    INTRODUCTION

These are a variety of formulas I have used in m y business and practiceover the years. Some are elegant, some are silly and trivial, some are very usefultherapeutic formulas. I have mixed them all together with little by way ofeditorializing.

Some of the herbs are readily available in commerce, some are obscure, since I have been gathering, selling, using, teaching and writing about herbs inthe Western United States for 25 years and have come to know a lot of usefulp lants not often encoun tered in comm erce. Many former stud ents market themcomm ercially, but since I try to teach bioregional herbalism, they TOO are mostlyin business in the west. Herbs Etcetera of Santa Fe, Dragon River Herbals,Wyoming Wildcrafters, Bisbee Botanicals, The Herbalist (Seattle) and The HerbStore are some of the more visibly marketed of these lines (there are many morewith a more local focus) and some of these obscure herbs are now to be found inthe catalogues of Eclectic Institute, The Herb Pharm, Herbalist and Alchemistand Blessed Herbs. Anyw ay, scrambling around to try and locate some wierdexotic 'cause Moore says so isn't the point. I have offered some substitu tes, if youknow YOUR herbs real well make your own substitutes and otherwise just trythe stuff that you can get the herbs for. I have always maintained that formulasare the LEAST importan t part of herbalism anyw ay.

You can get the same effects from 100 different variations of variousherbs. You need to know the craft well in order to get the same end result usingother paths, but the actual formula isn't all that important...knowing the paletteis. Anytime I see references to some "secret form ula" I walk away. The VASTmajority of physiologic reactions produced by herbs are repeated OVER andOVER endlessly in different plants, the physioogic effects that are beneficial inplants that are ingested are really only a few.

Although a specific herb may offer a subtle range of physiologic colorsthat warrant a homeopathic profile or a classic Eclectic Specific Indicationseperating its energy completely from other herbs, the mixing of stuff together

reduces the subtleties to a gentle grey noise and you are left with thepredominate effects. The Eclectics often raged against polypharm acy for thesimple reason that botanical subtleties are lost. At the very same time most ofthem grimaced and ended up using formu las most of the time. They are simp ler, effective, and, since most disease is self-limiting and not always so subtle, oftenall that's needed . Besides, having a bunch of useful formulas around the house(or, if you are a practitioner or physician, around the clinic) covers most basesand allows YOU to control the resources. You don't need to go trundling aboutseeing an Eclectic M.D. (100 years ago) or trying to figure out where to find a

professional herbalist in the yellow pages (there aren't many of us).

Most formulas I use these days are made for a specific person, and arethe end product of constitu tional evaluations and coun seling. For the 20 years ISOLD herbs, I put together a number of these formulas to wholesale, knowingthat, withou t a Professional Herbalist (giggle) around , the formulas needed to be

shotguns, covering the common problems that herbs are most appropriate for,and where subtleties are unnecessary (or could not be d efined legally on the labeland therefore could not be communicated to the innocent user). Besides, if youcan't make it simple, you d on't know w hat you're doing.

When we pack for our end less numbers of field trips w e pile boxes withenough tinctures, salves, fluidextracts, patches and herbal junk to outfit a

dispensatory for a practicing Physiomedicalist in 1885 (another one of thoseschools of Med ical Practice long extinct, may Flexner be cursed!). What weACTUALLY end up u sing, how ever, if we get sick, are those same old formulas Iused to wholesale. We always run out of Neutralizing Cord ial, Hayden'sViburnu m Comp ound, the latest version of some analgesic balm I pu t together inpharm acy lab and Mouth Tincture. We du tifu lly drag back all the subtle stuffuntil the next field trip.

I figure it's our version of the gallon jars of organic soybeans and mung

beans (for sprouting) that were bought in the holy flush of some dietaryasceticism in 1987 and , in over 470,000 households across this land , get d raggedsheepishly from house to house with N OBODY willing to either u se them or riskBad Karma Points by tossing them...an alternative lifestyle equivalent of theChristmas Fruitcake from Hell, and related to the Ma Rollers, Pyramid Hats,New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel Extract bottles, Willard Water and the half-finished Orgon Box that clutter the symbolic attics of those of us that haveresided in N orth American Alternative Village.

    5.7 CERVICAL DYSPLASIA SUPPOSITO RIES*Echinacea Fluidextract..................30 ml.Calendula Tincture............. ............10 ml.Glycerin........ ....................................175 ml.Gelatin (Pharm aceutical Grade)....25 gram s

(* you can obtain the same results by slowly evaporating 5 ounces of EchinaceaTincture down to 1 ounce of milky-grey liquid and use that in p lace of the hard -

    to-come-by-unless-you-make-it-yourself Fluidextract)

Heat the glycerin on a double boiler, add the Echinacea and Calendula, andmaintain at a low temperature for at least 30 minutes to evaporate off some ofthe alcohol. Add the gelatin(preferably finely powdered) and w hisk (or egg-beat) until the gelatin is THOROUGHLY dissolved in the liqu ids. Don't leaveany little gelatinous solids...continue stirring until the liquid is a clear grey-brown syrup .

Fill a plastic roll of disposable 3 or 5 ml suppository molds up to the top of theform line. A small tu rkey baster (no jokes O.K.?) is the easiest tool for this. Thisshou ld make 80-100 suppositories. The usual two-piece hard p lastic or metalsuppository molds, although reusable, work TERRIBLY for gelatin-basedsuppositories, fine for glycerin or cocoa bu tter types.

USE: A suppository should be inserted at night into the vagina and as close tothe cervix as practical. Gelatin-based suppositories do not melt like those madewith cocoa bu tter or gelatin, but d issolve slowly over 8-12 hou rs, maintaining the

herb presence for long enough to facilitate resolution and stimulate regenerationof the tissues. This can be continued for many days if necessary.

CLAUSE: If it causes inflamm ation, stop. I know of no instance where theconstituents have caused this reaction, bu t anything is possible. It is better todeal with such a condition when you can monitor the cervix yourself with aspeculum or can have it done for you regularly by a nurse-practitioner ormidw ife, particularly if a class 2 or class 3 smear is involved, Cervical erosion, ofcourse, is CAUSED by something and stimulating m embrane healing is not likely

to help much in the long run unless you deal at least to some degree withunderlying causes.

VEGETARIAN NO TE: Yes, gelatin comes from animals. No, Agar Agar andsuch are NOT reasonable substitutes. Use gelatin or don 't; it's up to you, since Iknow of no appropr iate vegetable substitute. There ARE refined pharm aceuticalcolloids that are substituted for gelatin, but they are the refined by-products of itanyw ay, far m ore expensive, harder to get...and MUCH fur ther from the source.

CAUSES: A common cause is diminished estrogen availability to cervical

membranes: if cycles are consistantly longer than 29 or 30 days, you mightconsider one of the reproductive tonics or simply Don Quai; if you haveextended bou ts of pelvic congestion w ith hemorrhoid and / or varicose vein flare-ups, you m ight try a liver tonic, ileo-cecal tonic or colon tonic. Another commoncause is a chronicly imbalanced vaginal flora...sometimes from a Candidainfection, sometimes from bacterial vaginosis. Both are helped by lactobacillus

presence, both through d iet and / or dou che; candid iasis is highly reactive tosugars (both good and bad), fermented foods and booze...and is usually worseAFTER menses; bacterial vaginosis is not blood-sugar reactive, and is oftenworse between ovulation and menses. SOURCES: The roles of perforated molds can be obtained from a nu mber ofpharm aceutical sup ply houses. Every pharm acy has these catalogues, and anyreasonable pharmacist should be willing to locate a source, tack on a moralprofit, and order them for you. Athough unusual, your ord er is perfectly legaland you have an obvious right to request and obtain the product. Thepharm acist is either A) lazy, B) so shell-shocked by the times that he/ she figuresit must have something to d o w ith d rug abuse and refuses on general principleor C) the pharmacist doesn't approve (also on general principle) with folksmaking their own med icine and D) they used to have their own d rug store, got

Lookfor a drugstore named after somebody...like Jack's or Garcia's, or named after abrand of toilet tissue...like Regent's or Deluxe or Standard, or after aneighborhood , like Mid town , Uptown or Lakeside. Establishing a rapp ort withan adventurous and inquisitive pharmacist is VERY important if you wish tomake anything more than teas and tinctures. After all, most herb formulatingderives d irectly from the pharm acy of 50 or 100 years ago. They can get youglycerin, anhydrous lanolin, potassium carbonate, even bees-wax and colophonyor rosin. With a body of experential use in Ayurved ic Medicine, wherein myfriend has learned it, I would tru st the use here. I have never inqu ired as to hisrather peculiar scheme of proportions. With the increased use by au thorities of property confiscation, whereinTHEY keep YOUR stuff even if you never get to court or are even charged withpossession (and pigs will fly before they ever give it back to you, since localpolice get to keep most of the money they raise from auctioning it off), havingthis plant is rather riskier at p resent. (Did I miss something w hen I learned aboutthe Constitution in Civic's Class??)

Those of you having a relationship to Cannabis dating from the OldDays, with fond memories of youth , more hair, lower gravitational pu ll and Tie-Dye teeshirts should especially bear this in mind. Those involved in the dru gbusiness, both those that deal and those that chase, are MUCH wierder. Boil to the soft ball stage. Remove from heat for 10 minutes, add 1 cube sweetbutter. Mix in 6 ounces of powd ered Guarana Bean, and stir constantly until theglistening surface starts to look like frosting and stiffens. Add nuts (if desired),scrape onto greased surface, cool until set, and cut.

WARNING : This stuff tastes GREAT, but speeds like a m other. This has no self-redeeming qualities...its just hap pily perverse.

Dosage: start with a small square, and wait an hour before overlapping withanother piece. Guarana is the Queen of caffeine plants (with somehypoxanthines thrown in) and will generally (to quote Dr. Donald Culbreth)produce gayety, restlessness, quick perception and wakefulness, while slowingthe pu lse and imp airing the app etite. Eating it slows absorption and can extendits effects well past the 3-4 hours you might expect from a similar amount ofcoffee. The fudge tastes good, the effects of Guaran a are fun, but if you p ig outon this stuff you can get to a level of pure caffeine jitters that completely over-

rides the subtleties that, at a more reasonable amoun t, make Guarana so nice. For several years in the early 70s I manufactured this fudge, packagedand labeled it and w holesaled it to truckstops in the L.A. area. One time I madeup a huge batch to give to my sales reps to take to a Gift Show (I was making aline of herbal gift boxes...teas, sp ice blends, stu ff like that). They passed it all ou t,the show ended up lasting until dawn, with vendors, product representativesand buyers wandering around spending, ordering, chating, dancing, gigglingand kvetching long after the doors closed. The reps returned to L.A. only to findthat they had walked off with someone else's order book, had lost theirs, and

promptly slept for two days. I d id not do this again. Neither should you..
