NIMBY? By Rabbi Susan Grossman

January and February contain two secular commemorations, Martin Luther King Day and Presidents Day. Both days

honor champions for freedom and the respect due every individual regardless of class, race, faith, gender or ethnicity. These great men learned these values from Hebrew Scripture, our Scripture. Long before the Declaration of Independence, Scripture taught that all people are endowed by their Creator with the inalienable right to dignity, having been created in God’s image. Spreading this value has been part of our God appointed task as a People as a light unto the nations (Isaiah 42:6; 49:6).

Values mean little until reflected in action. As Jews in America, we are living in more

difficult times than many of us have seen during our lifetimes. Just the other day, a high school student showed me some memes (images) circulating among students of various Howard County High Schools sporting images of Hitler with anti-Semitic messages. Another student’s car was defaced with swastikas in the school parking lot. A middle school student was cursed for being a Jew. I share these disturbing anecdotes to make a point: that whenever hate speech or bullying targets one race, ethnicity, faith, or gender, hate speech, bullying and violence against other groups will follow. No minority is immune.

That is only one reason why we need to stand together with our neighbors to say,

“Not in Our Back Yards!” This phrase has a sorted, exclusionary history. But perhaps it is time to retool the phrase to inspire us to stand up against the intolerance rising in our own community not just against Jewish students but against anyone targeted by hate. That is why I hope you will join us for our annual Interfaith Service Friday Feb. 3, marking the beginning of Black History Month and honoring the special relationship between Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and Rev Martin Luther King. If you sing, consider joining our Interfaith Choir which will include joint rehearsals so people can begin to make acquaintances in our different communities. (See details on page 5).

There are many other things we can do. 1) If you see or hear something, say something. Report it to a parent, teacher, school administrator, the police, the Rabbi, AND the Howard County Human Rights Commission. It doesn’t matter if no physical harm is done. We need to report every incident so accurate statistics about all types of hate crimes can be compiled. 2) Get involved in our efforts to build interfaith and intercultural understanding in our schools and community, with our service, our efforts with the schools, or our trialogues, etc. Just let me and/or our Social Action Chair Roger Gabin know how you would like to get involved (email [email protected]). 3) Build allies by speaking with your children, their teachers, your neighbors and co-workers about the importance of NIMBY when it comes to standing up against hate and intolerance. [cont. from page 2] Share what our Jewish tradition teaches about showing everyone the dignity due every person as a child of God.

This year, we lit Hanukkah’s last candle on New Year’s Eve in the dark of winter. We Jews know how to shed light in darkness. May we help each other fulfill our calling to serve as sources of light in our community and the world.

Kosher USA: How Coke Became Kosher and Other

Tales of Modern Food, 2016 Tuesday, January 10 at 7:45 p.m.

Learn the truth behind the kosher

food labels and certification groups! The author, a professor and historian, will provide answers to many questions such as: Why do

non-Jews represent one of the fastest-growing sectors in the kosher market? What are the

most controversial kosher ingredients? How does modern food processing present

obstacles to the kosher food industry?

As congregations across North America celebrate Shabbat Across America, Beth Shalom will take the evening beyond our borders to out-

er space as Beth Shalom is transformed into a glowing universe. Join us for dinner and fasci-nating programs for all ages. 5:45 p.m.: Dinner (RSVP required) 6:45 p.m.: Tot Shabbat (Shorashim) 7:00 p.m.: Youth & Adult Programming: For Youth: Junior Congregation Service For Adults: There are many rhythms to the natural world, from sunrise to high tide to seasons to ice ages. Ever wonder why there's such regularity? It's because Time is literally woven into the fabric of the universe. Astrophysicist Dr. Bonnie Meinke explains

how astrophysicists think about time both in their observations of the universe and in their daily lives. Dr. Meinke is an Outreach Astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore that is responsible for the Hubble Space Telescope. At 8:00 p.m. during Sabbath Services: Rabbi Grossman speaks on “Shabbat Across the Universe”: What happens when time is not as we know it? Join Rabbi Grossman for an exploration of how Jewish astronauts have celebrated their Judaism in space and how we can apply what we know of astrophysics to our Jewish traditions of making time holy on earth and in the heavens. “The Mystery of Nations”

Tevet/Shevat/Adar 5777 - January/February 2017 Page 6

The Adult Ed committee has been working hard to bring interesting programs to Beth Shalom for the next several months. You should be receiving your Adult Ed brochure for Winter/Spring any day now. We’ll be having an Author series and the kickoff will be on Tuesday evening, January 10. Roger Horowitz from the University of Delaware, Kosher USA: How Coke Became Kosher and Other Tales of Modern Food. He covers more material in this well researched book than any other book on this subject. Three other authors will be here in March and May: Avraham Azrieli, Jeff Gorsky and Maggie Anton. Please see the brochure for more details. Their books are available from the public library as well as from Amazon.com. There was such great feedback from Rabbi Scheinerman’s class last winter that she has agreed to teach it again – with all new material. Halakhah in Hell: Responsa from the Holocaust will be held on Tuesdays, beginning January 17, at 7:45 p.m. The first Friday night in February brings us our 20th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel Interfaith Service at 8:00 p.m. (Feb. 3). For those who have never attended this, this is very different from our regular Shabbat service. Our guests from Celebration Church along with prayers and songs related to the MLK holiday, add much spirit and inspiration to our service.

Rabbi Grossman will be holding her regular “Ask the Rabbi” session on February 24 during Friday night services. If you’re looking for something a little less traditional on Shabbat, try our Chanting and Meditation services on January 14 or February 11. These services offer a very peaceful way of praying while helping you connect to your deeper spiritual self. No experience necessary. I want to thank the entire Adult Ed committee for helping me plan for the myriad of events that run from September through May. Without them, we would not have all these great programs. Of course, we can always use more help! If anyone wants to join our committee, please contact me to attend one of our meetings. One last thing - please support our programs by attending them! The speakers and teachers donate their time and share their knowledge without asking for anything in return. Some of them come from a long distance. A great way to show our appreciation for them is to have an enthusiastic audience and to come prepared with questions and comments for the speaker.

Education by Dr. Louis Nagel Contact Dr. Nagel at [email protected] or call (410) 531-5115 x322

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel is one of the great philosopher geniuses of the 20th century. His life story carries him from birth into a Hasidic family in Poland, to study in Berlin, to a fortunate

grant of refugee status in the United States and escaping Nazi Germany, a faculty position at JTS and a profound ethical, spiritual presence in the decades after the war. He was a personal friend of Martin Luther King, Jr. and protested with him in the Selma Civil Rights March. In this month that we honor Dr. King’s birth with a national holiday, we also observe the yartzeit of Rabbi Heschel.

In Heschel’s 1951 book, The Sabbath, he wrote, “The Sabbath is the presence of God in the world, open to the soul of man. God is not in things of space, but in moments of time.” One of our goals in the religious school is to inspire a connection to the joys of Shabbat. We have endeavored to energize participation in Junior Congregation. Since the beginning of the year, we have presented Junior Congregation as intended for all K-7th grade students with a focus at each service on particular grades. This is to take advantage of Shabbat services as an opportunity to build community around shared experience. These services serve multiple purposes. Participating in this special minyan reinforces the material learned in the classroom putting it into a meaningful, experiential context connected to sacred time.

Junior Congregation meets on the 2nd and 4th Shabbatot of the month when there is school on the subsequent Sunday. Our next services (10:30-11:40 am) will be on January 28th when we will feature our 5th/6th graders,

February 11th (4th/3rd graders) and February 25th (K-2nd graders). Of course everyone of any age or grade is always welcome to join us.

Inauguration Day Teach-In on Jewish Ethics, Values and Leadership

with Dr. Louis Nagel Friday, January 20, 2017 (7:15-7:55 pm)

In recognition of Inauguration Day, congregants, teens and their parents are invited to a Teach-In on what Jewish tradition has to tell us about the responsibilities of those assuming positions of leadership. Dr. Nagel will present texts and facilitate discussion. Teens are invited to participate in this program and to take assignments for participation in leading the Erev Shabbat service.

ט''ּו ִּבְׁשָבטTu B’Shevat Seder

Saturday, February 11 12:15 p.m.

Children and families are invited to join us for a special Tu B’Shevat Seder. This

celebration of the New Year of the Trees will follow a custom that originated with the Kabbalists of Tzfat in the 16th century with a variety of fruits, four cups of the fruit of the

vine, brachot and special readings.

Our modern understanding of this holiday makes it a Jewish version of Earth Day that

preceded our current environmental consciousness by more than two millennia.

There will be a charge of $3/child, $5/adult. RSVP by Sunday, February 5th to

[email protected].

Sisterhood News by Irva Nachlas-Gabin - Sisterhood Co-President

Happy 2017 to all Sisterhood members, past and present. This is the year that the Beth Sha-lom Sisterhood turns 45 – a milestone and a happy landmark. For 45 years, Sisterhood has been showing its support for Conservative Jewish women and for Beth Shalom. And through these four and more decades, our programs and services have expanded. Here’s a sample of what we’ve done in the past year! • Sent We-Care packages to congregation col-lege students.

• Sponsored all the Festival kiddushes and the First-Born Siyuum.

• Donated to the Cold Weather Shelter, Elizabeth House, and the Food Bank. • Co-sponsored programs with Adult Ed. • Provided prayer books to the third graders in the Religious School.

• Passed out hamentaschen on Purim and apples and candy on Simchat Torah.

Of course, when I say Sisterhood does this, I mean WOMEN in the Sisterhood do this. It is through our wonderful volunteers that we find our strengths.

But Sisterhood isn’t all volunteering. It’s also a great social group. Here are our upcoming events, and we invite you all to participate. • Sunday, January 8, 2017 – 9:30 am.: Z’Havah meet & greet. For younger women, from their 20’s to their 40’s – to reimagine their own Sisterhood. We’ll meet at Linda Eisenberg’s house at 9:30 am to sip and chat.

• Saturday, January 21 – 7:00 pm.: Chick Flick and Chocolate at the home of Eve Klein. Join us for a food-oriented movie, and chocolate goodies. Cultures clash and flavors meet as two chefs from different continents learn that it only takes about a hundred steps to meet in the middle.

• Sunday, February 5 - noon to 4 pm: Hamentaschen Baking

• Sunday, February 19 – 9 am to ??: More Hamentashen Baking (no Religious School that day) (snow date – February 26)

Let’s bake together – (200 dozen hamentaschen) - for the congregation, the School, for services, for Harmony Hall, and more. Come for part or all of the time. Bring bnai mitzvah aged and up kids to help bake. • Saturday, March 3 – 7:00 pm. Shalach Manot assembly.

• Sunday, March 4 – all day - Shalach Manot delivery.

Looking ahead to spring, Hold the Dates for these Sisterhood events: Monday, April 3, The Joint Sisterhood Dinner. Members of 6 area Sisterhoods gather for a delectable dinner and an entertaining performance by Dan Schoener, Mentalist Extraordinaire.

Saturday, April 22, Women’s League/Sisterhood Shabbat. Women lead! Join in our special Saturday morning service, in Hebrew or in English. The “sign-up genius” page will be up soon. Sunday, May 7 – 2:00 pm: Jewelry making with Ivy. Details TBA Sisterhood members are so accomplished! Eve cooks, Ivy makes jewelry. Do you have a talent or a passion to share? Let us know.
