Secretary Preface I present to you this Annual Report for 2012/13. We have presented you with acknowledgement of all our supporters and sponsors. We are looking forward to some very exciting times with the building almost completed. We will be relying on all members to pull together on commissioning the new building with transfer of gear and equipment, setting up the gym and racking systems etc. The club has applied for a full club licence so we will be able to generate some finances to pay back our loan commitment and also general running of the club. The club has introduced social media as a communication mechanism to members and supporters. You can now contact us through Facebook, and Twitter I hope you enjoy this report and support our club sponsors. Again thanks to Jane Dewar Bray for formatting and designing this report. Also again I thank my wife Sue for the work she does behind the scene. Kevin Fitzgerald CLUB SECRETARY

HENLEY SURF LIFESAVING CLUB Page 6 ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013
Presidents Foreword Welcome to our Annual Report for 2012/ 2013, summarising the activities and achievements of our 88th year of volunteer service to the community. Our Club continues to grow and strengthen through all areas and this is a credit to all involved; from our enthusiastic youngsters in the Junior Club, their dedicated Age Group Leaders, the Junior Committee lead by Phil Hogan whose drive, leadership and planning has seen our Junior membership more than double during his six years as Junior Chair, our Trainers lead by Andrew Henry who have put in enormous time and effort to maintain our reputation of presenting candidates of the highest calibre for examinations, and Tom Lanyon and Peter Oborn, in charge of our Life Saving and Patrolling operations. Our membership is now at 572 across all age groups which is amazing given that we have purposely awaited the completion of the new clubrooms before embarking on any recruiting drives. We expect membership to increase with the opening of the new building, which will place pressure on our Trainers and Age Group Leaders, and we are planning for that. Our well oiled Big Row machine came into action in late 2012 and we had another very successful event on February 2nd with $63,000 raised. Our sincere thanks go to Katheryn Curnow, Carly Lutze, Jane Dewar and Kevin Fitzgerald who brought the event together, along with our support boat skippers comprising John Butterfield, Kevin Renfrey along with John Hatwell and Gavin Stagg. As with all 6 previous Big Rows we are most grateful for the generosity of Mr Robert Gerard AM for the loan of his tender boat which provides fantastic support for the fleet during the 68 kilometre Gulf crossing. The Board of West Beach Community Bank continue to offer fantastic support of the Club as a whole, and remain the naming rights sponsor of the Big Row. The bank's support of us, various other Clubs and schools in the district continues to amaze and we thank the Board and Shareholders most sincerely for their continued support. I have mentioned in the past that the new clubroom project has been a roller coaster ride. That hasn't changed during the past twelve to 18 months. Following the excitement of being told that all approvals were in place more delays presented that required Council and several Government departments to come together to formulate a speedy resolution. It was pleasing to see all agencies work together in this way and I again thank our Local State Labor Member and Club Member Paul Caica MP for his assistance and that of his Department. At the time of writing this report, the handover date for the building is advised as 6th August 2013; unfortunately too late for us to have the 2013 Annual General Meeting, but there will be decades of opportunities after this ‐ not to mention a few weeks of celebration from August. I'd like to thank my Building Committee colleagues in Phil Hogan, Joe Bayer and Matt Simone for their assistance and support on a very long, testing and emotional journey. I mentioned Paul Caica's support earlier and also wish to thank our Federal Labor Member Steve Georganas MP for his interest and support over many years, together with Councillors Jim Fitzpatrick and Robert Randall. I again acknowledge the support and dedication of our Management Committee during the past year and at the risk of being unfair to others, I wish to especially acknowledge the contributions of Kevin Fitzgerald and Mark Travers who have both picked up additional workload during the past year in support of the Building Committee. As always we thank all our volunteer members, our families, friends and our many supporters for their efforts in ensuring that our club remains successful and that our members are given every opportunity to keep learning more skills and continue their personal development. Above all, those who visit our beach are in very safe hands. NEVILLE FIELDER PRESIDENT

Club Captain Report
They say absence makes the heart grow fonder ‐ I think in our case, absence makes the club grow stronger. It’s been a challenging year at Henley, but one that I think has brought us closer together and has hopefully set us up for many successful years to come. As well as being without our club rooms, we’ve had the longest season in my memory with patrolling beginning back in October and then kicking off Rescue 2012, the Lifesaving World Championships, in early November. We patrolled all the way through to the 1st April and then still had water cover commitments for a long swim and the inaugural True Grit challenge event in May. Through all of this, we have managed to meet all of our patrol commitments, be involved in 5 rescues, accrue over 4300 patrol hours across our 500+ members and have been represented in local, state, interstate, national and world championship competition ‐ bringing home medals in most if not all of these fields. Quite an impressive achievement and one that is deserving of gratitude and recognition to all of our members who have been a part of this. All of this requires a significant amount of ‘behind the scenes’ organisation and would not have been possible without Peter Oborn and Sonja Smith keeping the lifesaving and competition areas, respectively, on track with formidable diligence and autonomy. Thank you both for everything you’ve done. We would have also struggled to fill our patrols without the continued stream of newly trained members flowing into our midst. Andrew Henry and his team of trainers has continued to work his magic and make this happen. Thank you to Andrew and everyone who has given their time and expertise to train new awardees, especially Roy Menner who has again put in a lot of work. I’d also like to thank our continued and new sponsors and everyone who has supported or contributed towards our fundraising activities, including the Big Row. Along with continual competition equipment refresh, with the improved storage facilities in the new building we’ll need to re‐kit some of our worn out patrol gear (flags, tents, etc.) before next season so fundraising and sponsorship continues to be an important part of keeping our operation on the beach and in the surf. Looking toward next season, we will be working on some new concepts for the structure of our patrol groups and rosters and welcome any ideas you may have to improve the efficiency of our patrols. I do want to reinforce, however, the importance of attending your rostered patrols ‐ it is unfair on your fellow volunteers for them to pick up any slack which may be left because you have missed your patrol; we understand that the roster may not work for everyone and that things come up unexpectedly ‐ but please remember the processes that are in place for notifying your patrol captain, finding substitutes, etc. Well done, and see you on the beach! Presentation Night Award Recipients President’s Award Kevin Fitzgerald Kevin has been our club Secretary for 4 years and has coached several boat crews to State and Interstate success. He is a mentor to many of his peers and our younger members. The President's Award is not to recognise a member for doing a job that they were appointed to do. It recognises a member who has done outstanding work in another area. Kevin has spent an enormous amount of time in planning for the new Top Room operation and ensuring that The Club meets all the regulatory guidelines that are required for operating a licensed premises. This includes meetings with the Liquor Commission, Clubs SA meeting with other recently redeveloped surf clubs to research what does and does not work for them and handling a vast number of enquiries from the public about hiring out our new facility. The new club rooms brings with it new opportunities and just as many challenges. It has required a great deal of time, planning and effort and Kevin has undertaken all of this work in addition to his role as our Secretary and a husband, father, coach, and mentor. Thanks Fitzy, and congratulations from all of us. Club Member(s) of the Year Andrew Henry Peter Oborn Andrew and Peter have been awarded joint Club Member of the Year in recognition of their respective contributions to our life saving services during the past season; they both personify the spirit of our club with their involvement and commitment to many different areas and critically, they have both been instrumental in ensuring our club has continued to meet and exceed our commitments on the beach. Andrew Henry Andrew has been our Chief Instructor for a number of years and the amount of new instructors and awards that have been gained under his guidance is testament to his efforts. It has been crucial this past 12 months to continue skilling up new members to continue to fill our patrols and to set us up for an influx of membership once our clubrooms are complete, and this has been extra difficult without a building in which to train squads. Peter Oborn In his only first year as the Club Vice‐Captain, Peter has been the coordinating force behind our primary task as a Surf Club ‐ our lifesaving services. Peter has managed our patrol groups and rosters, organised our Surf Com radio room roster and a number of water cover events outside of our regular beach patrol commitments; we could not have operated so successfully and painlessly this season without all of Peter's hard work. Peter has also been involved in as much and varied competition as he can get his hands on, is a stalwart of any club social events and took part in this year's Big Row.

Vice‐Captain’s Report As the season began, we predicted it would be challenging, operating out of two unpowered, shipping containers in the car park as we awaited the construction of our new building. However, I am very happy to report that in my inaugural season as Vice‐Captain, the patrol groups handled the difficulties and challenges of the absence of a clubhouse very well and I thank everyone for the effort they put in to their patrolling commitments throughout the season. Maybe it was what we were seeing slowly taking shape behind us that kept us all motivated and focused on the bigger picture! We had a total of 11 patrol groups and the Patrol Captain’s deserve special mention for the efforts they put in ensuring we provided a professional service in accordance with our patrol agreement. The Patrol Captains were:
1. Aaron Lewis 2. Jake Fitzgerald 3. Bianca Parker 4. Steve Horsman 5. Nick Travers 6. George Symeonakis 7. Shannon Asa 8. Beck Forest 9. Hannah Sitters 10. Tiarne Easley 11. Tom Lanyon
Thank you to all eleven of you. Special mention must go to Steve Horsman, Nick Travers, Beck Forest, Hannah Sitters and Tiarne Easley, as it was their first season in a Patrol Captain role and I truly appreciate the willingness with which they shouldered the extra responsibility. For the younger Patrol Captains, the opportunity to be mentored in leadership skills by a more senior, experienced member will stand you in good stead for your continued involvement with lifesaving and life in general. Additionally this season we had a dedicated ‘junior water cover’ patrol which, by season end, consisted of 38 members. I would like to make special mention of Roy Menner’s efforts in organising and running the junior water cover this season. In the pre‐season, as Tom Lanyon and I worked putting the patrols together and finalising the roster, Roy made repeated requests for more members to be dedicated to junior water cover. I started to get concerned that we wouldn’t have sufficient numbers for our patrol groups, but as Tom wisely pointed out, if Roy didn’t take care of the junior water cover requirements each week, it would be our responsibility. I quickly changed my tune and gave Roy all the patrolling members he desired! Thank you very much Roy, you did a sterling job. Attendance at patrols this season was a mixed bag. It was a long season, especially for those members who competed at Rescue 2012, and for some members patrol commitments were not given the priority required. Next season, please remember that by failing to meet your commitments you are not only letting your fellow patrol members down, but also your club and in the bigger picture, the community.
HENLEY SURF LIFESAVING CLUB Page 13 ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013
We should all be immensely proud to wear the red and yellow patrol uniform and incidents at both Grange and West Beach this season demonstrate that we need to remain alert and vigilant. This season, in addition to the regular patrols, we provided water cover for four open water swims, a two‐day special event (True Grit) and four SURFCOM radio room shifts. Thank you to all the members who got involved and flew the flag for Henley during these additional activities. Special mention needs to be made of Tim Cavanagh’s selfless efforts storing an IRB at his private residence and trailering it, as required, on his private trailer. Tim, your efforts were very much appreciated – thank you. In addition to running junior water cover, Roy Menner commenced a program of internal patrol proficiency checks. Roy ran out of time to visit each patrol, but I received positive feedback from the patrols which he did visit. Thanks for your efforts in increasing the professionalism of the Henley patrols this season. My last, and certainly not least, special mention must go to Andrew Henry who worked tirelessly to train more Bronze groups to fill patrols and to up skill our current members. More than anyone, Andrew suffered from the lack of a building as he, and his team of trainers, were forced to run Bronze, SRC and ARTC on the footpath and the car park. Thank you Hen – you’re a champ! As we look forward to the 2013/14 patrolling season and moving in to our new clubhouse, I urge you to meet your rostered patrolling commitments. Please don’t turn up to patrol when it suits you and then stop patrolling once you have met your minimum hours to compete. Rather, please simply meet your rostered patrol hours. See you on the beach, Pete Oborn Vice‐Captain HSLSC

With no club rooms this season surprisingly there was steady growth in membership. General membership (social membership) had the largest enquiries and growth this season. Family membership was also very popular with a growing interest in junior parents becoming patrolling members. Thank you to the membership team for hours of work entering data and working through enquires. Irene Cole as the senior registrar and Terri McCaffrey and Suzi Ashton our junior registrars. Renewal of online membership again will be strongly encouraged next season as it alleviates hours of data entry for the volunteers on the membership team. Clothing has been stored in our shed all season and has been transported most Saturdays to the clothing team on the beach. This has had its challenges and has seen Louise Howard putting many hours into sorting clothing each week in the shed to ensure it’s ready for members to purchase each Saturday. Louise Howard did a remarkable job this season and exceeded in her role as clothing coordinator. This season we included a new style and design of Engine women’s bathers. Louise and I are continuing our quest for new designs and styles over winter and we will have a brand new range next season. Thank you to the clothing team for their time and especially commitment every Saturday to help Louise on the clothing table. Trish Hogan and Linda van Remmen came every Saturday to sell clothing, sort out issues with clothing sizes and orders. This year has been busy with no clubrooms and a lovely addition to our family in Isabella but overall the season has been very productive and I feel we are slowly making some positive changes to ensure the membership and clothing area runs smoothly. Chief Instructor Training members to provide a safe beach has always been an imperative function of a surf club. Over the years, the scope of awards and requirements for the awards to remain current has grown. To continually improve our members’ knowledge and experience while having little impact on their other roles and commitments is always a challenge. For all of this to occur a very dedicated group of trainers and helpers is required. Once again a small but professional group of members achieved all of this while also ensuring they were true to their own personal commitments. Without an appropriate training facility including an undercover training area, showers, cleaning stations (sinks, taps), AV facilities, the commitment and dedication of this group must be commended. Your efforts while largely anonymous are significant in the development of our club. Each season a Chief instructor has a diverse range of responsibilities including:
Proficiencies
New award training and assessment
Training Officers
Club Life Saving Advisors (and Assessors)
Certificate IV (Training and Assessment)
Officials
PROFICIENCY Over the past few seasons several different styles of conducting proficiencies has been trialled. Each has had their own positives (and a few obstacles), however an ideal structure is still being sought. This season we conducted proficiencies for the following awards:
Surf Rescue Certificate (18)
Bronze Medallion (152)
IRB Crew (45)
IRB Driver (22)
Advanced Resuscitation Certificate (22)
Spinal Management (6)
ATV (1)
Training Officer (7)
Assessor (4) The members endorsed by SLSSA to conduct these proficiencies agreed to conduct several sessions at the start of the season. Area captains were requested to assist by ensuring members from their areas attend scheduled sessions. Ensuring proficiencies are conducted efficiently and with as little interruption to other commitments as possible is every member’s responsibility. NEW AWARD TRAINING A wide range of awards were available to club members this season. After initially training members to obtain base awards for club patrols (Surf Rescue Certificate/Bronze Medallion) our focus moved to “up skilling” current patrolling members. This is an area that constantly needs attention and where everyone can improve their own skills and knowledge. As such a large range of awards were completed this season.

This Season also saw 2 members (Matthew Chimu and Gloire Tchimala) after several years of swim training, gain their Bronze Medallion. Their dedication and determination is a credit to them, and I am certain they will be important members of our club in the future. A special thank you to Roy Menner for assisting Matthew and Gloire and providing them constant support throughout their training. TRAINING OFFICERS To be training officer there are 3 components required to complete. Firstly they need to attend classroom style session conducted by SLSSA and then perform practical training sessions observed by Club and SLSSA assessors. Once these are completed, they need to train a squad to be endorsed as a training officer in that area. While this process appears long, support and guidance is proved by other club training officers and assessors. This is an area that we need to encourage more members participate in. Congratulations to Roy Menner, Sarah Melios‐Traver, Claire Harrington and Andrew Henry on extending your training officer awards during the season. CLUB LIFESAVING ADVISORS These are members who are current assessors endorsed by SLSSA. Their responsibility is to oversee all proficiencies, training and assessment at the club and provide support where necessary. This season we were fortunate to have Four Club Lifesaving Advisors:
Roy Menner
Paul Leonard
Tony Tammita
Andrew Henry CERTIFICATE IV (TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT) This qualification assists the club in delivering other awards that previously may not have been offered at club level (Spinal management, Pain Management etc). Maintaining members with these type of qualifications will ensure we will be able to suitably train our patrolling members to cope with most situations while on patrol (or during general day to day life).

OFFICIALS As the club grows in membership so does our responsibility to provide more officials at SLSSA events. This season our small but dedicated group again ensured we completed our responsibility. Congratulations and thank you to the following members who completed their Officials accreditation during the season.
Gary Ashton
Phil Hogan
Jen Frisby‐Smith
Shelly Nelson
We are always seeking more members to assist in this area and ensure the club continues to provide sufficient officials at SLSSA events THANK YOU Water Cover (IRB and Crew) is required at all final assessments. Thank you the following members for providing water cover and ensuring our future patrolling members can concentrate on achieving their award without distraction.
Darren Hocking
Peter Oborn
Neville Fielder
Jake Fitzgerald To be the chief instructor with out extensive assistance would not be possible. As such I would also like to thank the following people for their excellent support and continued assistance.
Kate Viner (Proficiencies)
Phil Hogan (Officials)
Leah Panakera‐Thorpe (Proficiencies) and a smooth transition of Chief instructor duties.
Peter Oborn (Proficiencies, Bronze, SRC squads)
Sarah Melios‐Traver (Proficiencies, Bronze squad)
Claire Harrington (Proficiencies, Bronze, SRC squads)
Tiarne Easley (Proficiencies, Bronze, SRC and ART squads)
Tony Tammita (Proficiencies, IRB Proficiencies, CLA duties)
Paul Leonard (Proficiencies, Bronze, SRC and ART squads, Pre‐assessments, CLA Duties)
Roy Menner (Proficiencies, Bronze, SRC squads, Pre‐assessments, CLA Duties) and for your constant support over the season (good work dear!!!).
While some of our trainers have found it difficult due to work and other commitments, I and all the members of the Club sincerely thank you for you continued dedication and professionalism and look forward to working with you in the future. As the Club grows, we will need as many members as possible to ensure we continue to provide a high level of training. While this may appear to be thankless, it is extremely rewarding and I would recommend all members at least consider assisting with some member training in the future. Finally I would like to thank the management committee for their support and assistance over the season. ANDREW HENRY CHIEF INSTRUCTOR

Henley Juniors Finally we are building our new club. After over 7 years of discussions and negotiations with the local council and Government bodies we are under way and looking forward to receiving the keys in the very near future. The great thing about this season was the effort and team work put in by all our members and in particular our Juniors who have had to train without any facilities at the beach. As always out Junior committee never rest and straight after 2012 State Titles they were back together meeting regularly to review our year’s performance and review our strategy to have our Juniors achieve their next goal and again work out what we can do to improve the experience for our children at the Henley SLSC. During winter, board training, swimming training, flag training and beach training continued with numbers increasing each week. Special thanks to the coaches, Rachel Roe, Garry Ashton, Brett Roe, Andrew Henry, Steve Forrest, Andrew Lanyon and Dean Woods for running the sessions for the children. Mid year we saw for the first time in a long while a Henley team competing in the State Pool Rescue Titles and a month later at the Australian Pool Rescue Titles, both held at the Marion Aquatic Centre. What a great experience that was for our junior members, many had never competed in pool events like this before and to win a hand full of medals and make most finals that they competed in was fantastic. We must thank Leisa Moroney‐ Plouffe and Rachel Roe for looking after the kids and teaching them the skills with very short notice. The highlight of the 2 carnivals being our Henley Junior kids winning 2 Australian Titles medals
- Silver, U13 female life saving relay Maeve Moroney‐Plouffe, Siobhan Roe, Lauren Daly and Emma Dorward
- Bronze, U13 Line throw relay, Jake Butterfield and Daniel Hogan We continued to expand on one of our key strategies set previously and that was ensuring the u14’s from last year remained at the club and continued with their life saving experiences. It was great to see Quentin Dorward and Ollie Miller come back and take up to 20 kids in the u15’s for the season and with ongoing support from Sonja Smith and Dave Cassidy in the U17’s I know we are in good hands for the years ahead. The committee always knew that it would be difficult to maintain the same growth rate that we experienced in previous years due to the lack of facilities like showers and toilets for our children however at years end we were only down by 17 members so a pretty good result really for a program operated out of tents, trailers and a container. The start of the season was amazing with approximately 70 new children participating in a “come and try” day with most returning to sign up and participate weekly. Again the biggest group was our under 6, 7’s and 8’s which continues to be a great success. During the summer season we provided training in some form every night of the week with additional morning swim sessions on offer, the result of this was evident with our results at carnivals and state titles. It was great to see all the children out on the beach each night of the week and special thanks to all the parents and coaches who helped with the delivery of the sessions. Christmas was upon us very quickly and as always the big fella in the red suit continues to draw a good crowd. The kids just love this day and it is wonderful to see them all enjoying the occasion. This year we travelled interstate again in January with our children to give them the opportunity to compete with some of the best junior competitors in the country. We selected the junior carnival at Cosy Corner in Torquay where all our kids performed exceptionally well, then the next day some of our U14’s competed at the Anglesea Senior Carnival in the U15’s with some wins and top 4 finishes and great competition in nice clean surf.
HENLEY SURF LIFESAVING CLUB Page 28 ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013
Early February we continued with our major fund raiser of the year, the West Beach Community Bank Big Row, now in its seventh year where senior members of the club ranging in age from 17 to 70 row a surf boat from Stansbury to Henley Beach. This year we raised a massive $63,000 for our new club rooms, a fantastic effort. While we were in Stansbury we again conducted our junior coaching day for the 50 children from the Stansbury, Port Vincent and Edithburgh area schools who experienced the fun and challenges of Surf Life Saving. Our Training Manager Andrew Henry and Maddy Cole were able to deliver Resuscitation training to the grade 6 and 7 children, something which the teachers and parents greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Barry Cole Andrew Henry and Mark Frances who help make this session the great success it is. The pre‐qualifying and State Titles were soon with us and after a few long days on the beach we had achieved our next goal and that was to have as many of our children make the finals as possible allowing then to experience the pressure of the finals and also enjoy the team experience. This is an area we aim to improve on each year with most of our children making finals, this year we had children in 35 finals with great results, often finishing just outside the medals but still in the top 6. Overall we finished 8th with 178 points winning 22 medals, our best result for a long time in the Juniors at Henley. Our numbers at carnivals also increased with 75 of our kids competing and we are looking forward to more next year. As always the after carnival show continues to be a great time for everyone to applaud the efforts of everyone who competed and share each other’s experience and it was great to see every competitor and their family back at the Henley Football Club celebrating with the children, thank goodness Monday was the public Holiday. Congratulations to our Junior Life Savers of the Year award recipients, Maeve Moroney‐Plouffe and Daniel Hogan. Both of these Henley Juniors epitomise what Surf Life Saving is all about and we look forward to their leadership and enthusiasm around the club in the years ahead.

Carnival Officials Barrie Cole, Mark Frances, Chris Sheehy, Roy Menner, Lisa Moroney‐Plouffe, Shelly Watkin, Phil Hogan, Barry Duhne, Sandra Daly, Mitzy Dorward, Mark Frisby‐Smith, Garry Ashton and Cathy Corbett. Thanks to our regular water cover provided by our senior members and the HET crew who help each week in providing water cover and IRB cover, a fantastic effort without them we would not be able to have our children in the water at training and compete at carnivals. Again this year we were fortunate enough to have the Cole family, Barrie and Irene who each week ran our BBQ with the help of Garry Fazalari and Gary Tredrae out of the trailer and tents on the foreshore raising very valuable funds to assist with the running of our Juniors and the Club, thanks guys. And to the mums who help each week with registration and clothing sales, Trish Hogan, Linda Butterfield, Suzie Ashton, Louise Howard and Sue Frisina, the mums and dads who assisted at training sessions and carnivals during the season without any hesitation, your efforts are greatly appreciated, and without your assistance we would not be able to run our Junior program. L‐R Barrie and Irene Cole and Gary Tredrea
And of course finally thanks to the children who make it all worth while with those great big smiles and happy faces when they achieve something new or just have fun at the beach. Looking forward to next season in our new club house. PHIL HOGAN JUNIOR CHAIRPERSON

Competition Manager Report It certainly has been an exciting, busy and incredibly eventful surf season for all Henley members. During my first season as Competition Manager I have felt extremely supported and guided by all of the area captains and would like to thank each of them; Andrew Lanyon (Water), Andrew Henry (Beach), Brad Tredrea (Ski), Steve Forest (Boards), Jamie Butterfield (Boats), Jen Frisby‐Smith (Junior Representative) and our Club Captain Tom Lanyon. As a committee we met monthly to discuss the needs, hopes and dreams of our competitors, always with the vision of supporting and encouraging them to do their best, represent our club proudly and compete fairly. This season there were some administrative changes to the entry system and I thank everyone for their patience and persistence in ensuring the new process was followed correctly. As a result the Henley entries were processed without any issues which then assisted the officials in running carnivals more effectively. As one official said to me, ‘Quick marshalling equals a quick carnival.’ We should all feel incredibly proud of every Henley member who competed at local, state, national or international levels this season. We also had a range of competitors who travelled interstate to compete at Victorian and NSW carnivals. This proved to be an amazing experience; especially for the U14’s, Opens and Boat Crews who competed at Torquay and Anglesea in Victoria. Regardless of the ‘results’ our competitors always conducted themselves with the Henley spirit and have shown that wearing our club colours means more than winning gold. Congratulations to you all.

2012 Australian Pool Rescue Championships (17th – 19 August) The national event was held here in Adelaide at the YMCA Marion Aquatic and Leisure Centre and it was pleasing to see a group of 10 members represent Henley, finishing 29th overall. It was an exciting and unique experience for them to compete against the best pool competitors from around the country. Our competitors certainly gave us all something to cheer about as they participated in events such as the 100m and 200m Obstacle Race, 4 x 50m Obstacle Race, 100m Line Throw Relay, 50m Brick Carry, 100m Manikin Tow without fins, 100m Patient Tow without fins, 50m Swim No Fins, 50m Swim with Fins, 200m 4 x 50m Medley Relay. The highlight was Josh Smith swimming a time of 19.65seconds in the 50m with fins event to hold the Australian Record for a brief period of time before the final heat saw another swimmer beat this by swimming 19.28seconds. Oh so close!

2013 South Australian R&R State Titles (9th February) Henley entered an Open Men’s 5 Man R&R team this season to the State Titles. The team of Barry Cole, Dave Cassidy, Phil Hogan, Peter Mathew and Paul Martin were often seen on the beach Sunday mornings strutting their stuff and training hard for this competition. In the lead up to the State Titles they entered and won at a carnival held earlier in the season so went into this event full of confidence. They certainly gave it everything they had but unfortunately due to an equipment malfunction with the belt, their endeavour to bring home a medal was over. Fortunately for Henley this has only made the team even more committed and inspired to try again next season. They are also keen to assist others with the help of Roy Menner in developing several Henley R&R Teams. Fantastic news for our club and it will be great to see more teams wearing our club colours proudly on the beach. 2013 South Australian Masters Championships (16th, 23rd ‐ 24th February) Competition at Moana for these Championships involved a large representation from Henley. It was great to see our Masters giving it their best with some excellent results, finishing 6th overall. An impressive and outstanding 45 medals were won by our Masters at the Championships and many 4th ‐ 6th positions were also achieved. What an exceptional effort by everyone, congratulations.

2013 South Australian Senior State Championships (16th and 17th March) South Port once again delivered a variety of conditions for all competitors with competition on Saturday being postponed in the afternoon to continue on Sunday due to unsafe water conditions. Henley was represented well in all areas and finished 10th overall. It was fantastic to see a wonderful group of our U14 competitors teaming up with our U15’s at their first Senior State Titles. Congratulations to Josh Smith winning a total of 3 medals, silver (Tube Race) and two bronze medals (Surf Race and Taplin), Sax Bates winning a silver (2km Run), Maeve Moroney‐Plouffe winning a silver (Tube Race), Sean Dedai winning a bronze (Taplin) and Ethan Miller also winning a bronze (Taplin). All of the results were fantastic but a special mention to the U19 Taplin Relay team where the team consisted of one U15, U17 and U19 competitor. It has been over 20 years since Henley won any Taplin Relay medal in all age groups, excluding Masters. Well done boys! The results below show promising things for next year’s championships. It was a great effort by everyone, with many 4th ‐ 6th placings. The Surf Boats showed our club’s strength in this area winning a total of 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze medals. 2013 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (15th ‐ 21st April) Henley finished 54th in both the Masters and Open categories at the Aussie Titles. We had 22 members travel to compete at Aussies in the single and double skis, flags, beach sprints, 2km run and surf boats.
This was Lindy Lewis’s first Aussie Masters and it was a pretty good one. After a sudden change to the schedule the 30‐34 sprint race was called with most not fully warmed up, Lindy finished 3rd, not quite able to catch 2nd place. The next day were flags, Lindy’s favourite event, knocking each competitor out one by one before finally edging out the girl from Bondi for the Gold medal. Congratulations Lindy bringing home 2 medals, what an incredible achievement. Well done. Scott Robinson, Greg Fletcher and Damien Grant from the ski area had a much tougher field and had to battle the tricky surf conditions. Scott & Greg finished 3rd and 4th in their quarter‐finals of the 40‐44 single ski, with Greg going on to make the final. Both then teamed up in the Double Ski event and finished an awesome 1st in their semi‐final, but were unable to back it up in the Final. Damien competed in the 35‐39 single ski and all 3 teamed up for the 110yr ski relay. Lindy and the ski boys celebrated with a BBQ at the North Kirra Tourist Park at the conclusion of the event. Our medallist this year at the Australian Titles was: GOLD Womens 30‐34 Beach Flags Lindy Lewis

I would especially like to thank Tara McElhinney and Scott Robinson for kindly volunteering to be the Team Managers at this year’s event. They both conducted themselves professionally and with a high degree of integrity both before and during the event.

Some Final Thoughts I would like to thank the Management Committee for making me feel so welcome. Your knowledge, expertise and support during the season were much appreciated. A personal thank you to Neville Fielder (Club President) and Phil Hogan (Junior Chairperson), because without people like this my role would certainly be a lot more difficult. As our club grows so must the number of people involved in volunteering to actively assist our members. Next season we will be strongly encouraging individuals to become officials, team managers, and coaches. We will need people to assist at carnivals, transport equipment to and from carnivals and volunteer to assist at our own Club Championships. We are all volunteers, but remember ‘Many hands make light work’. It is definitely exciting times ahead for Henley. Other clubs are watching us closely, our HET group continues to grow and develop, we have amazing juniors eager to join the senior ranks, the boat area continues to go from strength to strength, the board area has significantly increased in competitors and with our new club rooms providing easier access to training facilities including craft, the ski and beach areas will also soon begin to show significant growth. Henley is also very excited about further developing R&R teams in a range of age groups and hopefully a Senior and Masters march past team could also be seen on the beaches in the very near future. If we continue to provide the best possible environment for all of our members, including non‐competitive members, to ensure they feel valued, safe and part of the Henley community we will continue to grow and be the best we can be! Water Area Weekly Surf Races The weekly Saturday swims continued to be very well supported this season. We had an average of 42 swimmers each week over the 15 swims and an excellent maximum of 65 on February 9th. A total of 130 members did at least one swim and well done to Siobhan Roe the only member to do every weekly swim. Points were awarded each week for participation (2 points) with bonus points for the first 6 places on handicap (6 down to 1). The top 20 are in the table below. Trophies were awarded to the points score winners in the combined open and masters and combined U15 to U19 categories. Congratulations to the winners: Brett Roe, Beck Forest, Ryan Froud and Anina D’Amico. Swim Training Our swim training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Immanuel College pool are continuing to be well supported with about 30 members attending each night during the summer months and a few less during the off season. Competitions Water area competition traditionally includes the swimming events of surf swim race, rescue tube race, belt race and surf teams plus the multidiscipline events of board rescue, ironman, Taplin relay and Cameron relay, but the new disciplines of the pool rescue events are now also available to test our skills and fitness. Pool Rescue Events The State and Australian Pool Rescue championships were held in Adelaide at the State Aquatic Centre in July and August. Henley had a team comprising U13, U14, U15 and U17 members who worked hard prior to the events to learn these new events and improve their skills to a competitive level. Our team performed very well winning several medals and achieving many high placings. World Championships The ocean competitions got off to an early start with Adelaide hosting the World Championships at Christies Beach in November. The carnival started with masters’ events in good weather and strong surf conditions. Henley were represented in various Masters surf swim, board rescue, Taplin relay and ironman events by John Ellice‐Flint, Dean Woods, Steve Forest, Pam Gunn and Andrew Lanyon and in Open women’s surf race by Hayley Grosser. The competition was of a very high standard and our team performed very well making a number of finals. Senior Carnivals and Senior State Championships A large team of under‐15s represented Henley in the U15 water events at carnivals and State Championships. This saw us field competitors in every U15 water event at States, which included surf swim, board rescue, Cameron relay, ironman/women and surf teams. A big thank you to the age group leaders and parents for their encouragement and support to the under 15s. Australia Day Masters carnival at Brighton One male team and one female team (4 per team) took part in the second running of this now annual carnival consisting of 6 team events including some standard and some non‐standard. This was a good practice hit out prior to State Titles and well done to all who took part.

One the highlights for our team at state
titles was the U19 Taplin relay team,
consisting of board paddler Ethan

and ski paddler Sean Dedai (U19) who all
performed above expectations to earn a

Masters State Championships It was great to see a further increase in our number of Masters Competitors in both male and female contingents. There were several first time water area competitors including Catherine Booth and Rachael Tredrea who both brought home gold medals. Many members won medals and all who finished in 1st to 6th places scored points towards our overall score which finished at a 10% improvement of last year and easily our best ever. Thank you to all who represented Henley, congratulations to all of our medallists and point scorers and above all, well done to all those who are newcomers to lifesaving competition and have had to work hard to develop their skill and fitness levels in order to take part. Finally, thank you to members who worked as officials to fulfil our quotas at all of the above competition events. Your efforts are much appreciated. ANDREW LANYON WATER CAPTAIN

Ski Area This season, the number of ski paddlers dropped off due to major injuries, increased work commitments and the club re‐build. Although there were small groups still getting in quality training there was never the consistency of the previous season. In November, we had a small group that represented Henley at Rescue 2012 with Greg Fletcher “Fletch” coming in 7th in the 40‐44 years Single Ski final, and then teaming up with Scott Robinson “Robbo” and Matteo Simone for 4th place in the 110 years Ski Relay, as the pick of the results. As in previous seasons, Henley ski paddlers continued to produce some consistent results at State Masters Titles. Our best result came from Scott Robinson and Damien Grant with a silver medal in the 35‐39 years Men’s Double Ski, and Single Ski bronze medals to Lindy Lewis and Andrew Lanyon in their respective age groups. Other notable results just out of the medals were 4th place results for Kathryn Vogt (Single Ski), Scott Robinson (Single Ski) and both Men and Women’s 110 years Ski Relay teams. At Senior State Titles, Sean Dedai continued to show the way as our most impressive paddler. A most respectable 6th place in the U19 Men’s Single Ski was followed by Sean paddling the ski leg of the Bronze medal winning U19 Taplin Relay team. In regard to our open paddlers, Scott Robinson just missed the final of the Open Single Ski, bowing out in the Semi Finals. With a new club on the horizon, experienced paddlers returning for another crack and some new equipment purchased through our generous sponsors, Commonwealth Bank and Flinders Ports, the 2013/14 season should see the Henley Ski Squad build up our numbers again. The ski area will look to capitalise on the great work done by the Henley Juniors and get the U15 and U17 group on skis and enjoy paddling in the surf. I would also like to thank Sonja Smith for her tireless work as the club’s Competition Manager, Mark Travers for chasing up sponsorship requests and Tom Lanyon for helping out while my work commitments limited the time I could put into the role of Ski Captain. Board Area Wow what a year! It’s been a very long season this year with World championships starting in November, which meant an early start to training and finishing just recently with Aussies. Having no club rooms has tested us all with extra effort getting to and from training and carnivals but everyone has pitched in whenever needed. These challenges have not affected our turnout to training with all sessions having even greater attendance and enthusiasm than last year. We have also seen greater numbers than ever before enjoying paddling. This has been across all ages from masters down to the new U14’s who have just started. Many have purchased their own boards and others are now planning to. This has helped take the strain off of our club boards which have had a lot of damage from all the transportation over the season. We have upped the intensity of training again from last year and everyone who has attended these sessions has seen improvements in their results at competitions. Seniors States was a great success with several medals and many progressing into finals. Some of these finalists were still only U14! Masters has seen the most growth again. There were so many new competitors trying things for the first time and doing very well. It was a great day with nearly everyone who competed achieving medals or getting through to finals. We also started a Facebook page for the board area, which has helped keep everyone in touch for both training, social paddles and sharing great photos. I would like to thank everyone who has helped throughout the year. Without this support we would not have done as well. I know the U14s technically do not come under this area but I have to commend the commitment, attitude and dedication that have given these young kids such great results. Well done. Look out for next year as we have another group of keen U14s coming up. With a solid winter training again we can only improve on last year’s excellent results. We have already had a few people committed to Aussies next year and it’s looking like we will be having one of Henley’s largest groups for many years. And we thought last year was exciting. Beach Area With beach training sessions changing regularly and attendance not consistent in the immediate past, several changes to training times/locations were trialled. The aim was to provide a professional and constant training program to encourage members’ involvement in beach events, setting training programs for 3 specific events. * Rescue 2012 * State titles (masters/senior/junior) * Australian titles Training commenced in early July, with several members in attendance primarily looking at Rescue 2012. By the middle of November (after the conclusion of rescue 2012), other personal commitments and distractions resulted in some scheduled sessions cancelled and unfortunately enthusiasm dwindled. This resulted in minimal participation at carnivals. Closer to State titles, interest again increased. This was pleasing, however to achieve potential and individual/team goals, a commitment to training and improvement over an extended time is required. This issue has been addressed and should be rectified in the future. There were however some outstanding achievements during the season. RESCUE 2012 Several members juggled many other commitments and obligations to commit to the event and to attend training. Numbers varied week to week however the experience and teamwork gained was extremely beneficial. This group should be extremely proud of their achievements, including winning 3 medals and a 5th place. Congratulations to Lindy Lewis and Gary Ashton on winning Bronze Medals in their age groups flags and sprint respectively and to Lindy, Kat Vogt and Nikki Von Bertouch on Bronze in the 90+ Women’s Beach Relay (even after a dropped baton! oops sorry shouldn’t have mentioned that). STATE TITLES – MASTERS Each season a new group of members are introduced to Masters Competition and this season was no exception. With a mix of new and experienced members once again many great results were achieved. The beach area won 17 medals including 5 Gold medallions contributing over 100 points in the 3 individual events (flags, sprint, 1km or 2km run) and beach relay. Special mentions to Gary Ashton (2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze), Lindy Lewis (2 gold and a silver) and Rick Daley (1 gold and 2 bronze) for once again leading the way in the beach area. Also congratulations to James Corbett and Catherine Booth on winning medals in their first year competing. STATE TITLES ‐ SENIORS Our involvement at States titles was mainly in the U15 area with most competitors having their first taste of senior states. While no medals were achieved the experience will be enormous for next season. There are several members in this age group who, with appropriate commitment, guidance and training will be outstanding competitors in the future.

AUSTRALIAN TITLES While we did not send a “beach team” to the Australian titles this season, Lindy Lewis again travelled to Queensland to represent the club, winning 2 medals (gold in sprint and bronze in flags). Currently there is a group of young members who have the potential to achieve results similar to Lindy in the future. We need to capitalise on Lindys experience and expertise to provide the next generation with the skills and knowledge necessary for similar success. THANK YOU Firstly, I would like to thank Lindy Lewis and Nikki Von Bertouch for their assistance and support throughout the season and also with the conduct of training in my absence. To give the young members of our club the best opportunity to reach their potential extra assistance with coaching and coordination would be greatly appreciated by all involved. Secondly, I would like to thank the other area captains for their support. While some discussions could be described as robust, the knowledge that we are all searching for the same outcome is very encouraging. Finally, I would like to thank Sonja Smith for her outstanding effort as the Competition manager. With Sonja’s excellent leadership and support, area captains now can be certain that the club as a whole will continue to develop, and provide every opportunity to the members. IRB Area
IRBs continue to be an important and integral part of surf lifesaving activities and a continuous supply of new drivers and crew cannot be overstated. Having said that, 7 members gained their drivers silver medallion and 19 members gained their IRB crew certificate this season thanks mainly to the efforts of Tony Tammita who was ably assisted by Hannah Sitters and Nick Travers who were in the first group to gain their IRB drivers this season. Paul Leonard also gained his IRB training officers award. At the time of writing this report 4 new drivers are in training and 8 members have their names down for the next squad. Kevin Fitzgerald also informed me that he has quite a list of members wanting to do their boat operators licence on offer at the Glenelg SLSC. The start of this season saw some changes in the IRB setup and operation. Due to a spate of right foot injuries in IRBs the main changers were the removal of the crew right foot strap and the crew lock in position. Any driver or crew qualified member who did not do their proficiency this season will find that their award will have lapsed and they will have to regain the qualifications in future seasons. Another change this season saw the requirement of IRB water coverage when competition craft have training sessions in larger seas on the south coast. The safety aspects of this are obvious and although it puts extra strain on equipment and resources, I can see huge positives in crews gaining valuable experience in surf conditions while carrying out a function. From the equipment point of view the Adelaide Airport hull that was donated last year arrived and was put into operation, the BP hull had repairs done plus ‘V’ strakes added so we now have three Achilles hulls that operate and handle in a similar fashion. The future of the zodiac hull will have to be decided. The three Yamaha outboards performed reasonably well with just a few hic ups that were quickly rectified. The future of outboard replacement will see us go to mercury motors but this won’t happen without some really good sponsorship and/or grants, due to our focus on the club house rebuild next season and beyond. I made some effort this season to remind patrol captains and IRB drivers that the IRB log needs to be filled out after each IRB operation. From a patrol prospective this was carried out reasonably well, but in the other areas where the IRB’S were used it was very poor. Please fill in the log book with all relevant information. Looking forward, I am not without some trepidation as to how well we will operate the IRB’s next season, from a container positioned somewhere down near the beach. It wasn’t ideal but there was something cosy about ‘the cave’. In the mean time I would like to thank Tim Cavanagh for storing an operational IRB on a trailer at his place. Thanks also to all other members who assisted with IRB operations throughout the season. SHANE JOHNS IRB & RADIO OFFICER

* Editors Note – the IRB report was mistakenly omitted from the Annual Report so it is being included in this year’s report.
IRB Area 2011/2012 IRBs continue to be an important and integral part of surf lifesaving activities and a continuous supply of new drivers and crew cannot be overstated. Due to a spate of right foot injuries in IRBs the main changes were the removal of the crew right foot strap and the crew lock in position. From the equipment point of view the Adelaide Airport hull that was donated last year finally arrived and was put into operation, the BP hull had repairs done plus ‘V’ strakes added so we now have three Achilles hulls that operate and handle in a similar fashion. Surfboat Area We have a strong culture of family and community within the boat area and it is important that this culture is maintained into the future to ensure the ongoing success and achievement of the goals we have set. The surf boat panel completed the annual SWOT analysis meeting involving all rowers at the completion of the 2012 season to review our achievements from a five year plan set in 2009 and to set new realistic achievable goals for 2012‐13 (goal setting and review is now an annual occurrence), enabling the boat area to improve all facets of our operations from recruiting, strength and conditioning, coaching and performance goals at local and interstate competition. Thanks to Peter Oborn who facilitated this. The results from our all crews at interstate carnivals set the benchmark with credit from coaches, administrators and the athletes pulling the oars. The boat panel is on track with our members’ commitment to reaching our five year plan. Examples of goals achieved are listed below and see Henley SLSC leading the way in SA.
Coordinated structured training programs, strength /fitness/technique/surf skills.
Develop alliance with other clubs and communities.
Access to specialised coaching resources within the club.
Knowledge and utilisation of existing member’s skills.
Continued enhanced reputation, within SA and nationally as a respected competitive club.
Develop a sense of commitment to your crew, the club and surfboat rowing. RESCUE 2012 The World Titles were held at Christies Beach on 15th November 2012. Our crews were at a high level of fitness very early in the season and we were on track for a successful season. It was going to be a long season and athletes would have to be managed carefully to avoid fatigue over the season of competition to the Australian Titles. Congratulations to all the Henley crews that took part in the World Titles and trained throughout the winter to be in form for Worlds. Christies Beach produced a big wave at the gate cans that had a lot of crews from all over Australia wiping out in spectacular form. Congratulations to the Masters Women “Hurricanes” who were rewarded for their dedicated winter training with a silver medal world title in the masters 140s women. The “Pirates” and “Strikers” rowed neck and neck in the U23 women’s competition and congratulations to the “Pirates” who won a bronze world title medal in U23 women. Congratulations to the “Royals” U19 men’s crew won bronze against strong interstate competition at world titles. INTERSTATE CARNIVALS The crews were also committed to tours interstate to the ASRL Open in Stockton NSW, Young Guns in Collaroy NSW, Clifton Beach Tasmania, Angelsea and Warnambool in Victoria. Three crews had State team commitments in at the Navy Cup ASRL Open. The focus for the first three carnivals was to win the navy cup series of carnivals to gain state team selection for crews. The ASRLSA held a carnival at Robe on the 1st and 2nd of December at 12 mile beach in the southeast of South Australia. The beach is a fantastic white sandy beach and surf that is very suitable for boat carnivals. Thanks Mark “Spider” Searcy and Gary Fazzalari for organising and accommodating the clubbies again. The Robe
HENLEY SURF LIFESAVING CLUB Page 50 ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013
surf was a “fair dinkum” shore break that was not to be taken lightly! The carnival was excellent experience and very challenging for all crews which resulted in some gear damage and a couple of minor injuries. Henley remains a club that will support, promote and attend “surf competition” and regional initiatives such as this carnival at Robe. STATE REPRESENTAION
Congratulations to the crews selected to be
the State Teams: “Pirates” U23 women,
“Dirtybirds” U23 men and “Royals” U19 men.
These crews were given the honour of
representing the state at the ASRL open (held
in Stockton NSW). The interstate boat team
won gold in the relay against the might of
NSW and QLD crews for the first time in
history, truly an amazing victory in surf
conditions with HSLC making up 50% of the
SA team.
YOUNG GUNS
Clifton Beach ‐ The “Pirates” and “Colts”
travelled to Clifton beach in Tasmania in
December to compete at the young guns
carnival. Congratulations to the pirates came
second in the final. The “Dirtybirds” came
fourth in the U23 final and also made the
open men’s final.
Collaroy The “Strikers” competed at Collaroy
in January for the Young Guns carnival and
reached quarter finals in a very competitive
field of interstate clubs. In preparation for
Collaroy the “strikers” travelled to Anglesea
and got 2nd overall in the U23s and made the
open women’s final in one of their best
performances of the season in stormy surf.
Manly ‐ The pirates competed at the Manly
carnival in February, finishing 4th in a very
close final after winning the semi.
The Henley open men travelled to Warnambool to compete in the Victorian series and finished with a second place.
HENLEY SURF LIFESAVING CLUB Page 51 ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013
MASTERS STATE championships were held at Moana on the 23rd of February. Henley SLSC had a large club representation on the beach in more ways than one! With club stalwarts Barrie Cole, Phil Hogan, Jamie Butterfield, Kevin Fitzgerald, Darren Hocking and Scott Mather all donned the smugglers once again. Unfortunately Trevor Mulvihill and Barrie Duhne’s 260 yrs “Fossils” announced their crews retirement after their innovative new headfirst jump ins didn’t come off at the world titles earlier in the season. The competition is always competitive and in good spirit. Several masters’ crews were very fit from their training programs and were rewarded with medal honours. Congratulations to the Hurricanes 140 masters women for a super effort following on from their world title silver medal winning gold at the states masters. The Rollicks also were superb all season and trained very hard to win a gold medal in the 160s masters women. The Henley Masters women have taken all before them the past two seasons as clear leaders of the competition. The Big Row was held on the 2nd of February. The gulf crossing was a major event for the club and vital bonding and training for the crews. I would like thank Kevin Renfrey, Rob Gerard, John Butterfield and 1st mate Leigh Causby, Gavin Stagg, John Hatwell, the SAMFS “fire boat display” for not only volunteering the vital infrastructure that’s creates the event ,their hospitality on their craft and looking after the participants is exceptional . AUSTRALIAN TITLES Thank you to Tara McElhinney for accepting the team manager’s role at the Australian Titles and smashing it! Tara issued an Aussie titles handbook for all attendees with arrivals, departures, maps, communications, contact numbers, accommodation details. However “BBQ” Barrie Cole did notice there was no list of recommended local bakeries! Thanks Tara. Henley entered the U23 women pirates , reserves men “Mackdogs”, open women “Stingers” , open women composite crew of the “Pirates/Strikers” to compete in the titles at the Gold Coast Queensland from the 15th April to the 21st of April. The U23 women “Pirates” made the quarter finals. This strong crew are very close to a final and medal chance at national level. The open women “Stingers” made quarter finals in a great effort in their first season together. The reserves men “Mackdogs” made quarter finals and have been impressive in their first full season together. The U23 composite crew rowed competitively in open women and gained valuable experience. Thank you to Kevin Fitzgerald, Darren Hocking, and Brad Vogt for working on the boats and rigging oars. The repair work on the trailer and boat after the road accident travelling to Stockton showed the skilled people we have in our club! For the boat to still compete in the carnival just days after a severe breakdown of the trailer and eventual rollover of the boat trailer caused considerable serious damage to the Clipsal boat’s hull and gunwale of the surfboat. Thanks to Brad and Kathryn Vogt for ergo coaching, and setting up boat and ergo booking system and opening their home for ergo training. Thanks to the sweeps who have towed boats to interstate carnivals (Kathryn & Brad Vogt, Darren Hocking) and thanks to those who have towed trailers to carnivals and training to the south coast (Gary Fazzalari, Jake Fitzgerald and Dan Murdock, Jamie Butterfield, Jim Plouffe, Kevin Fitzgerald, Darren Hocking & Brad Vogt). Thanks to the strength and conditioning coaches Gary Fazzalari and Gary Tredrea for their dedicated coaching, Brad Vogt and Katie Cavanagh (ergo) training has made a great change to our interstate competition with the
HENLEY SURF LIFESAVING CLUB Page 52 ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013
strength and fitness programs. Thanks from all the rowers for the time and encouragement and mentoring you give our competitors. Thanks to Rae Lawson for her role as surf boats coordinator. Rae is invaluable in the boat area team improving communication with the members, compiling entries and assisting with all areas of boat panel administration with the boat captain and while also committing to her rowing. Congratulations on your award Lifesaver of the Year. Congratulations to Brad Vogt for winning Most Enthusiastic in the Boat Area. Your dedication has been appreciated by everyone. Thanks also to Sonja Smith for completing our interstate and local carnival entries that is quite a workload with so many crews and personnel changes. I thank the committee for supporting the planned improvements in equipment including the purchase of the Clymer surfboat this season proudly named the “Rose and Alan Nelson”. The boat has been an important part of our competitive edge, having two premier equipped racing surfboats. The boat panel pushed to have a competitive crew in open men and women. The “Mackdogs” and “Stingers” must be congratulated for putting Henley back on the podium with two bronze state medals in tough open competition and competing strongly interstate. The Henley success has come from a group of clubbies ranging from long term and new members, sweeps, coaches, junior members moving up the ranks that show so much maturity and commitment to training and enjoying their club. The vibe becomes infectious, squad training in the gym is enjoyable, and the boaties enjoy and look forward to competing on the beach together and showing our proud club colours. I am really proud our members method in the way they focused on their lifesaving during 2012/13 There was no mention of logistics being difficult without a clubhouse/gymnasium at any time they just concentrated on their commitment . Compliments go to the committee for managing the club during this season under difficult circumstances. The storage yard was secure and well organised and was a strong foresight to secure a workable premises during the rebuilding process. The 2013/14 season will be exciting with the new clubhouse and challenging for our crews as we aim to continue to learn and be sustainable competing at the elite level, make finals in the Australian Open and Australian Titles. The surf boat members have a huge challenge to fundraise, support the new clubhouse and find sponsorship to further improve our craft and equipment to for fill our goals in the future. The boat area is committed to compete and win at the highest level and continue to respect our commitments, responsibilities and loyalty to the Henley Surf Life Saving Club. The West Beach Community Bank Big Row 2013 On the 2nd February 2013, the Henley SLSC conducted their 7th annual Big Row, crossing the 68km from Stansbury on the Yorke Peninsula to Henley Beach, fundraising over $63,000 for the surf club. In stark contrast to last year’s event, the crossing was held in what Safety Officer, Kevin Fitzgerald described as “Probably one of the hardest crossings endured because of the tide, wind and swell working against us the whole way”. The row started into a cross chop and head wind, and Shannon Asa the Big Row First Aid Officer, was kept very busy attending to several cases of sea sickness and extreme blisters. Kevin and the Katriana II Skipper, John Butterfield, were required to continually conduct risk assessments to ensure the safety of the row, requiring adjustments to crew personnel and shorter crew change overs to guarantee that the crossing would be completed within the estimated timeframe. After such an eventful crossing, the organising committee and club members on the beach were very pleased to see the surf boat come into sight at 1:30pm, to be greeted with a water bridge from the SAMFS fire boat, the ‘Gallantry’. The finishing crew of Brad Vogt (sweep), Nick Ruygrok (first stroke), Peter Oborn (second stroke), Rae Lawson (second bow), Manu Ortiz (bow) and Olivia Parker (mascot), selected by the organising committee for their contributions throughout the season, arrived back on shore to a stirring reception from a large crowd of club members, juniors and general public. All agreed they were glad to be back on solid ground and were very excited to partake of the tasty pizza supplied by club sponsor ‘Crust’!

Our junior lifesaving school program moved onwards an upwards this year, under the direction of Junior Coordinator Phil Hogan and ‘Mr BBQ’, Barrie Cole. This year we extended our educational program to Edithburgh and Port Vincent Primary Schools, with a total of 50 children taking part. Andrew Henry, Chief Instructor, coordinated a contingent of rowers, junior helpers and club members to deliver the session which, by all accounts, was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students. As in previous years, the year 6 and 7 students from Stansbury School gained their Resuscitation Certificates, an achievement they can be proud of.

Jane Dewar relinquished her position as the Big Row Coordinator this year and convinced me to take on the role for the 2013 event. I would like to thank Jane, who has held the position for the previous 6 events, for her guidance and mentorship. Jane who is also the Sponsorship Coordinator, will be retiring from this role also. The Big Row committee will be canvassing for interest in this role for the 2014 Big Row, a fantastic opportunity for a clubbie or club supporter to achieve great things for their club and community. To plan, coordinate and execute the Big Row each year requires great effort and would not be possible without the individual strengths and experience that each member of the Big Row committee brings. I would like to extend a special thanks to Jane Dewar, Kevin Fitzgerald and Katheryn Curnow for their insight and generosity in assisting me with my first Big Row. A special mention also goes to Sue Fitzgerald, Karen “Kasbah” Lewis and Katheryn Curnow, for spending 6 hours on the day of the Big Row preparing the gourmet sandwiches provided at the after party. It took a bit longer than expected, but they got there in the end! This year we also engaged a very capable and helpful group to attend to our sponsors at the after party. Thanks to Linda Butterfield, Louise Howard, Trish Hogan, Suzie Gitsham, Irene Cole, Neil “Chook” Barratt and Steve “Horse” Horsman for carrying out these duties. Well done to all rowers, support crews, club members, after party helpers, junior helpers, committee members, support vessel crews and sponsors, for once again being a part of a successful Big Row. I look forward to an even bigger and better event in 2014 and the first of many in our new club! CARLY LUTZE BIG ROW COORDINATOR

Finance Report The overall financial position of the club has continued to be maintained in the 2012‐13 operating year. The closing cash position for the Club as at 30 April 2013 was $838,697 which included a balance in the operating account of $42,672, $109,062 in the other investment accounts maintained by the club, with the balance ($686,888) held on trust for the Club by SLSSA for use on the building development. The total figure recorded as at 30 April was above the opening balance of $314,873. This increase in the overall cash position is explained by the following main reasons:
increased membership income,
the impact of the Big Row and other fundraising event, and
funds borrowed to fund building development Capital Expenditure: During the year the Club incurred expenditure on capital items (assets) totaling $1,056,793 ($21,343 in 2011/12). The items purchased included: Capital costs associated with the new Building $1,011,458 New Equipment: Plant and Equipment $1,522 Competition/Lifesaving Equipment (Boards, skis, etc.,) $38,524 Surf Boat Equipment $5,281 The equipment purchase decisions made during the year have taken into account the need to ensure that the core activities of the Club are supported. The equipment purchases made have been directly offset by various grants and sponsorships received during the year in addition to the application of the equipment funding levy introduced for 2013 (which raised $10,830). Seeking specific direct sponsorship for equipment is being actively pursued to ensure that the Club can continue to support equipment requirements into the future. As at 30 April the total book value of assets reported was $1,610,748 ($570,023 in 2012) consisting of the Building totally $1,424,429 ($412,970) and Plant & Equipment $186,319 ($157,053). Operating income for the year was $237,699 which was below that figure of $325,338 received in 2011‐12. The result is largely explained by:
Reduced Trading outcome due to no bar activity ($25,090 down from $66,582)
Grants, Sponsors and Fundraising ($135,533 down from $204,048)
Membership / Levy contribution ($57,736 up from $48,270)
Sundry and Other Income ($15,736 up from $1,559) It is noted that the membership figure includes the Building Fund Levy which amounted to a figure of $10,370 in 2012‐13 (total collected equates to $50,070) and the Equipment Levy which equated to a figure of $10,830 in 2012‐13. These funds were used in a variety of outcomes including:
Lifesavings – administration, training and operations ($36,470)
General Operation ($16,665)
Building maintenance and operations ($16,069) The net operating result of the Club for 2012‐13 was $1,130,623. This result is reduced after taking in account the building funding specifically received to fund the development of the new building of $1,010,186 to an operating
HENLEY SURF LIFESAVING CLUB Page 61 ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013
profit result of $120,437 ($190,508 in 2011‐12). This result was less than that achieved in the previous year of largely due to no trading from the bar and the additional interest charges applied. Included within this result was the trading account (Clothing only in 2012‐13) result of a Gross Profit of $4,736. The retention of a strong cash position has been a focus for the Committee given the need to retain funds to ensure that the long term financial position of the Club is strong and the committee has worked diligently towards this objective. The Committee continues to review capital expenditure in line with the endorsed 5 year capital plan to ensure that the Club’s equipment is maintained at an appropriate level and to also keep up with the demand given the increasingly strong membership base. The building project adds financial pressure in relation to the need to service and repay the level of borrowing ($400,000) required as a result of the project. Income from club activities to support the funding requirements of the Club is derived from 4 key areas:
Membership – 24% (15% in 2011‐12)
Trading Activities – 10% (20% in 2011‐12)
Grants and Fundraising – 58% (63% in 2011‐12)
Other – 6% (2% in 2011‐12) As indicated above the strong membership base of the Club continues to provide a strong financial base to support the ongoing operations of the club. The Big Row continues to be the key fundraising initiative for the Club. Sponsorships are also an important fundraising component and all sponsors should be congratulated for their invaluable and generous support of the Club. Grants made available by the Local Council, State Government and Federal Government are also critical. The Club also undertook a Wine Drive fundraiser during the year. This generated sales of $6,600 and it is anticipated that further benefits will be derived from this initiative as the balance of wine available is sold during 2013‐14. The club (and its finances) has again been well served by those members who put in an enormous amount of time on Grant applications, organizing the Big Row and raising funds through the BBQ on Saturdays, Bunning BBQ and other. Without your time, effort and in some cases contacts, the Clubs’ financial position would not be as strong as it is. Well done! All these areas need to remain a strong focus for the Committee in coming years and that continued support from members will be required. The Club has over the past several years continued to maintain a solid financial base to enable it to move forward with the building project. Now with that project almost completed the task changes to one of reducing the financial commitment that has been made by the club through the repayment of the borrowing. This financial commitment is significant and the on‐going support of all Members will be essential in maintaining our strong financial position moving forward. The report is provided for the consideration of Members. MARK TRAVERS, FINANCE MANAGER

Auditor’s Report To the Members of Henley Surf Life Saving Club Inc. SCOPE I have audited the financial report being the Statement of Financial Performance, Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Cash Flows, Notes to the Financial Statements and the Statement by members of the Committee of Henley Surf Life Saving Club Inc. set out on pages 62 to 66 for the year ended 30 April 2013. The Committee is responsible for the financial report. I have conducted an independent audit of the financial report in order to express an opinion on it to the members of the Club. My audit has been conducted in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards to provide reasonable assurance as to whether the financial report is free of material misstatement. My procedures included examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial report and the evaluation of accounting policies and significant accounting estimates. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion as to whether, in all material respects, the financial report is presented fairly in accordance with applicable Australian Accounting Standards and other mandatory professional reporting requirements so as to present a view which is consistent with our understanding of the Club’s financial position, the results of its operations and cash flows. The audit opinion expressed has been formed on the above basis. QUALIFICATION Given the nature of the operations of the Henley Surf Life Saving Club inc. it is not practicable to establish accounting controls over all amounts receivable prior to the issue of a cash receipt and therefore it is not possible to know whether all income due to the Club has been received by the Club and recorded in the books of account. Accordingly, my audit has been limited to the amounts of cash receipts recorded in the books of account of the Club. AUDIT OPINION In my opinion, subject to the above qualification, the financial report presents fairly in accordance with the applicable Australian Accounting Standards and other mandatory professional reporting requirements the financial position of Henley Surf Life Saving Cub Inc., as at 30 April 2013, and the results of its operations and cash flows for the year then ended.

True Grit 2013 On the weekend of 11th and 12th May 2013, nine Henley Bronze Medallion holders provided water cover to the inaugural ‘True Grit’ event, just outside Waikerie, on the Murray River in the Riverland. True Grit is a military inspired obstacle course, consisting of a trail run of 12km with 32 challenging obstacles to tackle enroute. The Waikerie event was the first of its kind, designed and run by members of the Australian elite Special Forces. The event proved to be an overwhelming success with 5000 participants challenging themselves on the muddy course throughout the weekend. The following Henley members, camped for two nights in the Riverland, provided water cover (in the cold Murray River) and first aid at four of the 32 obstacles.

It was an unusual sight, seeing two Surf Rescue boards on the Murray River in the Australian bush! For many, it was an interesting insight into the way the Special Forces approach a potentially dangerous activity. The level of professionalism and organisation was second to none. The event raised the profile of the club with the organisers, who indicated that they will be very happy to approach Henley again, for future events. Not only did we have a lot of fun, but a $2,400 donation was made to the club. PETE OBORN VICE‐CAPTAIN

The club has sadly lost one of its members, John Coorey, a true gentleman and family man. John had been involved with the club for many years starting when his three children Katherine, Matthew and Liana joined as juniors. John was a patrol member, Honorary Member, an Age Group Leader and throughout the years an official for the club at both junior and senior carnivals. John was a quiet man and would help out within the club wherever he could ‐ from cooking the BBQ for Nippers on a Saturday afternoon to maintenance work around the club, with repairs to the trailers and equipment. Nothing was ever too much trouble, John was always happy to assist where he could. John lost his fight to cancer and he will be sadly missed by the Henley SLSC members. Rest in Peace John. We will miss your generous nature and smiling face.

Naming the new Surf Boat ‐“Alan and Rose Nelson: The Nelly”
The club bought a second hand surfboat from St Kilda SLSC in
Melbourne and had the pleasure to name it
“Alan and Rose ‘Nelly’ Nelson”
Alan and Rose have both been long standing supporters of the
club, Alan being awarded life membership in 1980. Alan was a
committee member for four seasons between 1965 and 1982, Club
Captain in 1966, Junior Club Captain in 1963, and Bar Manager for
3 years from 1978 to 1980.
Rose took on an active role in the club spending many years on the Club Auxillary and other support roles including club photographer and club historian. Kevin Fitzgerald was MC with Paul Caica MP present for the celebrations. The “Alan and Rose “Nelly” Nelson” was named at Henley Beach in front of a crowd of sponsors, nippers, patrol and club members.
