Project Goals
• Improve habitat for nearshore species
• Create vegetation buffer and connectivity of uplands to beach
and nearshore
• Restore natural beach processes by removing derelict shore
armor

• Remove failed armor: pilings, horizontal wood, boulders, concrete
bags, and other miscellaneous debris
• Potentially remove concrete pad, move and/or shorten parking area

Coastal Engineering Geology Assessment
Coastal Geologic Services provided an initial feasibility assessment of shore armor removal at Hidden
Beach on June 29, 2018. Report is available on project website.
Key findings are as follows:
• The majority of the erosion of fill placed in this reach appears to have already occurred, as most of the
old pile wall was gone and the placed boulders were scattered in such a manner that they no longer
functioned as a revetment or other coherent shore protection structure
• The Whidbey Telecom access could potentially be threatened with full armor removal. Additional
investigation of future erosion projections and ownership/easements will be required.
• Hidden Beach Road is the most landward improvement and would not appear to be threatened by
erosion, even with full removal.
• The waterward edge of the parking lot may be threatened with erosion over the medium to long term
with full armor removal. However, the parking lot is quite large in the cross-shore direction and likely
could be reduced in size without losing much function.
