V8s owned by the ICG. Bravo boys.
