For members of the New Braunfelsand Canyon high school dance teams, solo work — performing a chosen danceroutine all alone in front of packedbleachers — is a snap.
Waiting on deck, however, is a differentstory.
"Ooh, being over there's the hardestpart," said Monaceras officer TaylorClark, gesturing toward a sequin-ladengirl who listened for her cue Friday inthe sidelines of New Braunfels MiddleSchool's main gym. "That's when you're
really nervous," Clark said. But the dancer bounded onto the floor
moments later with a comfortable grin, and Clark herself betrayed no anxietyduring a sultry routine to Dusty Spring-field's "Son of Preacher Man" in the firstround of an event that drew about 600competitors to New Braunfels HighSchool.
The annual HTEDance Texas DanceTeam Championship Series, held for thefifth year Saturday in New Braunfels, brought local dancers — including theSmithson Valley Silver Spurs, the CanyonAristocats and the New Braunfels Mono-ceras and Mystics — together with more
than 20 other teams for judged compe-tition from sunup until about 9 p.m.
Trophies were awarded in genresincluding jazz, lyrical, pom, military, novelty and hip-hop, and a high-kickcategory with six preliminary rounds.
The dancers put in "many, manyhours" of work prior to competition, said Kellie Jackson-Jandt, Monocerasand Mystics director, and emotions runhigh at events like the championshipseries.
"Oh yes," Jackson-Jant said. "We seeeverything from tears of total panic andfright to (tears from) being really happy, really relieved the event went well."
