PSSA Testing in reading and math
for grades 3, 4, and 5 will begin on
Monday, April 13 and continue
through April 24th. PSSA Testing
for Science will take place from Mon-
day, April 27 and continue through
Thursday, April 30th. Please read
the following tips for successful test
taking to ensure that your child is
well prepared.
1. Get a good night’s sleep before
the test.
2. Have a nutritious breakfast.
Students Take on the 100 Block Challenge First and second grade students at an assembly on January 20th took
on the 100 Block Challenge. They said that they would read ten fif-
teen-minute blocks per week for ten weeks ending March 27th. A bul-
letin board was created to chart each classroom’s progress toward
that goal, and each class was given a Dr. Seuss hat as a marker show-
ing when every student in each classroom has read an additional ten
Blocks. As of February 24th, the midpoint of our challenge, the bulle-
tin board shows that the students in Mrs. Krantz’s class and Mrs.
Rafferty’s class have all read 50 Blocks since January 20th. The stu-
dents in these two classrooms are on target to meet the end goal of
reading 100 Blocks by Spring Break. Congratulations to the students
of B-7 and B-11!
Congratulations and thank you to all parents of our first and second
graders who are supporting your children by encouraging reading at
home and signing your child’s log sheet to attest to your child reading.
More support is needed, please! While we are congratulating the stu-
dents of two classrooms for on-target reading, that is only 20% of
the classrooms that accepted the challenge. A few students in each
classroom are not consistently reading at home and/or logging their
reading and obtaining a parent’s signature. Please check your child’s
log sheet today. Home reading is key to improving reading ability and
encouraging vocabulary development, which is the real goal of the 100
Block Challenge. Please join us in reaching our goal: 100 Blocks of
reading between January 20th and March 27th.
Aaliyah Vega of B-4 receives her 500 Block
ribbon from Mrs. Rihl.
Congratulations, Aaliyah!

Hi Parents!
I wanted to introduce myself, since I will be working as a guidance counselor
here through the end of this school year. My name is Rebecca Holtz. I went
to Penn for undergrad as well as graduate school; I graduated from the
Graduate School of Education’s Counseling and Mental Health Program this
past May. Through internships and previous jobs, I have extensive experi-
ence counseling students individually and in groups, teaching classroom
guidance lessons, planning and implementing positive behavior interven-
tions and supports, and leading school-wide events. I will be working with
students with last names A through L here at Herbert Hoover Elementary
School. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your children!
Please note: The school day at Herbert Hoover Elementary School begins promptly at 9:10 a.m. Be-
cause your children’s safety is very important to us they are not permitted to enter the school building
before 8:55 a.m. Children may not be dropped off in front of the school to wait outside before 8:55 as
there is no adult supervision.
Any child reporting to school after 9:10 a.m. must report to the office accompanied by a parent or
guardian, signed in and receive a late slip to report to class.
For the safety of your children we are asking for your cooperation with these procedures. We are con-
cerned that many parents are simply dropping their young children off in the morning when no adult
supervision is available, thus creating and unsafe situation. Parents must be responsible to sign their
children in and make sure they enter the building safely. This is especially true since all doors in the
building will be locked at 9:10.
Herbert Hoover Elementary has partnered with Family Service of Langhorne to provide our students
with even more supports. If you think your child can benefit from in-school counseling therapy for is-
sues related to anxiety, depression and disruptive behaviors, just to name a few, then Family Services
counseling may be very helpful. We are fortunate to have a therapist at Hoover meet with students
once a week. In order to qualify for this free service, your child must have a Medical Assistance Card.
Unfortunately, commercial insurance is not accepted at this time in our school-based program. Your
child must only have Medical Assistance. Please contact Christie Wood or Rebecca Holtz, Hoover’s
Guidance Counselors, for more information.
You can also call Family Services directly at: (215) 757-6916 ext. 159
NOTE: Day rotations are subject to change if school is closed unexpectedly!
