Ideally suited to cool climate growing, Cabernet Franc is quickly gaining a reputation as a principal red wine grape in the Finger Lakes where long, brisk autumns allow for slow ripening. The outcome is a consistently ripe presentation with exceptional depth and body. Cabernet Franc is often used as a base for a blend, but the region is proving that the grape stands well on its own as a full-bodied wine. An alluring black cherry color and a compelling nose precede a palate that is generous and round, marked by vivacious berry flavors, along with savory earth notes and a full structure. Firm tannins grip the tongue, then soften into a flavorsome finish.

Our MethodsAAt Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard, meticulous viticulture and strict ecological standards enable us to produce estate wines of balance, complexity, and focus. We use organic compost and multiple cover crops to promote soil structure and we have eliminated herbicide use to improve biodiversity in our vineyards. All estate fruit is hand-harvested and hand-sorted, ensuring that multiple passes through each row during harvest yield exact levels of ripeness. Our fermentations rely on indigenous yeasts and we eschew all fining and filtering agents. In sum, these efforts guarantee the long term health of our vineyards and have helped to reduce sulfur usage below certified organic levels.

CentCentral to the care we take in our production is the HJW Vine Nursery. The nursery is a source of regional expertise and a platform for tailoring our vineyard approach with careful precision. It is a key link between our healthy soils, robust vines, and the excellence that we strive for in every wine.
