About Heritage Open DaysHeritage Open Days 2011 will be 8 -11 September

Heritage Open Days are organised by Warwick District Council. This year we have 47 venues for you to see, spanning eight centuries.

The Heritage Open Days are organised as part of the National Heritage Open Days and is sponsored by English Heritage. The aim of the event is to make available buildings and gardens not normally open to the public, either free of charge or where the admission charge is used for charitable purposes.

The opening times and a brief description are set out throughout this publication. Other buildings will be open in the surrounding districts and further information can be obtained about these from the national website www.heritageopendays.org

Originally a drill hall transformed to a comfortable riverside club with the largest ballroom in Leamington Spa. The Association offers the largest display of naval memorabilia in the area, dating back to the Second World War, together with a detailed history of the Royal Naval Association in Leamington Spa.

Built in 1780 in simple Gothic style. Interesting interior with display relating to development of the Chapel and the most famous Minister, William Field who founded the first Sunday School in Warwick and wrote a guide to Warwick in 1816.

Stunning ruin of 18th and 19th Century country house on the banks of the River Avon, is rarely open to the public. 26. Guys Cliffe House

The church was rebuilt by Sir William Wilson 1694-1704 after the destruction of the medieval church in the fire of Warwick of 1694. This curious building has much Gothic spirit. There is a Norman crypt and a fire monument in the Beauchamp Chapel.

Purpose built County Records Office recently refurbished, occupying the site of Warwick Priory (removed to America in the 1920s).‘Medicine Through Time’. Learn about the work of the Records Office and visit our strong rooms. View some original documents to do with medicine and health and see how we treated illnesses in the past. A chance to see and explore a character property that is not always easy to visit.Rebuilt in 1695 after the fire of Warwick in 1694 and extended in mid 18th Century. There will be a small display about Quakers and the history of this Meeting House with members available to answer questions. Cafe open Saturday morning only. St Augustine’s is a small Roman Catholic Church designed by A.W Pugin in 1840. Decorated style built of red brick with stone dressings. Peaceful location.

43. St John The Baptist Church

A church on this site was recorded in Domesday. The perpendicular stone tower, dating from the 14th Century, is pockmarked with shot from the civil war period. The rest of the church was rebuilt in 1844. There are several fine memorials and a rare churching pew. Joseph Arch, MP and founder of the Agricultural Workers Union is buried in the churchyard. Exhibition. Refreshments avalialble.

The church dates from 12th to 15th Century and stands overlooking timber framed houses in the village. All the stained glass windows have local historical interest, including work by Kingsley, William Morris and Phillip Webb. The church also has remains of medieval wall paintings. Fascinating 13th Century sandstone Church with central spirelet. Interior has very fine 15th Century brass to Sir William Bagot and his wife Margaret together with 17th and 18th Century mural tablets and 18th Century paneling. Guides in the church.
