HIGH ATTENUATION SLEEPER SYSTEM Vibration Mitigation System for Monoblock Sleepers Thanks to its booted sleeper dimension tolerance and well-known replacement process, the HAS system can be replaced overnight. HAS is an integrated system dedicated to mitigating ground vibrations generated from rolling stock. Not only does HAS have mitigation properties similar to floating slab tracks (FSTs), it enables tracks to be laid ten times as fast. The HAS System was co-developed and co- patented by ALSTOM Transport and SATEBA, the CONSOLIS Group’s French subsidiary. SATEBA brought its expertise in designing and manufacturing concrete sleepers to the table, while Alstom Transport contributed its expertise in designing and laying railway tracks. SATEBA already successfully developed in the late 1990s the SAT S312 twin block sleeper. One evolution of this sleeper has been used for vibration mitigation in UK tunnels (e.g. the high- speed Channel Tunnel Rail Link-CTRL 2) A COST-EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO FLOATING SLAB TRACKS A Cost-efficient Solution The HAS Design THE HAS SYSTEM – THE SOLUTION FOR URBAN TRANSPORT “Before HAS there simply weren’t any sleeper-based solutions that could mitigate vibration like this.” HAS was developed as an innovative alternative to float- ing slab tracks (FSTs). As a high-performance anti-vibration track system, FSTs are mainly used in urban environments, particularly underground, where the highest level of vibration mitigation is required due to high population density and the presence of landmarks. HAS provides attenuation performance equivalent to most FSTs at a fraction of the cost. Building floating slab tracks inside a tunnel is costly and time consuming. HAS is much easier to implement and is compliant with all rapid transit requirements (design, implementation, mainte- nance specs, etc.). Though the system provides mitigation performance similar to FSTs, HAS tracks can be laid inside a tunnel ten times as fast. The time saved on both laying tracks and designing tunnel dimensions leads to significant cost savings. The HAS System consists of a heavy prestressed monoblock concrete sleeper set on two resilient pads in a rigid plastic hull. The hull is cast in the concrete slab. Lateral pads fixed inside the hull allow HAS to withstand longitudinal and trans- verse loads (static and dynamic). The concrete sleeper is mobile inside the rigid hull. To a certain extent, its weight can be adapted to fit the level of mitigation needed: the heavier the sleeper, the higher the level of mitigation. The HAS System’s Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) is 40 years. HAS System Compliances

    • The filling concrete around the sleeper doesn’t need to be reinforced.•No disruption in the construction method.•HAS can be laid in 18m-long panels using standard installation

equipment.•Thanks to the cushion mats under HAS, construction trains can run

    on the track before concreting.

HAS is designed for the following:•Light Rail train applications (axle load up to 12 tonnes)•metro applications (axle load up to 16 tonnes)•Standard tracks (axle load up to 25 tonnes)

HAS System can be laid as follows: •On open-air tracks as well as in tunnels•In straight lines or canted curves

HAS’ design is customized to vibration mitigation needs.

    • Directly applicable to ballastless tracks.•Alternative solution to floating slab tracks.•HAS is more compact than a standard floating slab track, reducing

tunnel diameter by as much as 20 to 30cm.

maintaining HAS is a quick and simple process. If need be, the sleeper can easily be removed from its rigid plastic hull and replaced by a new one. All the system’s resilient components – lateral pads, resilient pads, etc. – can be accessed without difficulty. Thanks to this smooth and fast maintenance process, track down-time can be greatly reduced.

Using feedback from the CTRL 2 project and measurements taken during train operations, a computer simulation was developed. Trials were performed using a monoblock version with inertia, leading to higher vibration mitigation (20db at 63Hz). This was HAS’s proof of concept. Thanks to this simulation, we were able to compare the vibration mitigation of different systems – including floating slab tracks – and to work out the suitable rigidity of HAS’s resilient pads.A prototype was then cast in a concrete slab and subjected to mechanical tests in SATEBA’s Chalon-sur-Saône (France) lab. Vibration mitigation measurements were recorded.

Final validation was made in live trial on a testing track of HAS at the Centre d’Essais Ferroviaire de Valenciennes in France. The track’s mechanical behaviour and its vibration mitigation were consistent with the predicted performances.

Sleepers are embedded in second-stage concrete.

More compact than a standard floating slab track, HAS allows tunnel diameter reduction by 20 to 30cm.

HAS has successfully passed lab tests.

RUBBER GASKET SEALANT Its shape and hardness allow the sleeper to move in the hull.

CONCRETE SLEEPER HAS is a massive monoblock sleeper. Its weight is one of the key factors in its good vibration mitigation performances (20Hz frequency resonance).

LATERAL PADS These are designed with grooves to reduce friction and provide good lateral track elasticity.

RESILIENT PAD made of polyurethane foam, its thickness varies according to the expected level of performance.

RIGID HULL made of ABS, it’s designed to resist shocks and loads from both track laying and everyday use. The external face has several fins to ensure the hull is firmly anchored in concrete. Its rigidity makes maintenance easier.
