Crowland (modern usage) or Croyland (medieval era name and the
one still in ecclesiastical use) is a small town in the South Holland
district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated between
Peterborough and Spalding. Crowland contains two sites of
historical interest.
1- The ruined medieval Croyland Abbey
2- The 14th-century three-sided bridge, Trinity Bridge, which
stands at its central point and used to be the confluence of three
streams.[

Henry Hitchbourne Garfield MARRIED Maria Cherrington on 22 May 1849 at Croyland, Lincolnshire,
England. They probably sail to U.S.A. during 1849-50 and made their way to Council Bluffs, Iowa, the
outfitting area for wagon train to SLC, Utah. Her death was one of those deeply sad occasions as LDS
pioneers struggled to reach the Salt Lake Valley in Utah Territory. Her winter burial on 1 Dec 1849 at
Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa was recorded by family members and there is no record of any child
born to this marriage.

Your tombstone stands neglected and alone.
The name and date are chiseled out on polished, marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care. It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist. You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you in flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our heart contracts and beats a pulse entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled so many years ago.
Spreads out among the ones you left who would have loved you so.
I wonder as you lived and loved, I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot and come to visit you.
