Making the Heart Block:

1. Sew (1) 2½” x 2¾” Fabric 4 B rectangle to the end of (1) 2½” x 3¾” Fabric 5 D rectangle. Press the seam toward the D rectangle.

2. Sew (1) 1½” x 5¾” Fabric 3 E rectangle to the B/D unit starting at the bottom of the D rectangle to the end of the E rectangle as shown. Press the seam toward the Fabric 3 E rectangle.

9. Sew (2) Fabric 1 corner triangles to opposite corners of the heart center. Press the seams toward the corner triangles.

10. Sew (2) Fabric 1 corner triangles to the remaining corners of the heart center. Press the seams toward the corner triangles. Center and trim to measure 9” x 9”.

4. Sew (1) 1½” x 6⅛” Fabric 3 F rectangle to the B/D/E/E unit starting at the bottom of the Fabric 5 E rectangle to the end of the Fabric 5 E rectangle as shown. Press the seam toward the Fabric 3 F rectangle to make the block center.

7. Sew (1) 3⅛” Fabric 4 A triangle to the top le� corner of the heart block. Sew (1) 2¾” Fabric 4 C triangle to the top right of the heart block. Press the seams toward the triangles.

8. Sew (1) 4⅛” Fabric 4 G triangle to each of the bottom corners of the heart unit. Press the seams toward the triangles. Center and trim to 6½” x 6½” to make a heart center.

NOTE: Staystitch around the outside edge of the block ⅛” to reducebias stretch.

5. Place a 6½” square ruler on top of a block center. Position the block center so that the bottom point is centered at 3¼” and the 45˚ line of the ruler runs parallel to the seams as shown.

6. Trim the excess fabric from the three sides as shown to make a heart unit.

1. Sew (2) 1½” x 12½” Fabric 4 rectangles to opposite sides of the heart block. Press the seams toward the Fabric 4 rectangles.

2. Sew (2) 1½” x 14½” Fabric 4 rectangles to the remaining sides of the heart block. Press the seams toward the Fabric 4 rectangles to add border one and measure 14½” x 14½”.3. Sew (2) 2½” x 14½” Fabric 1 rectangles to opposite sides of the heart block. Press the seams toward the Fabric 1 rectangles.

4. Sew (1) 2½” x 18½” Fabric 1 rectangle to the top of the heart block. Press the seams toward the Fabric 1 rectangle to add the top border two.

5. Sew (1) 3½” x 18½” Fabric 1 rectangle to the bottom of the heart block. Press the seams toward the Fabric 1 rectangle to add the bottom border two and make a tote front measuring 18½” x 19½”.

6. With right sides together, pin the tote front to the 18½” x 19½” tote back on the two sides and the bottom.

7. Start at the top and sew down one side, across the bottom and up the opposite side. Press the seams open.

8. Turn the top edge of the tote ¾” to the inside and press well.

9. To box the bottom corners of the tote, bring the side seam to the bottom seam, matching the open seams and forming a triangle with the corner of the tote. Pin the triangle.

Making the Lining:

11. Sew across the triangle on the drawn line. Trim the triangle corner o� ¼” outside of the seam. Repeat for the second bottom corner. Turn the tote right side out.

10. Measure 1½” from the tip of the triangle and mark. Place the 45˚ line of the ruler on the edge of the triangle and draw a line across the triangle through the mark.

1. With right sides together, pin (2) Fabric 2 18½” x 19½” tote lining rectangles on the two sides and the bottom.

2. Start at the top and sew down one side, across the bottom and up the opposite side. Press the seams open.

3. Turn the top edge of the lining ¾” to the inside and press well.

1. FABRIC HANDLES: Fold a 4” x 20” fabric handle, wrong sides together, in half lengthwise and press.

2. Open the pressed handle and fold each of the long edges into the pressed crease and press the new outside edges.

3. Refold to the center crease and press the handle well. Top stitch ⅛” away from each long edge to make a 1” x 20” tote handle. Make 2.

4. To box the bottom corners of the lining, bring the side seam to the bottom seam, matching the open seams and forming a triangle with the corner of the tote. Pin the triangle.

6. Sew across the triangle on the drawn line. Trim the triangle corner o� ¼” outside of the seam. Repeat for the second bottom corner. Leave the lining wrong side out.

5. Measure 1½” from the tip of the triangle and mark. Place the 45˚ line of the ruler on the edge of the triangle and draw a line across the triangle through the mark.

4. Measure 5” in from each side of the front lining and mark. Repeat on the back lining.

5. Align the raw edges of either a fabric handle or a precut web strap handle with the bottom edge of the ¾” hem on the lining. Pin the end of the handle to the inside of the 5” mark. Pin the other end of the handle on the inside of the second 5” mark. Repeat to add the second handle to the back lining.

6. Sew the ends of the handles to the folded hem in a square with a center “X” as shown to secure the handles.

1. Place the lining (wrong side out) inside the outside tote (right side out), matching the top edges of the totes and the side seams. Pin in place.

2. Sew around the top ¼” from the edge. Sew again around the top ⅛” from the edge to join the tote and lining and �nish the tote.
