PROFITABLE INDUSTRIES FOR YOUFORMALDEHYDE RESIN (UREA,

PHENOL, MELAMINE & THEIRMODIFIED RESINS) [EIRI-1491]

Approximately 1 million metric tons of urea-formaldehyde resin are produced annually.More than 70% of this urea-formaldehyde resinis used by the forest products industry for avariety of purposes. The resin is used in theproduction of an adhesive for bondingparticleboard (61% of the urea-formaldehydeused by the industry), medium densityfiberboard (27%), hardwood plywood (5%), anda laminating adhesive for bonding (7%), forexample, furniture case goods, overlays topanels, and interior flush doors. Urea-formaldehyde resins are the most prominentexamples of the class of thermosetting resinsusually referred to as amino resins.2,3 Urea-formaldehyde resins comprise about 80% of theamino resins produced worldwide. Melamine-formaldehyde resins constitute the remainderof this class of resins, except for minor amountsof resins that are produced from otheraldehydes or amino compounds (especiallyaniline), or both.

CATHETERS MANUFACTURING[EIRI-1490]

A catheter is a flexible tube made of latex, silicone, or Teflon that can be inserted into thebody creating a channel for the passage of fluidor the entry of a medical device. For many years, the epidermal catheters used were plain tubesmade of available industrial compounds, anddesign was largely based on current need.Nowadays, there are many specialized catheterdesigns. For example, specific catheter designsallow catheters to be used in pulmonary, cardiac(vascular), neonatal, central nervous system, and epidural tissues. Catheters are designedto perform tissue ablation (tissue removal) andeven serve as conduits for thermal, optics, andvarious medical devices. The three major typesof catheters are coronary, renal, and infusion.Coronary catheters are used for angiography(x-ray of blood vessels after injection ofradiopaque substance), angioplasty &ultrasound procedures in the heart or inperipheral veins and arteries. These cathetersare equipped with an inflatable balloon at thetip and are used for urine incontinence, dyingpatients, and bladder drainage following surgeryor an incapacitating injury or illness.

CONFECTIONERY UNIT(TOFFEE, CANDY/LOLLIPOP,

CHEWING GUM, BUBBLE GUM& CHOCOLATE) [EIRI-1488]

Confectionery or sweetmeats are preservededible delicacies consisting of a solid orcrystalline phase and a liquid or non-crystallinephase the relative propor tion of whichdetermine the type of confectionery. Theprincipal types of confectionery are hand boiledgoods, caramel and toffee, comfits or draggees, and lozenges. Sugar is the principal ingredientof confectionery. There are about 50 importantconfectionery factories in the country. Mainly inU.P. Bihar, Mumbai, Punjab, and Bengal. Inaddition, a large number of small concerns areproducing sugar confectionery with indigenousequipments. The covering of chocolates wasoriginally carried out solely by hand the processbeing known as ‘hand dipping’. Each piece or‘centre’ was handled individually, dropped intomolten chocolate (temperature 88- 92 deg.F),covered, and finally placed a plaque to set. Theprocess gave results which even today aresuperior to any mechanical methods.

PLASTIC WATER STORAGETANKS [EIRI-1487]

The term Plastics usually refers to a large andvaried group of synthetic materials which aresolid in finished form but at some stage in theirprocessing are fluid enough to be shaped byapplication of heat and pressure. The use ofplastics in building has grown rapidly in the lastfew years. Plastics were first used for decorativeand non structural purposes but because ofincreased knowledge of the long termproperties of plastics particularly resistance tocreep and environmental effects some plasticsare now available that maintain long termstructural integrity, such as piping, doors andwindows, water tanks that can contain moderatepressures for a long period of time. During thelast decade Plastic (conversion) Industry hasprogressed at a fast rate. New fields ofapplication of plastics are continually beingdeveloped. Tile sometime ago drums, barrelswere conventionally manufactured out of M.S.Sheets. Today we can get the drum and barrelmade out of Plastics. Blow moulding has beenthe most widely used method of themanufacture of hollow-ware out ofthermoplastics.

COW DAIRY FARMING(AYRSHIRE/HOLSTEIN) AND

MILK PROCESSING [EIRI-1486]Dairy industry is of crucial importance to India. The country is the world’s largest milk producer, accounting for more than 13% of world total milkproduction. It is the world largest consumer ofdairy products, consuming almost 100% of itsown milk production. Dairy products are a majorsource of cheap and nutritious food to millionsof people in India and the only acceptablesource of animal protein for large vegetariansegment of Indian population, particularlyamong the landless, small and marginal farmersand women. India’s high-value, high-volumemarket for traditional dairy products anddelicacies is all set to boom further under thetechnology of mass production. More and moredairy plants in the public, cooperative andprivate sectors in India are going in for themanufacture of traditional milk products. Thistrend will undoubtedly give a further stimulusto the milk consumption in the country andensure a better price to primary milk producers.

DETERGENT CAKEAND POWDER [EIRI-1485]

Since soaps have comparatively lesserwashing characteristics in hard water thansynthetic detergents, synthetic washingcompounds have been able to occupy asignificant market which was enjoyed bywashing soaps earlier. The term detergentoriginated from the latin word detergine (i.e.wipe off), is now-a-days applied to all syntheticwashing compounds. Synthetic detergent is not

only used as household cleaning material butalso have industrial applications in textiles, pesticide industry as carriers, etc. The termdetergent is used for synthetic detergentsderived from petroleum products. Syntheticdetergents have expanded rapidly all over theworld. Their rapid development has beenstimulated by the enormous and fast growth ofthe international petro-chemical industry. Thetransition from conventional hard soaps tosynthetic detergent cake has been rapid andirreversible response by consumers. so thatto-day, synthetic detergent accounts in mostdeveloped and under developing countries inthe world. to improve detergency of thedetergent cakes, powders, cer tain othercomponents were added to it known asbuilders, synergers, fillers and brightners etc.

GRAIN BASED ALCOHOLDISTILLERY [EIRI-1484]

Man has been making alcoholic drinks for a verylong time. Precisely how and when the pleasingeffects of alcohol were first discovery we cannotbe sure, but almost certainly the discoverycame about by happy accident; honey, fruit juicethe sap in the hollow of a tree would all if left forlong enough at the right temperature formentspontaneously and cause a feeling of well beingin whoever drank them. The term ‘alcohol’ wasfirst applied to the spirits of wine, ethyl alcohol, and now it refers to a series of substances withsimilar characteristics. Ethyl alcohol is the activeconstituent of al introcating liquore obtained bythe fermentation of saccharine materials.

Withtotal annual production of 16.91 million tonesfrom 490.70 thousand ha., with nationalaverage of 33.5 T/ha. Maharashtra ranks firstin production with 60 T/ha. Banana contributes37% to total fruit production in India. Banana isone of the major and economically importantfruit crop of Maharashtra. Banana occupy 20%area among the total area under crop in India.Maharashtra ranks second in area and first inproductivity in India. Jalgaon is a major Banana

growing district in Maharashtra which occupy50,000 hectares area under Banana. But mostof Banana is grown by planting suckers. Thetechnology development in agriculture is veryfast, it results in developing Tissue CultureTechnique. Banana is basically a tropical crop, grows well in temperature range of 13:C - 38:Cwith RH regime of 75-85%. In India this crop isbeing cultivated in climate ranging from humidtropical to dry mild subtropics through selectionof appropriate varieties like Grandnaine.Chilling injury occurs at temperatures below12:C. The normal growth of the banana beginsat 18:C, reaches optimum at 27:C, thendeclines and comes to a halt at 38:C. Highertemperature causes sun scorching.

COPPER PHTHALOCYANINECRUDE (CPC) [EIRI-1480]

Phthalocyanine pigments are derived from thePhthalocyanine structure, a tetraazatetrabenzoporphine. Although this basicmolecule can chelate with a large varity ofmetals under various co-ordination conditions, today only the copper (II) complexes are ofpractical importance as pigments. Excellentgeneral chemical and physical properties;combined with good economy, make them thelargest fraction of organic pigments in themarket today. Copper Phthalocyanine (CPC)pigments, by virtue of their exceptionally brilliantshade, high tinctorial strength, low cost andoutstanding fastness properties, have beenruling the colorant industry . They are about tocomplete 70 years of meritorious service asan unchallenged leader of various types of blueand green pigments. Most of these pigmentshad poor chemical resistance, unsatisfactoryacid/or alkali resistance, insufficient lightfastness & poor sublimation fastness.

LATEX GLOVES, CONDOMS &CATHETER [EIRI-1479]

The gloves are made from latex by dippingmethod. In the same plant of hand gloves, otherproducts like finger stalls, balloons, etc. canalso be manufactured. Deposition of rubber bydipping an article in rubber solution in order toobtain thin walled articles in and old process, toy balloons, gloves for surgical and householduse were made by dipping forms in milledrubber solution as cements. A single dip wassufficient for producing very thin articles, but incase of heavy ones the dipping and dryingoperations had to be repeated several times. The solution uses as of high viscosity, yet itcontain only a very small percentage of rubber, consequently the usage of solvent was highand the method of solvent recovery were veryinefficient. It was not surprising that when latexbecome commercially available attempts weremade to use it in place of rubber solutions.Dipped goods from latex especially surgicalgloves, industrial gloves, finger stalls etc. arefinding increasing use formerly almost thesearticles were important. However, some largescale units in the country almost monopolizedthe manufacture and the marketing of theseproducts. Recently much progress has beenmade in small sector. Especially becausetechnical know how is no longer a problem andall the raw materials are available indigenously.Dipped goods from rubber latex, speciallysurgical gloves, industrial gloves, finger stalls, cathetrar, surgical and vetinery appliances arefinding increasing use. However, some largescale units in this country almost monopolished

the manufacture and marketing of theseproducts. Recentlymust progress has beenmade insmallscale sector.

BIO-DIESEL FROM ALGAE[EIRI-1034]

High oil prices, competing demands betweenfoods and other biofuel sources, and the worldfood crisis, have ignited interest in algaculture(farming algae) for making vegetable oil, biodiesel, bioethanol, biogasoline, biomethanol, biobutanol and other biofuels, using land thatis not suitable for agriculture. Among algal fuels’attractive characteristics: they do not affect freshwater resources, can be produced using oceanand wastewater, and are biodegradable andrelatively harmless to the env Factors. Dry massfactor is the percentage of dry biomass inrelation to the fresh biomass; e.g. if the dry massfactor is 5%, one would need 20 kg. of wet algae(algae in the media) to get 1 kg. of dry algaecells. Lipid content is the percentage of oil inrelation to the dry biomass needed to get it, i.e.if the algae lipid content is 40%, one would need2.5 kg. of dry algae to get 1 kg. of oil. The vegoilalgae product can then be harvested andconverted into biodiesel or green-colored crudeoil. The algae’s carbohydrate content can befermented into bioethanol and biobutanol.

GEMS AND JEWELLERY[EIRI-1036]

Jewellery making is one of the oldest industriesin India. It has been a traditional craft in India,

each region in the country specialising indifferent designs and skills. The Indian artisansand craftsman have developed mastery overthe manufacture of solid gold ornaments, gem-encrusted jewellery, delicate ornaments withfilligree work, enamelled jewellery as well ascostume jewellery. Jewellery is one trade whichis still placed in the cottage industry category. However, the growing recognition of Indianworkmanship by foreign luyers has result inbosting the export of cut and polished gems. The Gem and Jewellery Export PromotionCouncil was set up in 1966. This was awelcome stepas gem and jewellery has beenrecognised as an export-oriented industry. Thecouncil operating under the Union CommerceMinistry as a non profit service institution, hashelped in the establishment of testinglaboratories and training school at Jaipur andthe Indian Gemmological Institute at Delhi. Thecouncil represent about 3,000 exporters ofgems and jewellery. Gold has a characteristicpleasing colour but it assumes various colours.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLESDRYING BY FREEZE DRYING

METHOD [EIRI-1039]The modern method of dehydration, i.e. dryingfruits and vegetables under controlledconditions of temperature and humidity ishowever, assuming importance as a majorindustry. The dehydration industry got animpetus during the World War II. On account oftheir concentrated form, low cost, convenienceand easy transportability, dried fruit andvegetable products and also other dehydratedfoods became highly popular among the armedforces. Dehydrated vegetables, however, lostsome of their popularity owing to someundesirable changes in colour, taste and flavourduring storage and distribution. Dehydrationtechniques have since been greatly improvedto get over most of these defects so that themodern dehydrated food is really a first classproduct in every way. It is sometimes said thatthe dehydration industry will one day be themost important one among the foodpreservation industries employing various otherwell-known methods of preservation such ascanning, freezing, addition of chemicalpreservatives etc.

STEEL ROLLING MILL (BYINDUCTION FURNACE)

[EIRI-1041]The products of steel plants are in the form ofstructural shapes such as I-sections, channels, angles, plates, rails, sheets, axles and wheelsfor railways, merchant products lime rounds, hexagons, squares, strips etc. Galvanizedsheets, tin-plates, wire-rods and soon. Rails, wheels and axles are specifically meant forrailways which are a large consumer of steel. These are specifically used directly as suppliedby steel plant. However, the remaining productsof a steel plant, by and large, are processedfurther in engineering industries before theiractual use. These products are therefore oftencalled as ‘Semis’ meaning thereby that they aresemi-finished steel products only. For producingthese semis, the liquid steel, in finished form iscast into ingots and subsequently rolled inseveral types of mills which are normally a partof the steel plant.

Othernames for PAC are basic aluminium chloride, polybasic aluminium chloride, aluminiumhydroxychlorid, aluminium oxychloride andaluminium chlorohydrate. The presence ofpolymeric, aluminium-containing cations, thedistribution of which can differ greatly, typifiesPAC products. Although the formation ofpolynuclear aluminium species in solution hasbeen studied for over a centary, there is stillmuch controversy concerning aluminiumpolymerization reactions and the resultingproduct compositions. Polyaluminium chlorideis a partially hydrolyzed aluminium chloridesolution, which may incorporate a small amountof sulphate, has been introduced in Japan,England and Australia as an alternative to alum.

RECTIFIED SPIRIT [EIRI-1237]Rectified spirit or rectified alcohol is highconcentration alcohol purified by the processof rectification (repeated or fractionaldistillation). It is used for medicinal purposes,as a household solvent, and in mixed drinks.Neutral grain spirit is a kind of rectified spirit, produced from grain. The term alcohol was firstapplied to the spirits of wine, ethyl alcohol andnow it refers to a series of substances withsimilar characteristics Ethyl alcohol is theactive constituent of all intoxicating liquarsobtained by the fermentation of saccharinematerials. It is present in the form of esters inseveral volatile oils. It is now a days preparedin immense quantities, chiefly by fermentationand finds numerous industrial uses, and is alsobeing used as a motor fuel.

BOTTLING PLANT(COUNTRY LIQUOR)

[EIRI-1233]There are nevertheless several very earlyreferences which can be taken to indicate thata potable spirit (like country liquor) was knownmany thousands of years ago. The earliestregarding excessive consumption of potabledistilled spirit, i.e. country liquor and otherproducts, appear to have come from China, some 1000 years B.C. Aristotle later mentionspurifying sea water by evaporation, and also“wine which produces a spirit”. For centuriesthe art of distilling remained firmly in the handsof alchemists. Herbs had long been thought tocure various maladies, agriurduly for Jaundice, fox glore, for blisters and it would seem that thealchemists argued that, if the juice of one ofthese herbs could be, say, quadrupled instrength, then the efficiency of cure would bemultiplied four fold. The alchemists wereresponsible for many improvements in the artof distilling.

HDPE PIPES AND PIPEFITTINGS [EIRI-1336]

Provision of drinking water supply, or in otherwords ‘piped’ water supply to urban and ruralpopulation, constitutes an important aspect ofdevelopmental programmes in many countries.Among several materials for pipes and fittings, plastics, though of recent origin, have offeredvast potentialities both economical and

technical, for exploitation by the engineers, architects and builders of the plastic materials, polyethylene (low and high density) andunplasticized PVC (rigid PVC) have been theprime contender, though to a fairly smallerextent, polypropylene and ABS have madetheir appearance in this field. A whole rangeof sanitary fittings and fixtures viz, taps, showers, gratings, basin and sink wastes, waste traps, float balls and valves, syphonsfor flushing cystems, are also currentlyavailable in the market, moulded in differentsuitable plastics.

Silica. The most common occurrence of silica(qv) is in the form of quartz. Other forms whichare found in nature are tridymite, cristobalite, vitreous silica, cryptocrystalline forms (usuallyas pebbles in chalk), hydrated silica anddiatomite. The principal sources ofsilica usedin the ceramic industry are the sandstones, quartzites, and sands. Quartzites, often calledganister, are firmly consolidated sandstones, whereas sandstones are rather lightly bondedquartz grains or sands. Silica is the primaryingredient in glass and is usually obtained fromhigh purity sandstones or quartzites bycrushing and grinding, or from high-gradesand deposits. The term glass sand may referto a deposit of sand or, more commonly it isused to refer to the sand after it has beenbeneficiated from sandstones, quartzites, ornatural sands.

PAPAIN EXTRACTIONINDUSTRY [EIRI-1418]

The papaya is the fruit of the papaya tree(Carica papaya) native of Central America.Thefruit ripens from 4 to 6 months depending onthe climate where it is grown (Salunkhe andKadam, 1995). The cultivation of this fruit hastwo main purposes: the sale of the fruit forhuman consumption and the extraction ofenzymes that constitute 40% of the latex in 1mM concentrations. The papain is a naturalproteolytic enzyme that is extracted from thelatex in the leaf, the stem and the papaya’sunripe fruits. Papain is used in a many industrialfields (like pharmaceutical, brewery, meat, dairy, textile, photographic, optical, tanning, cosmetic, detergents, food & leather industry), becausea synthetic enzyme is not capable of simulatingthe propertie of the natural enzyme, whichincreased its demand. The process to obtainraw papain consists of two main stages: latexextraction and drying. A third stage, purification, may be used if a purified papain is wanted. Thiswork compares the crude enzymatic activityobtained from locally Carica papaya using theunripe fruit and the skin juice under differentdrying processes and evaluates the enzymeactivity for the proposed purification procedure.A common enzyme known as papain isobtained from the green papaya (pawpaw) fruit.Enzymes are proteins that can increase the rateof biological changes such as the ripening offruit.

BIOFERTILIZER [EIRI-1429]The fertilizers are used to improve the fertilityof the land using biological wastes, hence theterm biofertilizers, and biological wastes do notcontain any chemicals which are detrimentalto the living soil. They are extremely beneficialin enriching the soil with those micro-organisms,which produce organic nutrients for the soil andhelp combat diseases. The farm produce doesnot contain traces of hazardous and poisonousmaterials. Thus those products are acceptedacross the world as Organic ones. Hence fororganic farming the use of biofertilizers ismandatory. In India the requirement of fertilizersis steeply increasing every year and is mainlysupplied in the form of chemical fertilizers.Chemical fertilizers mainly Urea, D.A.P. SuperPhosphate, Potash, Zinc Sulphate etc. arebeing used since long back to boost the cropproduction which has adverse effects on soilbiota thereby increasing the cost of cultivation.

GRATING) [EIRI-1443]Steel Grating manufacturing plant comprisesGate Grill Railing fabrication etc, Collapsiblegate is also very useful. Recently, this type ofgate was very common in scene but now adays is not very commonly used. Still this typeof gate can be seen mainly as a main gate.Collapsible gate has an advantage that even achild can fold or unfold it while in case of a handoperated shutter. This is not possible. Secondly,as a collapsible gate is made of flat strips, whenthe gate is opened inside scenes are visiblewhen gate is closed. A collapsible gate is verysimple in construction. It consists of flat stripsof mild steel of thickness 4 mm to 6 mm. Thesestrips are riveted together crosswords. On thetop and bottom with of the gate small wheelsare fixed and iron is used on top and bottom asguides for these wheels. Four handles twoinside and two outsides on each of the gate iswelded so as to open and close the gatewhenever desired.

MANUFACTURE OF DISTILLEDSPIRITS & ALCOHOLIC

BEVERAGES [EIRI-1440]Gin, Vodka and related spirits like aquarit aredistinguishable from whisky, rum and brandywhich themselves have a number of commoncharacteristics. The most evident difference isin colour, with gin an vodka normally beingcolourless white whisky, rum and brandy varyin shade from straw - coloured to the deepestbrown. This immediate difference is linked withdistinguishing features of composition and

flavour which are reflected in the methods ofproduction of the two troup of sprits. The aurdwhisky comes from the Gaelic word wisge -beatha, as the Irish called it, incoming the waterof life. The colour in whisky, rum and brandyoves it origin to the practice of ageing ormaturing these spirits in wooden casks, whichas containers have previously used fortransporting some compatible liquid such asslerry, wine or molasses.
