Call for Proposals About the Symposium The inaugural Hip-Hop Music Ed Symposium will be a two-day conference and workshop on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. The event will bring together educators, musicians, and scholars to explore and experience Hip-Hop musicianship. As the symposium runs concurrently with the final two days of the Illinois Summer Youth Music Hip-Hop Camp for middle and high school students, attendees will work alongside youth campers and experienced Hip-Hop and R&B musicians to create, record, and perform original music. The symposium will feature a keynote address from Dr. Will Patterson; a guest presentation and performance from the Hip-Hop duo, Mother Nature; and sessions proposed by attendees. Session Proposals Educators, musicians, and scholars are invited to submit proposals for a variety of potential symposium sessions related to Hip-Hop and music education. These may include but are not limited to: original research; sharing teaching practices; models of school and community programs; philosophical, theoretical, political, and social issues; or hands-on workshops. Sessions will be 25-minutes long. Depending on interest, a poster/roundtable session may also be included during the evening of July 19 th . Abstracts of 250 words maximum describing the proposed session and a presenter bio of 100 words maximum should be submitted via the symposium website at http://go.illinois.edu/hiphopmusiced. A panel of educators, musicians, and scholars will blindly review all submissions. Submissions must be received by April 1, 2018. Notification of acceptance will be sent by April 15, 2018.
