My weight journey all started in my late teens, hovering around a healthy 10 stone through my teenage years, I walked everywhere, lived my spare time outdoors and ate normal family meals. But like most young adults I came of drinking and driving age, my spare time was spent socialising in pubs and clubs, and instead of walking everywhere I bought a car and became very lazy. After a few years of watching the scales tip, my confidence fell and I joined a slimming club. I was single at the time and found it easy, I lost 2 stone very quickly....but like most slimming clubs it crept back on, and quickly. When I met my husband I had gone from a size 12 to a 16, and I was bigger than before! He was a non smoker, so I took the opportunity to quit. With that I gained even more weight and as I was happy, I ignored the scales. We dined out and holidayed and had a happy few years, but inside I was miserable.

My wedding day was fantastic, but sadly I was at my heaviest. My wedding dress was a size 18 and on the wedding day I far too big for it and I felt uncomfortable, even had to be squeezed into it. I couldn’t eat my meal or sit properly I was so uncomfortable. I still feel a pang of shame and sadness when I see my wedding pictures. Deciding to start a family I joined a slimming club again, vowing to lose weight for the sake of my children, and I was desperate to have a healthy pregnancy. I again lost 2 stone, though when I got pregnant I was still quite big at 14 stone. I managed to hover around the same weight throughout my pregnancy, but having maternity leave was like opening the fridge to me! Long days alone with a new born baby are hard on someone with food issues; I would eat to fill time. Eat to feel happy, eat to feel good. As my daughter grew, she was soon old enough to be weaned onto food and I

made sure this was healthy. We had active days and went out walking a lot, swimming and spending time outdoors, but I still couldn’t get the weight off. As she became mobile and independent I started to struggle to keep up. I had to do something NOW before I lost these important days in my daughter’s life. At Christmas 2009, I went out for our works Christmas meal. My boss had recently lost quite a bit of weight and I was impressed with how good he looked, he began to tell me about Lighter Life and what it entailed. I was really interested in how the food packs worked, and the counselling sessions. I knew I needed more help than just losing weight, I needed my mind re wiring! For me the problem went deeper, I needed to go back to basics, teach myself to enjoy healthy food, appreciate feeling satisfied and not feel like I had to burst buttons to be satisfied. I basically needed what Lighter Life had to offer. Online I read up on Lighter Life, discovered a session in Shipley with Christine Smith. I emailed her and she called me very quickly, inviting me to a session the following week. It was inspiring, and very informative. My doctor approved of the Lighter Life programme (Programme NOT diet!), and I was ready to start. The first few days were hard to get through, withdrawing from food is tough. Like saying good bye to an old friend! But the massive weight loss makes it so worthwhile. In other slimming classes the first weeks loss is the biggest and it slows right down after week 2, but on Lighter Life it drops off every week and doesn’t slow, it’s amazing. The counselling sessions were tremendous, getting right to the root of my issues with weight and food. It really is the best thing I ever discovered, I feel healthy, I look healthy and I’m confident. It took me 14 weeks to lose my target of 4 stone. I’m 4 weeks into maintaining and I’m still the exact same weight. I see Christine my counsellor every week and I also help out in our Wednesday evening class to keep me involved. I’ve even plucked up courage to start road running, and I’m up to about 6 miles a week! A few years ago I couldn’t run a hundred yards! As well as losing weight, Lighter Life has given me the tools to keep my weight off.

We have so much fun when we’re at Ladyzone and I love having the opportunity to have a laugh with my Mum with no other pressures. I go 5 times a week and don’t have to force myself, especially when I know I’m going to see results. We both feel so much better, more confident and happier. The circuit suits all abilities so it can be as hard or as relaxed as you want. My Mum can do it at 66

and I can still push myself really hard.

I’ve been telling Shelley that she should join for two years. Now that she has, I’m so glad because we can go together which is great

because it’s the only chance we get to chat un-interrupted and also we can support and encour-

age each other. It’s our chance to be just us!

Of all the treatments I have had, reflexology was not one of them, so when I heard about local Reflexologist Helen Alred, I was keen to try it out and see what benefits were to be gained.

As Helen works mobile, and I work very long hours, it was arranged for Helen to come to our office at the end of the working day to do the treatment. Helen arrived complete with a folding treatment chair, which has to one of the most comfortable things I have ever sat in, and everything she needed to carry out the treatment, all condensed into a very neat hold all! First of all Helen wanted to find

out about my medical history and lifestyle and we went through a comprehensive questionnaire and then Helen explained to me what Reflexology is, what I could expect to experience and also what after effects and benefits I might have. Helen started with some general relaxation, followed by a precise thumb and finger walking technique over every part of each foot in turn, toes (even the tips), soles and tops of my feet and ankles, applying pressure to every reflex area in turn. This was never ticklish, however at times I did feel very sleepy and even had to close my eyes for a ‘mini nap’ a couple of times, it was amazing how tender some of

the points were and Helen explained which area of the body each point related to that was out of balance – correctly pointing out problems I am experiencing in my back and shoulders. Helen worked on these areas to relieve the issues and explained that I should drink lots of water to flush away the toxins released during the treatment, and that I would probably sleep very deeply that night...correct! I slept like a baby and felt so relaxed and refreshed the next day, it was amazing. Helen also called me the next nay to see how I was feeling, a great follow up service, and the whole experience was so rewarding that I will definitely be booking more treatments!

Fashions come and go, changing with the season - so many colours, styles, occasions and lifestyles, it can cost an absolute fortune, and where to go for the best footwear selection, value and service? Shoobox in Bingley, that’s where!

Owner, Janet Brearley, was a legal secretary for fifteen years and, like most females, always had a passion for shoes and bags so was in her element when she had the opportunity to work for the previous owners of the shop, two days a week. It was then a much more traditional shoe shop and Janet could see the potential and the gap in the market locally for a footwear boutique that offered a range of classic footwear alongside the latest on-trend designs. The opportunity came up to buy the business when the owners decided to sell, and Janet realised her dream. In the two years since, Janet has built a

reputation as the place to visit to find the perfect shoes, sandals, boots, handbags, fashion jewellery and accessories, at prices that make it possible to wear the latest designs as soon as they come out, or even to buy your favourite styles in more than one colour! Janet stocks comfy, fashionable casual shoes by Tamaris and is proud to be the preferred local stockist of Skechers. There are classic designs by Lunar, trendy styles from timeless and high-end fashion by Escape. Another favourite brand regularly stocked is Marco Tozzi and there is always a superb selection of classic and fashion bags, from the oversized ones for summer to the beautiful creations by Charlotte Reid. So if you want to stand out from the fashion crowd, look amazing in your holiday footwear, or complete that special occasion or wedding outfit with the perfect style and colour of footwear and bag...Shoobox in Bingley has to be your very first choice.

The Baildon in Bloom Committee is currently busy planning the next Wacky Scarecrow Walk for Saturday 11th September, and would like to invite members of the public to send in their application forms as soon as possible. The forms are now available in most shops around the village.

This booking system worked really well last year and was a great help to the organisers who try to make sure everything runs smoothly, no

mean feat when you have so many people and scarecrows to contend with! There will be no set theme as anything goes, so please put your thinking caps on and have a go. The children will love it, as they did last year, and you never know you may even win a Silver Cup – presented for the ‘Best Scarecrow on the Walk’.

The Launch of the Wacky Scarecrow Walk by Baildon Resident, Ron Bairstow

Last year saw a record number of scarecrows, 220 in tota, so let’s see if this year there can be even more! I have ordered the sunshine for the day already, for there is nothing worse than looking at a wet scarecrow!

A former Methodist chapel first opened in the 1850s and which went on to become one of the area’s best known dance schools, has been given a new lease of life... in the form of the wonderful Deeva Restaurant.

Porritt’s Ballroom in Farsley, was once the centre of activity on Saturday evenings and drew people from miles around. The Here & Now team were intrigued to find out more about this local historic building and see the transformation for ourselves; we thought it would be a good idea to review the food while we were there too! We spoke with new owners, Zulfi Hussain and Sanjeev Johar, who told us, “We love the building! It had a rich history which we were keen to preserve. It was a former dance hall and a very famous one too. We are passionate about the building because it’s so iconic, but it had been out of use for more than five years, so we have restored it to its former glory.”

And we can confirm that Deeva Restaurant is once again a stunning venue! This majestic building creates a roadside impression that sets very high expectations for the experience inside, and as soon as you enter it’s that definite “wow” factor. The decor is elegant yet contemporary, the welcome warm and friendly and the food smelt absolutely delicious...could it possibly get any better? We wanted to really test them so we asked the chef to choose our whole meal.Deeva has a theatre kitchen and we were able to watch the chef as he prepared various things in the Tandoori ovens, watching a Naan Bread being created from scratch and cooking in the open ovens was great fun. Following the traditional pickles and popadoms, (have to say if they sold their pickles we would have stocked up!), we were presented with a mixed starter to share, this comprised of Paneer Tikka (Indian cheese, very tasty), Chicken Pakora, Shami Kebab and Lamb Chops (now they were amazing!). Great start, could the mains be as good... no... they were even better!

We were served Chicken Karahii, chicken cooked in an iron pan with garlic, ginger, tomatoes, green chillies and coriander; Lamb Biryani, a lamb rice dish which is apparently often reserved for special occasions such as weddings; Mixed Vegetables and Daal Tarka, a colourful lentil dish came as our accompaniments. Of course we shared everything and I have to say that as good as the chicken dish was, my definite favourite was the lamb, it was absolutely delicious, and the Naan bread has to be tasted to appreciate how good it was! We have never before had a Naan bread that we could finish as they are usually very stodgy and filling, however, this was light as a feather and really flavoursome. One of the customer comments in their feedback book says: “The naan bread king works here.” And I can confirm that he does! There was no room left for pudding...or so we thought! We once again shared a selection of Indian delights, some that we had never tried before such as Gulab Jaman, deep fried dough balls steeped in a sugary syrup and Gajrela or ‘Carrot Delight’, a tasty blend of carrots, light spices and cream, served warm; just stunning and if you have a sweet tooth you will be in heaven! What a find! Deeva also has some fabulous private dining areas for that special occasion. We approached Deeva and asked them to offer a reader discount, as this is a restaurant we highly recommend. See voucher and happy dining!

What a fantastic day I had running The London Marathon, and after a very scary week running up to the day as I suffered with a back injury! However, I did it and ran the London 2010 Marathon in 4 hours and 27 minutes.

The day was forecast to be hot and sunny but as we made our way to the start line there was a very black cloud and heavy rain, but that did not dampen my spirits for this fantastic race. As I moved closer to the start line I knew that my ambition of running the marathon was here, and as I ran through the

many wonders of London’s attractions, passing by The Tower of London, Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace, I finally reached the finish line and realised that I had completed the London 2010 Marathon. I did a personal best time and words cannot explain the feelings I had on the day. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who found the time to sponsor and wish me luck raising money for the British Lung Foundation. An extra thank you for the CMI Logistics (Steve Cooper), and Clear Image Systems (Dean and Sue Marshall) for their donations which helped me raise over £1,300 for the charity.

The support I received from my wife, the Idle AC, the staff at Pure Gym in Leeds and the support leading up to and at the marathon from Nicola Bourne of the British Lung Foundation, contributed greatly to me achieving my goal of finishing the London 2010 Marathon.

Thanks also to the Here & Now Magazine for the article which helped raise the awareness.

Most of us remember summer camp from our childhoods: sleeping in a cold cabin or tent, eating nasty food, being forced to swim in a freezing lake. We also remember making friends for life, the warmth of a late-night campfire and the thrill of doing things we had never done before.

Summer camp is a great way for children to learn about themselves and others. And with the enormous variety of camps on offer today, there is literally a camp out there to suit any child. Why not see if your son or daughter could benefit from attending camp?

Types of Camps

Summer camps are a way for children to learn during the summer months in a supervised

programme that encourages them to both excel and enjoy themselves. They will also engage in a variety of different activities and make new friends, learn how to be more independent and try new things. As a variety of summer camps are on offer, talk with your child in-depth to see what interests them most. Some children prefer a sleep-away camp for one or two weeks, others will want to attend day camp. Some concentrate on one specific interest or activity, such as music or drama. Others will have several different interests, offering something for everyone.

Benefits of Summer Camp

Attending summer camp is much more than just learning a new skill or having fun. The vast

majority of children will also gain long-lasting benefits that will stick with them for life. Many kids come back to the same camp year after year, making the experience an important building block of their childhood. Summer camp is one topic which most children and parents agree on wholeheartedly. Whether your child chooses a residential or day camp, he or she will benefit greatly from the experience and no doubt beg you to return the following year. Day camps start from age three, while residential camps start from age nine and

Towngate Celebrates

Britain has plenty of venerable institutions, but none so tasty as Fish and Chips, which this year celebrates its 150th birthday.

It’s a simple dish, usually a hunk of golden brown cod or haddock served with thickly cut strips of potatoes sprinkled with salt and vinegar. Despite that simplicity, the dish has become an icon of British culture. Winston Churchill called them “the good companions”. Michael Jackson liked them with mushy peas. For generations, fish and chips have fed millions of memories - eaten with greasy fingers on a seaside holiday, a pay-day treat at the end of the working week or a late-night supper on the way home from the pub. Everyone has their own preferences,

and tastes vary from one part of the country to another. Cod or Haddock? Salt and vinegar? Pickled onion? Scraps?

Like Morecambe and Wise or Wallace and Gromit, Fish and Chips are a classic double act - and yet they started life as solo performers. And their roots are not as British as you might think. The story of the humble chip goes back to the 17th Century to either Belgium or France, depending who you believe. Oddly enough, the chip may have been invented as a substitute for fish, rather than an accompaniment. When the rivers froze over and nothing could be caught, resourceful housewives began cutting potatoes into fishy shapes and frying them as an alternative. Who first had the bright idea to marry fish with chips remains the subject of fierce controversy and we will probably never know for sure. However it came about, the

marriage quickly caught on. What is it about fish and chips that make them the number one takeaway in the UK? Is it the wonderful aroma, their unrivalled flavour, the warm comforting feeling that they provide, or simply their natural golden good looks? Fish and chips from fish and chip shops are freshly prepared from natural products. Fillets of fish are covered in batter, fried until golden and served with freshly chipped potatoes. Fish and chips are a wholesome dish and lower in calories than many of their fast food rivals, have only 9.4 grams of fat per 100 grams, easily beating other takeaways – the average high street chain burger has 14.8 grams and Donor Kebab, pitta and salad have 16.2 grams! As part of the celebrations for the 150th birthday of fish and chips, Friday 25th June is ‘National Fish and Chip Day’ and fish and chip shops all over the country are holding special events to celebrate; ranging from organising picnics and street parties to balloon races and charity fundraising events. Towngate Fisheries in Idle, Bradford, is celebrating by selling Fish and Chips for only £1.50 all day on the 25th, with all the proceeds being donated to The Fishermen’s mission. The Fishermen’s Mission helps provide emergency and welfare support to Britain’s fishermen and their families. The staff at

Towngate Fisheries will be dressing in Victorian costumes for the day and creating a party atmosphere, hoping to raise as much money as possible for this worthwhile cause. Mark Drummond, owner of Towngate Fisheries is the current training co-coordinator for the National Federation of Fish Friers, which represents about 8,500 fish and chip shop owners in Britain. So it’s easy to see why his own fish and chips have won many awards! Mark has an excellent business record having owned businesses in the Bradford area

for the past 18 years. He holds a five-star Seafish Quality Award and was Yorkshire Area Winner of the Seafish Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Competition in 2007/8. After all, there are fish and chips and then there are award-winning fish and chips! And now we all know where to go for an award-winning experience...Towngate Fisheries in Idle, where you will see Mark and his team preparing our nation’s favourite take-away for us lucky folk who live in Mark’s area, and if you don’t...it’s worth the journey!

John Steel is a freelance photographer based at The Bradford Grid, and from the selection of photographs on this page, you will instantly see why we have selected John to write a regular feature in Here & Now Magazine.

It’s probably the most important day of your lives. You have spent months and maybe even years planning every little detail. You will have all your family and friends under one roof and you want photographs to document this occasion. So, how do you go about choosing the perfect photographer?

Choosing a wedding

photographer

Priceobviously price is a big factor and generally you get what you pay for. Most photographers will offer wedding packages. It’s advisable to take a close look at what is and isn’t included. For example, will you receive an album, if so, how many pages? Are any printed images included in the package? If not, how much will they cost? How long will the photographer be at your wedding? Some photographers offer coverage from the bridal preparations through to the evening celebrations, others sell packages by the hour.

Photography styleHow would you like your wedding documented? Are you keen on lots of formal family portraits or would you prefer a more informal documentation of the day, or a mixture of both? A good photographer will ask you plenty of questions and listen to your requirements.

PersonalityA good wedding photographer will take time to meet you well before the wedding, to get to know you as a couple. The more

you feel at ease with your photographer, the more natural your pictures will be. Some photographers offer a pre-wedding shoot as part of their package. This is a great opportunity not only to establish a rapport with your photographer, but for you to get used to being in front of the camera before the big day. The added bonus being that you’ll end up with some amazing shots of the two of you!

Examples of their workTry to get a feel for the photographer’s style. In addition to any images which might be on their website, ask to see a complete wedding album. This will give you a good idea of the quality and consistency of the work they produce.

Things to look for: Challenging conditionsAs we all know the weather in this country can be very unpredictable so ensure your photographer can deal with all types of weather. The inside of churches and wedding venues can be dimly lit so make sure you see examples of how the photographer has overcome these challenges.

Spare equipmentTechnology can go wrong so you need to know that the photographer has spare kit for back-up.

InsuranceThis is often overlooked but should be a must for your own peace of mind. A wedding photographer should have public liability, professional indemnity insurance as well as having their equipment insured.

Book earlyWedding photographers often get booked up to 18 months in advance. It’s advisable to start sourcing a wedding photographer as soon as you’ve fixed a wedding date and venue to avoid disappointment.

These are just a few pointers to get you looking in the right direction. It’s your wedding day and it’s a big investment, but with the right photographer you can have a great deal of fun and come away with a beautiful album and a stunning set of images which you can treasure for the rest of your life!

There’s a new team at the helm at The Chevin in Menston, and it’s in the extremely safe, experienced hands of manager, Tracy Carroll, and head chef, Graeme Hill.

Part of the Greencliffe Taverns group, which includes The Stansfield Arms at Apperley Bridge and The Black Horse at Askwith, The Chevin is surprisingly close to Guiseley and Menston, in fact within walking distance, yet when there you could be anywhere in The Yorkshire Dales...the setting is stunning, the views breathtaking and the food and service make it well worth the visit! As partner of Nick Green who runs The Stansfield Arms, Tracy has impressive credentials, with a degree in hospitality and seven years working as a Brand Standard Trainer for the group of Henry’s Cafe Bars. Tracy then took a career break to start a family with Nick, and decided that with their children reaching school age, now is the time to step back into the industry she loves and put The Chevin back on the map! Assisting Tracy to achieve this is head chef, Graeme Hill, whose background is in event catering and gastro pubs. Graeme’s focus is on giving the menu provenance, sourcing all

ingredients locally and supporting other local businesses. Tracy told us: “There is a wealth of fantastic local produce on the doorstep and we are committed to buying locally and promoting how good these ingredients are by using them throughout our menu.” The menu now comprises of a fabulous selection of sandwiches, all served with chips and salad at £5.95, Soup of the Day and Choice of Sandwich for £7.95, tasty salads such as Crispy Duck Salad with Oriental Vegetables and Hoi Sin Sauce (from £8.50), and Light Bites including Seasonal Forest Mushroom and Asparagus Linguini with freshly shaved Parmesan (from £7.95). Mouth watering main courses offer such local delights as Lishman’s of Ilkley Sausage and Mash with red wine and onion gravy ( mains start at £8.95).There’s bound to be a dessert to take your fancy too as, when checking out the new menu, we were spoilt for choice, and desserts are from £4.50. If you are on a strict timeline, you can now also pre-order by email or by phone and all full menus are on the website for The Chevin, The Stansfield Arms and The Black Horse: www.gctaverns.co.uk where you will also find full details of events and all of the latest news.

The Chevin is the perfect stop-off point for walkers and cyclists, or if you are out for a drive in the country, there is ample parking with a great decking and garden area, fully equipped with blankets to keep you warm once the sun has gone down; and if you decide to walk from Guiseley or Menston station for a great day or evening, the walk back from The Chevin is all downhill! Make a note in your diary...Early Bird Menu 5pm to 7pm, Monday to Thursday £9.95 and Afternoon Tea is only £3.25 and is served between 3pm and 5pm seven days a week.

Further note to self...Seafood and Wine Evening on 14th August!

Roberts Park, Saltaire

In 1953, Titus Salt, then 53 years old, moved his wool business from the centre of Bradford to his new model village on the banks of the River Aire. He was prompted to do this because of the rising death rate affecting Bradford’s workforce. This was a decision he made in 1848, when, as Mayor of Bradford, there occurred a Cholera outbreak that killed 480 people.

Deciding on the area he wanted, he appointed Lockwood & Mawson Architects, who had just finished building Bradford Town Hall and The Wool Exchange. Work started on his new mill and homes for the workers in 1851. Titus Salt laid down strict conditions for people moving into the houses in the new village, there were to be no public houses, and he banned clothes lines but made alternative arrangements for ‘wash day’ – he built a huge wash house and incorporated drying facilities with constant hot water and hot piping to dry the clothes! For their entertainment he built the wonderful Victoria Hall, with a ballroom and many rooms for meetings. The hospital he built was well equipped and still functions to this day. Schools for pupils of all ages were built and a college - which again is still a hive of activity. He also built a wonderful

church with its dome and churches for all denominations. One of the buildings meant for 800 Sunday School pupils was demolished to make way for a car park! Lockwood and Mawson, the architects, used an Italian influence in all of their buildings, which, coupled with the new Yorkshire stone mined locally, produced a beautiful picture. One of the main features is the main chimney, modelled on the Santa Maria Gloriosa Church in Venice. To ensure the health of his workforce, Titus built Roberts Park, to provide an area for them to enjoy fresh air, sunshine and exercise, and it contained a cricket club, a cricket pitch and pavilion and an arboretum of beautiful trees that still stand proudly today. There is only one name for this architectural masterpiece...Saltaire! Unfortunately, after the death of Sir Titus in December 1876, funding for the park started to dry up, leading to its

deterioration and it became neglected and a disgrace - when suddenly out of the blue came LOTTERY MONEY! And behold, plans were soon underway to give the park a makeover costing millions. On completion of the work, a celebration was held on Saturday May22nd this year, where The Lord Mayor officially opened the new band stand. People turned up in their thousands to be entertained by various bands including The Titus Salt New School Jazz Group! He would have been very happy and proud to see his beloved park restored to its former glory and enjoyed by so many.

It used to be that society would look at organic gardening as something which only hippies or so called tree huggers participated in. However, based on the current economy and food prices, organic gardening is fast becoming one of the best ways to save money and eat healthy. This article will show you the top five health benefits of organic gardening.

1) Increased Consumption of Healthy Organic Foods

The simple fact of the matter is that organic fruits and vegetables taste much better. Traditionally grown fruits and vegetables are dry and lack flavour because they do not have the trace minerals that are added to the soils in actual organic gardens. Many times dyes and food colouring are added to make these vegetables look better. The nice thing about organic gardening is that by the end of the season there is enough fresh harvest to last for a long while.

2) Weight Loss from doing an Outdoor Activity

Not only is weight loss a great incentive to do any kind of gardening, it also helps you to feel at one with nature. You will spend less time indoors watching television, and you will breathe more fresh air and get plenty of natural sunlight. Keep in mind that you burn more calories in active gardening.

3) Boost of Self Esteem and Confidence

Nature provides a euphoric feeling of health and calmness. Even medical doctors cannot fully explain this phenomenon. With

the increase in technology and television programmes, it is easy to forget the serenity and peace of nature. By accomplishing a long term task, or even my realisation that you can wait for a good harvest; you can also appreciate some quiet time while gardening.

4) Reduced Exposure to Harmful Pesticides

Doctors and scientists now understand and accept the devastating long term effects of pesticides. Plants have been known to produce their own natural ‘pesticide’ to deal with the onslaught of bugs. Through organic gardening, you have the chance to free yourself from these damaging chemicals as well as preservatives. The soil you will be using is full of rich vitamins and minerals as opposed to whatever they are doing on the other farms for the public. Take a look at many of the scientific studies which have concluded that pesticides are known to cause cancers and other health problems.

5) The Ability to Save Money

It goes without saying that to grow your own produce will save greatly on your annual food bill! However, you can also use your own produce to realise further savings. One example is tomato sauce. Spaghetti and other pastas are family favourites, but instead of shopping for some strange and expensive brand, take some of our fresh tomatoes and create our own sauce. Another benefit from this is the ultimate way that organic gardening saves money by you not having to buy a lot of fertilizer. You can use kitchen scraps and waste in order to create your own.

All in all, organic gardening has many benefits which not only helps your health, but also the environment. Organic gardening is by far the most healthy and inexpensive way to eat healthy and live longer.

As I sit writing this article, the sun is streaming in and I have just opened a window, (on a catch), in an attempt to get some fresh air. Having just reviewed some crime reports I am still amazed at the lack of security people have with regards to their houses, sheds and cars. Vehicles that are left unlocked overnight is bad enough but to leave a laptop in full view on the passenger seat. Well need I say more!

In some neighbourhoods 25% of burglaries are due to insecure doors and windows. I appreciate that it is often only for a short period of time. However, it only takes a few seconds for someone to enter your house and steal property or reach through an open window. Please take that little bit of extra care. I would also ask that if you have neighbours who are elderly you keep an eye out on their behalf. Although not common, there was a burglary recently in Thackley

where two men purporting to be from The Water Board had targeted an elderly resident and whilst one distracted her the other went into other rooms and stole money and jewellery. Always check identification badges before you let anyone into your house. CASAC (Community Action and Support Against Crime), is the only firm that is accredited to work on behalf of West Yorkshire Police with regards to protecting your home. They never cold call and are all fully police vetted. Their employees always carry and display police identification badges. They can be contacted on 0845 5192122 or www.casac.org.uk. If any other firm tells you they are working on behalf of the police show then the door immediately and tell either us or trading standards. This time of year often sees an increase in sheds and garages being broken into, please ask yourself is my lawn-mower, hedge trimmers, property marked and how good is my security? There has also been

an increase in nuisance motor-cyclists as the warmer weather arrives. As local residents you can be our eyes and ears. If you see nuisance motor-cyclists please report them to your local police station. We want to know where they are being ridden and where the bikes are being stored. With your assistance we can reduce the threat and menace those riders cause in your neighbourhood. My team based at Eccleshill have seized nine bikes in the last month. There are a series of police stations being open for public viewing and a chance to see how we work. Additionally there will be stalls from our partner agencies. See dates above. Please come and visit us, it is totally free and children are especially welcome. Finally I hope we have a crime-free summer and fingers crossed for some good weather.

In aid of Marie Curie Hospice

St Gemma’s would like to say a special thank you to award-winning restaurant, Kebabeesh, in Greengates, Bradford, for organising their second annual charity dinner on Tuesday 27th April 2010 in aid of the Hospice.

The evening was a fantastic mix of excellent food, entertainment, an auction and a raffle and raised a grand total of £1,527. Tracie Harrison, fundraiser for the Hospice said: “This is a fantastic amount and we are indebted to Jehangir Durrani and all the staff at Kebabeesh for holding this event in order to raise the vital funds we need to care for terminally ill patients. If it wasn’t for the generosity of Kebabeesh and the guests who attended the event this amount of money would not have been raised.” Owner Jehangir Durrani, chose to support St Gemma’s Hospice after they cared for his mother, Zahida Shahnaz. The family were very grateful for the care and support St Gemma’s provided to the whole family during that time. St Gemma’s Hospice, based in Moortown, Leeds, provides specialist medical and nursing care for local people

with life threatening illnesses, predominantly cancer, and support for their families too. Care provided is free of charge to patients and their families so St Gemma’s relies on donations and local fundraising initiatives in the community.

Ladies Driving Challenge:Can you stand the heat?

On 6 June 2010, The Fire Fighters Charity will visit Manby Motorplex, Nr Louth, Lincs to give women the chance to drive a once in a lifetime variety of large and unusual vehicles in the ‘Ladies Driving Challenge’. Participants will be able to try their hand at manoeuvring a range of different vehicles such as Fire Engines, 4x4’s, HGV’s, JCB’s and possibly tractors all kindly donated by local companies.

Event Organiser, Laura Harden, said “The third annual Ladies Driving Challenge promises to be an exciting day, with the chance to operate a fantastic collection of vehicles often associated with male drivers. Other types of driving event can be uncomfortably competitive with an emphasis on speed, and this has been known to put off some women. The Women-only Challenge is much more relaxed with the focus on handling vehicles with skill and enjoying new experiences, as well as raising money for a good cause. Last year we raised around £10,000 and we want help in exceeding that this year.’ All women over the age of 17 with a full driving licence are welcome to join in the fun during either the morning or afternoon sessions. Registration costs £10 and entrants are asked to raise a minimum of £90 in sponsorship. Every participant receives a certificate and goody bag and those who raise £120+ receive a T-Shirt, those who raise £150+ receive a T-Shirt and a Blaze Teddy Bear. There are prizes for the Top Fundraisers including a Voucher for 18 holes of Golf and 3 guests at Kenwick Park Golf Club, a half-hour Golf Lesson with Michael Langford, Kenwick Park Golf Club’s professional, a family Health and Leisure Club Full Use Pass for 2 adults and 2 children at Kenwick Park Hotel or a £15 Voucher for Halfords and a Wax and Wash Car Kit. All proceeds from the event will go to The Fire Fighters Charity. Laura Harden explained, “Behind the fun, there is a very

serious message that we are supporting those heroic fire fighters who risk their lives for us. When they run into a burning building, there is always the very real risk of serious injury, and when the worst happens not only fire fighters suffer, but also their families. The Fire Fighters Charity is the only charity dedicated to supporting fire fighters and their families in times of need and helping to speed their recovery back to operational duty.”

The event is raising funds for The Fire Fighters Charity – the official organisation which supports injured fire fighters. Every year, thousands of fire fighters are injured whilst protecting the public. Every 37 seconds in the UK, fire fighters are called to an incident, putting their lives on the line, and often sustaining physical injuries whilst carrying out their duties. The Fire Fighters Charity is here for fire fighters during their times of need, and assists over 17,000 individuals every year, by providing pioneering treatment and support services.

Charlie Hollings has been named as the second driver to compete for Chad Racing in the FIA GT3 European Championship 2010, alongside French driver Damien Charveriat. Charlie had his first

experience of the Ferrari 430 Scuderia at Brno in the Czech Republic last weekend.

The 27 year old Yorkshireman will be driving for the leading British team in the

championship, which will take place across Europe over the next six months. Some of the most prestigious names in motor-racing will also be participating, including Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, Lamborghini and Corvette. The two one hour races, which take place every round, will be streamed live on the sports channel Motors TV. Due to the last minute signing, there was no opportunity for testing before Charlie arrived in the Czech Republic. Laps were also limited because of red flags during the three practice sessions on Friday, so qualifying was the first real chance for Charlie to get to grips with the car.

“The team and the car will be great, and I’m completely confident this will be a storming year.”

Ferrari...Hollings said, “It was great to get behind the wheel last weekend, and it gave us an opportunity to really learn more about the car and find out where we stand against the competition. Both Damien and I learnt more, and completed more laps, in the races themselves than during the rest of the weekend put together. Changing weather conditions meant different tyre choices for the races and

things definitely didn’t always go our way. However we have a very fast car, good data and experience to build on, and Damien and I have worked together many times before and know each other’s strengths. So, I’m really looking forward to the next round at Jarama in Spain and the rest of the season. The team and the car will be great, and I’m completely confident this will be a storming year.”

Headingley Carnegie Stadium has been at the heart of many English sporting success stories over the last 120 years and patriotic fans will be hoping that the latest chapter will be written here this summer.

The stadium will host a fan park for all of England’s World Cup group matches, with the action beamed live from South Africa so that fans can watch Fabio Capello’s team as they go for World Cup glory. The action will be shown live on Yorkshire CCC’s giant replay screen (1), which is the biggest screen in the country, with fans able to sit on the cricket outfield and enjoy all the action. The event will be free of charge* to enter, with spectators able to relax on the grass. Food and drink will also be available for members of the public to purchase at the ground. England’s first match in the World Cup is against the USA on Saturday 12th June, then they take on Algeria on Friday 18th June before they complete the group stage against Slovenia on Wednesday 23rd June. Commenting on the World Cup Party Yorkshire CCC Sales and Marketing Director Richard Kaye said, “With England having just won the ICC World Twenty20 Cup I can’t imagine a more fitting venue than the world famous Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground for everyone to come along and watch our footballers try and follow suit in June and July. As we get closer to the World Cup clearly everyone is going to get

more excited about our chances so we look forward to welcoming the public, and especially families, to come along and enjoy the games her at the ground.” This afternoon Headingley Carnegie will host top class Rugby League and cricket action and Leeds Rugby Commercial Director Rob Oates believes that this weekend and the World Cup initiative are great examples of how the two companies are benefiting from a growing relationship. He added, “This is another great joint initiative between Yorkshire CCC and Leeds Rugby. We want to make Headingley Carnegie THE venue to watch England at the World Cup this summer. “Summer is a time when Headingley Carnegie comes alive with Super League and county and Test cricket taking place but we would be naive to ignore the opportunities that exist with the World Cup. We can either close our doors to it or invite people to come in and enjoy our fantastic facilities whilst cheering the national team on and we are looking forward to having everyone here for all of England’s games. “Since we launched the idea of the fan park, the response has been fantastic, particularly from families. Being able to go on the cricket outfield means the whole family can enjoy the game together, rather than in a packed pub or busy city centre venue, it will be a fantastic atmosphere as always at Headingley Carnegie for massive sporting occasions,” added Oates.

Whilst Leeds Rhinos star Ryan Bailey was helping his side record a fantastic win over local West Yorkshire rivals Bradford Bulls on Sunday evening, the forwards home in Stanningley was being ransacked by burglars.

Amongst the items stolen were Bailey’s historic four Grand Final winners rings. The rings are presented to each member of the Grand Final winning team at Old Trafford and Bailey is one of only seven players to have played in all four of the Rhinos successes since 2004. The rings are only produced for the Final and have a distinctive design incorporating the S logo of Super League. Commenting on the robbery Bailey said, “I am devastated. A lot of the other things that were taken can be replaced but I can never replace how much those rings mean to me. They have some very special memories and I have earned them through years of hard work and determination, they are not just a piece of jewellery that you can buy. I would love to get them back, I’m not sure that whoever took them realised how sentimental they are. In terms of cost they are not worth that much but to me they are priceless. Thankfully my family was not at home at the time so at least they were safe but it has certainly shaken them up.”

Anyone has any information about the missing Grand Final rings should contact the Police at Weetwood Police Station on 0845 6060606 or they can contact the club at [email protected] and we will pass the information on.

Tuesday 25th May 2010 marked the fifth annual return of the Bradford Tag Tournament. With the sky dark and thick of clouds, 560 young people arrived ready to storm the Grattan Stadium Odsal and compete for the Tag Winners Title.

The event, a collaborative effort between South Bradford School Sports Partnership, the Bradford Bull’s Community Foundation, and both the RFL and RFU, has become a major school calendar event, inviting all those throughout the Bradford district to compete to be crowned Bradford Tag Champions! A credit to both themselves and their schools, 125 young people from Bradford College, BBEC, Bradford Academy, Dixons City Academy, Tong High School and Thornton Grammar School also worked extremely hard on the day to ensure the event ran smoothly, fulfilling vital roles such as Leaders, Pitch Officials and Referees- with a special mention to Aaron Scholes, Emma Stead, Lewis Berkinshaw and Nathan Anderson for their

professionalism, commitment to their role and outstanding leadership. After fierce competition, a lot of sweat and a few bumps and scrapes, the league winners were as follows: League 1: Heaton Primary School; League 2: Hollingwood Primary School; League 3: Home Farm Primary School; League 4: Shibden Head Primary School; League 5: St Anthony’s Primary School; League 6: Newhall Park Primary School; League 7: Russell Hall Primary School and League 8: St Pauls Primary School. As lunchtime approached, proud event sponsors, Subway, kindly provided all with much-needed refreshments and the crowd were entertained by cheerleaders from St Anthony’s Primary School and Bradford Academy. Finally, after a tense final, Shibden

Head Primary School was crowned by Pennine Trophies Ltd as the overall winner and progresses to represent Bradford in the TAG to Twickenham competition, with second place Hollingwood Primary and third place Russell Hall going forward to represent Bradford at the West Yorkshire Youth Games, so the best of luck! Claire Caunce, Partnership Development Manager for South Bradford SSP, said: “This event is always a great day. It brings children from around the city together to compete for the title. And today just proves the weather doesn’t always have to be fantastic to make it an excellent day. The feedback from schools has been brilliant and I’m looking forward to next year. The young people in our city are extraordinary young people and deserve the accolade to go with it’.

Well that’s another season over with and the worst finishing position in the clubs history since 1981 but far from being saddened by the prospect of another year in the 4th tier of English football the signs are looking good.

With the appointment of Peter Taylor we have seen a turnaround in fortunes on the field with us going unbeaten in the last 6 games with 4 wins to our credit. Peter seems to have breathed new life into Valley Parade both on the field and behind the scenes. A new state of the art training facility has been found at Weetwood Hall in L666s, pity Bradford doesn’t have one but this was a requirement of a forward thinking manager. Also work on the Valley Parade cabbage patch has begun which will see a brand new playing surface next season with better drainage hopefully enabling a better quality of football.

Just 2 weeks after the season finished Peter Taylor has secured the services of a few senior professionals for next season who were out of contract and also signed Robbie Trelfall and Luke Oliver who were on loan last season, he seems to know his exact targets to add to the playing staff. In fact speaking to many City fans the majority seem well impressed with our new manager. The club have also announced a new deal with Radio L666s to cover all City’s games for the next 3 years, the club came in for some well earned criticism last pre season when it announce home games would not be covered, thankfully fans not able to attend games will be able to tune in again and listen to the games with Derm Tanner in the commentary box. On a sombre note this year marked the 25th anniversary of the Valley Parade fire disaster and on the 11th of May in Centenary Square upwards of two thousand people

gathered to pay their respects to the victims. It was a very emotional day with a service lead by the Archbishop of York John Sentamu where many people and groups laid wreaths and floral tributes at the memorial dedicated to the victims of the fire. Later in the day a quieter but well attended ceremony took place at Valley Parade. Throughout the weeks leading up to this television companies had filmed their documentaries and it must be said they were all done in a very sympathetic and dignified way. Many people feel the tragedy is a forgotten one compared to Hillsborough and Heyschel but the people of Bradford will never forget the tragic events of 11th May 1985. Because of this awful event the Bradford Burns Unit was started to carry out research into the treatment, repair and reconstruction of lost, injured and deformed body parts as a result of burns, cancer, trauma and birth defects. Bradford City fans have responded well to an appeal to raise at least £100,000 for the Burns Unit, this target is expected to be passed very soon. Groups and individually have all played their part in raising money by various means. The Shipley Bantams have raised around £3000 with various events taken place like 11 year old Jess Tavendale of Shipley who suggested her school Shipley Primary hold a none uniform day, other members like myself and Joe Szalkiewicz walked the 3 peaks. It was strange walking the peaks and being stopped by people asking what we had to remember 25 years ago as the T shirts said ’25 years remember’. Talking of T shirts it was heartening to find so many Northampton Town fans wanting to buy them at our last home game of the season to contribute to our appeal, of course they wanted the Claret coloured ones to match their home kit but it was a great gesture by a good set of football fans. It’s just a pity that a small minority of people wanted to spoil the day with the customary last game pitch invasion. So after a disappointing season we can all look forward to a new season with great optimism, all we need now for the summer months is an England team to bring back the World Cup from South Africa. Take care and have a great couple of months before the Bantams start rolling again.

United are Back!Leeds United are back in the Championship after ending a three-year exile. The club beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 at Elland Road on the final day of the season to secure a long-awaited return to football’s second tier.

The victory was greeted with wild celebrations at Elland Road as thousands of fans celebrated with the players and management. “This means so much to everybody connected with this club,” said delighted Grayson manager Simon Grayson. “The staff, the players, and the people behind the scenes have all worked so hard to achieve this. “Winning any promotion is a great achievement, but to do it as manager of the club I supported and the club where I started my career is something else. “It really is a great achievement and everyone should be so proud.”

In keeping with the nature of United’s season, it was a far from straightforward afternoon.Max Gradel was red carded in the first half and when Bristol Rovers went 1-0 up in the game, Charlton Athletic, who were winning at Oldham, were suddenly propelled into the promotion spot. But substitute Jonny Howson levelled the scores before Jermaine Beckford secured the win - and promotion - with a second goal moments later. “We don’t seem to do things the

easy way here, but I always had a confidence and belief in the players,” said the boss. “Okay, we left it to the last day, had ten men, and came from a goal behind, but the players have showed the desire, not only on Saturday, but on other days as well. “The crowd made up for the loss of Max and the atmosphere was incredible. I think we’ve all been through every emotion possible these past nine months. “It was all about getting the team, the club, and the city promoted, and we’re back in a league we deserve to be in.”
