We congratulate Bulelwa Mbeleki who became a granny last week. Support Thank you to everyone who supported our Foundation Phase galas. Although the visit to our school on Saturday by the American tourists was cancelled because the East London port was closed, we do appreciate those parents who were prepared to transport their children to and from school. We are going to be receiving a monetary donation from the tourists and this money will be allocated to the various departments involved in the visit on 10 February that did go ahead as planned. Grade R 2017 This is a final reminder to those Hudson Park Primary families who have children born in 2011 and who would like these siblings to attend our school. Please, ensure that your completed application form is in by the first round closing date of 10 March 2016. Remember that a sibling must have the same biological father and/or mother and be living in the same house as the HPPS brother/sister. The family must also not be in arrears with school fees as Grade R is not included in the small government allocation to schools. Student Council The Student Council consists of Grade 7 children who, through serving the school in one or more of our service areas, display leadership qualities that have been recognized by the staff in those areas as well as our Grade 6 staff and the School Management Team. They are tasked with roles and duties over and above those of their service areas. The first group of councilors nominated and approved for the 2016 Student Council are Kirsti-Ann Burmeister, Rachel Forsyth, Yonwaba Gongqa, Jared Hansen, Grace Isibor, Jenna Ketteringham, Wama Polo, Pippa Sparg, Sanchia Poovan, Olivia Schaefer, Matthew van Harmelen, Layla van Zyl, Alexia Velde and Jenna Willows. We shall continue observing our Grade 7's to see if there are others who serve and who display leadership qualities. Unmarked uniform items Julie Holmes reports that she has a large number of unmarked uniform items in our school shop. It is easy to get marked items back to the owners when they are handed in. Please help us to get your child's lost clothing back to them by ensuring that all belongings are clearly marked with your child's name. Parenting The 7 Commandments of Parenting comes from an article by John Dorschner. 1. Be a parent, not a pal. Being a parent means setting limits and making rules. 2. Discipline early. Consistent authority is required. Explaining is good, negotiating is not. NO means NO. 3. Spend time with your children. Quality time is good, but it can't replace availability. 4. Control the electronics. Limit computer games and television time and only allow games and programmes which you have monitored. 5. Know what your child is up to. If you can't be there for them in the afternoons, string together after-school programmes and a network of family, friends and neighbours. 6. Don't get carried away with self-esteem. Real self- esteem comes from achieving something challenging. If you protect too much, they will never develop the ability to overcome problems. 7. Stay married. The most important thing two parents can do to ensure their children grow up well-adjusted, is to stay together.

The Internet Remembers EVERYTHING!

In my regular digital safety presentations to learners in primary and high schools, one of the facts that shocks kids most is that the internet remembers everything – even what they have deleted. It is a sobering realisation for many, to think before they post in future. So how does the internet remember? In just the same way as we do (or should do) regular backups of the content on our computers, search engines do exactly the same thing and they keep multiple versions over time. It's called a cache. The only way to have something permanently removed from a cache is through a legal process. With regard to a social media platform such as Facebook, you may have removed something from your timeline but it can still come up in a search on Facebook because you don't know how many people might have it on their own timelines. In the same way, you can remove a tag on a picture someone else has posted of you but you cannot personally remove the picture. You would have to ask them to physically remove it but it would still be saved in the Facebook cache. There are also time machine websites that have been tracking the development and history of the internet since the 70s and they cache/backup every version of every website ever created and published on the web.The internet remembers everything. I hope this is a good enough reason to have a conversation with your children about the importance of being a responsible user of social media and technology. Their digital reputation depends on it. And, because 9 February is Safer Internet Day, do make February the month to discuss all things related to your child's digital safety.

ACTIVITY LISTAges 0 – 10Ÿ Parents, please activate your privacy settings on your social media profiles. We all love to post gorgeous pictures of our babies,

toddlers and young children (and there might even be some naked ones too), but you must remember to choose who can view the pictures. If you post it to public and you have no privacy settings on, then this means anyone in the world can view these photographs. And there are paedophiles and predators just waiting for some cute pics of your tots to pore over and maybe even sell on to others. You can create categories such as family, friends, colleagues etc. Use them and protect your children.

Ages 10 – 18Ÿ At this point, many of your children will have their own devices and be on social media. You need to be sensitive about the kinds of

pictures you post of them. Ask their permission before posting pics as you should get them to ask permission before posting pics of you.

Ÿ Once again, privacy settings apply to both parents and tweens and teens. Have the discussion and take positive steps to taking greater care of what gets posted and who can see it.

Ÿ Create a poster to put on the back of the bathroom door and the back of the front door that says: Think before you post! We need to keep reminding our children of how to take positive action online.

Ÿ Be aware that everything that you and your children post on social networks is owned by the networks the minute you have clicked 'post' (check terms and conditions– most of us don't, so take my word for it!).

Ÿ Reputation management is an important conversation to have with your children – recruiters will check if the online-life of a candidate for a tertiary education institution or a job is congruent with their off-line life and the image they portray during their interviews and on their CV's.

Hudson Park Primary makes use of the popular d6 School Communicator System to communicate important day-to-day information to parents. Letters/notices will be uploaded to the d6 to cut down on our use of paper and in turn cut down on our negative impact on the environment. With escalating paper costs, it is imperative for our school to look at cost saving initiatives which will allow for funds to be redirected into other areas.

Parents, please take a moment to download the d6 Communicator. It is available for free for desktop PC's, Android phones and tablets, iPhones and iPads. There is also a mobile website.

Click on the following link and choose the system you would prefer: http://www.school-communicator.com/download.php

Parent Interviews Some Grade 1 teachers have started their parent interviews, and the others will be starting shortly. Please fill in your name on the roster on the classroom door, or write in your child's message book to schedule a suitable time.

The Grade 2 teachers have also started their parent interviews. Please either write your name down on the roster on the classroom door or communicate with your child’s teacher via the homework diary with regard to a suitable interview time.

The Grade 3 teachers will be conducting parent interviews from Wednesday 2 March until the end of term. Please check the roster outside the classrooms to secure an appointment time.

From the Pastoral Department...CHOC VISIT On Saturday, 13 February, Outreach and Hudson Port Rex Lions Cub members visited the Frere hospital CHOC ward. The CHOC children were presented with sweets, fruit, fluffy toys, games and art activities. The highlight of the morning was the making of love crowns and the children enjoyed wearing and showing off their creative masterpieces.

VALENTINES DAY CHOC ASSEMBLYOur CHOC Valentines day assembly was a colourful affair with much singing, rapping, dancing, acting and sharing. We also spent some time decorating the trees outside the hall in red, pink and white fabric and special hearts to show the CHOC children that we really do care! We were able to raise R5812 for CHOC.

BREAD TAG HAND OVERHudson Port Rex Lions CUBS, on behalf of Hudson Park Primary, handed over 95 kg and 200 g bread tags to the East London Ladies Circle 23. Altogether we need to collect 270 kg for a wheelchair to be donated so please keep collecting. Bread tags may be sent to Mr Lands in the Drama Room.

ONGOING COLLECTIONS: Please continue to collect plastic bread tags, 2nd hand cat/dog collars and any reading books. These items may be sent to the Drama room where they shall be handed over to needy organisations.

VISITS BY AMERICAN TOURISTSOn Wednesday, 10 February, American tourists from the cruise ship, MS Silver

Cloud were entertained at Hudson Park by the music, drama, sport and English

departments. The tourists enjoyed their "taste of Africa" through song, drama
