Heritage Haggling Roles

President of the Greenhills Historical Society

You are against the idea of the building being demolished. You are very interested in the history

of Greenhills of Greenhills and you conduct tours of the old theatre for tourists. You do not

think that Greenhills needs new places. You think it is important to hold on to important places

from the past.

Parent

You are against the idea of the theater being demolished. As a child, you used to go to the

movies every Saturday at the Royal Theater and you still take your grandchildren there. It is a

part of your family life- a place to see friends and celebrate special occasions.

Teenager who lives in Greenhills

You love the idea of an entertainment centre being built in Greenhills. You often get bored on

the weekends and you think this would be an exciting place to go. You think that Greenhills has

too many old places and there should be more modern places. You would like to get some part

time work after school and you think that there might be some jobs at the new centre.

Developer of the entertainment centre

Of course, you think that the entertainment centre would be a great idea. You know that it will

make quite a bit of money and you have promised the historical society some of the money to

help maintain other old buildings. You have built an entertainment centers in other cities and

they have been very popular.

Councilor

You haven’t made up your mind about the problem. You are willing to listen to everyone at the

meeting and to help people come up with some solutions. You think that the centre might be

good for the young people in the area but you are a bit worried about the demolishing such a

precious building.

Reflection

My lesson plan

Generally, in planning my lesson (Heritage Haggling), I have tried to do my best

to:

- assist students to make links between their understandings and their experience in

the real world

- enable the students to make choices and develop their belief that they can be

effective participants in society

- provide further insight into students’ understanding about the importance of

preserving past heritage

- Use technology to deliver my teaching (using SMART board)

If I do the same activity again, I will:

- Plan to ask students to do role play (act out their understanding about their roles in

“Heritage Haggling”

- Ask students to find similar cases happening in the society related to the topic (the

importance of preserving the past heritage)

- Give more time for students to discuss with their group

My learning resources

During the planning

I got the idea of teaching from “Integrating Socially: Planning integrated units of works for social education” by Kate Murdoch and Julie Hamston”. The book is very inspiring since it provides opportunities for young learners to explore and clarify values, discuss issues, solve problems, make decisions, and act on the understanding they have developed about what happening around them.

I also discussed with my partner about the lesson that we were about to teach. I found partner can give more of effective feedback in running the lesson.

During Planning, Teaching and Learning

- I use SMART board software to deliver my teaching I find SMART board is very useful for me to get students’ focus and for accommodating different learning styles and needs as it is interactive.

- I use SMART board application in grouping students (Group generator) I have just tried this application and find out that the application is quite helpful for grouping the students. in the future, I’ll do another more application from SMART board which is easier and fairer.

Page 6: Heritage Haggling - WordPress.com...You haven’t made up your mind about the problem. You are willing to listen to everyone at the meeting and to help people come up with some solutions

- I use Encarta online dictionaries to search for difficult words so that the students get clearer understanding about the difficult terms There are some terms that might be difficult for some students and it needs more detailed explanation

How would I do differently?

- I would explore more SMART board activities to teach more interactively

My interaction with students

I have tried to do my best in communicating with the students. I’m trying to keep the

classroom environment engaging to accommodate the students learning needs. I give

opportunity for students to speak up their mind during class discussion, group

discussion. I also consistently give them effective feedback and positive responses to

what they share. To deal with the challenging students, I need to keep consistently

model the learner profiles and attitudes.

My classroom management

I use some strategies that I find them useful:

- The use of technology

The use of SMART board and another digital tool in teaching,

- Students behavior management:

Keep reminding students to speak English, raise their hands, have one person

speak at a time.

How would I do differently?

I would stay consistent to deal with challenging students by giving them more strict

response, especially if they disturb other friends. Also, I am going to consistently giving

the students rewards and positive comments and feedback for their learning progress.

My language of instruction

I would:

Consistently use proper English as a language of instruction

. In daily basis, I constantly encourage students to consistently use English when speaking with teachers and friends.

Give clear instruction and explanation to the students in teaching and learning.
