The seminar, which was chaired by Robin Luxmoore,
Chairman o EEMUAs User Inspectorate Committee,
was in our sessions each with two presentations. All
the presenters were experts in the eld o process
integrity and several o them had been involved in
preparing the guidance document.
The keynote presentation was given by Stuart
Pointer o the HSE and he summarised the latestresults o the Executives work on Ageing Plant. The
HSE is examining companies handling hazardous
materials and assessing their perormance against a
series o parameters. To date only 30% are meeting
all the mechanical criteria and the HSE believe
documents such as the new guidance, as well
as events like the current seminar, could improve
this situation. Richard Hulmes o SAFed then
talked generally about mechanical integrity and its
importance in maintaining saety within the process
industry.
The second session was opened by Miles Gardner
o Zurich Engineering, who described briefy what
the new guidance document contained and how
it had been prepared. Stean Kukula o EEMUA
explained that although this had been described
as new guidance, it was not really new because it
recommends inspection practices that have been
used widely in the past.
The lunch break was ollowed by two presentations
on non-destructive examination techniques.Robert Smith, member o the British Institute o
Non-Destructive Testing described some recent
developments in this eld while Alan Parker and
Jason Taylor, rom Oceaneering, explained how their
company was using the most recent techniques in
inspection.
The nal session consisted o two presentations
describing case studies where real experience
in inspection -or the lack o it - could be used
to illustrate the principles in the guidance. Mike
Webb o LMP Technical Services discussed the
application o the guidance to real situations while
the HSEs Paul Stanworth described how the ailure
o inspection led to the collapse o an atmospheric
storage tank.
This seminar was supported by the two
organisations who have published the guidance-
EEMUA and SAFed - as well as the Institution o Civil
Engineers, the Institution o Chemical Engineers, the
Pipeline Industries Guild, the Energy Institute, the
Hazards Forum and the UK Forum or Engineering
Structural Integrity.
On 20T June 2013 Te Oil, Gas And Chemical Committee
O Te Process Division O Te Institution O Mechanical
Engineers Held A Seminar At Birdcage Walk As Part TeirInitiative On Ageing Plant.
Te seminar - called Te Mechanical Integrity o Process
Equipment: New Guidance on Inspection and esting
was based around a new guidance document, which has
recently been published by the Saety Assessment Federation
(SAFed) and the Engineering Equipment and MaterialsUsers Association (EEMUA). Known as SAFed IMG01
and EEMUA231, the document is endorsed by the Health
and Saety Executive (HSE), is reely available and provides
guidance on inspection as part o managing the integrity o
process equipment that contains hazardous materials.
The Institution intends to run more seminars
in 2014 continuing with the theme o Ageing
Plant. Re: www.imeche.org/events/S1737
Because this is seen as a key area in
ensuring that uture plant operations
continue to be sae, the seminars will be
supported by the HSE. Questions:

The Kalrez 0090 range provides
outstanding resistance to rapid
gas decompression (RGD),
combined with a broad chemicalresistance or use within harsh
industrial environments. This
latest certication complements
the existing NORSOK M-710
certication or these products,
which specically covers downhole applications applicable to the oil and gas
industries. These combined certications now oer considerable assurances to
manuacturing suppliers o pipeline equipment to the chemical and processing
industries as well as shore based and oshore exploration organisations.
In third party tests to stringent globally recognised standards, Kalrez 0090O-ring seals gained the best possible rating (0000) when subject to repeated
rapid gas decompression conditions. This rating demonstrates compliance with
the specications o no cracks or blisters visible on the O-rings cross section
ater the test. These results demonstrate the capability o DuPont Kalrez
0090 perfuoroelastomer parts to provide a perormance meeting both the
TOTAL and NORSOK industry standards.
In addition to providing outstanding RGD resistance, these products have other
properties that ensure superior perormance in even the harshest environments.
This includes the chemical resistance o critical seal parts to withstand attack
rom more than 1800 chemical substances, coupled with high modulus at lowelongation providing excellent extrusion resistance.
The Kalrez 0090 product range also oers broad temperature compatibility
while retaining high levels o resilience up to temperatures o 250C (482F).
DuPont static low temperature test establishes that the sealing properties
can be maintained down to -21C (-5.8F). While under pressurised sealing
conditions, the products demonstrate a low temperature perormance down to
-40C (-40F) in laboratory tests.

Cameras have reduced rom shoulder mounted
monstrosities to almost pocket size over the last
20 years, and they are usable or anyone who can
operate a digital camera and that means everyone.
That is not to say that there is a signicant body o
knowledge in thermography, and advantage in using
skilled and trained operators, but signicant VALUE
can be achieved in the maintenance eld with very
limited skill and experience. Let us propose an
unskilled operator could achieve an 80% result with
little training or looking at it another way detect
correctly 8 out o 10 potential aults, while an
experienced thermographer may achieve 99%.
Until now there have been no Intrinsically Sae
Thermal Imaging cameras available so or
hazardous areas, the analysis could only be done
with hot work permits and when no hazard is
present. Imagine the benet o doing regular
inspections o critical components, regardless o the
atmosphere.
Thermal images present inormation on the condition
o electrical and mechanical components in the
most intuitive way possible or humans. The sayingA picture is worth a thousand words applies
especially to thermal images and their interpretation.
Given a thermal image o a conveyor with 100 rollers
visible, any ault is immediately obvious through the
dierence in colour [temperature] o the bearing
housing. The same applies to electrical cabinets and
switch gear, bus bars and cables.
The First Fully Radiometric Intrinsically Sae
Thermal Imaging Camera
Previously there wasnt a ully radiometric intrinsically
sae thermal camera available on the market, but
that has now changed due to the recently released
TC7000 with the ollowing Gas, Dust & Mining
certication:
Exib IIC T4 Gb Tamb-10+40C (Vapour)
Exib IIC T4 Gb Tamb-10+40C (Dust)
Exib I Mb (Mining)
A ew technical specications show that the TC7000
is comparable to the current cameras used in
general industry. The detector is 320x240 un-cooled
microbolometer with NETD 50mK and range -20
to 600C. The display is 80mm with backlight and
a minimum ocus o 100mm will give very high
resolution in close-up.
In cases where electrical cabinets cannot be
opened, CorDEX also has a range o IR windows
to allow continuous access to survey critical
components. These windows have built in RFID tags
to automatically identiy the location to the RFID
reader in each camera.
Increase Plant Availability with Intrinsically
Sae Thermal Imaging
The CorDEX TC7000 is the same as any modern
thermal imaging camera and behaves much the
same as a normal Digital Camera. It stores images
and attaches voice annotations AND links RFID
tags to the image les which can subsequentlyin a
sae areabe downloaded to a PC or archiving or
more detailed analysis.
The RFID eature is a labour saving benet when
the maintenance plan requires a xed audit routecovering critical elements o important plant or
inrastructure. This can be a way to assure all points
are covered, and a consistent history obtained.
Analysis is improved by making valid comparisons
o these points over time. When you move to more
advanced skill sets you will be able to determine the
potential reduction in service lie, or service criticality
indicated by a given temperature. O course
temperatures are also related to loadingwhether o
mechanical or electrical componentsrecording o
load conditions validates comparisons.
CorDEX Instruments Ltd. has a long history o
manuacturing certied, high quality, handheld
digital cameras or hazardous areas. The TC7000
Intrinsically Sae Thermal Imager represents the
culmination o extensive research and development
resulting in the ultimate thermal imaging tool or
hazardous area proessionals.
Termal Imaging or Predictive Maintenance and FaultFinding In Zone 1 Hazardous Areas
For general industry, the last ten years has seen a revolution in thepower o thermal imaging cameras and a dramatic decline in the costo thermal imaging cameras.

Producing highly innovative materials handling
products or numerous applications within the
chemical, petrochemical, paints, inks, oshore
and pharmaceutical industries among others, STS
is enjoying ongoing growth despite the prevailing
economic mood, even taking on new sta at a time
when many others are shedding theirs. We put this
down to the continuing development o specialist
drum handling systems. Every time we come acrossa new drum handling problem we design a product
to solve that problem. This new unit is then put into
our standard range, says technical sales director
Colin Jones.
In addition to serving the needs o UK customers,
STS regularly elds orders rom across the globe.
Thus the company, which has just been awarded
a contract to supply a lot o drum handling
equipment or a new paints actories in Poland and
Argentina, requently sees its products destined
or use in such diverse countries as the US, Israel,
Australia and Kazakhstan to name but a ew, with
Jones commenting that it has been interesting
to see a lot o operators who used our equipment
in the North Sea oil industry now asking or our
equipment to be supplied to the Caspian.
BUILT TO LAST
The company rst hit the headlines in 1999 with the
launch o the DTC01 Universal Drum Trolley, which
allows an operator to move a 300 kg lled drum
with a orce o less than 20 kg. We won quite a ew
awards or the DTC01 Drum Trolley, including the
British Saety Industry Federation award or avoiding
back injury and the BBC Tomorrows World Inventors
o the Year award. This was some time ago but
the product has continued to sell well. The main
advantage o our trolley is it allows a drum to be
picked up with very little operator eort. It also picks
the drum up vertically and does not tilt the drum
towards the operator. This makes it excellent or
handling hazardous materials. The trolley is built o
stainless and lasts a long time. We have been sellingthe trolley or over 10 years and have never known
one that has been scrapped, he says. Indeed,
STS recently supplied new wheels or one o these
trolleys that is still going strong despite eight years
o continuous use on an oshore oil platorm. The
standard trolleys they used to buy lasted six months
in the salt spray environment, he notes.
But the companys product range by no
means ends with award-winning drum trolleys,
encompassing instead pretty much everything
rom drum dispensing cradles and depalletisers to
drum tumblers and even specialised systems or
the nuclear industry that can handle lled drums
weighing up to 2,000 kg. Continually expanding
its oering, STS has recently developed an IBC
tilting unit that provides an easy and sae way or
operators to ensure that they can remove all the
contents.
Meanwhile, the company is also gearing up to
launch a ully powered air-operated Ex stacker. This
will have power lit and power drive. It is designed
to work in conned areas where it would be dicult
and dangerous to other personnel working in the
area. For instance, i an operator wants to pick up
a 1,000 kg pallet o vessel and needs to move it
across the foor it will require a push-pull orce to
get the unit moving o 60 kg. This is dicult to do
and does not comply with the Manual Handling
Regulations. Our power drive unit can move
this with no eort. The unit is compliant with the
ATEX Regulations and only requires the minimum
o maintenance. There is no truck currently on
the market that can do this and the price is very
attractive compared to a Zoned electric version, he
says.
BESPOKE DESIGNS
With the company driven by problem solving,
some 44 per cent o its sales come rom bespoke
designs. When customers contact us or a solution
that we do not have a unit [or], we ask or as much
inormation as possible so we can ully understand
the requirements. We then start working on a
design. This culminates in us providing the customer
with some 3D solid model drawings o the proposed
unit and a detailed specication and xed price,
Jones explains. In the UK we have been oering
customers our bespoke units on a sale or return
basis. Over the past three years we have had a 98
per cent sales success ater a seven-day trial period.
The 2 per cent o specials we did not sell were all to
companies who we had not visited or the process
was changed. We are still very pleased with the 98
per cent success rate.
Our equipment, he says, is the most versatile on
the market. For instance our DRU01 Drum Rotator
will pick up and tip any size o drum rom 50 litres to
205 litres, steel or plastics. Our competitors still think
that all drums are 200 litre size.
Problem SolvedOnce youve lled a drum or intermediate bulk container (IBC),
how are you going to move it? Cornwall, UK-based BespokeHandling Equipment (SS) has the answer.

It could all be so simple in compressed air ltration:
The comparison o lter perormance data is today
possible with standard ISO 12500 and registering
operating hours is as easy as reading the dierential
pressure indicator. However, the energy conditions
o air ltration still receive very little attention in
practice (Fig 1).
The reasons are as varied as the complexity o
compressed air conditioning: The compressed air
lters are a part o the system and use only indirect
energy based on the dierential pressure, which
is applied by the compressor. The dimensioningo a compressed air system, and thereore the
capacity and number o lters used, is based on the
required compressed air quantity and quality, the
location o the compressed air purication system
and the type and age o the compressors used.
The contamination o the ambient intake air and
the humidity, which varies depending on weather
conditions, must also be considered, just as the
impurities that are introduced by the compression
process.
Especially in existing compressed air systems,
it is recommended to call in ltration experts to
measure the contamination that may be causedby the compressors (Fig 2). The contamination
by the lubricating oil alone amount up to 40
mg/m3 depending on the type o oil-lubricated
compressors; this may increase to more than
100 mg/m3 in older compressors. Even in oil-ree
compressors, abrasion, moisture and contamination
by water injection and contamination through the
lubricants o the gears and bearings can add to this
depending on the model.
In older compressed air systems with compressed
air pipework that can be several kilometres long
and disregarding leaks, can also be susceptible
to corrosion, the use o modern energy-ecient
compressed air systems requently alls ar short
o expectations. The pressure losses through
leakages are high and the compressed air pressure
in the piping system is contaminated. When the
compressed air lters at the points o use are heavily
contaminated, the dierential pressure rises aster.
This problem signicantly claries the complex
interactions o the components in compressed air
supply systems.
Experienced engineers know that the condition
o a compressed air system can be seen on the
lters. They are the best indicators o compressed
air quality without considering complex equipment.
However, these monitoring unctions can only bemet by coalescence lters with a dierential pressure
indicator (Fig 3).
The potential savings are at several
thousands o Euros
The Fraunhoer Institute or Systems Technology and
Innovation Research (ISI) discovered the ollowing in
a study in the course o the German Compressed
Air Campaign Drucklut ezient in 2003: In the
eld o compressed air treatment, it is primarily
important to achieve the compressed air quality
required or the application. It is best or energy
and operating costs to meet the requirements othe applications. Exceeding or alling below the air-
quality requirements results in increased operating
and energy costs. The current potential savings per
component part are thereby up to several thousand
Euros (Fig 4). Regularly changing the lter elements
within the recommended intervals achieve signicant
savings and thereby minimize the operating costs.
This statement has not lost any o its topicality
against the backdrop o rising electricity prices. This
means or the practice o compressed air ltration:
Compressed air lter elements must be replaced to
improve the energy balance:
Compressed Air Filter Replacement:
More Saety and EfciencyTe right timing is what matters

i they are not validated according to ISO
12500 and an objective perormance
comparison is impossible or
when the dierential pressure o coalescence
lters or the separation o aerosols and liquid
oil/water contents exceeds the limit or
i they have been used or more than twelve
months or 8,000 operating hours.
The specication o value 350 mbar within the
scope o the above-mentioned campaign Drucklut
ezient is a reerence value, and refects the
dierential pressure curve o compressed air lters.
The dierential pressure o a new lter element
initially increases very slowly. With increasing
operating time, the dierential pressure rises
more rapidly and then reaches the point at which
the lter element replacement is necessary. The
recommendations or dierential pressure limits vary
depending on the lter manuacturer and may well
be at 500 mbar.
The Best Filter or each Use
Why is it necessary to monitor each compressed
air lter in a compressed air supply system?
Contamination o the compressed air can occur
at any point o the compressed air purication
system. That is why it is so important that the lters
have reliable dierential pressure gauges. The
Economizers, which indicate when the dierential
pressure reaches the limit value and an element
replacement is advisable or reasons o operational
saety and energy eciency, so that the operatingcosts caused by the lter do not exceed its cost, are
easy (Fig 5).
Is the dierential pressure alone
important?
Although long-term experience shows that an
element replacement in the coalescence lters is
useul when the dierential pressure limit is reached,
it is not the sole decision criterion. A sudden steep
increase in dierential pressure, or example, is
a warning sign or increased contamination by
particles. Thereore, one cannot solely rely on the
dierential pressure. Even quality lter elements with
their great contamination retention capacity and
the high resistance o their lter media against the
constant exposure to corrosive substances should
be replaced at the latest ater 8,000 operating hours
or twelve months.
Basically, this replacement interval based on
operating hours applies also to activated carbonlters that are used to separate oil vapours and
odours. These lters are a standard or operations
in sensitive areas such as in the ood and
pharmaceutical industries and in the generation o
process air, in order to achieve a residual oil content
o air pressure o 0.01 mg/m3, as reerred to in ISO
Standard 8573-1 or compressed air quality class 1.
Even the use o particularly high quality activated
carbon adsorbents that are used as a bed or
as an integrated component o lter media, lose
eect, despite their high adsorption capacity, which
is not refected in the dierential pressure. The
recommendation or the lter element replacement
is at a maximum o 2,000 operating hours or three
months. Depending on the prevailing oil vapour
content and at inlet temperatures above 20 C, a
replacement is recommended at an earlier time.
Above: Figure 3Above: Figure 6
Below: Figure 5
Below: Figure 4
This is how damages can beprevented
In compliance with the replacement intervals and
dierential pressure limits, the user can be sure that
the productivity and eciency o his systems, which
rely on compressed air, are maintained or increased
and the optimum protection o the workers is
ensured.
A worst case scenario with a production loss
or unusable products can result in unpredictable
consequences or the company. Good advice and
a reliable service, the monitoring o unctions in
the central control systems and ultimately a clearresponsibility or the compressed air supply and
the timely replacement o lter elements prevent
economic damages.
Filter element replacement made

Replacing a lter element is easier today than
ever. In a cross reerence table (http://b2b.emea.

hazardous areas. For applications in Zone 2 or 22,
eld mounting models with Ex nA and Ex tc approval
permit installation without the need or Zener barriers
or galvanic isolators signicantly reducing installation
cost in these lower risk zones.
Their impressive range o hoists, covering lit capacities
rom 250kg up to a ull 100 tonnes, are used worldwide
within many heavy-industry applications including
shipbuilding and oshore, covering newbuild, rets and
repair as well as dismantling. Typical shipyard external
applications include the installation and disassembly o
rudder blades, shats and propellers, while internal work
includes heavy components or the engine room drive
equipment as well as drive shats and other general
tting out or installation work.
Compared with electrically operated hoists, the JDN air
powered equipment oers a wider range o operations
that can be saely undertaken in outdoor damp, dirty
or even hazardous area locations as well as indoor
operation in dusty or potentially explosive atmospheres.
Typical perormance advantages include easy installation
with robust, low-maintenance compact designs
combining reduced weights and easy handling with
100% duty rating toughness. Operating air pressures
range rom 4 to 6 bar with lube-ree perormance
ensuring non-pollution o the environment as exhaust
air is oil-ree. A range o optional pendant controllers
are available to provide sensitive, innitely variable
speed controls or the sae and precise positioning o
suspended loads. General insensitivity to dust, humidity
and temperatures ranging rom -20C to +70C helps to
ensure an unlimited duty-cycle perormance capacity.
The Pro Ti represents the major range o hoists in the
JDN range. This covers a total o 19 products covering
load capacities rom 250kg up to an impressive 100
tonnes per unit. These hoists all incorporate a top
suspension hook mounting so that multiple hoists
can be utilised or single load handling, where oblique
hoisting typically required or ship rudder or propeller
mount/dismount operations can be accommodated
(compliance with special saety precautions will also
apply). These rugged products can also be used
or horizontal pulling. Where horizontal movements
o suspended loads up to 20 tonnes need to be
accommodated, then the Pro Ti hoists can be mounted
on trolley units or operation on overhead support rails
even incorporating curves.

Depending on the depth o the water, the conditions
on the seabed and other prevailing actors, a range
o mobile oshore drilling units such as jackups,
semi-submersibles and drillships are used.
When an oshore services supplier recently required
new weighing systems on-board a service ship
tasked with transporting rock cuttings and otherby-products rom exploration rigs, they contacted
Applied Weighing, the UKs leading manuacturer o
weighing systems, or a solution.
The weighing systems were required to monitor the
contents o eleven on-board storage tanks used
to hold the by-products othe drilling operation.
Without the systems, the service supplier aced
the associated risks and ineciencies o over-lling
and under-lling the tanks. Hours rom shore, the
support vessels seek to maximise the productivity o
each trip.
The operating environment was such that the
systems needed to be ATEX approved and robust
enough to withstand transportation between the rigs
and shore based processing plants. Consequently,Applied Weighing chose to supply their range o
ATEX certied Saemount Loading Assemblies or
the eleven tanks.
ATEX approved weight indicators were also provided
to allow visual weight monitoring or the operators.
Critically, the solution included outputs on each
system which were used to signal to the central
control system and to stop the storage tanks rom

Barnstaple, UK, June 26, 2013 --- Advanced fuid
connection and control components or process
instrumentation and hydraulic systems that
greatly reduce the risk o system ailure, leaks and
downtime will be highlighted at Oshore Europe
2013 by the instrumentation products division o
Parker Hannin - the global leader in motion and
control technologies.
Among the major potential problem sources that
Parkers instrumentation technology combats
are the reliability risks posed by corrosion, the
large numbers o potential leak paths that are
inherent with traditional small-bore system building
techniques, and the risks posed by welding or hot
work. At this years exhibition, Parker will additionally
demonstrate the broadest choice o valve, maniold
and tube tting components available in the world
today, ollowing more than a decade o intense
development and corporate acquisitions.
The exceptional choice that Parker oers means
that instrumentation and piping engineers speciying
and building small-bore tubing systems can source
everything they need or projects rom a single
supplier, backed by the assurances that Parkers
high quality manuacturing and comprehensive
materials traceability programs deliver. Parkers core
values o aster, smarter, cleaner, saer capture
the companys goal o leadership in the process
instrumentation market.
In terms o product choice, Parkers range is
unparalleled. In the tube ttings segment or
instance, choices include advanced two errule
connectors, cone-and-thread connectors or
medium and high pressure applications, and errule-
less connectors or permanent connections. In the
valve and maniold area, options include small bore
valves that meet the medium pressure requirements
that oil and gas operators are now demanding,
ultra low emission valves, and an exceptional
selection o high-reliability and close-coupled
maniolds or installing instruments and interacing
instruments to pipelines. These product choices are
complemented by Parkers renowned supply chain
and machining capability or special purpose alloys,
such as the 6Mo material which has emerged as
the preerred choice or many oshore engineering
design consultants designing or corrosion
resistance and longevity.
A key ocus o our engineering eort is enhancing
the long term reliability o small-bore fuid
instrumentation systems, says Charles Harris
o Parker Hannins instrumentation products
division. With the aid o the new generations o
instrumentation connectors and valves we have
developed, engineering rms and operators now
have a truly comprehensive selection o advanced
system building solutions, to achieve the highest
attainable levels o reliability and saety on oshore
projects.
An important aspect o Parkers display this year is
the companys widening range o tting and valve
products that eliminate leak-prone taper threaded
connections, and with it any need or PTFE tape or
anaerobic sealant - a common cause o problems in
the eld. Parkers products in this area include valves
and maniolds with integral compression tubing
ends, and threadless piping interaces that convert a
standard fange to a compression tubing connection.
A key advance in this area being highlighted or
the construction o tomorrows oshore platorms
and process equipment is Parkers threadlessfuid connection solution that meets the need or
operating pressures in excess o the typical 6000
PSI maximum o the industry-standard two-errule
connectors. Parkers novel Phastite connector will
withstand working pressures up to 20,000 PSI
and oers a high-integrity alternative to permanent
connections made using welded connections -
which might require a hot work permit because
o the re risks and are typically not allowed on
operational platorms.
