In the early par t of November a fellow member of the Houston Geological Society initiated a private survey of the consultant and independent members of our Society. By stating that the resul ts of the survey would be made "available to the Houston Geological Bulletin" i t left the impression that the survey had the knowledge and approval of the Executive Committee of our Society.
For the benefit of al l concerned it should be clearly stated that your Executive Committee had no pr ior knowledge of the survey, that it does not have the official sanction of the Executive Committee and that no agreement has been made t o publish the resul ts in the Bulletin.

Research and Study Committee Report
The Researchand Study Committee of the Houston Geological Society remains active. The publication "Deltas in their Geologic Environment" i s just about sold out. The continuation of our work studying deltas i s a publication provisionally entitled "Deltas of the World" and subtitled "A Compilation of Data" to be edited by Martha Lou Broussard and Martin M. Cassidy. Several new members have joined the Research and Study Committee and more a r e needed. We a r e now entering into worldwide correspondence with persons who a r e active in research on recent deltas.
Dr. Daniel Horowitz i s assuming the chairmanship of the Researchand Study Committee from Martin M. Cassidy. Dr . Horowitz was a contributor to our successful f i rs t Delta volume and i s currently employed a s a research geologist by Esso Production Research Company. He has been an active member of the Committee since coming to Houston and will be a capable and dedicated chair- man. It i s hoped that even more people will join this research effort, those wishing to do s o may find more i n f o r m a t i o n by calling Dr . Horowitz at NA 2-4222 o r contacting him by letter a t E s s o Production Researchcorporation, P. 0. Box 2189, Houston, Texas. The Research and Study Committee has a $700 budget this year and with our favorable experience in turning out our last publication we fully expect t o successfully finish this companion volume by the end of 1968. This i s an interesting and satisfying endeavor which i s of benefit t o the whole geological profession and a lso to the individuals involved. Our m'p' meeting will be 7:30 P.M. Library Committee
The Texas Well Logs (Dril lers Logs) collection, which dates from 1920, was purchased and donated to the Houston Public Library in 1966. The H.G.S. provided funds in 1967 for the microfilming of these files.
The dr i l lers logs a r e available for your use in the l ibrary. These files a r e the only readily available source of data on wells drilled before the development of the electric log.
Recent gifts t o the l ibrary have been received from the collections of the late Mr . George Buchanan and Mr. Anthony Tamborello. Mr . Edgar W. Kimball has donated a complete se t of A. A. P.G. Bulletins. Mobil has provided a box of miscellaneous books, bulletins from the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Com- mission (1942-1956), and A. P. I. Proceedings from the production section (1926- 59).
We welcome all gifts which will aid us in providing a complete public geologic library. Duplicate publications will be used a s trade material . Money contri- butions through the l ibrary committee will be used to purchase current books that the present l ibrary budget cannot supply. The l ist of needed, pertinent, publications i s long. Your contribution (tax deductible) will be appreciated and acknowledged.

San Antonio, Texas, October 26 - - Increasing maturity of the petroleum in- dustry i s reflected in independent producer andmajor oil company managements disagreeing l e s s on basic issues, the president of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists noted here today.
J. Ben Carsey, Houston consultant heading AAPG, world's largest geologica: society, said that past disagreements, often confusing the public, have hurt the whole industry more than they have helped any segment of it.
Mr. Carsey addressed the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies, a section of the AAPG.
"There i s now more mutual concern over working together to strengthen the whole industry, and in keeping our r e se rves and production up for the benefit of the F r e e World, " said Mr . Carsey. "In unity between major and independent managements, and in joint concern for solving industry problems involving such things a s exploration and the public interest, our industry will be stronger and better for al l concerned. "
He called upon the entire industry to unite in a "massive campaign to talk directly with people about the importance of the depletion tax provision to them. "

IN MEMORIAM
George Sawtelle (1892- 1967)
The sudden demise of George Sawtelle on September 3, 1967 leaves a great feeling of loss among those who knew him.
He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on February 27, 1892, where his father was a pioneer drilling contractor. As a young boy he was indoctrinated early in hard labor attached t o the drilling and dcveloprnent of wells of that e ra , carrying water and food to his father 's drilling c rews and a t a la ter age, after school and during summer vacations, working a s a tool d r e s s e r . Due to his physical fitness he became an outstanding football player a t a n ear ly age. Being ambitious and desiring a college education he received a Scholarship to L e h i g h University where he graduated in 1916 witha B. S. Degree in Chemistry. During his stay a t Lehigh he played end on theva r s i ty football team and was named All American in his senior year.
After finishing college he joined the United States Calvary where he served on the Mexican Border and attained the rank of Captain. While attending a Specialty School at For t Riley, Kansas, he met the charming and gracious Mary Seymour Sawtelle and mar r i ed her in 1917. During the f i rs t World War his Regiment was re-organized a s the 79th Field Arti l lery which joined the Seventh Division in France where he spent two years .
. His des i re t o enter the Exploration Branch of the Oil Business led him to en- roll a t Northwestern University where he studied Geology for two years while working a s Assistant Football Coach.
In 1922 he joined the staff of Kirby Petroleum Company, doing surface and subsurface geological work in the Mexia Trend Area of Eas t Texas . He became President of Kirby in 1934 and Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1957. He continued t o serve in th is capacity until 1964, a t which t ime he r e t i r ed from active employment, but remained a Director until his death.
Mr . Sawtelle was quite active in the affairs of the Geological profession, having been a founder of the HoustonGeological Society of which he was President from 1929-30. He served a s president of Texas Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association and during World War I1 served a s Distr ict Director of Facility Security Division, Petroleum Administration for War. He was a lso Vice-president of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists from 1934-35, and served a s Director of the Independent Petroleum Association of America. He was a founder of the Library Books Fund, a member of the Newcomer Society, Delta Upsilon Fraternity, Dallas and Houston Petroleum Clubs, Ramada Club, Houston Country Club and Mill Reef Club in Antigua, B. W. I. In 1936 he was co-editor of the symposium "Gulf Coast Oil Fields". In 1956 he received an honorary Doctors Degree from Marietta College and was recipient of the highest award in the Lehigh Alumni Association.
Believing that people in business should contribute to the welfare of their community and industry, he found t ime to devote to this endeavor. He headed
the United Fund Drive in 1943 and se rved a s President of the Houston Chamber of Commerce . While acting in various capacit ies with the Houston Chamber of Commerce he felt, along with others, that our underground water supply should be conserved fo r human use and industrial water should besuppliedfrom other sources . He did much work toward this end.
Mr . Sawtelle i s survived by a son, G. Flint Sawtelle of Austin, Texas and a daughter, M r s . E. B. Berry of Houston.
He will long be remembered in the hear ts of h is friends and co-workers in the oil industry.

Among those traveling to the Orient th is fall were: Tommy and Lynn Thomas. John and Virginia Vetter and Bob and Lillian Moehlman. T h e twenty-four day t r ip was sponsored by the Geo Club and included stops in Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong and Thailand. The Thomases then continued on t o Singapore and Bob Moehlman extended h i s t r i p to include Australia. A grand t ime was had by all and Tommy Thomas i s t o be congratulated for being such a n efficient tour d i rec tor .
Another interest ing t r ip this fall was taken by Helen and David Hedley when they went ona two week "safari" through the Big Bend National Park . They con- cluded the i r t r i p a t the i r summer home in Ruidoso, New Mexico, where they spent ten days.
Imagine the su rp r i se of the Sidney Schafers while at the i r farm in Arkansas one day in ea r ly fall, t o awaken and find the ent i re countryside covered with a blanket of snow and the water pipes frozen. T h i s was most unusual for that par - t icu lar t ime of year , but i t must have made a beautiful picture.
Getting things off to a grand s t a r t a t the G. C. A. G. S. Convention cocktail party were: F reda and Karl Schneidau, Linda and Raymond Fairchild, a n d Marge and B. Phillips.
Faye and Ray Lewis were the re f rom Schulenburg and among those tripping
the light fantastic (would you believe, Schulenburg Stomp?) with them a t the dance were: the Eddie Heiders, the Jim Werners, the Charles Trowbridges and the Louis Newitts.
Others seen attending the various functions a t the recent meeting in San Antonio were: Jackie and Mac Newby, Martha and Floyd Wilcox, Barbara and James Barker, Nelda and Jimmy Sims, Barbara and Neil Hanson, Ernestine and Otto Pixler, Robbie and Paul Carlton, Dora and John Campbell, Betty and Jim Goodwyn, Betsy and Gordon Hinz and Martha and Ed Tyson.
Former Houstonians who attended were the Ray Burkes &om California and Velma and Bob Ross from Jackson, Mississippi, thus affording their Houston friends a n i c e visit and a chance to catch upon all the latest family n e w s .
Journeying in another direction, Pat and Howard Les te r visited their son a t Tulane and attended the many homecoming activities in New Orleans.
Meanwhile, back inHouston the social season continuedand the Bill Paynes and the Sam Webbs were among the geologists and their ladies who attended a dance held a t the Geo Club on November 11.
Houston delegates and wives who attended the S. E .G. Convention held in Oklahoma City, October 29 to November 2, got a preview of things to come when the A. A. P. G. Convention takes place there in April. ~ r s , Noyes D. Smith, J r . (Ruth) repor ts that a full program of well-planned entertainment made the meetingmost enjoyable. She though the style show-luncheon was p re - sented in a particularly interesting and different way by showing how some designs in present day fashions were originated by the Indians (Mini-ha-ha to
- Mini-skirts!)
Elizabeth and Steve Kovacs, formerly of Houston, were houseguests of the Bob Moehlmans during the Thanksgiving holidays and saw a lot of friends while here . They now live in Bartlesville .
"Over the r iver and through the woods t o Grandmother's house" they did go when Gwinn Lewis took husband Jim and children to he r mother 's farm near Brenham for Thanksgiving.
The Geo-Wives-Newcomers Club December meeting at the Geo Club will feature Christmas music by The Singing Sextette and with that thought in mind I would like to say-
