    IEC

    IEC means sharing information and ideas in away that is culturally sensitive and acceptable to

    the community, using appropriate channels,

    messages and methods.

    It is therefore broader than developing health

    education materials, because it includes the

    process of communication and building socialnetworks for communicating informations.

    IEC is the process of providing information toindividuals in a community through the use of

    communication channels in such a manner that

    they are motivated to assimilate the message and

    are educated to act.

    Health education was the term used earlier.

    IEC is a process of working with individuals,communities and societies to develop

    Role of IEC

    At the individual level,IEC activities can provide people with theopportunity to develop their personal knowledge,skills and confidence and to reconsider their

    attitudes, beliefs and behavior.

    It can increase awareness, provide information,

    persuade and motivate people to changebehavior, and provide reinforcement to conformand sustain behavior change.

    At the wider community level,IEC can encourage local organizations, decision-

    maker, the media and other influencers to change

    social attitudes and norms and the wider

    environment which influences peoples behavior.

    Promotes actions which are realistic and practicaland feasible within the constraints faced by

    individuals and communities.

    Builds on ideas, concepts and practices thatpeople already possess.

    Background

    In 1991 new health policy was initiated. Followingthis policy, National Health Education, information

    and Communication Centre (NHEICC) was

    established under the Ministry of Health and

    population in 1993, with the mandate to give highpriority to information, education and

    communication in the health sector.

    This centre is responsible for developing, producing anddisseminating messages to promote and support health

    programs and services in an integrated manner. For this

    purpose, all districts have Health education, information

    and communication programs since FY 2051/52.

    The Health education and communication units in the

    district Health Offices works to meet the increasing

    demand for health education services by implementing

    IEC activities utilizing various media and methodsaccording to the needs of the local people in the district.

    Goal

    The goal of the National Health Education,information and Communication Centre is to

    contribute to attainment of the highest level of

    health of the people of the country and to

    contribute and support in the achievement ofMDGs 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7; and goal and objectives of

    other programs and services

    Objectives

    The general objective of IEC for health is to raisethe health awareness of the people as a mean to

    promote improved health status and to prevent

    disease through the efforts of the people

    The specific objectives of the programsare to: Increase awareness and knowledge of the people on health

    issues Increase positive attitudes towards health care

    Increase healthy behavior

    Increase participation of the people in the health interventionprograms at all levels of health services

    NDHS 2011 preliminary report shows decrease in TFR, IMR,CBR and MMR.

    The report also shows reduction in prevalence of anaemiaamong pregnant women and children.

    Knowledge of informants about HIV/AIDS has been foundincreased.

    Utilization rate of available health services has been increasedaccording to the report.

    There is correlation with the health indicators of NDHS 2011 andimpact of health education, information and communicationprogram.
