    NEWS FLASH

    from THE JAMAICA CHRISTIAN

    BOYS' HOME

The Dedication of our new Chapel building, February 28th, \ms alovely success. We are deeply indebted to Minister Hal Brov/n andhis \^fe i-zho so kindly cari:e to Jamaica to help in a week of meetings

s vrell as for Dedication day. It v;as also our great pleasure tohave Mrs. Ernest H. Wray \^ith us, wife of our beloved Pastor in \irtiose

; "memory the Chapel was built. Surely God lias blesse:! the opening of:^;ihe Chapel and the days that have folloi-jed have been days of enjoy

ment in its use. Our School also enjoys using it for daily Chapel. There is still a debt on the Chapel of or L205.0,0, It

is truly a small debt considering the expense and short time of ourconstruction i^rork. But bills must be paid. The hardvrare stores arebein.q; patient and each week we lay back a bit toiv'ard the debts. Because of you \>rho are still helping, mo are able to do this.

Wedding bells rang for the first time in the Chapel, March 20th,x^en Lorraii-.e McKay and Carl Steviart were united in Marraige. It wasa beautiful wedding and Lorraine, formerly a Wortley girl, alovely bride. We extend our vary best v^dshes to them.

Now that the Chapel is finished, ive^ire doing a bit of remodlingin the school. Our P.T.A. had a tea at the close of school and thechildren did well with their program, '.ife now have approximately 70boys and girls in our Christian Day School and four good teachers.

Carnp tifiie is approaching and we are hoping to have 100 campersthis year. This xd.ll be an increase of our number last year of 66.Guy Wiitley, better knoivn to all the campers as "Broth -r Guy" is nowin the States traveling in behalf of the Home, We all miss him sorelyand are looking forward to his return in June, after a three months'leave.

Somehow, sandwiched between our many activities of the past twoweeks, vie have done a bit of thinking concerning the future of ourboys. Ri^t now, there is a situation that presents a growing pro-

'blem. And it is simply this, "OUR BOYS AHS GROWING." And the oO^pthey get, the larger they grow and the more space they need. Their

grooms are terribly small for their number and we must face facts. Inlast Director's'meeting xve decided to call in an architect and

'^have him sketch soue plans for a new ^nnitory.

WE HAVE NO FUNDS FOR A DORMITORY. But, we believe that God isable to provide for this nex^ building in the same xvonderful vsy thatHe has done in the past. Will you pray x/ith us about this great undertaking? If you have any suggestions, please let us hear from you.

And now, we want to thank you, each one, from the depths of ourhearts for the wonderful xray in which you have helped us so far thisyear. We are in need as each nex-r day davms, but as x/e have need, wehave the care of our Father, and we are grateful. Thanks so much forhelping1

    Faithfully yours.

    From

Four and a half years ago, God provided a homefor our family of six boys.

Now, our growing family of sixteen are enjoyingthe benefits of a happy, wholesome, and Christianway of life.

These benefits are made possible by friends wholove little children. Your gifts provide milk for growing boys, education for keen minds, and Christiantraining for seeking hearts.

Our needs increase as the boys grow. We face aheavy mortgage payment each month, and the costof living has increased in Jamaica this past year.

Yes, your gifts mean life to our family. May wetake this opportunity of saying "thanks so much".

Please remember us in your prayers.

On leave in May and JuneGuy Whitley, who has served the Home faith

fully, plans to go on leave for two months at theend of his two years of service. This will be in Mayand June. He has well earned a holiday and yet hisunselfish nature has led him to devote almost hisentire leave in presenting the work of the Home tofriends in the States.

If you care to contact him for speaking engagements, kindly write.

    DORMITORY FUND BEGUN

    KENNETH AND EDDIE

Need is always our reason for buildinsprojects need for a family of healthy, happy, and lively little men. Their needis our desire, our goal, and our prayer.

College Park Christian Church in Atlanta, Georgia, has' a Sunday School class ofyoung people, some of them married. Theysaw our need and sent the first gift forthe new dormitory, a check for $25.00.We admire the faith of these young peoplein starting off a project that should meanlife and hope for many little Jamaicanboys.

This is only a small beginning, but weknow that great projects have to have astart. Yes, need is leading us on. Theboys are growing and twelve in one roomis not satisfactory. More room with fewerboys' to a room, can make a great difference in happy, successful family life.

And, is it possible that other boys willfind a haven of security and love? Thatmust be decided by friends of these littieones, through whom God can provide!

    KENNETH and the Donkey Cart

The milkman's old donkey came plodding down the drive with a new wagon. Can you imagine the excitement! All siX'teen boys gathered round, Kenneth leadingthe noise. As soon as the man went tothe house, Kenneth said bravely. "I canget up on the seat and drive it." NowKenneth is a bragger, and in spite of theprotests of the other boys, he bravelyclimbed to the seat.

A moment later, his friend Gordon whoalways likes a joke, shouted to the donkey '"Giddap!" Before the startled eyesof all his audience, Kenneth and his wagonwent rolling out through the gate. NowKenneth by this time had lost all hisbravery and began shouting, wailing andbawling for help. When the milkmancaught up with the wagon and removedKenneth, nothing could stop the little boy.He ran as fast as he could, never stoppeduntil he reached upstairs to his bed. thensat down quietly to calm his frightenedheart. (Did you see Kenneth's picture onthe front page?)

    BATTEN DOWN For Abby

Dear Boys and Girls,There was a hurricane that was sup

posed to come to Jamaica but itdidn't. We got all the boys in the houseand all the boards on the porch. In thenight when the boys were asleep but wewere not, Mommy and Daddy and Bro. Guygot the nails and boards and worked hardto batten down fhe place so the hurricanewouldn't take us away, and it was fouro'clock in the morning when they went'.0 bed.

In the morning they took down all thebatten down and we went out to playcricket. The name of the hurricane wasAbby.

    NURSERY SCHOOL GRADUATION

Did you ever graduate? Our little fiveyear olds have, and they were very excitedabout the whole thing. There were thirty-two boys and girls in the Nursery Schoolhere at the Home this past term, and fifteen of them reached the age for graduation to the Prep School, or to what you

    -might call the first grade.

The Chapel was decorated with flowersand the whole school assembled in theirSunday best, looking very sweet. Mothersand Dads looked on with great pride. Aftersongs, recitations, and speeches, the graduates came out dressed in white caps andblue gowns. Howard Bolton, master ofceremonies, awarded each one a diplomafor doing such nice work in school. Ourown Clive and Bobby were among thosewho graduated.

    "MORTGAGE REDUCED BY JULYPAYMENT"

Four good reasons were expressed to ourfriends in our June newsletter concerningthe July first mortgage payment on theHome. It is with great joy that we writenow to tell you how God has answeredprayer again.

We were able to pay a total of $953.00in July, and this, with the $280.00 that wepaid monthly since Feb. 1st., and whichwas applied July 1st. means that the mortgage has been reduced to $9,600.00(3,400.0.0.)

You would be encouraged if we couldfind space here to list all those who havecontributed to this payment. Friends fromfar and near have helped, friends fromJamaica and from America, and to eachand every one we extend a most heartfeltword of thanks. May God bless you.

This payment, along with the fact thatour Chapel is now paid for, means that weare nearer to the time when we mightsafely begin our dormitory. We hope tomake another payment at the end of theyear on the mortgage, and then begin actualwork in the new year on the dormitory. Are these things possible? Pray with us for the sake of little boys!

  • THE JAMAICA CHRISTIAN BOYS' HOME

    WHAT WE HAVE NOW

Sixteen boys, ranging in age from three to nine, are in the Home.Other boys have found brief shelter in the Home in times of urgency. Our boys come from parishes all over the island and represent everyrace commonly known to be living in Jamaica. The basis for admittance to the HOME is need and no child is accepted or rejected because of colour, class, or creed.

Ths HOME is a CHRISTIAN HOME, not an orphanage. It isintended that the Home always honour God and His Holy Word. There are two family groups of two and three boys. No institutionalcomplex exists with the boys, and they have a feeling of securitywhich comes from a HOME where there is love and understanding.

We have a host of friends who are regular with their encouragement as well as their contributions, including several firms in Jamaica who are generous with discounts and weekly gifts to the HOME.We have been blessed with the faithful unselfish service of Dr. NoelC. March who watches over the health of the boys. Other specialistshelp when needed. We also have a good dentist, Dr. Henry Lopez, who donates the children's dental work.

The property of the Jamaica Christian Boys' Home is vested ina Limited Liability Company of which James and Carol Herget aremanaging directors. They are assisted by a board of Directors, min

We have, above all else, a livingGod Who hears and answers prayer and Who has never let us downnor forsaken us. He has givenstrength to those who labour andhas provided our needs.

  • EDUCATIONThe school system in Jamaica is divided into two groups Gov

ernment schools and private schools. The JAMAICA CHRISTIANDAY SCHOOL, a private school for boys and girls, was establishedat the home in 1956, because of the growing expense of privateschool fees for our boys and because of the possibility of a closerwatch-care over their moral, social, and spiritual growth. Jamaicanfriends have encouraged and assisted the growth cf the school.

Four qualified teachers are employed for the school and buildings are airy and cheerful. A special feature of the "Nursery School"is the provision for working parents to leave their children all day.

Enrolment in the school has reached seventy. An annual "SportsDay" is held as well as an annual Christmas play. School opens witha devotional period in the chapel building, and a weekly session isheld for Bible Songs and Stories, and Educational movies. Musiclessons and Scouting is also a part of our boys' education.

A high standard of education isbeing maintained for children fromthe ages of three to nine years, and the motto of the school is,"A School with A Chrisfian Environment".

    RELIGION

The Home is a non-denominational Home and we accept boysfrom any creed. On the Homeproperty, we have a lovely Chapelbuilding where our boys worship. The services, open to friends ofthe Home and the general public,

are held regularly each Sunday morning and Sunday evening, as wellas in the mid-week. An active wide-awake Sunday School is heldeach Sunday morning.

New Testament Christianity is taught, using the Bible asthe only creed book. The doctrine of baptism, and the weekly ob-pervance of the Lord's Supper are maintained.

The boys provide a lovely "Boys' Choir".CAMP

In 1958, Grier Park Christian Camp was established to aid in;he recreational, social, and spiritual growth of the boys. This camp, held each summer for boys and girls of Jamaica, has been made possible by Alumina Jamaica. Two large buildings provide dormitories, dining hall, chapel and game rooms, while outside courts provideplay area for tennis, badminton, and other games. Beautiful rollingcountry-sides make "camp" everything it should be. We are gratefulto Alumina Jamaica for their kindness.

The HOME uses the camp site at other holiday times in theyear for a healthful "getting away from the city" break.

  • BEFORE THE HOME BEGAN

returned to Jamaica afterhavmg previously spent one year in the Island. They came withn?p ^ Of buildmg a Home for children even though theseplans did not materialize until 1954. While becoming better acquaintedwith Jamaica and planning the establishment of the Home, they didmi sionary work both in the city and in the country. In IgSS^heybuilt a home of their own with personal funds that they had receivedboth for wages and from compensation from an accident. Just beforemoving mto their home, they took a two year old Jamaican boy whowas in need of help, and cared for him as their own. Five monthslater they took another boy. Prayerful planning began at this timeto estabhsh a Home for boys, and in August of 1954 the JamaicaChristian Boys Home was begun with the coming of a third littleboy into the Herget's home.

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE HOMEGrowth was slow but steady in the early months. Another boy

entered the Home in December of 1954 and a room was added to theHouse. In 1955, application was made for a Government license fora Home for boys and this was granted in temporary form in August.A search began for a site for a permanent Home for the boys, andresulted in the purchase of a beautiful home and property at No. 7Oxford Road, Kingston 5. God wonderfully provided the funds forthe down-payment of this property through generous friends of theboys in America, and some friends in Jamaica.

In January, 1957, the Jamaican government granted the Homea permanent license for 12 boys and increased it to 20 in 1959.

The Home was established so that little boys of Jamaica mightfind love and care, and a future with security. Their smiling facestell how they feel about theSrHome.

    OUR HOPES FORFUTURE

We hope to educate and prepareboys for a life of service to theirchurch, fellow-men and to theircountry.

We hope to merit the continuedconfidence of the friends of theHome.

We hope to grow financially sothat we might help many otherneedy boys.

We hope to build a Home pleasing to our Lord.

  • ANSWERING YOUR QUESTIONSHow long will we keep the boys? We like to answer this question

for It calls for the utmost.of-faith in God for the future. As He leadsn boys as long as you would keep your boy. We areIn ^ f T education and will carry it throughto the fullest of their mental capacity. As long as they behave them

selves, we will protect them and care for them until they take theirplace m the community as adults. Each child has the opportunity ofbecommg a Christian citizen.

Do the boys work? They are all young, yet we are already train-mg them to make their beds, rake leaves, care for the chickens andgarden and do ordinary chores. We want the boys to be industriousana to shun idle hours.

What can we do to help? Used clothing and shoes can be sent.Address your box to the Home and mark it, "For free distribution".Money orders or personal cheques may be sent. (Air-mail postagefrom America is ten cents.)

How much would it cost me to support a boy in the Home? Some friends have "financially adopted" a boy. You may do so, too.and this would cost S25.00 per month, or 8 10. 0 Some friendspartially support a boy. This is gratefully accepted

WHAT WE DO NOT HAVEWe do NOT have an endowment fund or large bank account that

carries us from month to month. God meets our needs as we lookto Him in faith. He has helped us to meet our obligations promptlyand our credit rating is good.

We do NOT have paid money raisers, nor do we receive a Government Grant.

We are NOT affiliated with any missionary or benevolent organization.

We do NOT give out boys for adoption. We do NOT have room or money to care for all the applicants

    to the Home.

YOU ARE INVITEDWe invite you to visit the Home at any time. Our boys enjoy the

visits of guests and friends, and will show you a cordial welcome.Local visitors are thrilled with the Home and its programme.

Lady Foot, wife of our former Governor of Jamaica, after hervisit to the Home, wrote, "I was very interested to meet your children and it was heart warming to see that little people who had noparents and no home have now been given these priceless treasures."

Our present Governor's wife laid the cornerstone for our newChapel building.

Occasionally we have visitors from the United States and theirwords of pleasure and amazement over the Home are most encouraging. They return to their homes to tell others of this work.

You are invited to visit, to tell your friends about the Home, and to write for information. If you are already a contributor, youowe it to yourself to come and see this MONUMENT OF FAITH.

    A HAPPYCHRISTMAS

    TO ALL

    VOL. 6 DECEMBER, 1960 NO. 3

    HOMECOMING

Our cup of joy was full and runningover when we were greeted at the airportby our precious little family of sixteenboys. Hugs and tears and kisses mingledtogether while "Grandma". "Brother Guy",and several friends gathered at the edge ofthe circle.

After finally leaving the airport we drovehome with old familiar voices of our children ringing out with choriif.es. The musicpenetrated deep into our hearts and madeus know at last that we were home.

Reaching the Home, we were directedto enter at the Chapel gate, Slowly thedoors opened and we viewed a most beautiful scene our new pews assembled andthe Chapel decorated with lovely tropicalliowers. As we stood at the open door theorgan, played by Miss Wocidstock, pealedforth with "Praise God From Whom AllBlessings Flow." Jim then asked forsilence and with heads bowed we heardhim lift his voice in thanksgiving for safetyof travel and for health and blessings uponour family.

In the house there were baskets of flowers from friends, "Welcome Home" cakes, and a host of folks who just dropped in.

It was good to visit friends in America we were blessed in seeing you all. butnow we must say that it is good to be homeag'ain, and to face the future with newzeal, a fresh outlook, and greater faith toward making the Jamaica Christian Boys'Home an even greater blessing to Jamaicathan it has been in the p?st.
