Description of The Activiy

Background :

Indonesia has a lot of potential medicinal plant

which grown well in Indonesia’s soil. Those

plants can be developed and manufactured

further to become a herbal medicine called

“jamu”. Jamu is Indonesia’s traditional medicine

which is more affordable than purchasing

conventional medication. Those plants can also

used as a basic material for other industrial

product such as food, drink, or cosmetics. Those

reasons lead us to introduce the natural wealth

of Indonesia to all pharmacy student

Aims :

Hope that every student who joined the tour can

increase their knowledge about medicinal plant

in Indonesia, the products made from them, and

how to make it

Methods and used tools/materials :

We visited two places. The first place was Balai

Besar Peneletian dan Pengembangan Tanaman

Obat dan Obat Tradisional “BBPPTOOT”

(Association of the Research and Development of

Medicinal Plant and Traditional Medicine) and

the second place was the industry of basic

material using natural resources named “Java

Plant”.

When visiting Java Plant, we were given an

explanation about the history of their industries

and also jamu at first. Then we walked around

3

the industry. There were several people who

explained to us everything during the tour. We

could asked some question to them if there were

something unclear

We started our journey from the Faculty of

Pharmacy Universitas Gadjah Mada at 7 AM. It

took 4 hours to reach BBPPTOOT which is located

in Tawangmangu, Karanganyar. Then the tour

started at 11 AM and finished at 1 PM. After that

we continued our journey to Java Plant, we spent

an hour in Java Plant, from 2 PM – 3 PM.

Results :

BBPPTOOT is the national association of research

and development of medicinal plant and

traditional medicine. Most of the national

research about medicinal plants is conducted

there. During the tour we had a chance to know

the history of BBPPTOOT and jamu at first, and

continued by walking around to visit all

laboratory and herbal garden. We had an

opportunity to see the demonstration of how to

make jamu as well.

The second place is Java Plant. Java Plant is the

modern industry of basic material specialized in

botanical extraction. Their manufacturing

concerns in food, beverage, pharmaceutical,

nutraceutical, cosmetic and agriculture. They

have a good position as natural ingredient

manufacturer. We had an opportunity to know

4

the process of making basic ingredient of some

product. The process shown from the first form

of plant until become another form such as

extract, granule, powder or liquid.

Comments and/or ideas arising from the activity :

This kind of activity is a very good opportunity for pharmacy students to increase their

knowledge about medicinal plants; how they are processed in the industry, what kind of research has been conducted, what is the current issue about them, etc.

At first we set the limit of participants for only 30 person, based in who sign up first. But it turns out the enthusiasm of student was very good, better than we expected, so

for the next activity we will increase the number of participants.
