Record Rewards As 2016 draws to a close, we congratulate our community who, besides achieving their best ever
examination results at GCSE and in the Sixth Form this year, have also set a new record for Vivo
reward points won and charity funds raised.
Total Vivo Points = 414,888 Total Amount Raised for Charity = £11,370.81
Points earned and money raised rising to record levels is no coincidence as Vivo rewards are
converted to charitable donations through our House system. This term, Somerville House has
raced into the lead with Nuffield, Darwin and Cavendish in hot pursuit. With Zaim (Year 7), Nabrissa (Year 8), Leo
(Year 9), Hazel (Year 10) and Chloe (Year 11) currently at the top of their year groups for Vivos awarded, the race has
only just begun. Bring on 2017. We wish everyone a very happy new year and a relaxing holiday break.

A New Reporting Team by the BBC News School Report Team
Each year the academy participates in the BBC News School Report project, with
eager student reporters from Years 7 to 9 taking the role of a news team. Through the
school year they work together to produce short reports on topics of their choosing.
Last year, students from Year 7 worked hard as apprentices, learning the ropes from
the older year groups. Now in Year 8, these students are hitting the ground running
with their own report, which will be shown to Year 7 to recruit new student reporters.
On Friday 9th December we were privileged to be able to explore the Zoological Society of London
(ZSL), as part of our BBC News School Report on endangered species. Recently the WWF and ZSL’s
annual study indicated we’re on track for a two-thirds reduction in wildlife populations from 1970 to 2020.
We were escorted around the park by their press officer, and interviewed the co-author of the study, Robin
Freeman, to find out how we can prevent this tragedy.
Last year we were learning how to be productive members of a news team, but getting to lead our own
report has been incredible, but also much more challenging. We look forward to another year of reporting
on exciting new topics and expanding our skills. You’ll be able to see our first finished news report of
the year online very soon. by Justus and Nabrissa (Year 8)

Operation Christmas Child by Keira and Sophie (Year 7)
In the run up to Christmas, Years 7 and 8 were given the
opportunity to take part in The Samaritan’s Operation
Christmas Child with Miss Sorrell. Students chose
between gifting a boy or girl of three different age ranges.
The event aims to give children around the world, who
may usually not get anything, a gift during the festive
period. We worked to fill a decorated shoe box with toys, sweets, school supplies and
hygiene items such as soaps and toothbrushes — some students even wrote letters
and Christmas cards. In total we made eleven boxes filled to the brim with gifts ready
to be sent off via a local donation point. We really enjoyed doing something nice for
someone less fortunate and hopefully we can do it again next year.

Creative Cakes by Miss Milton (Teacher of Humanities)
Once again our Year 8 students opted to undertake a creative
Geography homework, with many of them again choosing to
present their work through the medium of cake. Students created
and decorated their cakes to show the importance of our global
forests and why we should protect these areas of natural beauty.
Each one allowed students to show their imagination and
interpretation of why forests are important all over the world.
