Texas Statute: NPA §301.306 and Rule 216.3(5) - January 2006 Effective September 1, 2005, the Nursing Practice Act (NPA) was amended, adding the CNE requirement: Forensic Evidence Collection in Continuing Education. This targeted CNE requirement applies to all nurses practicing in emergency department (ED) settings as their home unit, floating, contracted, or other duties that involve functioning in an ED setting or role. This is a one-time requirement per nurse effective September 1, 2006. There is no expiration date for this requirement under Texas Occupations Code 301.306 (NPA); thus any nurse working for any amount of time in the ED must comply and maintain the course completion certificate indefinitely.
This presentation will provide nurses with the knowledge and skills related to care of physical and sexual assault patients so they can accurately and completely assess and document care while obtaining potential evidence using the appropriate chain of evidence. Learner Objectives:
Discuss the definition of forensics, with examples and applicable laws governing the definition
Describe the components of the primary and focused secondary survey in a forensics patient
Describe the nursing assessment of patients with trauma
Apply information on evidence collection and chain of evidence to selected forensic diagnosis
Discuss documentation principles
This course fulfills the Texas Board of Nursing Forensic Requirement for Licensure
