Priory Emmaus Maarssen

Monasteries, churches and other religious buildings cannot achieve a viable exploitation due to the decrease in the number of nuns, monks and church visitors. Therefore many of these buildings will become vacant. In villages and cities people value these buildings in their context and are aware of their significance.

The priory Emmaus on the country estate Doornburgh in Maarssen has lost its function and will developed into a public building where art and science meet. It will also house a luxurious boutique hotel. This Bossche School building of the architect Jan de Jong is a listed building. It represents contemplation and a careful composition around an inner courtyard. But can this valuable heritage building accommodate this specific new functions for which it was not designed?

What potential does it hold, what can its historic character contribute, and what dilemmas need to be resolved to realize a future-proofed re-use?

This design course will provide lessons in Heritage & Architecture. The educational method offers all the necessary components to develop the design strategy, in lectures, by experts and theory. We give students their own responsibility for developing their own work method.

Durable NeighbourhoodsRedesigning Presikhaaf

Around 1965 the neighbourhood of Presikhaaf in Arnhem was completed according to the ideas of CIAM about living, working, leisure and education. With various residential districts arranged around a shopping centre and a park a unique spatial composition was created. The character of the districts differs by typology, density and orientation.

Nowadays the area is undergoing a significant transformation as a result of changes in social demands and requirements. The renewal of some areas and the shopping centre has a significant impact on the spatial composition as well as on the socio-economic setting. For various reasons, in the residential areas some of the social facilities and commercial spaces have become obsolete, resulting in vacancy.

The design assignment concerns the adaptation of a specific architectural ensemble or building in the neighbourhood. The design should be strongly related to contextual research, defining values concerning historical traces, common narratives and multiple identities of places, the architectural layers of time in built structures, as well as present conditions in order to develop a proper new use and a durable future.

Initially, the work in the studio will be done in groups while the end result is an individual design.
