  • THE CACAO TREE You might hear many different words describing chocolate. The Latin name for cacao is Theobroma, which means 'food of the gods.' Anyone who has tasted cocoa knows why this name is so appropriate. Cocoa is the processed product derived from the beans of the cacao plant. The word "chocolate" is from the Aztec word, "xocolatl," which means "bitter water." The cacao tree is an evergreen that grows to about 15 to 25 feet. The fruits and flowers of the cacao tree grow directly from its trunk. The tree grows an oblong fruit commonly called a pod, which can be four to 12 inches long. When the pod is young it is green in color, and can turn yellow, red or purple when ripe. Each pod contains 20 to 60 reddish-brown cocoa beans up to an inch long, which are usually arranged in five rows surrounded by a sugary pulp. Pods are usually harvested at the end of the wet, or rainy, season. It takes seven to 14 pods to produce one pound of dry cocoa bean. You can find the cacao tree in the amazon rainforest.

  • THE HELICONIA There are about 40 different species of heliconia. The leaves of this plant are paddle-shaped, and they are related to the banana family. Heliconias are sometimes called "lobster claws" or "parrot flowers" because of their beak-like "bracts" which can be orange, purple, red, yellow, pink, green or a combination of these. A bract is a leaf structure at the base of a flower. The heliconia's flowers are tiny and found inside these bracts, which are so large and colorful that they almost hide the flowers altogether. This keeps the flower's sweet nectar tucked away so that only specialized birds can get to it. Some species of heliconia have upright facing flowers, and in some called hanging heliconia, the flowers dangle down from the main stem

  • THE CAPYBARA The capybara is a rodent which looks like a huge guinea pig all mixed up with a hippopotamus. In fact the capybara is the largest rodent on earth. It has tough skin with a layer of thin red or brown hair. The capybara has longer back legs than front legs. Adult capybaras are 20-24 inches tall and 42-53 inches in body length. A male capybara can weigh from 77 to 140 pounds and a female capybara can weigh from 80 to 145 pounds. The capybara's eyes and nostrils are on top of its head, it has small ears, a deep face and a snout. The capybara has webbed feet, which help him swim in search for his meal. The capybara is found in various places of South America and Central America. These places include the Amazon rainforest, Panama, the Andes Mountains, Colombia, Uruguay, Peru and Argentina. It's habitat covers from the Amazon Basin to the Andes Mountains. The capybara may inhabit jungles or grass steppes but the capybara always lives close to a river, marsh, swamp and lake. The places the capybara inhabits are safe places where the capybaras can mate, have babies and raise them safely. The capybara is a fantastic animal that can live from 8-18 years in the wild but in captivity it lives up to 12 years of life.

  • THE OKAPI The okapi is a beautiful and unusual animal. With its white-and-black striped hindquarters and front legs, it looks like it must be related to zebras! But take a look at an okapis head and youll notice a resemblance to giraffes. The okapi is indeed the only living relative of the giraffe. Like giraffes, okapis have very large, upright ears, which catch even slight sounds, helping them to avoid trouble. They also have long, dark prehensile tongues, just like a giraffes, to help them strip the buds and young leaves from the understory brush of their rainforest home. Okapis are hard to find in the wild. Their natural habitat is the Amazon rainforest. Okapis are very wary, and their highly developed hearing alerts them to run when they hear humans in the distance. The secretive nature of okapis and the difficulty most humans have of traveling in their habitat have made okapis hard to observe in the wild. Therefore, researchers can only estimate how many okapis live there. It is believed that there are currently about 25,000 okapis in the wild.

  • THE PINK DOLPHIN The Pink Dolphin lives in the Amazon Rainforest. It is usually found in the tributaries and main rivers of the Orinoco River systems in South America. This animal can stay above water up to fifteen minutes in the rivers. Males sleep just below the surface and they come up to breathe as the reflex. The Pink Dolphin's body has adapted to the rivers of the Amazon. The Pink Dolphin looks almost like the grey dolphin, but they have differences. It measures 2.5 to 3 meters long. Although males are generally larger. The color of its body is pale pink. Instead of having a dorsal fin like the grey dolphin, it has a hump on its back. The Pink Dolphin's tale is bigger and it has 2 flippers that look like big leaves. The Pink Dolphin's neck is kind of long and his head has a little hump in the forehead. His beak is long and has tiny hairs on top. This animal has tiny eyes. The Pink Dolphin can turn its head 180 degrees, all the way around since it has an unfused vertebrae. It weighs approximately 90 kilograms. The Pink Dolphin got its amazing pink color from the kind of water it lives in, and the kind of food it eats. The Pink Dolphin does not have many adaptations. During the years it developed a long beak to get it's prey. Its small eyes are also an adaptation; it helps the animal see better in the water. Their flexible bodies help them swim faster and get more food. These dolphins can swim at a speed of up to 20 miles per hour. Some of the Pink Dolphin's adaptations can help him protect it self The Pink Dolphin does not have many enemies, so it has few ways to protect it self. One of the ways it protects it self is by staying with its pod or group. Another ways would be making squeaking sounds to call its pod. If a Pink Dolphin is alone, it will use it's long beak to protect it self. This animal also uses his flippers for protection and also for mating. The Pink Dolphin is a very nice and friendly animal. The only enemy it has is humans. Although the Pink Dolphin has 40% more brain capacity than humans do, but it still gets killed and hurt by humans.
