Give your Brain a Workout this New Year

One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to become more active, which is a great goal! But this year, why not also resolve to keep your brain more active, as well? Keep learning. Challenging your brain with mental exercises helps stimulate brain cells, thereby keeping your memory sharp. Read a new book, join a different club, take an online class or even just challenge yourself to a new crossword or jigsaw puzzle. Use all your senses. The more

sense you involve, the more your brain will be involved in a particular process or activity. Try joining a baking club or working with ceramics, noting the feel and scent of the materials as go. Tidy up your life. Reduce clutter around your home and take advantage of calendars, planners, maps and lists to keep track of everyday information. Spending less mental energy on remembering birthdays or appointments frees your mind up to better learn new things.

Take up journaling or write your life story. Writing can improve both your memory and your ability to communicate.

Winter is a great time to grab some greens, since these leafy veggies are currently in season. Stocking up on them is also a great way to help you stick to your New Year’s resolution of living a healthier lifestyle! Kale and spinach are probably the most common of the leafy greens, but there are plenty more options to choose from. Why not add

Winter Greens for a Healthier You

a little protein to your diet with a serving of collard greens? Or supercharge your body with a dose of vitamins A, C and K from Swiss chard. If you’re thinking of cooking with any of these greens, don’t be intimidated; all you really need is a little bit of oil, garlic and some sea salt to cut the bitterness. I recommend flash sautéing them in the oil and garlic, then sprinkling your desired

amount of sea salt on top. It’s a great side dish or a healthy and filling snack between meals.

Leola Bell and Tawatha Kennedy, Resident Assistants

Welcome Tawatha Kennedy and Leola Bell, our new Resident Assistants

We would like to welcome both Tawatha and Leola to Heritage Monona. They came in together to apply for resident assistant roles, then walked back in as co-worker. They both have extensive caregiving experience, with Tawatha having spent 10 years in the field and Leola 15. They recently worked together

at Tender Reflections and decided to make the change together. We are so grateful to have both of them here. They both enjoy their work and have picked up extra shifts when needed. We are happy to have both of you on Monona’s team. It is nice to watch you work with such enthusiasm!

Cindy Wadyka Resident Assistant

We are so proud to recognize Cindy, one of our resident assistants, for all her hard work. Even though she only works for Heritage part time, she definitely has a full-time commitment to the residents that live here. Cindy has worked at Heritage since the beginning and has been a pillar on weekends in the assisted living community. Cindy has comforted many that have lived here, and it’s not uncommon for her to come in during the week just to help pass medications.

Cindy Wadyka, Resident Assistant

Cindy, thank you for all you do for the residents that call Heritage home. We truly appreciate you!
